Detroit’s Best Soul Food Restaurants

"Part of the California-based chain founded by Kevin Johnson, a former NBA star who entered politics and survived eight years of controversy as mayor of Sacramento, this newer Paradise Valley restaurant offers a fun homage to soul food. Set within the space formerly occupied by Detroit Seafood Market, this bright and open space features artwork that provides nods to the city’s legacy in music and pop culture throughout. The menu is inspired, in part, by Johnson and his wife Michelle’s year-long travels across the country prior to opening their first location in his hometown in search of inspiration from other soul food restaurants. Expect fatty oxtails in sweet brown gravy, smothered chicken in roux brown gravy, warm squares of cornbread, and deep-fried deviled eggs — a dish that Johnson says was inspired by a similar offering served at Old Lady Gang in Atlanta. On the weekends, indulge in classics like chicken and waffles topped with grape-flavored butter, or shrimp and grits. All fried chicken on the menu is brined for 24 hours. To drink, try the spot’s sweet tea, Kool-Aid, or a cocktail made with Uncle Nearest Whiskey — a Black and woman-owned whiskey brand based in Shelbyville, Tennessee." - Serena Maria Daniels

What a place!!! Nice atmosphere and decor! I don't think it had been a full 10 minutes of wait time after ordering food that our food was brought out. Even though the turnaround was short, every single morsel was impeccable! The taste of the mac and cheese was the best, the fried fish was tender, the fried chicken was flavored delightfully. I haven't had Kool aid since my undergrad college years and it was brought out in the biggest mason jar that I've probably ever seen and wasn't overly sweet. Topped it off with the banana pudding which had a light and fluffy taste.

I've had a lot of soul food since moving to town and most of it I would classify as "okay." I'm not an expert, but I understand the basics. Fixins was another another level, however. Generous portions and everything was packed with flavor. I easily had enough to take home for a second meal. We didn't have a reservation, but we were accommodated rather quickly (I'm under the impression that reservations are preferred). Service was quick and friendly. The fried green tomatoes appetizer was the standout! My fried chicken was excellent too. Seasoning was on point and the chicken was juicy. My only nitpick was the space is a bit loud. Blasting music isn't really necessary when the acoustics don't dampen the noise at all.

Decided to give this place a try. The service was good. I didn’t care for the fish or cornbread balls. It does not taste like catfish due to the texture or it may have just been under fried. Texture was a bit mushy. Wife had the smothered pork chops and they were fire. Fried green tomatoes were good and the sauce was amazing. Drinks were very good and our waiter was very good. Atmosphere was nice.

Google
Delicious!!!! Very packed as expected, but wait time was reasonable and worth the food. I loved that most of the cocktails had infused ice cubes- very neat. As a girl born and raised in the south, I appreciate true soul food. Service was warm & attentive. I especially enjoyed all of the artwork paying homage to several famous black artists of several industries. Would def return.

Google
I took my Mother here for her birthday along with my Wife and Brother. I must say that the entire experience was INCREDIBLE! Great staff who made themselves available to us with positive energy, excellent food! No one at the table was disappointed by what they received! The flavor was on target, from the appetizers to our entrees! The visit was made even greater by the presence of the Owner, Mr. Kevin Johnson (KJ) who I truly loved watching as an NBA great from his first year with my hometown Cavaliers to his time spent with the Phoenix Suns! He is truly invested in the service industry and greets the customers with humility and gratitude! I'd recommend FIXINS to everyone who lives in and/or visits the great city of Detroit!

My recent visit to Fixins in Detroit left me with mixed feelings. While the food itself was undeniably great, certain aspects of the experience, particularly the service, unfortunately detracted from our overall enjoyment. The flavors coming out of the kitchen at Fixins were truly impressive. Each dish we ordered was well-executed and flavorful. However, our party was seated in the lounge area rather than the main dining room, which immediately felt less immersive and a bit removed from the restaurant's vibrant atmosphere. More significantly, the service we received was subpar. Our server seemed inattentive, and we often felt ignored. Simple requests took longer than expected, and it was difficult to get their attention when needed. The most glaring issues were that a fried green tomato appetizer never arrived, and an order of gumbo for one of our guests did not arrive with the rest of our meals. We waited patiently, assuming it was just a slight delay, but after a considerable amount of time, we had to flag down another waitress to inquire about it. The gumbo finally arrived approximately 15 minutes later. To their credit, the late gumbo was removed from our bill, which was an appropriate gesture. However, the delay and the feeling of being overlooked definitely soured our experience, especially for our friends who were visiting from out of town. What should have been a showcase of Detroit's culinary scene was unfortunately marred by the inconsistent service. While I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Fixins based on the quality and taste of their food alone, potential diners should be aware that their seating location and the attentiveness of the service might vary. Hopefully, the restaurant can address these inconsistencies to ensure a more uniformly positive experience for all guests.

Google
This restaurant has become one of my favorites! After my first visit, the food was absolutely delicious and customer service was absolutely great! I ended up telling my family about it, and a few weeks after I took my parents and siblings for a visit and they loved it as well. On our second visit it was yet again great customer service and amazing food!

