The 15 Best Restaurants in Missoula, Home of the University of Montana | Eater

"While studying at the University of Montana, Tom Snyder wanted to offer Missoula a grab-and-go restaurant that served healthy and flavorful food. Along with his partner, Lauren, he planned to open a Brazilian restaurant, winning a statewide business-plan competition and earning the chance to travel to Brazil to experience the cuisine. Two years after graduation, they opened the first Five on Black storefront in downtown Missoula, offering traditional Brazilian dishes in build-your-own bowls. Be sure to add the spicy coconut sauce and pão de queijo (Brazilian cheese bread) to your bowl." - Lotus Porte-Moyel

Google
Prices were about average for the style of restaurant. I ordered a large and was able to save half for dinner. Quality of ingredients was good. Selection of Gluten-free options was outstanding. Everything they offer was Gluten-free The staff was pleasant. It certainly felt like a chain establishment, but everything was clean and the food was good.

Google
How is this place rated so high? I've tried it a few times over the last couple years, hoping each time that the last experience was a fluke. No such luck. Each time, it's a bland bowl of flavorless rice, with a few black beans, a COUPLE shreds of meat, and some tiny amounts of whatever "sides" and sauces they allow you to get (and I ordered everything I was able to get for the base price). Not sure if they're manipulating these ratings or what, but the food is nowhere near as good as the score would suggest.

Google
Great food. The person helping my son was super friendly. The person helping me was impatient. We luckily got a table outside. Inside was too warm. Cool atmosphere. We'll be back.

Google
Came here because I saw it on so many "must eat lists" for Montana. The food was good. But my experience around getting the food was not great. I first tried to go to the location on Reserve to find it closed at 7:00 pm. Since I was only here for 1 more day, I didn't want to pass up the chance to eat here. When I finally got to this store around 7:50 pm, they were out of all rice and it was going to be a 20 minute wait for more. Closing time is 9:00 PM. Several other people left because of this, but like I said, I was already here so I had a bowl made with greens. There were flies buzzing around the register and self serve fountain. They were out of rice. Bottom line here is that the food was good, even though what I got was pretty much the only option. Everything was flavorful. Not sure I will be back if I'm in town again. It was a lot of effort for a mediocre experience but tasty food. They did the best they could that evening.

Google
Went in for a quick, casual dinner road-tripping through the area. Was a little hesitant at first about how good it was going to be based on how simple everything looked, but was very pleasantly surprised. Everything was well seasoned and the flavors combined together seamlessly. For the portion you get the prices are a little expensive though.

Google
Really good, healthy options. I wish the nutritional facts were posted somewhere, I looked all over online but couldn't find anything. I wish you could pick two sides as a standard though, and I would like another protein option. It's pretty well priced for a hefty bowl of food.

Google
Great food in a casual takeout eatery. This chain was new to us, but the young guy couldn't actually answer any questions. Luckily, another older staff member stepped in and answered questions and made suggestions. Very tasty bowls and salads with multiple options. Great place for an easy, healthy meal. Highly recommend the tilapia.

Google
Foods good but I could’ve paid for the small bowl instead of paying $15 for a large only to have it only filled halfway. It’s the amount of food that goes into a small bowl but I paid double the price. Should’ve saved the $15 and went to chipotle.

Yelp
FOOD IS ON POINT! Great place to eat while in Montana! Left feeling wholesome, food is extremely fresh, portions are abundant, Staff is extremely nice/helpful! Don't listen to those in the reviews claiming food is bland, they must be desensitized from eating garbage because it all tastes bomb! I'll DEFINITELY be back!

Yelp
First meal in Missoula! My partner had researched and found this place and it piqued our interest. We walked in and they were quite busy for a time when people do not typically eat. It was a hot day and the inside was even hotter. We ordered our bowls and I got chicken and my partner got beef. This place has a lot of potential but the meats were very dry and it was quite... flavorless... I did feel healthy though so that is a plus. My main advice for this place is that they need to add a bit more of the toppings since most of the flavors came from there.

Yelp
First time, not convinced I chose the best possible option, but that's the thrill of discovery : ) And make no mistake, I'll try this again with my wife and the extended family. Think of this (maybe) as Cafe Rio, Brazilian style. Flavor pops, and for me that's huge. I eat out far too often because of work, and what can I say, I just need the culinary equivalent of the taste bud double take. This delivered that, and, if, as I suspect, I can increase my dining pleasure here by 10-15%, I will take credit for discovering the New World.

Yelp
Definitely not Brasilian food....more brasilian style...some things are simular...atleast they have Pão de queijo, Brigadeiros and Guaraná. Wish they had Coxinha. It tends to be expensive for what it is...rice bowl with beans and alittle meat.

