The Best Dishes Eater San Francisco Editors Ate Last Week | Eater SF

"I didn’t expect much from Fixins, Kevin Johnson’s Oak Park soul-food spot, but the two-piece fried chicken was genuinely excellent—juicy dark meat with a just-thick-enough, crackling batter—and the plate was well-matched with sweet candied yams and mac ’n’ cheese; the real sleeper hit for me was the Uptown Salad topped with chili-cheese Fritos, pure chaotic genius." - Lauren Saria

Had to check out the highly rated and reviewed Fixings Soul Kitchen in Sacramento, CA. We made a reservation so there wasn't a wait. I overheard that the wait time was 25 minutes not bad for a Saturday around lunch time. We ordered the deep fried eggs, Gumbo added shrimp, chicken and waffle, fried fish with corn fritters, charred okra (no bacon) and macaroni and cheese. The deep fried eggs were 1 out of 5. The filling was the only problem and what led to the dislike from everyone at the table The gumbo was also a miss. The dish was not gumbo. The roux tasted like and had the texture of gravy. The dish was chicken, sausage, and shrimp with gravy over rice. Tasted good but is not gumbo. As a gumbo rated a 1 out of 5. As meat served with gravy over rice rated a 4 out of 5. The chicken was fried and seasoned well. The waffle with grape butter had a great taste. The waffle was good solo as well as with the chicken. The fried fish was good and seasoned well. The charred okra was good minus the larger pieces that were too tough to chew entirely. The macaroni cheese wasn't cheesy but had a fairly good taste and was seasoned well. The corn fritters were okay not a lot of flavor but cooked well. The lemonade was super sweet. The place was packed and busy with good service. Not overly friendly but consistent. Would return and try some different food or menu items.

Google
We went there for a birthday dinner and loved our meals. Across 5 adults, we had fried chicken, smothered chicken, fried fish, and smothered pork chops. Fabulous sides/fixins.

Google
Absolutely loved this place!! The food, the ambiance and the service were A-1!! Those deep fried deviled eggs were so yummy! The prices were reasonable for the amount of food you get. Nice size portions. The wait staff were helpful and friendly. The oxtails were tender and flavorful. The greens were yummy as well. Can’t wait to go to this place again!!

Google
This place is awesome!! The food was absolutely delicious. They have this butter that's infused with grape jelly. Omg, it's so good. The service was exquisite. Kim was our Server, and she was absolutely fantastic!! We chose to sit outside because it was a beautiful day. Overall it was a pleasant dining experience.

Google
Had a nice chill morning brunch here this morning. Such a great vibe after a long festival weekend. Staff is chill and friendly. Place is very large with a lot of seating options. Very friendly atmosphere ended up making small talk with a few other diners which is a very rare experience nowadays.

Google
The food is absolutely delicious highly recommend coming if even so much as a tiny bit curious. Food is full of flavor and never disappoints me and my husband have come multiple times! Gumbo and oxtails are absolute favorites. Staff is very welcoming and nice service is fast!

Google
Soul food is a tricky thing to make in big batches, I was beyond surprised when I tasted the food it was perfect. I had a craving for fried chicken and red beans and rice. Went on a Sunday night they were blasting gospel music. It threw me off because I'm not used to that going into a restaurant. Although it is a pretty upscale restaurant. It had a comfort to it. I felt like I was at a family members house waiting for the food to be ready. Foods eaten included fried chicken, red beans and rice, candied yams, collard greens, mac and cheese, chicken and waffles, and red and blue Kool aid. Everything was perfectly seasoned and the Kool aid was perfect. Everything tasted like what my mom would make I will for sure be back so glad I tried this restaurant finally.

Yelp
Great food and service. The ox tails, chicken&waffles, and the gumbo were all winners on our two visits to this restaurant owned by former NBA star and former Sacramento mayor - he is also a local son - Kevin Johnson. Service was provided by Jae, a great dude reminiscent of a West Coast version of the Rock. Outdoor seating and indoor were both comfortable. KJ was having lunch on our second visit and Jae brought him over for a quick "hello". Jae then gave a big smile for a photo to top off a fun experience.

Yelp
ALICEA WAS THE BEST!!! Thank you so much for treating me well. Bartenders(ISABELLA&LUC) thank you too for treating me well/ perfectly. The food was amazing just like my grandma's southern cooking, I will be back!

