11 Best North Carolina Diners | Eater Carolinas

"In a city renowned for its buzz-worthy restaurants and chic eateries, Five Points is a landmark for those who crave something a bit more nostalgic. Just steps away from downtown Asheville, this 1972 diner continues to serve its regulars seven days a week, through generations of local family ownership. Here, customers are like extended family, and most are known on a first-name basis. From the hefty eight-ounce ribeye steaks and over a dozen varieties of stuffed omelets, it’s clear why Five Points has kept guests coming back for almost half of a century. Don’t stop at its generous breakfast offerings, the Five Points lunch and dinner crowds are equally as busy. This diner’s best-selling dishes are tied between its fried seafood platters and roasted Greek chicken, which sells out every Wednesday night." - Sara Akhavan

Where to Eat in Asheville

"A local favorite for a large portion of breakfast comfort foods, this classic diner is as down-home as they come. Five Points has dishes like biscuits and gravy, grits, french toast, and other staples, and the prices can’t be beat." - MATADOR_NETWORK

Google
Five Points offers a good old fashioned "diner" experience. Friendly and efficient servers. We were able to get in quickly on a very busy Friday for lunch. Timing is everything. The food was good and sitting at the counter was entertaining. The cooks were slamming and jamming. I had a chicken wrap 🌯 with fries and my wife had an open face roast beef plate with apple sauce and green beans. The only downside for me personally is the place is pretty noisy. My recommendation is to go to Five Points and get there early!

Google
The crab cake eggs Benedict had a perfectly fluffy bernaise, the crab was of good quality, and spiced with a nice dash of paprika and small diced green onions within the sauce. Service constantly checked on our well being. The biscuits are very well cooked. Very satisfying and affordable!

Google
Five Points felt like a slice of Americana - with a Greek twist in the menu. The dining area isn’t large, so it was full on this Saturday morning. We all had either pancakes or a waffle with eggs of various styles. My Belgian waffle was SO good. The bacon was perfect and whoever cooked my eggs actually knew what they were doing. Parking is a little tight, but the effort is worth it. We’ll be back.

Google
This has got to be one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had. The home fries/potatos were delicious and the California omelette was a 10/10!!! Watching the team members work together in harmony was an awesome sight! Like a well oiled machine! The service was great and fast and the food was phenomenal!! If you’re in the area, absolutely come by this place

Google
Wanted to find a place that we don’t have at home and happened upon 5 points. We had a little bit of a wait but it was Saturday & to be expected. Parking lot was a little jammed. My son loved the fluffy pancakes. I love that the home fries were not deep fried. Staff was friendly and attentive. Food was hot and served quickly.

Google
The parking lot was crowded and I had to wait for a table which I took to be a sign I had found a great place to eat. They have a wonderful menu of things to choose from! Service was friendly and great even with it crowded. Food was very good and portions were so large I couldn't finish. Great small diner feel. Would happily go again if I find myself in the area!

Google
wow. this salmon greek salad stunned my taste buds in ways i cannot describe. i got the farmer's omelet with biscuits + grits which i enjoyed. looking back, i don't think it was too memorable, but i definitely enjoyed the biscuits and abundance of meat in the omelette. the biscuits were very good when warm. the grits didn't have flavor though, but i still liked them. also got to try the gyro + fries, and holy cow, i am flabbergasted. the fries are just so much crispier than you expect, pairing perfectly with the ranch, and the gyro just made such a well rounded bite. i'm also still salivating at the thought of the salmon and will be coming back for it. a little bit of a wait to get in, but once you're in, it goes fast. a little noisy, which makes sense. overall: highly recommend. (p.s. if you get coffee, expect constant refills)

Google
Very solid diner choice. I got an omelette with spinach, tomato, and feta, homefries and a biscuit. The biscuit was delicious! The food was very good and we all left full and happy.