Yelp
Your body will thank you for eating here! I had some fried food elsewhere prior and my stomach wasn't feeling all that great but once I tried my bowl I was pleasantly surprised and almost ate everything! There are lots of healthy toppings and some I wouldn't normally eat but I'm so glad I tried something new. Ordering style is just like Chipotle as others have mentioned. Fun fountain drinks available. Don't forget to add their cheese bread to your order!

Yelp
Excellent vegetarian rice bowls with choice of protein,...sauce and side, very tasty and filling too..

Yelp
It was amazing. Really good food. One of the best places I ate at while visiting from out of town. Service was amazing. The young lady working there explained all of the flavors, was very patient and helped me pick out a bowl. I had 4 to go orders and she handled everything like a champ. I'll definitely be back when visiting again. The flavors of my bowl were indescribable and hit the spot. So yum.

Yelp
In the past food here has been good, but today I was appalled at the food and the service. Many of the food containers had not been turned out with fresh even though they were empty and until I asked the employee to stop scraping the container and get a new one he gave me old hard rice and flakey bits of collard greens. The employee clearly didn't hear my sauce request as once I got all the way back to work I found out he didn't even put ANY sauce on it!!! Not worth the money I paid and honestly am unsure when I'll be back.

Yelp
Soooo yummy! Love 5 on black and all the different options to make your bowl with. Lots of seating inside and the workers are quick! Would recommend this place!

Yelp
Driving through, checked Yelp and Five on Black had an interesting menu, we were intrigued so we stopped. Some reviews complained that the food was bland so, I tried made choices that would add flavor. I chose: the Spring salad base, tilapia protein. With spicy coconut sauce. With the toppings of: tomato vinaigrette, Spicy chimichurri and cilantro. The coconut sauce and the spicy chimichurri added great flavor I loved the meal. I chose a small bowl that was perfect size to not leaving me overly full. Service was great as the explained the different choices. I loved the interior, it was fun and a great design! I would definitely come back if I'm the area.

Yelp
I was intrigued by this place because it's a fast casual Brazilian food like a Brazilian Chipotle. It's nice to have that kind of option when for the most part you only hear about Brazilian steakhouses that are way too pricey for a lunch meal. When you walk in the set up is the same as in Chipotle. You choose your base, your meat, your sides, your sauces, and your toppings. Because this was my first time I didn't know which ones to get so I asked to get basically a little bit of everything. I ordered half chicken and half beef and all the sides and sauces. I preferred the beef to the chicken and I really liked the sweet potatoes. The collard greens were surprisingly really good and had more flavor than I was expecting. The spicy coconut sauce was delicious and I can totally see why it's very popular. I had a little of everything and everything was pretty good and filling. This is a really cool kind of restaurant and I wish they had locations closer to me!

Yelp
Nice idea. Brazilian cuisine in a Chipotle atmosphere. Food is bland, I guess that's why they push all the sauces (some with heat some with flavor). It was on the light side so that's what we were after. Nice service at the counter to explain the food, make suggestions, and do some up-selling. Place was busy at 6 on Sunday, and it was very clean.

Kristi R.

Yelp
The quality of the food is superb. Healthy options all around. I'm hopeful we will get a location in the Flathead Valley. Highly recommend. Excellent service as well.

Sean S.

Yelp
So good. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful made a great recommendation and loved my bowl. Very tasty with loud flavors love it. Would be a regular if I was a local for sure Highly recommend

Yelp
This is a Brazilian version of Chipotle. I was thoroughly impressed with my meal here. I would 100% go back here and recommend it to a friend. It is great if you are a carnivore or a vegan, it has plenty of options. The food is fresh, delicious, tasty, and healthy. The spicy coconut sauce was probably the best part of the meal. I cannot think of another restaurant that has this combination in a sauce but it brought the whole bowl together. The sauce went well with the sweet potatoes which were loaded with flavor. The chicken was cut into tiny chunks which allowed everything in the bowl to be mixed together. The chicken was well cooked, not a ton of flavor but no complaints. The cheese roll is a must, light, fluffy and good to soak up the sauce with your meal. The Chimichurri brought some heat and the farofa enhanced all of the flavors. The farofa is a must get as well as the spicy coconut sauce, and cheese roll. This place was well worth the 5 star review and the $15 for a large bowl. I was not able to finish it in one sitting but it was still damn delicious even as a leftover.

Yelp
If your a fan of S. American flavor you should try this place! We had the Brazilian stew and the tilapia. I added some heat to the stew and both dishes had very good, complex flavors! Prices are as would be expected and service is friendly and helpful. It is a little loud and by that I mean the servers yelling back and forth to each other about their personal lives.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious food, unique flavors, cool ambience! Would definitely recommend for a quick and delicious lunch! Service was great too!

Yelp
Go hang a salami, I'm a lasagna hog is a palindrome. Palindrome is not a palindrome. Five stars.
google avatar

Vanessa A.