Yelp
Was in a party of 12 and we got seated fast and our food within 15 minutes of getting there. ELIZA WAS WONDERFULLL. We will be coming back just for her!! So attentive and caring. She made the experience that much better. ;)

Yelp
Updating my previous review from a year ago. I dined in at Fixins Soul Kitchen on a weekday for lunch and I had a great experience and can't wait to return again soon! So first, my mom and I received amazing customer service! From the hostess to Aunt Pearl stopping by to say hello and then to our server, Kim. Everyone was welcoming and friendly! I had a sweet tea to drink and it was so good! We ordered two fried fish plates and everything was absolutely delicious! Hot and fresh and didn't take long to come out to our table. You also get large portion sizes and will likely have some to take home. Overall, I'm so happy to have supported this black owned restaurant again! I highly recommend if you're looking for soul food in Sacramento. Can't wait to bring more out of town family and friends to Fixins!

Yelp
Fixins Soul Kitchen brings the comfort, flavor, and energy you want in a true soul food experience. From the moment you walk in, the vibe is lively -- great music, friendly staff, and the smell of fried chicken and waffles in the air. The food? Outstanding. The fried chicken is perfectly crispy and juicy, the mac and cheese is creamy with that baked crust on top, and the collard greens hit that perfect balance of smoky and savory. The cornbread is a must -- slightly sweet, soft inside, and served warm. Portion sizes are generous, and everything tastes made from scratch. Service is upbeat and professional even when it's busy -- and it does get busy. The staff keeps the energy positive and makes sure everyone feels welcome. The décor gives off a modern twist on Southern comfort -- clean, bright, and full of character that reflects Oak Park's community spirit. It's the kind of place you come for good food but stay for the vibe. Whether it's brunch, dinner, or a casual weekend stop, Fixins delivers the flavor and warmth that makes soul food special.

Yelp
My first time trying Fixins and i had NO complaints! The food was nothing short of amazing! I ordered 'to-go' online and placing the order was a breeze! The food was ready when i arrived and although i had my food to go i did scope the inside and the ambiance was great it was beautiful inside! I ordered smothered chicken, yams, and mac and cheese! All was tasty! I do prefer my bones in my chicken for smothered chicken but now i know for the future to order accordingly.

Yelp
Came here for dinner w my husband on a Friday night around 6:30pm. We were seated right away and our waitress took our appetizer order shortly after. The restaurant is pretty spacious. We ordered fried green tomatoes, oxtail + Mac n cheese, and 2 piece fried chicken (thighs), + collard greens + candied yams. I can see why they call themselves fixins soul kitchen. Their fixins are rly good!! I personally think the ox tail was ok, but the fried chicken was yummy. I loved the biscuit and butter it came w. And I loved the fried green tomatoes. The food was suuuper heavy haha but if you're craving soul food, give this place a try!
google avatar

Yelp
Right in the heart of Oak Park southern style comfort food and made fresh! The Mac and cheese was flavorful and loaded with cheese. I also had the oxtails and the portions were generous. My only con was they were a tad bit sweet for my taste as I prefer a more savory and spicy kind of oxtails but overall not bad. We had a group of 6 or so and they can only seat you if half of the group is there. If you have to wait you can always snag a drink at the bar while waiting. I highly recommend making a reservation for the weekends because it is very busy and the wait for walking in can be long.

Yelp
I think this is a great staple for breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the Oak Park area. Been here a few times, but I would like to review my most recent breakfast experience. Overall, I've always enjoyed my experience here. The blue plate special was great. I always scramble my eggs, but I appreciated the handmade turkey sausage. The chicken and waffles was awesome. I appreciate that the chicken breast was not overcooked. It was juicy, while the skin was flaky and crispy. Bette than your standard Popeyes or KFC. I forgot to ask what type of butter they had on the waffle, but it was phenomenal. The service is great. I find that everyone is very friendly. It is also pretty quick if I may say. However, there can be a line for dinner and for brunch on Sundays so be prepared to wait. It has a pretty modern aesthetic inside. There's a modern meets rustic vibe going on. However, my favorite place is outside. I think they have a lovely patio. It is spacious, ample greenery, and heat lamps if you need it. Love that they always have sports on. For my hip-hop and R&B lovers, there is always a great playlist. Always. Have I had better southern food? Yes, which is why I can't give it the 5, but this place is worth revisiting and is very quality.

