The Best Coffee Shops in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"When Lee Carter and Caleb Garn founded Five Watt in 2014, they catalyzed the coffee-as-cocktails trend in the Twin Cities. Using the shop’s own bitters line, baristas concoct clever flavor combos like the beloved Kingfield, made with Five Watt coriander bitters, vanilla, and black Hawaiian sea salt. Choose any of the three locations — each one has a unique vibe, but all are equally welcoming." - Stacy Brooks

Find the Best Matcha Tea in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Five Watt can always be counted on for a unique spin on any beverage. Just like the coffee “cocktails” on the menu, Five Watt’s matcha latte, the Hokai Amplifier, is treated more like a complex dish than a simple beverage, with a splash of basil syrup and a dash of fennel." - Alex Lodner

Google
Love this place! Definitely a great place for the pickiest of coffee drinkers. Have been coming for years. Today I ordered a Gibraltar (aka Cortado) and Vivian made it so pretty I almost didn’t want to drink it . But of course I did and the deliciousness never fails 💖

Google
Combine chic boutique, grunge rock, and exquisite coffee and you get Five Watt. For starters, the roaster puts forth perhaps the best coffee in Minneapolis, presenting a multiple full bodied roasts that true coffee lovers will enjoy. Atop that, a creative menu and a skilled team behind the espresso bar craft phenomenal drinks that are coffee forward (I would contend they have the best Miel in the State and, perhaps, the Midwest). Finally, the bustling but not noisy atmospherics make this a coffee shop perfect for getting your day started or finding an extra jolt of energy. So many boutique coffee shops prioritize slowing down; the reverse to caffeine’s effects. Five Watt leans into coffee’s chemical boost, creating a great space for getting hard work done or meeting new people. This is a must stop for anyone who truly likes coffee visiting Minneapolis.

Google
This is one of the most unique shops where you feel so connected so fast everything is chill and great Service was sweet and great and you can tell they know what they doing. Food and drinks was good. Is not my style of shop to chill at However is fun to come sometimes and have cool drinks.

Google
This is hands down my favorite coffee shop in the cities. Everyone who works here seems to be multi-talented and friendly. The coffee is really tasty, the espresso has deep flavor and is bright enough to shine through in their delicious seasonal and staple lattes.

Google
Delicious and very light crispy croissant. Mayday iced coffe was delicious. Great customer service and nice atmosphere.❤️

Miriam Wade

Google
Delicious coffee and great atmosphere! Got one of the seasonal specialty drinks, and I loved it.

Google
This place has THE best pumpkin spice made with REAL pumpkin! It’s just so delicious and thoughtful of five watt to make it with real pumpkin especially because some of us (me) are allergic to the pumpkin syrup everywhere else has but I’m not allergic to real pumpkin!! Thank you so much five watt for making my whole pumpkin day!!!! :):):):):):):)

Google
Stopped in because I was picking up meat next door at Finer. Service was friendly and quick. I got the Northeast Fog and it was SUPER tasty. Picked up a ham and cheese croissant for later and some coffee for home.

Yelp
I adore this little coffee shop. I used to live down the street from here and I would walk to it almost every single day. I still go there now (even though I live all the way in Bloomington) and it is always always worth it. The staff there is always so kind and friendly! I never feel rushed or weird with them and my drink always comes out perfectly every single time. The ambiance is warm and friendly. There are always people working on their computers, reading, or having their own little conversations.. I just feel at peace here! There is also a cute little outdoor space that is so nice in the summer and fall. Every drink that I have had here has turned out delicious and amazing and fresh! Highly recommend.

Yelp
Great coffee. Nice staff. Kind of run down interior. That's pretty much it. Just stopped in for an Americano after lunch. Paid my $5 and left. Great Americano

Yelp
Sweet coffee shop, fresh beans, and a nice open air indoor/outdoor situation going on for a nice early June Minneapolis afternoon. Service was nice enough, not nothing noteworthy or over the top. All in all, good cup fuel and good vibes that carried the show.