Google
The combination of delicious food, excellent service, and a warm atmosphere made it a great dining experience! The oxtails were perfectly cooked and I finally found a soul food restaurant where I actually like the macaroni and cheese. I’ll definitely be back often!

Yelp
Very cool spot! I went with a friend of mine who was in town. She had been to the Los Angeles location and couldn't stop raving about it! I had the 2-piece fried chicken (breast and wing), with macaroni & cheese, and collard greens for sides. I could taste a hint of vinegar in the greens that was off putting for me. They were too tart. The mac & cheese was good. The chicken wasn't really hot. You know Black people we are picky, v v v v v picky! My friend got the catfish and I tasted some of hers. It was absolutely delicious and piping hot! That's when I knew I should've got the catfish! I would come back for the catfish! Our server was absolutely amazing! She is a flight attendant and I could tell by the way she took exceptional care of us! We sat at the bar, and she was a delight! I ordered the drink that changes colors, I think it's called the PYT! It was delish! a girl drink, a pretty young thing for a pretty young thing! The place had a lounge in the back, plus a banquet area; moreover, the restaurant is huge! I love the decor and ambience. I will be back for the catfishhhhhh! Period!

Yelp
I had a great experience at Fixins! The food was absolutely delicious. I ordered the smothered chicken with mac and cheese and greens, and everything was seasoned perfectly. My guest had the fish with red beans and rice and mac and cheese, and they really enjoyed their meal as well. We also tried a few drinks--the Black Wall Street Old Fashioned, Spiked Adult Kool-Aid, and the Blue Raspberry Margarita. While they were okay, they weren't worth the $18 price tag for such a small glass. The restaurant has a great atmosphere and plenty of space, making it a perfect spot for large parties. While the prices are a bit high, I'd still go back for the food and the overall experience!

Yelp
Had to check it out as it has been the talk of the town. So here's what went well: Customer service-polite from the time we entered until we left Ambiance-spacious, bright and clean Food- overall pretty good. I had the hit chicken sandwich which was very tasty. The biscuits were a little dry but tasty Not so well: The fried green tomatoes were greasy. The Cole slaw had a strong ,pungent vinegar taste My drink was a tequila drink with butterfly pea. It was a bit too sweet. Banana pudding to go came ins super small container. I haven't tried it yet so can't comment on it. Prices seemed a tad high for what you are getting but I enjoyed the experience. Would go back

Yelp
In town for a winter vacation and my nephew chose this place (thank you TikTok). The menu was full of every comfort soul food known to man. I couldn't decide so, I got a few apps and created a flight of sides. Whether you are a picky eater, on a diet or not, there is something on the menu to satisfy you. For my beverage I of course ordered the koolaid... red. Why red? Because no other flavors matter. And requested lemon slices, squeeze one in and let the other float. It's the only way to enjoy koolaid. The serving size was sizable, it was perfectly sweetened & i was kind enough to share with Ok.. let's start with the food. Thr fries are like no other. It's like they were seasoned, breaded & fried. Crispy.. amazing. I asked if they were sprinkled with a lil crack. Beyond delish. Words cannot describe. The collard greens were better than my grandmothers and her were THE best. They were so good, I ordered a second helping. The pot liquor (juice from the greens) was so soul healing... IFYKYK... I wish they offered that as something you could drink. The Mac n cheese.. the potato salad.. the black eyed peas... all were **chef's kiss**. I think the charred okra had potential but my batch wasn't the best. (I did still eat them). My suggestion is to quick blanche in a veg broth with butter, char and then lightly sea salt, garlic powder & onion powder. Trust me. I ordered the side salad. Listen... basic salad. It was most literally a basic salad but.. it wasn't. It was magnificent. Romaine, red onion, cherry tomatoes, croutons (they were homemade herbed cornbread croutons). I got the dill ranch to which I learned it's made in house. Listen, that was the best salad I have ever had in my life. There's nothing you can say that wouldn't convince me those vegetables were not grown in some greenhouse in the back & was not handpicked by angels. Not one unripe, shriveled or non crunchy vegetable was in there. Everything perfect & crisp. (And this is coming from someone who ONLY buys from small farms) It was so fresh that I ordered a large one to go. Ok rewind...the apps, the fried deviled eggs were perfection. Per my nephew, "the bacon is what took it there". The fish nuggets... I don't even know what kind of fish that was. Tender... and the cornmeal batter they were fried in. **praise him** . I didn't get to try the fried green tomatoes but it's on the list for next time. My nephews both ordered fried chicken (you get to pick your pieces!) Both said the chicken was juicy, well seasoned and liked the crunch. I didn't order an entree that day because I wanted a tapas experience so I was good with apps & sides. (All of which I shared... I'm the nice rich bougie auntie) No dessert was ordered only because I forgot and whyyyyy did I forget? The service. No really.. service was five star. From the moment we entered. I like that there was seating for us to wait and we were texted when our table was ready. We got water while we waited. The host, hostesses & manager were very friendly. The restaurant was fully staffed & functioned like a well oiled machine, The vibe is very good. Im not sure who did the hiring but good job. They turn over tables with swiftness. The service was impeccable. I say this as a business traveler who dines a lot. And if our waiter had other tables, I didn't notice. We were catered to. He was so attentive but not so much so that we weren't given time to eat & felt bombarded. He shared what he enjoyed from the menu (I asked him). He checked in to ensure we were enjoying our meal. He gave great eye contact. He was personable... funny.. professional.. appropriate. Had he said "my pleasure" vs thank you I would have thought he retired from chikfilA! I was very impressed. He even agreed to a pic. Given, how much I feel we were spoiled... and I am I'm certain the other waitstaff are equally as spectacular but, I'm going to stick with Joshua and only Joshua when I come. I mean... I like what I like **shrugs** and once you feel like a VIP, you don't chance it with others. Now, would I recommend this place... absolutely. But empty belly only and be prepared to order more to take home. What should you order?... the whole menu x2. Will I be back?... Mapping my next trip back in my head as I type.