Yelp
The vibe of this place is so cute and the restaurant layout and decorations itself is very homey. I ordered the 2 piece chicken, I love that you can choose what part of the chicken you want. I got a side of Mac n cheese and fries. Overall the meal is very tasty, I think it might be a little salty for my preferences though. The biscuit with the sweet butter was a good way to offset the saltiness. Service was friendly and food came out quick

Yelp
I came to Fixin's on a Thursday evening around 5 PM, and my party of two got seated right away, great start. There's parking out front, but it's on a busy street strip, and the restaurant is tucked in with several other stores, which made it look smaller from the outside. However, once inside, it's surprisingly spacious with a bar area and outdoor seating as well. We ordered from the happy hour menu, the mac & cheese balls and beef sliders ($8 each), plus a side of French fries, their biscuits (which come with a strawberry or raspberry butter that's delicious), and the candied yams. The yams were buttery, soft, and flavorful, though they don't come with marshmallows on top, just a heads up if you're expecting that classic topping. The mac & cheese balls came with four pieces and a cheese sauce. They were really flavorful, bite-sized (about two bites each), and I only wish they were a bit bigger. The fries were seasoned perfectly, crispy on the outside and soft inside. The sliders were solid, simple and tasty, served with pickles on the side along with mustard and ketchup. Overall, I really enjoyed my visit. The food was a hit, the service was quick, and the vibe was great. I definitely plan on coming back to try more items!

Yelp
YUM! Excellent food and service. I had the chicken sandwich and friend had the hot chicken sandwich. The chicken sandwich was perfectly crisp and fresh and not overly heavy. The Kool Aid pickle was interesting. Their sweet tea was perfectly flavored (not too sweet). Would come back again to try their gumbo!
google avatar

Diane L.

Yelp
This was our 1st time eating here. The service was great, very quick. We started with an order of fried deviled eggs, she ordered the gumbo, I ordered oxtails with a side of collard greens, we shared a side of Mac-n-cheese. We washed it all down with Arnold Palmer's made with sweet tea. In total our order came up to $94.62 Next time we return we want to try their chicken and waffles. The chicken looked really good as we saw it coming out the kitchen. The owner had a beautiful collection of family photos and the story of their journey to Sacramento on the wall. Support Black business! Get to Fixins!!

Yelp
This restaurant is such a gem! I wish I would have ate at the restaurant but I was just prepared to grab my food and go to the hotel. The inside and outside seating is so cute. I'm thankful this food was delicious because I sure had one heck of a time getting my food...nothing that the restaurant did wrong. Since I'm not from the area I wasn't familiar with the location. When I saw on my GPS I was about 20 minutes out, I ordered my food. Well when I got there, parking was so hard to find and I had luggage in my car so I didn't want to risk not parking close and coming back to a smash and grab. So I decided to head to the hotel, check in, and come back. Well my work phone was set to "avoid highways" so it took me some ridiculous way that took forever. After checking in, I made my way back and got my food. I was greeted by an employee who just handed a to go order to someone else. I told him my name and order number and he got my bag. He even walked me to the door to open the door for me. I didn't catch his name but thank you! Customer service like that will keep people coming back! I couldn't wait to dig into my food although I knew it wasn't going to be hot. I was prepared to have to heat it up in the microwave but to my surprise it was still warm. I ordered the three piece chicken meal that comes with a biscuit: breast, thigh, leg and my sides were Mac and cheese and candied yams. I had two different kind of butters. The fried chicken had great flavor and was crispy, candied yams were delicious and Mac and cheese was good but not my favorite. The meal was a perfect ending to my chaotic Sunday!

Yelp
3.5 stars. Good music, decent food, and great service! Our server Alondra was attentive and friendly. She was there when we needed her but she wasn't a nuisance. We would come back for her service alone. We tried the fried deviled eggs and they were interesting. A great dipping sauce would send those over the top. Our entrees were the oxtails and gumbo. Oxtails were plentiful, and both tender and chewy. They came with blackeyed peas that stole the show. The gumbo came with the best corn bread muffin ever! I chose to add shrimp to the gumbo but it wasn't cooked with the dish so the gumbo didn't have that gumbo (filet), seafood flavor. It had a nice roux however and even contained okra. All food was plated nicely, arrived quickly, and was hot. For dessert we had red velvet cake and peach cobbler. The cobbler was the bomb the next day. Put it in the microwave and loved it. The cake was stale, and had a bit too much salt but the frosting tasted good. We took Mrs. Ruth's Plate to go. It consisted of 3 sides. We chose red beans & rice, macaroni & cheese, and yams. The sides were small but were pretty tasty! Overall we would give them another chance if in the area. .

