The Best Chinese Restaurants in and Around New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Five Happiness opened on Carrollton Avenue in 1979 when Chinese food options were minimal. Named for the Chinese tradition of five kinds of happiness: longevity, wealth, health, virtue, and peaceful death, Five Happiness adds a full belly to the list. The crispy whole fish with black bean sauce is a winner, ditto the duck, which comes with 10 thin crepes for bundling." - Beth D’Addono

Google
I hate to rate poorly, but this was the worst Chinese food I’ve ever had. The Chinese food in the mall is better. All of the food lacked flavor and salt. The double cooked pork was about 5 pieces of meat and the rest was vegetables. The mandarin chicken was a fried chicken cutlet with a bizarre tasting sauce on the side. I was very disappointed with this food.

Google
I ordered the General chicken and pork fried rice, and both entrees were delicious! They come pipping hot, and it literally took 8 minutes, and it was done! The chicken wasn't too breaded or too naked. Also, the grease the egg roll was fried in didn't taste old as some places do. The leftovers were just as good late at night when I had some! As of now, this is my go-to as far as chinese is concerned!

Google
I love egg foo young and have eaten it all over the US. I ordered shrimp egg foo young from this restaurant, but what I was served was far from what it is supposed to be. Instead of a fluffy omelet containing bean sprouts, onions and shrimp with a savory gravy, it was closest to a fritata with ground veggies a strange tasting sauce with shrimp poured over it. The egg patty itself was heavy and dense....hardly a fluffy omelet. DO NOT ORDER unless this sounds appealing.

Google
Five happiness is a great Chinese restaurant in New Orleans. Everything I’ve eaten there is amazing and the staff is very welcoming and kind. The prices are reasonable as well. I recommend getting the moo shu pork!

Google
Delivery was supposed to include utensils but they failed to include. So I had to eat with my hands. (They were too busy to care when I called about it). Also, as a lifelong New Yorker-- I recall a very good Five Happiness years ago in Manhattan- this New Orleans knockoff may be the worst Chinese food I've ever had. And yet expensive. No flavor, like the other recent review noted. The "vegetable soup" is just hot water with large chunks of vegetables in it. Yuck. Couldn't drink it. Tasteless fried rice. Chicken with snow peas and mushrooms was almost too bland to eat. (The sauce was mediocre.) I hope New Orleans has better Chinese food than this. Sad.

Google
Absolutely the best Chinese food i have found in New Orleans. I can't recommend Five Happiness highly enough. From dim sum appetizers to the magnificent Peking Duck, expect authentic tastes of China. The staff are so helpful and friendly. Truly a don't miss foodie spot.

Google
One of the most well-known and established Chinese restaurants in the New Orleans area. I have been here many times, and am basing my comments on all the visits. First, the food. The food is generally excellent - some dishes are more to my liking than others, but I really enjoy everything I get here. Wonderful. The service leaves a little to be desired. The staff is friendly, but every time I come here it seems I have to wait a while before I get what I need. I do eventually get their attention, but I just don’t care for the wait. Atmosphere - very nice! There is no fluorescent lighting, it’s not too bright and they play Chinese music in the background… but it is too low and you can barely hear it. Just a *little* louder tonight. Overall, I have never had a bad dining experience here. I will continue to dine here and try new items on their menu.

Google
Wish I could give it 10 stars so I ordered from a Vietnamese take spot in my area that serve me some straight slop baby I was livid ! So I’m searching around and found 5 happiness never knew they delivered so I said why not let’s see! I ordered the mandarin beef with white rice on the side! Baby the quality and presentation was beautiful and customer service on the phone was excellent! The delivery was fast! Then to top it off they put my take out order in this beautiful reusable grocery bag lol because that’s what I’m gone use it for! I’m am well over please thumbs up you definitely will be getting my coins again lol!

Yelp
Been coming here for over 30 years. It's had its ups and down, but seems to have regained its stride. The food was spotty for a year or so about 2 years ago but lately it's been very consistant. The hot and sour soup, the beef terayaki, generals chicken, chicken with hot garlic sauce, and twice cooked pork are always solid choice. The food is much better in the restaurant than with takout, FYI.

Yelp
Not satisfied at all, we purchased 3 take out dinners. When my daughter got home with our food we can smell the rice was burnt, we could not eat it. I told her to call them so they can get to the heart of the matter. Their solution was bring the rice back in, we live in Slidell. She told them she could not do that until the next day on her way to work. The manager's reply was it had to be brought in today because another manager would be there tomorrow! Our decision was and she was told that was the last time we will patronize them.