Yelp
Five Watt Coffee is a lovely neighborhood cafe. I was enticed by their specialty drinks, and pastries. I tried a very well made iced matcha latte, and two unique Danish pastries, one eggplant and one berry. Both were very delicious.
google avatar

Jennifer O.

Yelp
Five watt has some really unique and tasty beverages! I tried the busy beaver and really liked it a lot. The prices were a little high, but not horrible. I also bought a bag of beans for home and the coffee was tasty.
google avatar

Jeremy S.

Yelp
Some of the best coffee and tea around. They usually have some great breakfast snacks to offer, but with COVID-19 see to be more limited. They are now offering outdoor seating because of the pandemic, however if your looking for shade get there before noon before the sun comes over the building.

Sam B.

Yelp
Ordered a pollinator, brought my yeti in and paid $8 for a coffee that was half full. The drink tasted good but not coming back for a half full drink at full price.

Yelp
My personal favorite coffee shop in Minnesota. Staff is extremely knowledgeable and cleanliness is always at the forefront of their standards! I'm a big fan of smooth espresso with a hint of cherry. There drip coffee "line check" is always very smooth and easy to drink. I am a huge fan of getting a double cappuccino that consist of four shots of espresso and steamed milk. I Feel like there coffee is so smooth that I end up drinking it too fast. That's why I double it. The area is also great for meeting people , there's a lot of people that pull out their laptops and do work. It's definitely a place that you can have a conversation and you don't feel like you're being to loud. This happens to be my favorite location even know there's multiple around the cities. I'm a huge fan of the staff and my drinks are extremely consistent. If you're looking for a great cup of coffee or espresso drink, this is a must in the twin cities.

Yelp
A must stop whenever I'm in the Cities. Excellent coffee (highly recommend the Kingfield), service was great and the atmosphere was edgy and earthy. Also really liked that they do live music.
google avatar

Yelp
I don't do espresso drinks... unless I'm here. These are some of the best fancy coffee drinks you'll get, not just in the Twin Cities, but in my opinion anywhere in the US (and I lived in Seattle for a couple years). Their unique gimmick is the use of cocktail bitters as a seasoning, which doesn't add measurable alcohol, but brings flavor you can't get in a water or syrup extraction. My go to is the Busy Beaver, which has an unusual smokier sweetness from molasses. On the other hand, today was a seasonal latte garnished with pink peppercorn, which was a spice party in my mouth. They do have some limited food, but basically, drink coffee, enjoy the wifi, get some work done, and for lunch, look elsewhere. Someone needed that table anyway.

Mal O.

Yelp
Great coffee and atmosphere! Only complaint is we ordered a ham and cheese croissant as well as a chocolate croissant and they don't heat them up so it was very cold. Otherwise would recommend!
google avatar

Katy I.

Yelp
I love Five Watt, especially this location. All the baristas are amazing and a delight to chat with. I'm addicted to the Pollinator (iced) and they make it so well. Yea, it's a little splurge, but it's worth it. Very community-oriented and a lovely spot to stop and chat with friends or get some work done. Good vibes all around.
google avatar

Tanner G.

Yelp
Some of my favorite coffee in MPLS. The kind of specialty coffee shop that makes great drinks but you can still bring your parents to. Busy Beaver in the winter, 1994 BOYZ in the summer.
google avatar

Alyson M.

Yelp
Desperately needed a coffee date with a friend of mine. She suggested this place and I was more than happy to oblige. I went in and explained I had never been there before and the batista was really helpful in suggesting just the right drink for me. After learning that they make their own syrups and bitters from scratch, I landed on the gin basil smash. It was heavenly. I paired that with a cheese croissant and it was the perfect snack. I will definitely be back here to try the other specialty drinks!
google avatar

Julia L.

Yelp
I really like the Black Sea salt they add to the lattes! Their seasonal special is a pumpkin latte with real pumpkin. Plenty of seating and outlets, great for both large groups and 1:1s. Located in northeast near dogwood and spyhouse. Just a note that their lattes are $2-3 more expensive than others.. a small 10oz latte was $9 after tip
google avatar

Alexandra Y.

