My first experience with Five Guys was not necessarily something to write home, or in this case Yelp*, about. It was just after they'd opened, so to avoid lines I ordered from their website, picked the food up, and drove it home to eat. Everything was a mess. Toppings were smushed. Fries were soft. Stuff was dripping. It just wasn't good. I didn't hold that against them though as the fact that they were new, the weird ordering process, and the longish trip home probably didn't help matters any. So, I vowed, I'd give them another shot.
A lot of time passed since then, but recently I was finally able to stop in and see how things are going now that they've settled in. And what a lot a little bit of time and actually eating in the restaurant has done for Five Guys reputation in my circle! This time the burgers were hot, fresh, and flavorful. When we sat down with our food we could really taste the flavor of the beef and the quality of all the various ingredients. This wasn't the messy smash of burger-like accoutrements I'd previously pulled out of my take-out bags. This was great food!
Speaking of great and bags; my table shared one large fry which came in a big brown paper bag we ripped open and put in the middle of the table. No limp, listless potatoes were to be found this time! These fries were hot, crisp, salty, and bursting with fresh potato flavor! And it turned out we had more than enough to savor alongside multiple burgers eaten by several patrons! So much so that we actually had leftovers! Now THAT is a LARGE fry if ever I've seen one! Good thing they had Mr. Pibb in the soda fountain to wash 'em down.
Thank goodness for second chances!