Yelp
We really like their lunch special! The soup Is good and the rice is decent. The human entrees, garlic entrees, generals chicken and sweet and sour are very good! The service is good and quick.

Yelp
Very impressive. I eat a lot of Chinese food and I have to say this place has the best Wonton soup I've ever had. The order, delivered by Uber Eats arrived 25 minutes ahead of schedule. It was a little pricey, but honestly, as good as it was, I'm not complaining. I could easily eat the Lo Mein for two meals.

Yelp
Eggplant in hot garlic sauce with or without pork is so delicious along with the bountiful shrimp fried rice. This is my go to place in Mid City!
google avatar

Holly W.

Yelp
Just really bad. Gloppy sticky brown sauce used on virtually everything. Egg rolls very greasy. Eggplant entree unattractive, looks like intestines, and has no eggplant flavor at all just the brown sauce all over it. Fried rice had no flavor. Staff friendly and service good. Cheap. But I won't be back.

Yelp
This has always been my all-time favorite Chinese restaurant. I literally ate here multiple times per week for years when in school in NO. Whenever I pass through New Orleans I eat here. I had heard it was under new management and was not as good. Unfortunately, that is the case. Egg rolls were literally cold in center, just out of the fridge. Waitress sent another. It was hot but was saturated with oil. Main course, crisp pepper steak, was not crisp and was very chewy. Waitress was nice, very apologetic, but the food was not good. Sad to see one of my favorite places go down hill.

Yelp
I have been to 5 Happiness many times now. Always for take-out. I cannot speak to their dining room experience. The food here is pretty solid. It is the best Chinese food in the area that I have found and so this is my regular go-to spot. The sauteed Eggplant is one of our regular orders and tends to be pretty good. The citrus chicken is okay. Their hot and sour soup is good. Nothing we have had is bad, but nothing will blow your socks off. Expect solid take-out chinese at slightly higher than normal prices. *they will occasionally mess up your order and put the wrong thing in the bag. I have never returned it, because I don't feel like driving back, but it is a bit annoying when it happens*

Yelp
Why did I waste time, money and calories on this restaurant? I was hungry, back in m old neighborhood and remembered it being decent . I was seated promptly, nice sever, ordered shrimp egg foo young on a cooler day. One the egg portion was about 3x3 inches, obviously cooked the day before, hard, stale. The shrimp were straight out of a bag, not even seasoned, just thrown on top, and it was the absolute worst dish. I've had in a very long time. Just skip this place. Anyone that would serve that dish has no respect for their customers. That was truly awful and really showed how much they think about people that spend money at their establishment. I spoke with the server about the quality of the dish, and she assured me that the next time I come, she'll make sure that they cook one it's fresh for me. Believe me, she doesn't need to worry about me returning.

Yelp
3 stars I heard it was good back in the day! I'm not impressed. Ate a lunch special. Maybe next time, I'll order other than the lunch special. The roast duck looks good next to our table.

Yelp
I actually paused my delivery meal from this place in order to write a review, because I'm so over the moon with it. Ever since moving to this city, I've been struggling to find Chinese cuisine that will satisfy me. I come from a much larger city that has a thriving Chinatown and amazing food on every corner. I found a few serviceable Chinese places in town, but nothing that compares with anything back home. Five Happiness is by far the closest. It will be my go-to Chinese place from now on. The vegetarian egg rolls are the best in the city for sure. Yes, they are greasy. But that's okay with me. They are not those tiny little spring rolls. They have a lot of substance to them. The restaurant sends sides (not packages) of sweet and sour and very hot mustard, which is so appreciated. Last time, I had the vegetable moo shu and the vegetable lo mein. Both were great and were served in huge portions. It fed me for 2 days. Tonight, I had the gai lan (Chinese broccoli), which blew me away. Normally Chinese broccoli is served in a light wine sauce with garlic. But this version is very spicy and hardy. I haven't found too many places that serve gai lan in New Orleans. this just made me so happy and also came in a huge portion. I also tried the vegetable fried rice which, I kid you not, came in a portion large enough to feed an entire family. It was so great and well balanced, with chunks of broccoli and baby corn and carrots. The only downside to this place for me at all is the price point. It's more expensive than the other places I order from, but I guess you get what you pay for. It would be remiss of me not to mention the adorable and reusable bag they put the food in for delivery. It's a really nice fabric bag that you can use for grocery shopping or so many other things. That tells me this business really cares. Another reason I don't mind paying a little more. I see there are a lot of bad reviews here, but I can't relate at all. I have finally found my Chinese place in New Orleans. Give them a try.