Yelp
Make the effort to find a parking place, who cares how far you have to walk, just get yourselves NOW to Fixins. Their motto, "without soul, it's just food," is perfect, and so are the meals. The gumbo is spectacular, and just go ahead and give me a bathtub full of their shrimp and grits for me to swim in. The Beer Brown Gravy dropped over this is simply fantastic. Start out with a lil cast iron skillet of Pemto Cheese Dip! Plenty of indoor seating and a nice outdoor courtyard to choose from.

Yelp
We have been to the one in LA and now Sac, Fixins never disappoints. The food reminds you of home, comfort and soulfully delicious with every bite.
google avatar

Suzanne S.

Yelp
We dipped in on a Sunday afternoon. Not the best time because you hit the Sunday rush but glad we did because this chicken is bomb. Breast is so succulent and skin is crispy. Jazzy got us seated in about 30 min and Alondra was our server. She was very friendly and did her best to get to us in a timely manner. They were very busy. And a diverse crowd. The game was on and the vibe was right. This food is all that. The greens are well seasoned with turkey meat. The mac and cheese is made with a rue and will have you right. Do yourself a favor and stop by to get your FIX!
google avatar

Yelp
I think this place is slightly overhyped and their food is inconsistent. The fried chicken is outstanding, but what's a good southern place without good sides? Every single side we tried was so bad. The Mac and cheese - dry beyond belief, zero flavor or cheese whatsoever. The coleslaw - just tasted like mayo. The fried - overly salted. However, the cornbread was very good and moist. I wouldn't return simply for how inconsistent it was. Also, the service is terrible, it took way too long for our server to check on us throughout our night (maybe 20 minutes between each time we saw her).
google avatar

Jen-Ann L.

Yelp
A solid Southern restaurant. The staff and clientele of this establishment are always so relaxed and welcoming. It straddles the line of a comfort restaurant with comfort foods but with excellent service and upscale plating. Very comparable to the Porch or South for those Sacramentans that remember. Offerings: - Smothered Fried Chicken: the perfect juxtaposition of textures, creamy gravy and crispy chicken. I will say this was a bit on the saltier side, but it is what you expect from the description. - Charred Okra: served with bacon, I would have appreciated a bit more charring but there is a fine line between charred and burnt. - Macaroni and Cheese: a solid version, could have used a bit more salt/butter in my opinion. But still very good. - Fried Chicken Sandwich: very good! - Fries: These were fine. What you expect as a side, nothing to write home about. - Fried Green Tomatoes: Almost a fish fry batter on the outside. Fried very well and served with sauce. I think the tomato itself was fine, it was all the extras that made the dish good. - Mac and Cheese Balls: I think I prefer this to the regular Mac and cheese solely based on a difference in texture. The flavor was very similar, if not less flavorful, but the fried exterior really piqued my interest. Overall, everything was good, but rather expected.

Yelp
Came and had brunch with my husband. Service was great. Food was amazing. Vibes were great. It was so good that we had to get dinner to go for later. Definitely planning on coming back soon.

Yelp
I can't believe I've never done a review for this place. It is one of our favorites. I've never had a bad meal here. My go-to is the catfish with an extra fillet on the side, cornbread, fries, red beans, and rice. Tonight, I changed it up and went with the two-piece fried chicken meal (dark meat) with a catfish fillet on the side. My wife had catfish, greens, and yams. We love the vibe, the staff, and the food. It's definitely worth the trip.
google avatar

Yelp
This is our go-to when we come to visit our daughter at Sac State. This time we went on a busy Saturday night. When we drove up, it was packed, so we reserved online using Open Table. Although we had to wait .35 mins once we checked in, everyone was super nice about it so we didn't mind. Food was slightly better this time! The chicken was so fresh and the waffle was thin and crispy like I like it. Service was excellent. Parking is not too bad. There's no dedicated parking lot but there is a public lot around the corner if you can't find street parking. This place is way better than Roscoe's in southern ca and refreshing to eat indoors or outdoors in a nice clean facility.