Yelp
A little bland if you don't order right but it was really good. The people were super nice and the area was nice too
google avatar

Bea P.

Yelp
It's like Chipotle, but better. But Chipotle is also really good. Loved their cheese-bread and organic sodas!

Tesella T.

Yelp
The only reason for the decent ratings has to be due to the lack of quality food available in Missoula. I ordered a bowl and everything was piled on and I couldn't tell what was what. There was no flavor. No fresh taste. Bland pile of gunk in a bowl. The employees looked like they didn't care about anything. Sad. Didn't this place just open recently?
google avatar

Caroline D.

Yelp
Quick spot, I had a rice dish with tofu, collard greens, chimichurra and coconut sauce. I would recommend asking for less sauce as they really pour it on there.
google avatar

Charlyn G.

Yelp
Fast, flavorful & fullfilling food! This is basically a brazillian Chipotle. When ordering you choose from a menu for options: a base, protein, sauce and toppings. You can also get some pan de queijo which is a very popular 'snack' in Brazil. The ones here was okay. It was more on the cheesy end than I prefer - but if you love cheese, I'm sure you'll like this. As someone who's been to Brazil...this is not an authentic Brazillian restaurant. I feel that they cater the food to match American profile tastes, but the essence of the flavors and combinations of ingredients are there. That is, the sweet potato, tomatoes, tilapia and mango. Nevertheless, the food is good. Highly reccomend this place if you're looking for a quick meal during your drive by Missoula.
google avatar

Tina B.

Yelp
Tasty healthy treat! First time visiting - will definitely add this to our "must stops" when we are in Missoula. The staff were very welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable. The bowls were flavorful and the cheese buns a nice addition. Great experience!
google avatar

Andrew N.

Yelp
GREAT food! Highly recommend the tofu and spicy coconut sauce. A little expensive for portion size, but worth it in my book!

Karyn B.

Yelp
First time we tried it and it was amazing. It's so nice to fish as an option that's fresh on the menu. That's also quick and healthy.. I got the rice bowl with white rice, lemon roasted tilapia, roasted veggies, coconut roasted sweet potatoes, spicy coconut sauce, on top and cilantro. Delicious. There soda options are awesome too.

Yelp
So we went to their Bozeman location last time we passed through I5 in Montana, and they were out of Feijoada. For the uninitiated Feijoada is the prized dish of Brazil. You start with grilled meats and bones, and make a deep broth for hours. Then you cook the black beans in said broth for many more hours. Well we called ahead and they said they had some left, and we hurried to get it. We ordered the Feijoada (Brazilian Stewed Beef) rice bowl, with white rice, black beans, topped with chimichurri (Brazilian spicy salsa) and farofa (shaved dried cassava).

Selah C.

Yelp
Amazing food, the flavors were delicious and I love the building your own bowl aspect
google avatar

Kristina M.

Yelp
The food is divine! You can't go wrong with the dishes at this restaurant. The food is healthy and filling. I always get two meals out of a large bowl. The restaurant is best for a quick pick up and take home dish, however, employees are quick and kind.
google avatar

Britt B.

Yelp
The BEST delicious and fast Brazilian food!! must try the coconut sauce with sweet potatoes, chicken or beef or roasted veggies and try all toppings and a cheesy bun!

Nick K.

Yelp
Food is always amazing. Always served with a smile. Always clean and presentable. Overally I would highly reccomend.
google avatar

Jen B.

Yelp
Food was bursting w/ flavor. Brazilian food, never thought I'd try something like this but I'm a regular now. Great experience clean in both locations. Speedy service.

James F.

Yelp
Sorry to say was not impressed, the service was good but food was mediocre in my opinion. I think I enjoyed the Craft soda more than the food.
google avatar

Jami W.

Yelp
Build your own Brazilian bowl. I love these concepts because you can really get all you want in you're meal without feeling like you're being annoying. This place has all fresh ingredients that they are cooking/making in clear view. They offer a lot of options-- personally it's hard to not want everything in the one bowl but they do office to do half scoops so you really can get lots of the options without breaking the bank. Super tasty and much recommended in Missoula.

Yelp
Sunday afternoon, in summer: closed due to lack of staff. Bummer! We have enjoyed 5 on Black, but they are no different than so many places at this point in the pandemic: short on staff.