Yelp
Great food I recommend the crawfish tail sautéed. Service was excellent, the young man who served me needs a raise, absolutely incredible. Atmosphere was relaxing, felt homie and great decoration.

Yelp
I was eating this food for about 5 minutes and then I heard myself say out-loud, totally unconsciously, "this is nasty." Probably the worst, most expensive meal we've had this year- and we eat out a lot... I'm revewing this one out-of-order just to warn others who may have also relied on that one Eater list that recommended this place... don't believe it. I don't know what kind of alchemy they used to removed the taste from so many dishes. And I don't want to know, either. Just don't go here. There. You've been warned.

Yelp
Five Happiness was absolutely the best Chinese food in the NOLA area before Katrina.  I used to love how all the waiters had the exact same haircut and you got outstanding service.  After Katrina the service has never really recovered and the food is similar but just doesn't seem to hit the high marks that it used to.  It actually depresses me a bit to eat here these days as I remember how fantastic it used to be. They have improved from the very low point they had fallen too after Katrina but it still isn't up to where it was. The dinner prices are definitely way up there these days which makes Five Happiness a much better choice for their lunch specials than dinner these days. My video review of Five Happiness is here: https://youtu.be/-t-lcANcd6E

Yelp
Everything is horrible. From staff to food. If this is what new orleanians think is good chinese then they are drunk!

Yelp
This was my first time dining outside my home since over a year ago! Covid has taken it's toll for sure. The employees were all wearing masks, so you could tell the restaurant was being responsible about safety. It was a very late lunch at 3:30pm, so it wasn't very crowded and I thought the tables were sufficiently separated between diners. As for the food, we had the curry chicken and shrimp with assorted vegetables here. I wasn't smitten with the curry chicken, but I LOVED the shrimp with assorted veggies! It was light, but flavorful, and not at all greasy or feeling like junk food. It came with my choice of yummy soup, a delicious crispy egg roll, and fantastic shrimp fried rice. There was nothing wrong with the curry chicken, the ingredients were fresh and the cuts of chicken were of great quality (no fat or tendons). The seasoning just wasn't for me! This is an actual restaurant, not a cheap Chinese take-out shop, so each menu item does cost a little bit more (only about $3-4 more than the take-out shops though!) and their portions are a bit more reserved (but not really small, per se). I could eat the fried wonton strips they give you before your meal all day; that's something you don't get with take-out!

Yelp
Yes! This place is awesome. Everything we ordered was so good. When I lived in town years ago I used to come here a lot. Came back for the first time since and it was still as delicious as ever. We got all kinds of dishes--bbq ribs, crab rangoon, and pot stickers were all incredible appetizers. Mongolian beef, lemon chicken, and king pao shrimp were all legit too. Portions were generous. We'll be back soon!

Natalie C.

Yelp
Not the closest Chinese food near me, but it's totally worth the distance, very tasty!

Yelp
I have been going to Five Happiness for many years as a New Orleans native. It once was one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. We ordered it tonight and it wasn't not good AT ALL. It was actually a waste of calories and I only ate 1/3 of it and threw the rest away. There was zero flavor and never need to go back. The quality has gone extremely down and it should have been a huge sign when no one was in the restaurant. Do not waste your money or calories...
google avatar

Christopher W.

Yelp
Five Happiness for decades was a cut above your normal takeout Chinese. Now the quality has gone down to takeout window level but you are still paying the way above average price. I ordered my usual general tso dinner with broccoli which is now over $20 and it was the most bland meal I have ever had from them. The rice which used to be above most shrimp fried rice in town was no better than the usual cheap Chinese takeout.

Margaret G.

Yelp
I have been coming to Five Happiness for many many years. I'm not sure what happened...if management changed or owners or what, but they are no longer the quality establishment that I remember. I ordered a large to go order and picked it up and brought it home. One order was wrong so I went back to pick up the corrected order. Even though I called them before I went to pick it up it still took a very long time for it to come out. Before it came out I asked to please put white rice instead of shrimp rice. The older woman with shoulder length hair who was behind the counter responded in a very rude manner. I remained polite while waiting for the food and also while the to go staff chose to speak really rudely to me. Five Happiness, you should staff your restaurant with people who are ready and happy to serve your food. Not staff who cannot do business without snarling and being nasty. In addition, the interior decor is depressing and drab. Consider renovating the place. Food was okay. Not great. Good luck, Long time customer no longer.