Yelp
Excellent spot for breakfast, had porkchops w eggs and asked for crispy homefries, oh and the biscuits were fantastic. My wife had the French toast w bacon also great. Coffee was good and staff were very nice, fast service Definitely recommend!

Yelp
Solid old fashioned breakfast. Great service. Not many tables. They are packed. If there is a parking space, there is probably a table. We had coffee at our table quickly. I went for the two egg breakfast with bacon, grits, and biscuit. My son has chicken and waffles. Both were very good at a decent price.

Yelp
You can tell that this place is family owned & operated. The service was great and timely, even though it was Christmas eve morning and it was extremelyb busy. The food itself was okay but nothing to write home about in my opinion. Standard diner style breakfast options. It's a small & quaint space and they fit more people inside than I would expect. It definitely gives hometown vibes.

Yelp
We thought this was a restaurant we had been to before but realized this wasn't the same place and we're a bit disappointed. That was short lived however. The service was excellent and the food even better. I'm leaving this review so we can find this wonderful restaurant again on our next trip to Asheville.

Yelp
Delicious brunch spot in Asheville with tons of options on the menu. Small parking lot, and it is popular, so you may have to wait for a table, but it's worth it. The home fries were delicious servers were great. Loved the old diner feel.
google avatar

Jenny M.

Yelp
My favorite lunch spot. Great service and great diner-style food! I've been to 5 points for breakfast and lunch- food is fresh and hot! Looking forward to next time!

Yelp
Good coffee, solid food, friendly folks, quick service. Small space, filled up quick. Will definitely return to try other items!

Yelp
Came to Five Points for breakfast. What a pleasant surprise; delicious food and exceptional service. The restaurant is reminiscent of a Jersey Diner. We are moving to Asheville in January and we will become regulars at Five Points!
google avatar

Shel G.

Yelp
Came to 5 Points Diner for breakfast for the first time on a recent visit to Asheville. The food is delicious and the service was excellent. The atmosphere is that of a NJ diner, which was fun. I can only say good things about it, and we will be returning when we go to Asheville again.

Yelp
When we show up at 12:13 for lunch, get the last parking space, and then have to wait 20 minutes for a table, you know the food is going to be amazing. And it was! Two lamb gyro plates with Greek salad and fries and a Reuben with fries were procured, and vanished in short order. Everything was as good as we'd expected, and the service was fantastic. Altogether, lunch for the 3 of us with 2 fountain drinks came to about $50, which seems to be pretty standard in this town. Definitely worth it in this case!
google avatar

Yelp
Exactly what a diner should be. Generous portions, fast service, plenty of options, and friendly staff.
google avatar

Miciela S.

Yelp
Small dinner feel with delicious food! Best corn beef hash I've had in a long time, eggs were cooked perfectly. Was a small wait since the location is a little small but the staff was very friendly and quick to get us seated and served!
google avatar

Adrian P.

Yelp
Make sure to visit with an empty belly cause they will fill you up with a great breakfast. Highly recommend the Corned Beef Hash. It's only a small place and one that the locals visit so if you are coming from out of town probably get there between 10:30 and 11:00 to miss the breakfast crowd and beat the lunch folks.

Yelp
I had such a taste for a fresh, crunchy salad and the hubby chose this restaurant. We love Greek food and loved this simple little 95.5 seat diner. We got there late breakfast/early lunch time so we peeked at the breakfasts people will devouring. While they looked great, I stayed the course and got my big Greek salad! It was full of croutons, pepper, kalamata olives, tomatoes, feta - and a great house dressing. Hubby got the lamb gyro and the pita and sauce were perfect. If we had more time here we'd probably go again!
google avatar

Yelp
Ate here all 3 mornings. Great food. Excellent service. Coffee is good, cup is never empty. Like sitting at the counter watching the action.