Yelp
My first experience here was not the one I desired. Despite a reservation being made, my party and I waited an hour beyond that time for seating. We barely had time to order and receive our food before we had to leave to attend an event at the Opera House. We didn't have an opportunity to eat anything and packed it to go. The manager on duty was not apologetic in the slightest. It was what it was at that point. Understandably he may have been hearing the complaint repeatedly and it was this understanding along with the impeccable service received from the server with our food. That won me over and I decided I would come back. My order was Oxtails with Mac & Cheese, Greens, Red Kool-Aid and Peach Cobbler. Second visit: Was seated in a timely manner. Service was consistent as with my first visit. I was able to admire the Motown themed decor all around this visit as it was not crowded. I ordered the Deviled Eggs as a starter, the Fish with Greens and Mac & Cheese with Red Kool-Aid. The manager on staff at this time walked the restaurant, greeted guests and asked of their experience. A drastic change from what I had experienced prior. I was relieved to have better overall experience and made plans with friends to return again in a few days. Third time: I returned with my friends from the initial visit as we had another play we were seeing. We made the reservation an hour earlier to ensure we did not have to rush again. Our wait time for a table was limited. Service and food; consistently impeccable. My order this time was Fried Chicken with Mac & Cheese and Greens, Red Kool-Aid. I ordered Red Velvet cake to take home for dessert. Fourth check-in: I brought my mom and aunt in to try their food. Service and food. Was on point and solidified me as a regular patron of Fixins.

Yelp
Food 3/5 The fried chicken was crispy and seasoned well. As for sides and appetizers, the fried green tomato's were just okay, the mac-n-cheese was okay, and I enjoyed the collards; collards had a faint sweet flavors flavoring. Oh, ad the cornbread muffin was good. Service 4/5 We sat at the bar and popped in the sample some of the chicken with sides. The service was nice. Ambiance 5/5The interior is decorated beautifully with art of Detroit icons and other vibrant paintings. Overall, I will return to try additional items from the menu.

Yelp
Fixins is absolutely fabulous! I'm new to soul food, but after dining here, I overheard other guests saying it's the best soul food they've ever had--and I believe it! The restaurant has a clean, modern aesthetic that celebrates African American excellence, which is beautifully reflected in everything from the decor to the food. Their motto is creating an inclusive, welcoming environment that honors the history and traditions of African American cuisine, and they deliver on every level. The menu features soul food classics inspired by Grandma's recipes, and everything is done to absolute perfection. From the first bite to the last, they put care into every dish. The portions are incredibly generous, so come hungry! The service is phenomenal, too. The staff exudes warmth, humor, and genuine care, making you feel right at home. These are people who truly love sharing their food and creating unforgettable experiences for their guests. Fixins isn't just a meal--it's a celebration of culture, history, and community. I've now been back three times and love introducing my out of town guests to Fixins.

Yelp
Sent for a visit with my mom for our birthday. Our waitress was so sweet she provided great suggestions. We enjoyed the food and ambiance.

Yelp
Doris approved! Went for lunch (carry out). I walked but parking is street or garage. Z lot or the opera house parking. Maybe best bet. Street is limited. Was greeted with a smile, ordered: The deep-fried deviled eggs, fish sandwich with rice and beans. Everything was hot was delicious. The fish sandwich had a big Mac type sauce to it. Pickles were crunchy, bread had the right amount of butter. Fish tasted great. Rice and beans was the first thing I ate perfect combo I loved it! Good proportion for a side. The deep fried deviled eggs were really nice still hot crunchy. Everything was really good. Also, I talked to the manager a couple days later he was outside throwing salt. Everything is freshly brought in. Prep starts at 7 AM. Super impressive. I sat at the bar but the vibe was welcoming and super cool. I wasn't offered a water or asked if I wanted anything to drink why I waited but my food came out pretty quick. I encourage you to try! Food was outstanding.