Yelp
Came here with a few of my girlfriends (definitely recommend making reservations if you're with a larger group). Soul food isn't usually my go-to, but I was blown away by the menu--so many tempting options! Luckily, being in a big group meant we could order a variety and sample a little of everything. Here's what we shared: Chicken & Waffles Shrimp & Grits Smothered Oxtails Collard Greens Mac n' Cheese Charred Okra One thing to note: soul food is hearty, and the portions are generous--so I couldn't finish a full plate on my own. That said, every single dish was seasoned to perfection. My personal standouts were the Shrimp & Grits, the Oxtails, and the Charred Okra--so flavorful and satisfying. The staff was warm and welcoming, and the music was on point. Honestly, they need to open a location closer to the Bay--it was so good!

Yelp
I'm visiting from out of town and my sisters, cousins and friends suggested Fixins for dinner. We drovr the 48 mins from Stockton to Sac and it's was so worth it. We ordered: fried deviled eggs - it was good. i'm not into deviled eggs so it was good. fried green tomatoes - this was good too smothered pork chops, grits & mac - the gravy on the juicy grid pork chops was delicious. the grits were great but needed to be warmer that room temp. the mac and cheese was 10/10. my plate was very well balanced. nothing too salty, or too overpowering. just comforting and it's the spot. 10/10 braised oxtail - fall off the bone, delicious, umami, and loved the gelatinous of it in the gravy fried catfish - probably the best seasoned fried fish i had. i just love how it's not too salty! it's perfect! dessert: we got all three! amazing! delicious! the red velvet was moist! Overall, the music, food, service and ambience were great! I will definitely come back for more.

Yelp
Wow, wow & WOW! It's been years since I've had a delicious meal at a restaurant and I was not disappointed. Everything we ordered made me say "WOW, I can't believe it tastes like a homemade meal. It was 3 of us. I ordered the smothered chicken with Mac & cheese & red beans and rice. That was a 10/10! My bf ordered omg the Oxtail with rice plate and the flavor was on point. I usually add salt to everything (I know it's bad) But we didn't need any salt. That's how delicious it was! 10/10 My 3 year old ordered Mac and cheese and a chicken leg. He loved it! Oh and we ordered the deep fried deviled eggs! So good and cornbread I'm very socially awkward anywhere we go but this place had an amazing ambiance, I loved seeing the many families enjoying their time. And lastly, our server was awesome. She made sure we always had everything we needed. We will be back and this time with our other 3 kids! We can not wait

Yelp
First time here and I'm very impressed. Almost everything I ate was amazing. Jae was our awesome server who was attentive and engaging. We started with the artichoke dip, corn fritters and fried green tomatoes, all which were very flavorful and I would order again. I ordered the 3 sides: grits, red beans & rice and mac n cheese. Let me just say, I have NEVER had mac n cheese this good at a restaurant, it was creamy and delicious and the red beans were extremely flavorful as well. My sis and I didn't care for the grits but would definitely order the mac and red beans again. Sis got the fish nuggets which were fried very well, not hard at all. Some also got the yams which they loved. Overall, I would most definitely return. The restaurant is located in the Oak Park neighborhood of Sacramento. The parking was somewhat difficult as I think the theater around the corner was hosting an event. The restaurant has both in and outdoor seating and the decor is quite nice. The staff is pleasant and the wait was not long once we ordered. Again, would return and looking forward to it.

Yelp
My family and I stopped at this restaurant for brunch while we were visiting the Sacramento area on July 22, 2025 (Tuesday). Since it was my brother-in-law's birthday, he actually found and chose this place to eat at. I'm very glad he chose to eat here because it was definitely a great choice! The fried chicken that came with my waffle was extremely flavorful and moist. The waffle was thin, which meant it wouldn't be too filling. The music was great to add to the overall ambiance. The service was also excellent as well! We will definitely be back here next time we visit Sacramento.
google avatar

JP B.

Yelp
Consistently delicious food, friendly and attentive service in the perfect location. I'm sensitive to loud noise due to hearing loss and nerve damage in the Army but I wasn't bothered by the chatter of the crowd. It's definitely a destination restaurant to take friends visiting from out of town.
google avatar

Dee V.