Yelp
We stopped here for breakfast to gear up for a day of hiking. It's akin to a small town diner where everyone knows each others names and the servers memorize your order. The menu is huge, and they offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I ordered a country fried steak and hash browns. The food was plentiful and it was ready in a jiffy. However, it was pretty disappointing. The country fried steak was soggy and chewy. The hash browns were greasy and bland. Overall, I'm guessing this was an off day, as the other reviews of the food are quite glowing. But this just didn't do it for me. I did, however, enjoy the coffee to go.
google avatar

Eldon L.

Yelp
This place is good. Had the corn beef hash my first time and the country fried steak the 2nd time. This place is well priced as well.

Nina H.

Yelp
We were visiting and passed this spot and decided to grab some food. The portions were huge, came out quickly and all the ingredients were really fresh. We loved everything we ordered. It's also reasonably priced for the quality and had tons of parking.
google avatar

Yelp
My spot for breakfast but really it's pre Sunday Church breakfast that I live for, no need for lunch afterwards. get whatever you like it will be good.
google avatar

Mark L.

Yelp
Great spot for good ol' diner food. Good eats and friendly staff. It is a go-to for most locals.

Yelp
If you are looking for an easy going diner, this is it. Food was great, cheap, and in big portions. Our whole meal with tip was $30. We were full for hours. The sausage was so yummy and their home fries are kind of like mashed which was yummy too. Service was great!

Hailey H.

Yelp
Pretty good place to eat. Can be loud and it is a relatively small place. Prices are lower than some places. Two people could eat here for somewhere between $20-40 easily. The food was good but I would not recommend the hashbrowns as they seem to be made of mashed potatoes. Service was good and meal came out quick.
google avatar

Bradley B.

Yelp
This place just makes great food, everything I've had here has been fantastic. The Greek salad was fresh as can be and was quite possibly the best Greek salad I've ever had anywhere. They know what they're doing, go here and give them your business, you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Briana M.

Yelp
So cozy, fast and friendly service, INCREDIBLE food!!! Came for breakfast and got the Florentine omelette with a side of potatoes and a biscuit. SO GOOD.

Marj D.

Yelp
I don't want anything for breakfast that's over the top. 5 Points is classic diner breakfast. Thank you. The Eggs Benedict is a perfect dish. Really love it. We love this spot for breakfast and lunch. Simple and .
google avatar

Nick R.

Yelp
If you like slow service, surly waiters and soggy breakfast food, try Waffle House because this place will blow your mind. Despite the fact that it was busy, we got our food before i expected and it was delightful. The owner even took a minute to stop by and tell us the story of how they got started. Five stars. Eat here or you're a dummy.
google avatar

Yelp
I have never been disappointed when going to five points. I know the don't have drinks like mimosas or bloody Mary's and I always go for breakfast. They have great breakfast from pancakes and waffles to all the egg breakfast you can think of. All of it is tasty and you can watch them cook it in front of you if you sit at the bar. No microwave frozen food all fresh ingredients when they cook. Yum!
google avatar

Yelp
I came to this place last month while I was visiting Asheville. I was craving local food and searched for a while until I found this hidden gem. They have a small parking lot for their customers. This is your traditional diner and you will definitely be surrounded by locals which is always a good thing. We were sitted right away, however, ten minutes after we arrived there was a line waiting (again, an excelent sign). We got a little bit of everything: a gyro with mediterránea salad, french fries, biscuits, french toast and eggs with sausage patties and bacon. Everything came out SUPER QUICK! Which made my fiance happy because I was being a moody grinch since I was hangry. I really liked this place and if I ever go back to Asheville, I will be visiting this place without a doubt.

Yelp
Good food great service would def reccomend.could upgrade the inside and outside to look nicer but the food was good and that's all that matters right!

Yelp
After dropping a friend off at the hospital at 5 AM I looked for an all night diner and settled for a Waffle House. But upon arriving there, the messed up homeless people looked like the zombie apocalypse had arrived. So I found this place which opened at 6. I settled in to wait and was surprised that at 6 there were 5 others waiting. Now I know why. This is the perfect diner. Clean, efficient, amazing hash, eggs not dripping in grease but looking like something I would cook, and crisp dry healthy tasty home fries from fresh potatoes. Even the coffee was good. They serve breakfast all day so I'll be back again --but not so early the next time.