Yelp
So we got here and were seated immediately. Our soup came quickly, followed by our order in a timely manner. However the generals chicken was so overcooked we couldn't eat it. As you can see from the photo. It has been pushed to the side of the table where no one bothered to stop and check on our order and everyone from the front desk manager to all of the wait staff chose to turn a blind eye to it for over 20 minutes until we brought their attention to it. Finally I flagged someone down who had just walked past our table. We sent it back and they still charged us $5.48 for drinks that never got a single refill. They SUCK AND WE WILL NEVER COME BACK!

Yelp
Hubby and I got a quick bite to eat . We was greeted immediately. Lady Cashier was very nice . Food was so good.

Yelp
(Writing this while I drag my chopsticks through the rice dough looking for trace amounts of meat and veggie). The food is MEH... half the staff are Chinese and I wish they'd offer an authentic menu. With "sub gum" being one of the specialties idk... they exist to make a profit. I ordered a staple Canto dish- beef chow fun. It's like jambalaya, if you can't make it, your business will be closed in no time in New Orleans. A lot of minced up rice noodle that needed more flavor... they made their margin in the cooked rice dough they sold me. Nice people and I trust I won't get a stomach virus more than the creepy-looking China Kitchen down the block, but I'll likely spend my money elsewhere...

Donyelle F.

Yelp
We had takeout for lunch at the office and regretted it. Food was not fresh and gave us food poisoning. Never again.
google avatar

Linas M.

Yelp
Best food ever !! You get a lot at a reasonable price. The service is AMAZING Good for Family , Dates , and birthdays. The vibe is laid back and casual . Don't forget to tip those wonderful servers either it's worth it

Stephen G.

Yelp
We really wanted this to be a good place for take out. We barely got 1 happiness and no happy ending. The food is extremely overpriced and the portions are small. The crab Rangoon was very good, steamed dumplings were gummy, chicken and vegetable was more like sauce and a vegetable. None of it looked very appealing when we opened the packaging. Consider this, Dragon King is one third of the price and tastes a lot better. I wish I could say something good, oh yeah, the shopping bag it came in is reusable. Sad really.
google avatar

Orphan D.

Yelp
Well we had to drop it 1 star and it's not even the restaurant's fault. We recently went back for an early dinner, (5:30). While we ate one of the city's representatives decided to break into our vehicle. Mind you we are in the restaurant parking lot. Happily informed that this is a recurring crime in the area. Needless to say we won't be going back after all these years. Can't afford to keep paying for the thefts and don't want to end up in jail if I catch them. And to add insult to injury, my camera caught it all including their license plate and the city's boys in blue haven't even called me back. So eater beware
google avatar

Yelp
A waste of my money pictures says alot it wasn't hot the chicken looked and tastes like it was reheated and I didn't enjoy

Carlene C.

Yelp
don't know what happened to the place....food was always fabulous but now its just ok. the pot stickers are so small, and have NO meat, only cabbage sad that this iconic restaurant has gone down the tubes...looking for alternative place
google avatar

Nina N.

Yelp
This was my second time coming here and my expectations were much lower. The chicken lo mein was okay, needed more flavor/sauce. If you ask for hot garlic sauce on the side and mix it in, it changes the entire dish, I recommend. The chicken in hot garlic sauce (I think that's what it's called) was great! It came with a side of rice, delicious. We also ordered the crab Rangoon and shrimp toast, not pictured. Great appetizers. Not 5 stars because the service was extremely slow. They are very understaffed right now because of Covid. Tables were still dirty as we walked in, and only 2 servers in the dining area.
google avatar

Jill M.

Yelp
We just got back from a doctor appointment and we were starving this place was right around the corner so we stopped the staff is very nice and the crab Rangoon's are soooo amazing . For my main course we had some of the best vegetables and fried rice . If you are in the area come it is so worth it!!! I could not stop eating!
google avatar

Ross R.

Yelp
Overpriced low quality food and horrible service I would not recommend this restaurant

Thomas V.

Yelp
This formally superb restaurant has become hot and cold. Some visits are just great... really great. Regretfully the next visit is just fair at best. People say that there are two different kitchen staffs, one excellent and one not too good. Hope this restaurant can get some consistency. We keep going because the good is o so good. This was the best Chinese food in town. Today it's a gamble. Please fix this Five Happiness.