Yelp
This place is special. Super busy, the views in the restaurant are beautiful. Art and magazine covers of icons. You cannot beat it. Soul food and kool aid. When's the last time you had some kool aid? Especially from somewhere that wasn't home. The chicken here is cooked to perfection. Nice and crispy chicken. Maybe a bit salty but it is good. Red beans and rice seasoned perfectly. Very good. The biscuit comes with this butter that's so sweet and smooth you might want another one. I tried the corn bread as well. The cornbread was sweet and good. The Mac & cheese blew me away, I saved this for last because every soul food place gotta have some banging Mac. If it doesn't what are you doing? Waitresses can be a lil bit nicer but I'm not complaining. I talked to other people and they love it. Four locations Sacramento, LA, Tulsa & now Detroit. Fixins is where it's supposed to be! I'll be back to try the gumbo for sure! Very busy place right now. Rather you have reservations or not. There seems to always be a wait.
google avatar

Yelp
This time I had the cat fish nuggets, collard greens, and macaroni and cheese. Its Saturday night and the wait was not long. Once again, the staff was amazing and food. The environment is amazing music.

Yelp
I had heard mixed reviews from friends about this place but decided to find out for myself....I should have trusted my friends. The food was just okay: it looks nice and nothing going to make you sick but there was something not right about everything. I started with the fried green tomatoes. If you could have seen these paper thin tomato slices in real life! For whatever they're charging, can I at least have a whole tomato? Felt like it was half a tomato cut in 4 slivers. And then the cornmeal was so hard and had no seasonings on it. So flavor, texture, and portion all wrong for that price point. I think they are better when it's sliced thicker with a seasoned breadcrumb and fried softer so the breading isn't rock hard. Got the fried chicken with Mac and cheese and grilled okra. Idk what happened with that okra, but it's like the oil they used burnt on it, so it just tasted like motor oil. Again, no seasonings, not even salt. Mac & Cheese was overcooked but at least the flavor was right. Fried chicken was super dry. They say they marinate it for 24 hrs but in what? And not seasoned probably either. The drinks were ok and the service was fine (I sat at the bar). Ambience okay but I'd rather the food and prices be more commiserate than a colorful dining room.

Yelp
Came here for the first time with my sister. There was a bit of a wait time and the place was busy. We decided to seat at the bar. Our server was knowledgeable and personable. We ordered drinks and they were cute with Detroit themes. The vibes are there. Spacious and colorful with cute artwork. We ordered the yams, chicken, potato salad, mac and cheese and collard greens and they did not disappoint. I will be back

Yelp
I loved this restaurant. Great service especially if you go earlier in the day. I liked that it was spacious and they also had a lounge connected. The food came out fresh. I ordered the smothered chicken , macaroni and greens. The only thing is the parking, hard to find parking unless you pay $20.

Yelp
After much anticipation and excitement about the opening of the Detroit location of the restaurant: my family and I made reservations to check Fixins out, and we were not disappointed! I had heard about and read so many reviews about the restaurant, so I was super excited to check it out! I had reservations for 6 people, and we were seated in a reasonable timeframe. There was consideration for the wait time, as I went on a Friday evening, and there was a Usher concert and Tigers game that night, so the wait for food was a bit slower, but understood. Everyone enjoyed their food, and the waitress that served us was very nice and professional! I also enjoyed the ambiance and decor of the restaurant. The portions of the food was plentiful, and everyone at my table had food to go. I actually plan to return tomorrow to the restaurant try more options on the menu, so I will update my review to reflect my thoughts. But overall, the food was good! And I look forward to dining at the restaurant again!

Yelp
Fixins was founded by former NBA All-Star, Kevin Johnson. The first two locations are in LA and Sacramento. Their third location in Detroit just opened a few weeks ago. We went to dinner with the hubby's family. It was the six of us total. We got there around 7:15pm and was quoted a 45 minute wait. We were ok with that as they had a waiting area outside with tables and chairs. We got seated around 7:55pm. The majority of the table got the Oxtails in brown gravy with rice that came with one side $29. I got my oxtail with collard greens. I got an extra side of candied yams $6. My drink of choice was sweet tea $5. My hubby got the 3 piece fried chicken breast & 2 waffles $21 (plus an extra $2 if you get all breasts). He also got the Deep Fried Deviled Eggs as an appetizer $12 and a jar of purple Kool-Aid $5. The majority of what we ordered was fantastic. The only item that was meh to me was the candied yams. It didn't have enough butter and sugar. The collard greens were on point and especially the oxtail. OMG! The oxtail was so good. It had a rich flavor and was so filling. I only ate half and took the rest to go for the next day. I also tried the fried chicken and purple Kool-Aid. It was also divine. I got the sweet tea this time, which was good, but next time I'm going with the Kool-Aid. It comes in three flavors by the way: red, blue and purple. You can even have them mix it. I will most definitely return the next time I'm in Detroit. They don't have free parking. There's a parking lot across the street that valets for $15.