Yelp
I really liked the uniqueness of the coffee. It definitely takes you out of your comfort zone if your used to the Foo Foo coffees. I can't remember what I had the 2 times I've been there, but I would go again. I had 2 different items too.
google avatar

Yelp
Five Watt has become one of my favorite coffee shops in the cities! (If not my most favorite!) I don't typically stay and work or hangout, but I enjoy their coffee so much! It's usually pretty busy at the NE location, so I grab and go, which is just fine for me! The Kingfield latte is incredible!! I don't usually gravitate towards super sweet coffee, but that specialty latte is done perfectly in my opinion. I get it iced with oat milk. It's a must try! The service is always great - employees are kind and efficient. I also noticed they seem to work well together and have a cohesive system. They have a large parking lot which is also a HUGE plus in the city!
google avatar

Megan S.

Yelp
Oh my god! The coffee was amazing! We had the busy beaver and the Shot in the nuts 2.0 and they were both amazing! I love finding shops with creative and well executed specialty drinks! Thanks Five Watt!
google avatar

Abhijit S.

Yelp
Very good coffee in Minneapolis! I asked the barista what would be less sweet and more coffee content, and I was rightfully suggested , Kingsfield , which was awesome. I absolutely loved it.

Yelp
We stayed down the street and this became my go to each morning. I got iced vanilla lattes three mornings in a row, they were delicious each time. They cost about a buck more than the ones in Austin, so with a tip it's a $7 coffee, so I wouldn't do this three days in a row at home, but to buy a bag of coffee and creamer on vacation, meh, not worth the hassle. The garage door in front of a bar with outlets was cool, I'd come here if I lived locally. It's not the warmest place of you aren't a regular, but that's most places.

Yelp
I woke up this morning with my heart set on trying a paticular shop that I've been itching to get to. Much like every other time, it was closed. Apparently my cravings kick in on Mondays, the only day they aren't open. Perfect. Be that as it may, I still needed to be caffeinated or things would soon turn ugly. The hunt began - to the Yelposphere in search of plan B. What caught my attention here was the house made bitters. Intrigued, I needed to know more. Nitro brew also available... hmm... my very tolerant of my whims husband's favorite. My choice was made. I'd do this for him! (& because I really needed more input on these bitters... and black Hawaiian salt...) Seats were about 60% full, tho the majority were solos at 2-seater tables... and most were deep into the Matrix. No worries, we plopped our butts on the stage and watched - both of the guys behind the counter were surprisingly personable. It was easy to feel comfortable. On to what you really want to know. Is the coffee any good. My husband said his nitro cold brew was & he appreciated it not being full of sweeteners. As for mine, the kingfield, it was thick and creamy, with a taste as rich as the aroma. The touch of salt offset the sweetness and enhanced the flavors, adding balance and depth. The cup finished clean, no syrupy residue or unmixed settlement. Good to the last drop has an entirely new meaning! The added selection of toilet tissue was a fun touch and, obviously, a crowd pleaser. Parking can be tricky, piles of snow and limited space. Seating can be just as tricky. Totally worth a stop tho - if you like a lil craftiness.
google avatar

Noah L.

Yelp
Good coffee (cappuccino) with some sweet and light notes. They were moving pretty quickly though so they sort of just poured the milk in to the cup without really integrating it (as in, no latte art), but I was happy since it tasted good. Shop had some nice outdoor seating.
google avatar

Massimo C.

Yelp
Yes!! I found it, i found it!! The next most expensive coffeshop! Small latte 8 oz... not even 10oz and a chocolate croissant for $10. Depressed neighborhood and most expensive coffeshop!!! Sad.
google avatar

Darmon H.

Yelp
Bustling neighborhood crammed with fun and interesting restaurants and shops. Great people watching, inspiring interior, and the coffee, fantastic! I had the Large "Kingfield, hot. Wow, it came in a beautiful large coffee cup. The varied ingredients were surprising, and it was topped with black Hawaiian sea salt. Great change from the usual chia latte or cappuccino. I sat and listened to "Braiding Sweetgrass" written and read by Robin Wall Kimmerer. The entire experience was enthralling, plus the barista made me smile.