Randy B.

Yelp
Always check your orders before you leave. My girlfriend an I stopped by to place an order to go and she ordered pork with Broccoli in garlic sauce for me. We live on the northshore and, lo and behold, when we get home andnunpack the bag, I've got Broccoli but no pork. And the garlic sauce wasn't all that good. Overall it was disappointing.
google avatar

George O.

Yelp
One of the best Chinese American restaurants (for a very long time) in the city w decent portions @ a reasonable price w a relatively upscale atmosphere. It can tend to get crowded during peak lunch hours.
google avatar

Linda B.

Yelp
Excellent! We drove 100 miles one way to have dinner here for our anniversary, and are now headed back 100 miles home. Yes it was worth the drive!
google avatar

Stanton V.

Yelp
Five Happiness is my regular "go to" Chinese restaurant ( on average 1x per week). I do both dine in and take out and the service is always great. This is a large restaurant so there's plenty of space for large groups, families or couples. The food is consistently good and freshly prepared regardless of dining in or taking out.

Mary M.

Yelp
This was my favorite Chinese restaurant for 20 years, however it has gone so far downhill I will not visit or order from again. Twice I have gotten sick from eating their food. It won't happen again.
google avatar

Eliza B.

Yelp
I can't believe this is only three stars! The food is awesome. I love the staff and they are open until like ten! Generals chicken, combo lo mein and mooshu pork are my faves, but I haven't had anything I didn't like. Only crab Rangoon I will eat!

Steve B.

Yelp
I've been going here for YEARS. They use to be good but not anymore. If you go to get takeout at night they will give you way less food and it'll probably be cold. I went there a couple days ago and got take out and the food was ice cold and it was a way smaller portion than normal. When I returned it I told them they could have at least gave me a free drink or something seeing as I could have went all the way home with some ice cold food and they acted like I said something crazy. I'm not coming back here anymore.

Valerie S.

Yelp
I went with friends for lunch recently. What a different quality of food from the last time I was there. Dry chicken and under seasoned fried rice, though great service, and the ambiance was the usual pleasant. There are too many good Chinese restaurants to eat bland and carelessly prepared lunch specials. The exception was an order of the twice cooked beef. It was very good, though not on the lunch menu.
google avatar

Kia J.

Yelp
Food is fresh and tasty. One of my favorite places to eat. Service is great and the ambiance is calming and peaceful.

Gayle M.

Yelp
Very good hot n sour soup and fried rice. Wait is not too long. The cashew chicken is delicious.
google avatar

Renee B.

Yelp
This is a sad day. I am truly disappointed with the way Five Happiness has fallen over the years. This Chinese restaurant used to be one of the best in the city and now it reminds me of frozen Chinese food in a box. I've noticed a gradual decline over the decades, but nothing prepared me for what I tried recently. I ordered takeout and was saddened by how ordinary the vegetable fried rice was. It used to have an abundance of Chinese vegetables and mushrooms, but the budget version I received had a couple of disappointing broccoli florets and some carrots. It was overly salty but didn't offer much flavor compared to what they made in the past. No assortment of Chinese veggies and the rice itself resembled dyed minute rice. Unfortunately, I will be traveling uptown to August Moon or all the way to Kenner to hit up Young's if I crave Chinese food in the future. RIP, Five Happiness. Your days as one of the best have come to an end.

Yelp
We have always had a really good meal there eaten there Many times the service is good and our meal were great. We will be going back for sure.

Yelp
I ordered through Uber Eats from five happiness today BIG MISTAKE, i ordered 3 items, one of them was just plain missing, not in bag, one of them had in special instructions NO ONIONS, and had 800 green onions in it, I am already paying a premium price as the prices with Uber eats are much higher than the menu restaurant prices which is fine I know and understand that, but I called the restaurant to complain and was treated so absolutely rudely and my complaints were completely dismissed, they acted like it was no big deal that two of my three items were either missing or incorrect and told me to "call Uber Eats that's who you ordered from not us" absolutely unbelievable and I will never ever eat in this restaurant again which I have many many times and obviously will never order from them again. Terrible service and management! Absolutely unbelievable how I was treated.
google avatar

Jennifer F.

Yelp
When they're good, they're really amazing! Every now and then I've gone and everything was off. They're always great on Christmas when we've gone. They have amazing crab rangoons! Service on Christmas Day was really awesome!!

Yelp
Some of the best Chinese I've found in Nola. Staff is nice and food is very good. We dine here often.