Yelp
Came for a birthday brunch and had a wonderful time. The service was friendly and professional. There were 8 in our party and we ordered a bit of everything. My friends ordered fried chicken, ox tails, and chicken & waffles. Top Side Recommendations: - Greens - Mac & cheese - Yams My order: I had the fish, Mac & cheese, greens and added a side of yams. Everything came out hot except my yams but it was still good. The fish was hot and the batter was delicious. My biggest CON is the fish was SWAI fish not catfish as I would have expected. Swai is literally the cheapest quality fish and is farmed in poor conditions so I feel that they use it because it can give a better margin- even though the dish is one of the more pricey ones ($24). However, it tasted great but I wouldn't reorder it for that reason alone. Our orders didn't all come out at once and the waitress was nice enough to offer a free peach cobbler desert for the birthday girl. One other thing that I didn't like was that you o my get 90 minutes and after that you are asked to leave. I get it but I didn't like that part. Overall it was great experience and the food was delicious. I would definitely recommend it.

Yelp
In Detroit for the free press marathon, and we stopped here because my girlfriend wanted to! I was a pain in the butt because my diet is so ridiculous and got a salad with grilled chicken. I know, I know. :) However our server Johnny was fantastic!! He was accommodating, and didn't think I was a nutcase :) My friend however got the fried chicken and she said it was absolutely fantastic. Said the collard greens were outstanding, and then Mac and cheese was the perfect balance of cheese and pasta. The drink menu looked stellar and if it wasn't race weekend would've LOVED to participate! Cocktail list looked so good :) Atmosphere was so much fun, really great neighborhood, and very close to our hotel! Five stars!

Yelp
This place just opened in the Detroit area (about a monthish old at the time of this post) with 3 other locations around Cali and Tulsa. I was in town and was excited to see this and made a reservation. Highly recommend this because it is super busy and their phone line even tells you they are taking reservations as priority. We got there a little late but they still honored our reservation and I'm so glad they did. We were greeted by the nicest server in good time. The menu is a one pager with lots of good soul food options. I didn't go in with high expectations as I've been burned on soul food outside of the South but I was wrong. Everything came out hot and fresh and delicious. I for sure recommend the fish bites as an app. My hubs does not eat tartar but tore it up. The chicken could have used a little more seasoning but still crunchy and yummy. The waffle and Mac was also top tier. Lots of black musical history icons for decor and other black history moments and a good vibe. Highly recommend this place.

Yelp
FIXINS didn't disappoint but a few tweaks would to me make for a more enjoyable overall experience. The music was loud, thus everyone was talking loud and therefore it was just tooo loud overall. The batter for the chicken pieces, tenders, sndwich was a bit too thick. We had to send a chkn sandwich back for being fried too hard. Which to me the batter was thick thus the meat fried hard to cook all the batter. The batter was dark brown when it came to the table. The black eye peas were a touch salty and fried deviled eggs and pork chops didn't taste seasoned. NOW BABY!! Let me tell you what I LOVED! We walked in and it was packed at the door. However, we were sat at our reservation time. Second, waitress was very nice and helpful. Third the fried green tomatoes and fish bites ohhhhh imma run them back my next visit!!! Seasoned and delicious! The koolaid was a hit! Large glass for the price and delicious! The fried fish, fried chicken wing, yams, Mac, fries, coleslaw and cornbread were all tasty! I could order a plate of sides...they should add a side plate to the menu!! The finale of peach cobbler and red velvet was BOMB! Favorite was the cobbler and it was a la mode!! Loved the decor, open concept and playlist (just turn it down a few notches)!! As I stated above, we definitely will return...I wanna try the gumbo and shrimp n grits next!

Yelp
Love the vibe of this restaurant. From the moment we walked in we were greeted with a warm welcoming. The ambience felt like an upscale diner and bar mix, but with an edge. The decor was eye catching and the seating areas were clean. Our waiter Neilson was very pleasant and patient with us. He was very attentive to us and made sure we enjoyed ourselves. The food: we ordered the oxtails, fried chicken, mac and cheese, greens, and yams. Sweet Tea: this was very refreshing 9/10 Kool Aid: the blue one OMG, yes, yes, and yes 10/10 Oxtails: flavorful and not overpowering. The rice and gravy were ok because the gravy was watery. The rice was like jasmine could have been a little thicker texture. I think they should serve this with mashed potatoes instead 7.5/10 Fried chicken: the crispness was there but the batter was still wet underneath. Chicken was chewy and lacked flavor. 4/10 Mac & Cheese: I don't know whose recipe this is but this ain't it. It had a weird after taste. As far as the texture of the noodles and cheese it was perfect. 5/10 Greens: this was probably the best we have had in a while. This had lots of flavor and was a hit with us. 8.5/10 Yams: this ain't it either. The yams were a little hard and lacked flavor. Yes, you could see all the nutmeg and cinnamon but that was all. 4/10 They need to go back and revamp the sides and figure out the chicken batter ratio. If they do then it's on!!! We are willing to give them another try because we liked the service so much and that means a lot these days!!!

Yelp
Simple.... Good food done right. They take customer service very seriously! Danny was our service and was amazing. I loved the ambiance, especially the artwork. They said they will be opening a lounge as well and the decor was well done. Must try.