Annette D.

Yelp
This was by far the best coffee shop experience I have ever had. I'm not much of a coffee drinker. The staff was patient and fantastic at their recommendation. It was so delicious I had to go back every day while I was visiting. The space was quite comfortable to sit and chat with my friend. Highly recommend the Busy Beaver - tastes like a graham cracker.
google avatar

Kathleen B.

Yelp
Fine coffees, skilled baristas, and always kinda busy with cafe peeps hanging out. Perfect to work at, meet a friend at, or in-and-out quick orders.
google avatar

Shelby S.

Yelp
Overpriced and not worth it. I have been here in the past and thought I'd revisit since it has been a while. I never remembered anything special about it. Which when I went again today I felt the same way. There is nothing that stands out to me here. They do have a very different drink selection which people may or may not like. For me it was not for the best. I ordered the KUNG FU GENERATION: Matcha Tea, Five Watt Sweet Fennel Bitters, Milk, Basil Syrup. I really hated it. Basil is just toooooo strong of a flavor. The drink was not even warm when I received it. Which on a chilly day if I ask for my drink hot I at least expect it to be warm. Then the flavors of the drink really turned me off. I love matcha but the combination with basil is just not good. I think it really takes away from the traditional taste that matcha is supposed to exude. I probably won't be coming here anytime soon.

Yelp
On a warm but rainy night, my friend and I sought refuge at Five Watt after dinner ended at another restaurant nearby. Our only goal was to grab some beverages and chit chat some more. This little place on Nicollet kinda grew on me in the 2+ hours we were there. We sat in the very back of the restaurant, right next to the teeny tiny stage with a large "Sunday Service" sign painted on the wall. I seriously wonder how a person can perform in such a small area but hey, more power to him or her! I can't provide any commentary on Five Watt's food but their beverage selection is eye catching, imaginative, and just sounds delicious. I settled for an ice tea (huge glass for only $3.25 btw) but next time I'm in the neighborhood, I wouldn't mind sipping on a specialty beverage like Gin Basil Smash (because really, gin + basil is always a winner) and see who really crawls up on that stage to perform...haha
google avatar

Brock S.

Yelp
The best specialty coffee drinks I've ever had. True mixologist. Small, quaint space but a few great high-too spots facing. Out the window into Nicollet make it particularly nice during the summer. A fun option is to come on Sunday morning for "Sunday Service" where they have someone playing a small organ in the corner.

Yelp
Five Watt is one of my favorite "mini chain" coffee roasters in the Twin Cities. This is one of their three locations, and also probably the smallest. They still offer a full menu, including a ton of espresso drinks, cold brews, and pour overs, as well as sell Five Watt beans. Some of their drinks are super unique, offering flavors that are fairly uncommon. They have particularly good COVID safety, enforcing masking not only while standing/ordering, but also in between drinks too. When I was there, everyone was masked nearly the whole time, with only a few seconds in between for drinking their beverages. So, if you absolutely need to work somewhere public but are concerned about masking, this is probably a good place for you. Parking is a bit hard to find if you are looking to stay for a while, but there's very convenient short-term street parking out front if you are just getting to-go.

Pauline A.

Yelp
Five Watt Coffee is decadent. They serve cocktail-coffee, with interesting flavors that are complex and taste wonderful. This is the place to take out of town guests to get a true NorthEast vibe. Be sure to try their croissants, I believe they are from Vikings & Goddesses, they make your mouth sing.
google avatar

Gretchen P.

Yelp
I get coffee from the Kingfield location nearly everyday. They make the drinks really quick and really well. Oat milk latte is unmatched. Ambience can be a little intimidating though.

Carlos S.

Yelp
Reviewed on a Monday morning. Nice space, great tunes, and perfect cappuccino. Will return.
google avatar

Domingo C.