Yelp
We were strolling through downtown Missoula a few days ago (Wednesday, to be precise) and decided that we'd try this place. It's sort of like Brazil meets Chipotle (it's food bowls). It looked nice and since we got to pick the fixings, I could be sure of getting healthy gluten-free options. We both ordered basically the same thing. Except, BF got the cheesy roll. You pick five things (thus, I gather, the name). 1. base. I got brown rice/greens. BF got white rice/greens. 2. protein. They had a special rosted pork, so we both got that. 3. side. Both got picked collard greens. 4. sauce. We both opted for the spicy coconut. 5. topping. We also chose the farofa (toasted cassava flour mixture that's gluten-free (whee)) and some chimichurri. I was expecting FLAVOR since this was Brazilian food. It tasted just...well...okay. Most of the flavor came from the sauce. Everything else was a conveyance. BF didn't finish his lunch (which is an abboration). It was meh. They had awesome Tractor Beverage Co. (organic craft fountain drinks). BF had root beer and mine was the creme soda with other fancy delicious flavors mixed in.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the bowls here. My husband used to study abroad and was obsessed with their puffy little cheese balls. We got them by the bag because they are so good. This is also the first time that my hubby had something with coconut milk in it and loved it. Great flavors and good feelings. We were on vacation and been eating so much greasy food that this place was our saving grace. They follow covid guidelines but still had some outdoor seating. I would love to try all of their bowls.
google avatar

Alexandra M.

Yelp
Amazing place! I wish they still had a location in Denver. I really appreciate that everything but one item is dairy free. Staff was very friendly.
google avatar

Susan P.

Yelp
Yes! Wanted a protein/veggie dinner, this hit the spot. Think Brazilian poke bowls: base of rice, greens, or mixed, add steak, chicken, fish, or other protein choice, then add side (sweet potatoes were awesome), and finally add sauces and toppings! Yum! We all ended up with something different and all enjoyed them! Wish we had one at home.

Bill S.

Yelp
South side location: Was my go-to place for lunch and have never been disappointed. Today was an exception. I ordered a large Feijoada Brazilian Stew and my bowl was 90% brown rice and the remainder was some stew broth and the other fixings I ordered. Very disappointed. The price has gone up substantially over the last 2-3 years which I understand but $14.50 for a bowl of rice was very disappointing.
google avatar

Kathirazhagan A.

Yelp
I was in town for a night and saw good reviews on this one. This place did not disappoint me at all. I took the stew with white rice and spicy coconut and each of us ordered different proteins like fish and chicken. Lovely food, nice trance music allows you to enjoy the food and I would say must visit for this place.
google avatar

Yelp
Argentinian take on the Poke Bowls! Great!!! Argentina stew, on brown rice, Chimmichuri cilantro, plus more flavors. Loved it!
google avatar

Leica G.

Yelp
We ordered from Five on Black during our trip to Missoula. We tried the Brazilian bowl with chicken and vegetables, which we favored over the Brazilian stew with fish and vegetables. These bowls are packed and nutrient dense. The Brazilian bread was okay but one of the balls was dry and hard. You can see in the photo that it's brown vs the yellow one. The other was soft and tasty. Based on our experience, I suggest the Brazilian bowl with chicken.
google avatar

David F.

Yelp
The delivery menu was compact without beverages or desserts. Basically, a bowl - albeit delicious - with brown rice, chicken, cilantro, etc and some very cold "biscuits" for lack of better term. Why a 3? I can't give more because of the inconvenience and inconsideration of not including utensils (even plastic would have sufficed) and napkins. Had to get some from the dining room at the hotel plus a coke! The driver was on time. No issue there. Come on, think about who your delivery food to.
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
Very clean food prepared quickly in a pleasant environment. Indoor and outdoor seating is limited, I recommend ordering to-go and eating at Caras park when the weather is nice.
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
Great flavors, music, and tasty. Friendly staff. Definitely a unique find. Hope to visit again.
google avatar

Hailey T.

Yelp
Love at first bite! So yummy, super reasonably priced, and really nice staff and fun vibes. 10/10

Linda C.

Yelp
Great food! Great staff. Five selections of ingredients make it very much to your personal taste. Get the stew and the yummy biscuits!

Matt O.

Yelp
We eat here regularly and used to love it. After today's experience with the price increasing for a large bowl to $14.50 and the quality of food being horrible, we will have to look for a new Missoula go-to after school treat. Very disappointed.
google avatar

Nicole Z.

Yelp
Super-fresh, very filling. Loved the sweet potatoes - they had good form but were super easy to smash around a little. So I mixed some of the potatoes with other ingredients and popped the rest in my mouth. The restaurant is cozy but really clean and everyone behind the counter had energy and smiles. Good vibes, fast lunch, tasty food.....what else could I ask for with the 20 min I had to spend on a quick bite to eat? Oh - and the Brazilian buns - easy to savor with that warm cheese bite in the middle. As for other reviewers commenting on the bland taste - they might be creating their own bowls missing key flavors - if you want to go with one of the suggestions that suits you, it will have flavor, guaranteed. Plus - add some of the extra spice they have available on the side or at the tables. Even a teeny splash might help if you've picked a combo that isn't hitting that flavor note you wanted. And last but certainly not least....ask an employee! They're good about combining what you say you want vs. what the bowl will actually taste like.