Yelp
My favorite part was the decor and ambience - I loved the Motown posters and music playing in the background. The waiters were friendly and helpful. I also loved the fried chicken, mac & cheese and Lavendar Lemon Drop martini.

Yelp
I will definitely be coming back! The food was so amazing and the atmosphere was nice too! They had TVs on so we could watch the game and it was a very nice looking place. The service was good as well. The Fries were super crispy and had a really different delicious taste to them. The only thing that wasn't my favorite was the yams but that could just be my preferences. The sweet tea was watered down but they gladly replaced for a different drink. The cornbread muffin was a delicious sweet surprise. this chicken and fish were very crispy and perfectly cooked.

Yelp
10 stars, wife and I ate here yesterday and we loved it. Fried chicken was great, fries were great, Mac and cheese was awesome. Whatever the sauce was I put on my biscuit was delicious. Drinks were good too. Waitress was friendly. No complaints and we'll be going back.

Yelp
There's a reason this place stays active and packed, because it's definitely worth the hype. Me and my friend showed up without a reservation, and luckily two people were leaving the bar area, which is where we sat. The menu is a well-rounded assortment of all the soul food classics. I ordered the fried fish plate with a sweet tea, and without wasting any time, I can say that you get your dollars worth! The tea is huge, and the portion size of the entree is actually ideal; not so much that you get worn out, but too little that you feel that it wasn't enough. Perfectly balanced. The bartender-server was on point, and as a bonus, the patrons are nice too. We had a few side convos with other customers while there, and the overall vibe of the place is great. My only regret is that I didn't get dessert, but next time. My recommendation is to either come extremely early, at opening, before it gets really busy, or slightly after peak dinner hours (8:30p-9p). The restaurant decor is nice, spacious, and has a great element all around. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I had heard the food was good here and everyone was so right. I stopped in around 3 pm and sat at the bar. The bartender wasn't the friendliest but I had a friend with me. I got the 2 piece fried chicken and 2 sides (collard greens and mac n cheese). My friend got the same but with red beans and rice instead of the mac n cheese. I throughly enjoyed everything, the collard greens tasted like somebody grandma made them, they did have a kick so they were a little spicy. My friend doesn't like anything spicy and felt that the collards and red beans were too spicy for her. The house margarita was strong!!!

Yelp
We went here for a family lunch on MLK Day. Reservations strongly recommended! The ambiance was amazing, the restaurant showcased lot of history facts and informative art facts. The food was a 9/10.

Yelp
Loved the restaurant! But the service was phenomenal and as a restaurant owner myself this speaks volumes Kieara was our server and she explained everything the way I needed lol everything she described was exactly how it came and Toia and Jaron even stepped in to make sure we were okay! Team work made this dream work Thanks y'all we'll be back I only have pic of the koolaid because my family tore this food down

Yelp
This place is so very nice on the inside and very modern. The drinks that I saw go by were so pretty the food was looking so delicious that I couldn't wait to order. I was kind of torn on what to get but settled on smothered pork chops. I was so glad that I did because they were worth it so delicious and seasoned to perfection. My daughter got the oxtails which of course oxtails are costly but you got quite a bit of oxtails. The waiter informed us that you get an entire tail that's cut up and which it was pretty tasty. The mac and cheese was delicious even though I'm not a big mac and cheese lover but theirs was really delicious the greens and yams were pretty good too and also I did get the Black Eyed Peas which were delicious. A friend of mine got the catfish but I didn't get a picture of it because she has started eating right away. She really enjoyed her catfish but I was surprised to see that you only got one piece of catfish for like $23-24. I think that she should at least got two catfish fillets but anyway she enjoyed it. Out of all three I think mine was the best because it was really seasoned to perfection but all was good. The only thing that I wasn't real crazy about we got the banana pudding to go and it kind of didn't taste like a scratch banana pudding to me and it was $11 just for a cup. Know that this place is sort of pricey for soulful but it's good to know that at least you're going to get what you pay for. I would return to this place because the atmosphere is nice the customer service was great and the food was pretty good as well.

Yelp
I finally made it to Fixins, and I was not disappointed. The fried chicken was seasoned well and the service was good. The prices were good and you receive a nice amount of food for the price. I can not wait to go back and try the catfish. I almost forgot to mention the music selection was definitely a vibe.

Yelp
Appreciated that there is some street parking. That's becoming a challenge for restaurants. This was a going away meal for a friend leaving for missionary work. We wanted a comfortable happy vibe where we were not going to be rushed. WE were not disappointed. From the initial welcome and willingness to find comfortable seating to our 5Star rated (Way person) Joshua it was great. Being Transparent, we were like (ok- our Waiter is a Blond non black man) We tested him with pronunciation of collard greens and his honest suggestions of what he thought would be sides to honor our course selections. Was spot on. The food was great. Beverages in literally qt Mason jars Yesssssss (the Arnold Palmer was crafted well. The food. Soooo good started with Fried green tomatoes texture and taste excellent. I had the chicken/ greens/ red beans and rice. Tasty and correct Crispy(Ness) serving size was excellent. Bottom line GO with an empty stomach and be prepared to still bring some home. Oh and the Welcoming Ladies gave a warm so'long and took several photos of us.