Yelp
I've been in the Asheville area for two years and have found a few very nice places to dine. 5 Points is one of the best here. Food is just right and they have the best french toast anywhere around. Also, thier staff doesn't change; they have the same people cooking, waitIng tables, checking out for the past two years while every other restaurant has had considerable turn over. Great place to eat, great people working there and the owner is not afraid to help out when needed.
google avatar

Yelp
Close to our rental so we stopped in for breakfast. Delicious breakfast sandwiches, omelets and the home fries! We ordered takeout and everything was fresh and hot. Reasonable prices for this area.

Yelp
Local dive diner , wasn't expecting for the food to be that great considering it looks like a little hole in the wall. Boy was I impressed! Best country fried steak I've ever had, sausage links were amazing. Great place for breakfast , would highly recommend

Yelp
Small little restaurant but definitely a good find. There was a wait when we all arrived but happened to be barstools available, so we all posted up there. Diner vibe with an open kitchen, cooks right in front of you. Those men had it down! Food was amazing, just what we were all needing. Four of us enjoyed breakfast, and one ordered the Philly. We left with our bellies full and smiles on our faces. Success.
google avatar

Yelp
Very nice ladies and very friendly place! Made us feel like family/friends. I highly recommend this southern great hospitality place to come and eat.

Lisa V.

Yelp
A classic dinner between the food and the service. Must try the Greekland omelette! Must get there early bc they fill up fast!
google avatar

Sandy B.

Yelp
This is a busy spot for locals especially during Christmas Eve. It is more a friendly diner with counter service and a small amount of tables. Wear something warm as it is cold inside. Waitress was friendly and quick to take your order. The menu has quite a list of foods, about 5 pages long! Foods range from breakfast sandwiches to complete meals. I had a turkey bacon egg and cheese sandwich on an English muffin. I noted that the biscuits must be really good as they were out of them when I ordered at 1:30pm. Stop in and give them a try.

Yelp
Been wanting to eat here for a very long time and glad we tried it on my Birthday. Great local joint that runs like a well oiled machine! Staff were amazing as well as the atmosphere!

Yelp
Excellent in all the areas that matter. Our server Theresa (who joked and told us to call her Therezo) after one of us got chorizo in their omelet, was FANTASTIC. She seemed to know quite a few of the customers, their orders, and kept our coffee cups full the whole time. She also offered a few suggestions after I asked for them. I had the spinach and feta omelet add jalepeno. It was delicious. I ordered the potatoes extra crispy, with wheat toast. Everything was full of flavor and big enough to be filling without any waste. The coffee was fresh and hot. The prices were great for what you get. I dont have a single complaint.

Daniel S.

Yelp
Hey, I know times are hard, but charging a fee for a credit card purchase and not telling the customer is sleazy and underhanded. I had plenty of cash with me and would have used it. I used to like this place. Pity they made such an unfortunate decision.

Y F.

Yelp
The eggs Benedict crab cakes were top notch. Eggs and country potatoes were very satisfying. The biscuits and white gravy were awesome! The omelet was large and didn't finish. Eggs and bacon were good. Egg sandwich and grits were filling. Staff was excellent.
google avatar

Yelp
Coffee was great. Food was good (waffle was a little bland) and cooked well. Very attentive and quick service. Would definitely go back.

Yelp
On my first morning in Asheville, NC, we came here to have a hearty breakfast with the locals. It's a quaint down home diner with personality galore. Our server Theresa was great, funny, nice, and fast. She kept our coffee mugs full and biscuits on the plate. I had the Mexican omelet (subbed chorizo for chili) with cheese grits and a single pancake on the side. The omelet was delicious with the perfect amount of chorizo, cheese, and jalapeños. The cheese grits were deliciously buttery and cheesy and exactly what I was looking for. The pancake was exactly how I like it, crispy on the edge and light and fluffy in the center. Also, the meal came with homemade biscuits and they were flaky, buttery perfection. I can't wait to come back to Asheville and I can't wait to come back here.