Yelp
What a great and cozy coffee shop. I attended with a few friends and acquaintances after lunch and was pleasantly surprised. There are many different seating arrangements and the space is fairly accessible. The space was alive with a strong customer base, which was great to see. I could definitely sense a hipster, creative vibe from many of the customers in the space, which was great. I ordered a specialty drink called the "Star Fox 64", which was so intriguing, as I grew up playing the video game and found it nostalgic. It was an espresso drink that contained honey and cinnamon, amongst other ingredients. It was so delicious! It was a great balance of energy, bitter, and sweet. It was so intriguing and was definitely the favorite drink orders amongst the group I went with. I'll definitely be returning to order some of their standard drinks, as well as any other cool speciality drinks!

Cynthia K.

Yelp
Best Cappuccino I've had! The Barista was very helpful and knows his craft!
google avatar

Terral Reed E.

Yelp
Excellent coffee tasty tree and in the summer they can open up the whole front end so you can enjoy the weather.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm from Seattle. I admit to being a coffee snob. (No, Starbucks doesn't count...) Five Watt coffee is one of the few coffee places that stands up to Seattle/Portland coffee! I love it!
google avatar

Jacqueline S.

Yelp
Tasty coffee, funky cafe space For my first time here, I ordered the first and most popular drink on the menu: the Kingfield. the menu of drinks is cocktail inspired and uses all sorts of usual ingredients and combinations. I was overwhelmed by all the options and they all sounded delicious, so I went with the Kingfield with almond milk. The foam on top was sweet and savory with a dash of salt atop the beautiful latte art. At $6 for a large latte, bummer expectations were high. And I really enjoyed it. The cafe has a cool vibe, a little bit industrial but not trying too hard. There's nice light coming in from the window and the temperature was great, not too cool or too stuffy. Their outlets are very accessible which makes it a solid work spot too.
google avatar

Malyn B.

Yelp
Five Watt Coffee on Nicolett has quickly become one of my favorite spots, and even though it's a 15-20 minute drive, it's always worth it. The coffee is just THAT good. I loved ordering an iced vanilla latte with some sort of non dairy milk, and it always tastes amazing. It's flavorful and unlike many other coffees I've tasted around the Twin Cities - it's unique! I love the vibe of the building, and during warm days, they open up the front for some sunlight and fresh air. The staff is friendly and the interior is beautiful. I recommend that everyone stops by Five Watt if they're in the Twin Cities and looking for coffee!

Yelp
Five Watt is one of the more famous coffee shops in the crowded twin cities coffee shop spectrum, though their beans are more varied and somehow better than their narrow choices for brewed coffee. Great product but experience can be uneven. GOOD: Very excellent coffee beans are sold here. If you like rich, flavorful coffees, this is one of the best places to get it it -- at least by the whole bean. Also very good here is the nitro cold brew. Five Watt is one of the few places in Minneapolis that produces a better nitro than Starbucks. Until more coffee shops in the twin cities get nitro right, this is the place to go. MAYBE: The coffee cocktails here are novel and have interesting flavors. However, they are expensive and typically loaded with way too much ice. It's a neat idea that I wish more coffee houses offered. I sure do wish they served more than one kind of drip. The same thing day after day can be repetitive, and it's why I find myself visiting less often. MEH: The Nicollet Avenue location is cramped, crowded, and dark. Can be loud during busy times. This is all OK if you are in the mood for that sort of thing. But not the place for intimate discussion. The new location on Lyndale looks promising, and already feels more open and less crowded (and less dark). Disappointed that the only coffee on drip seems to be their less impressive medium roast. Overall Five Watt is good and I recommend it for your basic coffee needs. The beans they sell are absolutely excellent, and the nitro cold brew is better than just about anywhere. Atmosphere and overall experience can be uneven, and it can be boring having only one drip coffee choice every day forever. But good enough if you are in the area and need coffee.