Yelp
"Be sure to not make your reservation at the location is CALIFORNIA, like I did" Fixins was quite the delightful experience, the food was great, but soul food I feel is a difficult restaurant choice because everyone has their own taste in what they want in any specific soul food dish. With that being said, the apps were amazing, the entrees were quite tasty, I could make a few things better but overall, great! The service was phenomenal and the kool aid was even better, but again, to avoid waiting an hour and 20 mins like my friends and I, please be sure to make your reservation at the correct location in Detroit and not California because they're BUSY. We even got to see the NBA player who owns the place! Give it a go guys, great decor and atmosphere!

Yelp
We visited Fixins for the first time today. Service was excellent and the food came within 5 minutes from making the meal order. Very please. Will be coming back.

Yelp
Reservations are recommended because this place is still real popular. We didn't have a reservation so waited until a seat opened at the bar, which only took about 20 mins. I ordered the fried fish with Mac and cheese. Both were very tasty, though the fish was more salty for my taste. My friend ordered the okra and peach cobbler for dessert. She enjoyed both. The crowd was friendly and conversations about the music and decor at the restaurant were entertaining. The bar staff was very attentive and made our experience great!

Yelp
I got to enjoy Fixins with my father. He told me it was good so we went for lunch. Please don't they do not do TAKEOUT you must dine in then you may order takeout. The restaurant looks beautiful it gives you a nice Ambiance. The food was good I recommend the Chicken was good. I wish it was a little hotter but it came out fast. I don't think we waited more than 10 for our food. I got the Kool aid and its was as big as my head. I do plan on coming back they just open up and would like to try their other stuff.

Yelp
Loved the ambiance. The art and books on the wall are very on brand and black centered. The food overall was delicious. Wasn't a fan of the fried chicken. Just didn't have enough flavor. Started with fried deviled eggs and fried green tomatoes. Both were DELICIOUS and unique. Would order both again. We also created our own sample platter because we just couldn't decide lol we ordered the fried chicken 3 piece w/ Mac and yams, the oxtails with greens and the shrimp and grits. Wow was the shrimp and grits tasty. Full of flavor and was layered with flavor. The greens were well seasoned and the same with the yams. The mac was creamy and had lots of flavor. We had plenty to take home with us for leftovers. The oxtails had a good flavor but could have been cooked longer. Was falling off the bone but the meat itself was a little tough in places. Our server was attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. Her food and drink recommendations were appreciated.

Yelp
I love this place and can't wait to come back. My 1st time experience was great. I highly recommend making a reservation on open table otherwise the wait will be long. Just as my table was finished eating, another party that came in at the same time as my group were finally sitting down. The waiting area is very comfy if you do have to wait. They had my table ready earlier than the reserved time so that was great. I had the nicest greeting upon entering, the waitstaff were really kind, communicated very well, management walked around each table to ensure we had a superior experience. Our food came out in a timely manner and it definitely lived up to the hype. I had the shrimp and grits and it was excellent. It had a tiny kick but I wouldn't quite call it spicy. I loved everything about this dish. You will get full because the portion size is huge! Everyone at my table enjoyed their food and left very stuffed. One person had been here just the day before, so for her to come back the next day speak volumes considering it's only been open for 3 days now. The decor is very nice and the place is very very spacious. It's wheelchair friendly with plenty of room to move around without bumping into people. The tables are very long so there's plenty of space to seat large parties in a booth or at a table. Since they just opened this weekend the brunch menu was not available but it's coming soon. The waitress said they will open a more intimate, quieter lounge next door. Also, they will have a space upstairs that'll they rent out soon as well. My only negatives were that the food runners seem confused on what table to bring the food and drinks to. I'm pretty sure they'll smooth that out after they've settled in. The music is LOUD! I had to shout to speak to people at my table. I'd appreciate if they can turn it down a tad bit. They did have a DJ onsite to spend some tunes for an upbeat environment. Get here sooner than soon! You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Great Ambiance. The music gives that cool vibe, to perfectly pair with the Detroit themed decor throughout. I definitely love the decor as a true Detroiter they hit some legendary pics. Koolaid and Faygo themes along with sports and Entertainment. Now the food had its highs and lows. Fried green Tomatoes and Caesar salad with those cornbread croutons 10/10 highly recommend. The sides were Mid to ok the Chicken was a little heavily breaded for my liking. The Old Fashion was syrupy definitely could use some work there. The pricing is very respectable for Downtown as well. If you plan to go definitely make reservations cause the walk ins is limited as it's always slappin. I would keep this on my shortlist to sit at the bar and watch a game for Sure. Also would recommend you try it for yourself.

Yelp
We arrived for our 9 o'clock reservation a little early, hoping that we would be seated when we arrived. That didn't happen. We were seated a few minutes after our reservation time. Taylor was our server. She was nice, but... she overcharged us. She charged us for three drinks when we only had two. Other than that, fantastic. We ordered fried chicken with greens and yams. We also had the most amazing artichoke dip we've ever eaten. The restaurant was crowded, and very noisy. They needed more space.