Mark G.

Yelp
I am your typical customer who drives by your restaurant every day wanting to stop and see what all the hype is about is. Today was the day I stopped. Well I wasn't disappointed with the breakfast or the service! Checking out was the issue, I stood at the register for about ten minutes not being acknowledge ( like I was invisible) as other customers came in to pick up food or to be seated. It was obvious to the other customers who acknowledge that I was here first. Again it was obvious; it took a waitress to come up to check me out at the register.

Yelp
Yes we had a bit of a wait at 8:20 on a Thursday morning but it was short. The food was delicious. Service was good

Tricia H.

Yelp
My Jersey side was super happy walking into this place this morning. The food was delicious and the staff was super nice. Be patient if you have to wait but the food was worth it. (I honestly forgot to take a pic because I was so excited to eat).

Yelp
It blows my mind that up until a few weeks ago, it had been like 10 years since I ate at 5 Points. I love me a little diner and was super pleased with my experience at 5 Points and can't wait to go back again. I actually went there because I was craving pancakes and assumed that it would be a great place to get a big ol' pile of pancakes hot off the griddle. But once I sat down at the bar overlooking the kitchen, I was mesmerized by the smell of greasy eggs and toast. I ended up ordering an egg and cheese sandwich with tomato, lettuce and mayo with a side of hashbrowns. I was not disappointed. Although this is such a simple food, oh boy, was I a happy person. The cheap american cheese melted on the over-hard egg on perfectly toasted bread....ohhhhhhhh yeah. That's the right stuff there. Nothing fancy, sure, but hits the spot! 5 Points is located on the corner of Broadway and Chestnut. The parking lot is small and kinda sucks, I highly recommend backing into a parking spot if possible so you can easily leave after your meal. It's really close to downtown and Whole Foods. The diner is pretty small but has a bunch of table seating against the window and back along the wall and there is a long bar with about 12 seats that overlooks the kitchen. This is the best spot to sit if you're alone or with just one other person because you can watch the chefs hard at work making meals. They're like a well-oiled machine, quick and efficient. The serving staff is friendly and quick as well. I had such a great experience here and am already looking forward to going back soon.

Yelp
A no fuss breakfast spot that me and my boyfriend like to describe as an elevated Waffle House. The lines will be long, but don't worry, it moves very quickly (unlike another infamous breakfast spot with "Point" in its name.) We were seated at the counter which gave us a front row seat to the kitchen which was chaotic and beautiful at the same time. I went for the eggs benedict with home fries while my boyfriend got their french toast. The eggs benedict was delicious. The eggs were perfectly poached, runny and delicious. Their english muffin was fluffy and delicious as well and the canadian bacon was good. Their home fries are very interesting, more like a cross between hash browns and mashed potatoes. It's hard to describe, but we weren't fans of it. The french toast on the other hand was really delicious. Usually it's covered in berries, fruits, some weird syrup or whip cream but this french toast was as simple as french toast should be. Lightly dusted with powdered sugar and sent on its way. It seems like their whole menu is also available all day because we definitely saw a burger and a fried fish platter served up at 9 AM which is pretty great because their menu has ALOT to offer.

Yelp
One of Asheville's BEST places to eat. Great food, wonderful service, great crew in the kitchen/behind the scenes. Bossman Louie has given all of us a home away from home for comfort food...excellent prices and huge servings. Delicious. Highly recommended to locals and visitors alike!

Johnny M.

Yelp
Visited 5 Points for the first time today and they run a top notch restaurant. The service is on point and the food is fantastic. This is a clean and comfortable diner and I encourage everyone staying in Asheville or passing through to eat here, you can't go wrong.