Yelp
I was staying at the Marriott by MSP Airport - and was headed to the Guthrie Theater in downtown Minneapolis - stopped in here for some morning caffeine. Coffee was really good! Strong and tasty! Got the necessary caffeine levels up to the point necessary to get my neurons firing! There is a decent amount of seating here - lot of folks hanging out, enjoying their coffee/espresso and working on the their computers.
google avatar

Kayla L.

Yelp
cute shop! And the coffee is good. However, it is kinda spendy. They do have a variety of fun flavors to give a try though! It's a fun shop to check out, but it won't be my regular stop. It was almost $7 for a large coffee (only up charge was 25 cents for oat milk). I ordered a latte. Like I said, coffee was good!
google avatar

C G.

Yelp
Delicious coffees - the bitters are an interesting twist. My daughter enjoyed some drink with a brownie butters addition. I opted for a simpler drink: iced Oatmilk mocha, but I asked for a sprinkle of salt on the top. Absolutely delicious.
google avatar

Megan M.

Yelp
So yummy!!! Went there just awhile ago and wow!! They have so many delicious and creative drinks. They truly have coffee that you wouldn't be able to get anywhere else. I love their creativity and will definitely be going back soon to try another drink!
google avatar

Queenie C.

Yelp
I decided to come here because it was rated as one of the best coffee shops in Minneapolis, so of course, the traveler in me has this "thing" where i like to go to local coffee shops to buy coffees i like to bring home to make in Toronto. This is no exception either. The place was buzzing with activity when i walked in. Loved the look and ambience of the cafe, and they also have a patio area for guests to sit on. There's wifi for those who wish to work off their laptops and the noise level is pretty good. I decided to try one of their cold drinks since it was a hot day and it did not disappoint! cold brew was great!! their drinks you can tell they def. put thought into it and it's super creative. their coffee here is definitely very good, and they do have a few options - i chose their darkest roast and bought a bag of it to bring home - excited to try making some expresso/coffee with these beans :) the baristas are also helpful in explaining about their beans and also their drink selection. Anyone who is in town should DEFINITELY check out this place!!!
google avatar

Kent M.

Yelp
Didn't realize I had been here prior. Apparently about a year ago. And is still an excellent 6 shot Americano and honey with incredible good chocolate chip cookie. I like this.

Yelp
Pumpkin spice lawsuit!! This drink is surprisingly fabulous. I'm going to say it's due to the fact the ingredients are real unlike local chains serving concocted chemicals. Love Thank you Halia

Yelp
A truly on point , hip coffee shop. From homemade bitters to some really unique concoctions mixed with some edge and personality, this place has got it going on. I want to use the word "hipster" to describe it. I stopped by for a caffeine fix before taking the kids to Mall Of America because, duh, I was going to need something to help me conquer that place with two little girls in tow. I tried the "Holy Moly" which was cold brew, agave, habanero hellfire shrub, ancho chile and mole spray. Definitely had a big kick, but it was delish!! Very unique. It was hard to choose just one of their carefully crafted specialty drinks to enjoy. You can see a lot of thought is put into creating each and every drink. The price certainly reflects that, but I don't mind paying it for a fantastic beverage. Sometimes you need to treat yourself to something other than blah coffee from run of the mill coffee chains. I seek places like this out (it's actually become a new obsession) and this stop was exactly what I was looking for. Way to go! This place is great for getting some work done or catching up with friends. There are a few tables outside. It's bigger and has a small stage in the back for open mic nights! They used to have an "Oatmeal Sunday" too which I think they MAY bring back. Neat.
google avatar

Katie U.

Yelp
By far one of the coolest coffee shops in the twin cities. I can't get over how creative the drink concoctions are. Lavender, grapefruit bitters, coriander, honey and so much more. Their specialty drinks are so inventive and better yet scrumptious. I recently had the May Day which is Cold brew on tap with some sweet bitters. The two flavor combos were the perfect balance for a refreshing flavor. A few extra tips - this location is a little small so the seating can be sparse, especially on a busy afternoon. Most street parking spots around this part of town don't have meters so you can park for free but there are also several other businesses right next to the shop so the parking can get congested.