Yelp
Just ate at this fantastic soul food restaurant in Downtown Detroit for the first time! Our server Josh came to our table only a couple of minutes after we sat down. We (there were four of us) had a few questions about the menu. Josh was very knowledgeable and helpful in answering all of our questions. They served Kool-Aide!!!! We ordered two appetizers: deep-fried deviled eggs with bacon and fried green tomatoes both came out quickly. I'm not a big fan of the latter, but the deviled eggs were fried in a very light breading - with just the right thickness and crunch. Could have had a little more bacon on it, though. Regardless, they were pretty tasty - with some hot sauce. My main course: gumbo with shrimp. Yes, you had to pay extra for shrimp. The roux was just the right consistency for me - almost thick enough (but not quite) to eat with a fork. It was rich and flavorful, and authentic (I've been to Nola more than a few times). The portion size was very decent. Side dishes, we ordered: candied yams, collard greens, macaroni and cheese and black eyed peas. All of the sides were delicious, but the yams stood out to me because they were just the right consistency - not too mushy. The yams were also appropriately sweet and buttery. Honorable mention goes to the macaroni: the cheese was very "cheesy" with just the right amount of sharp and twangy-funk. All of the main courses and side dishes came out surprisingly quickly. Server Josh was a joy, and he kept our Mason glasses topped off with a smile. The place was busy. Everyone seemed to be enjoying their early Sunday afternoon meal. There was even a small bar section with some televisions. I bet the place gets going on a Saturday night. Soul food is good for the soul!!!!

Yelp
I am in LOVE. This is my new go to for soul food. The food was fresh, hot, a seasoned but not salty. We ordered a variety of things to really try out the menu and it was good. The drinks were also good. The chicken is juicy, oxtails fall of the bone, deviled eggs are delish, yams, greens and Mac good. Also tried peach cobbler and Red velvet cake. Staff is new so they are still working out some kinks but everyone was friendly and efficient. The owner was there too getting everyone before we went it. I will def be back often.

Yelp
Fixins serves up some solid soul food. I like the fact that they take reservations but parking around the restaurant will cost $20 unless you can luck up and find parking on the street. Party of 4 and we all devoured our food. Our server was very attentive and friendly. The restaurant it's self is very spacious and well decorated. The fried chicken is a solid 9/10. Chicken and waffles according to my kids were 10/10. Greens 10/10. Mac 8/10. Prices are reasonable all for except the catfish dinner. In my opinion for the price of $24 I would expect 2 filets of fish, but nope it's one. This is not specified on the menu, I believe it just reads "fried fish dinner" it doesn't specify what type of fish or quantity, but when it arrived it was clearly catfish. As mentioned for $24 and it being catfish it should include 2 filets. We will for sure be returning but just wouldn't order that again.

Yelp
It was my first time going here to participate in a. Birthday dinner and our waitress service was top tier! I ordered the gumbo as an appetizer and it was meat in every bite. I had the smothered pork chops with greens and black eyed peas for dinner and it was absolutely delicious. The prices are reasonable and the portions are generous!!

Yelp
We came to fixins on a Sunday afternoon after visiting the Motown museum. We didn't have a reservation and at 3pm they were packed. The main dining and bar area were mostly full. We found a table in the bar area; unfortunately, it was right next to the door and with the crowd the cold air was too much too stand so we asked to be seated in the dining area. We were told that we would be seated in the dining area but instead we were taken to a a back room ... felt like an overflow area. That was too tight and there was no music or any type of ambiance that made it feel like a welcoming atmosphere. There was a lot of noise with screams, crying, laughter, conversation echoing off the walls. The server took quite a while to come and bring us water. We placed our order and then I had to flag someone down to ask if they could at least turn on the music. The woman who I believe was the manager said oh the music should have been on. After turning it on it helped a little bit. I opted for the fried chicken with red beans and rice and collard greens. My partner got the shrimp and grits with a side piece of cornbread. The red beans and greens were outstanding, smaller portions than I expected but very flavorful. The fried chicken was perfectly fried, it lacked actual flavor but the fixins hot sauce helped. My partners shrimp and grits was different in that it was cooked in a gravy, it was quite flavorful. He loved it and the cornbread was also perfect. I thought overall the food was good but I was disappointed in the ambiance.

Yelp
Service - 5/5, happy, friendly, quick and courteous Ambiance - 4/5, lively but a little loud - great decor Food 4/5, best mac from a restaurant... ever. Fried chicken was a hit as well and greens were good too. Could've used a bigger cornbread muffin. Drinks - 4/5, pricy but tasty. Parking is nasty work though - $15 for a Thursday evening

Yelp
We love this! Second visit and so happy. Deep fried deviled eggs Fried green tomatoes Smothered fried chicken Fresh catfish The best candied yams and the Mac and Cheese is fantastic! Our waiter suggested the off menu Meg mix of lemonade with all three flavors kool aid and it's awesome! Thank you Meg!