Yelp
The oxtail & potato salad came out really sweet The Mac and cheese was on the grany side. But the kool aid and adult kool aid was delicious. The pieces of fried chicken were really small and some were salty. Service took a while to get to our table and we had got there before a large party came in and they had took their order first so it was a bit upsetting. But everyone was friendly and it was clean inside.

Yelp
Great food, great venue. Visited with family, only issue was the service being a bit slow, but the quality & quantity of the food made up for it. Highlights for our group included the pimento cheese dip appetizer, the fried chicken, the burger, the spiked kool-aid, peach cobbler & red velvet cake.
google avatar

Lynn F.

Yelp
Back again everything we had was different. Pork chops smothered with gravy, Chicken sandwich and 3 pieces of chicken with beans and salad and candied yams also oka fried. Maya was our waitress and we was well taken care of. The place is very fun and unique.
google avatar

Yelp
First time visit on a Sunday afternoon, and it was fantastic. The outdoor ambiance was perfect, and the service was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. The grits were the best I've ever had, the butter of all things...was amazing, and the chicken was perfectly crispy and flavorful. The vegetarian omelet was perfection. I'll definitely be back--highly recommend this place every. single. day. Loved it!

Yelp
Everything was perfect here. Kim was our Server and she was absolutely awesome. Oh, and the food was exquisite. The portions are generous and everything is just so pleasant. Parking was a bit of a challenge, we had to walk a couple blocks away, but it was so worth it.

Yelp
Waffles, Candied Yams, Turkey Collards (omg), Cornbread, Potato Salad (holy kittens it was nearly identical to my granny's) and the Peach Cobbler?! I may dream about that cobbler at some point. Live in San Ramon so the drive was not short, already looking forward to another outing. Nearly everything was excellent. The *only* slight miss was the macaroni and cheese, but my partner said it was decent and I'm more of a dry mac fan so that may be solely personal preference issue. Lavender Lemon Drop - Fantastic! ~ Careful though, snuck up on me. Alcohol taste is nearly undetectable but it's definitely not a weak pour. :) This was REAL southern food with soul, mouth watering and seasoned to perfection. (Ahem, looking at you Cherie's "Southern" Kitchen). Took me back to my childhood family visits in the south. Love the outdoor seating option! Although....the flies tend to be a bit much but if there is any way to tackle that issue it would be awesome. We arrived at 11:00 am for brunch on a Sunday, waited about 10 min to be seated outside. By 12 pm it was fairly packed with a lengthier wait so keep that in mind. Lovely music, people clearly enjoying themselves all around. Excellent food, nice portions, fairly priced. Give Fixins Soul Kitchen a shot!

Yelp
First time! Food was pretty good and came out fast. Eliza was great! Her energy definitely saved our family dinner. We had a group of approximately 20 guests and it was initially difficult to be seated in the private room. Once seated, a couple of the servers were a bit short with our guests, but again Eliza service and energy was great!! As for the food, I'd come back. Good soul food.
google avatar

Adaeze R.

Yelp
The food is decent but not the greatest soul food ever. Service was on par and the food came out pretty fast.

Yelp
Small disappointing fish sandwich for big price tag. So sad, and this was after at 40 minute wait at 3 pm on a Saturday. Bummer, I had heard good things.

Yelp
Yes, you should try it all!!! Lol You can't go wrong with any of the dishes on the menu but I highly recommend the ones we ordered. See photo of receipt to give you an idea of cost. DELICIOUS! **they take reservations** Why I didn't give this place a 5 star.. *our food came before our drinks *took a really long time to get refills on our water Shout out to Aimee and her spanky personality!!! It was a busy evening and she tried to give us extra attention but her service were needed more in other tables. We were a simple set of peeps and didn't require much but a little love after the initial encounter would have been nice. *parking can be challenging. Go up one block and you'll find some We will be back!

Fixins has made it to the top of my list for places to eat in Sac. I think it is one of the best fried chicken + waffles I've ever had -- even competes with other well-known places in other states. The meat is always juicy and flavorful and the flavored butters are the perfect sweetness to complement the savory meal. They can get crowded; personally, I've only been for dinner but I've always been able to get a seat. I love ordering the cheese dip and dipping my chicken in it for another flavor profile!

Yelp
I have been here a couple of times now with family. Each time, the service and food has always been good. Even the owner and NBA legend Kevin Johnson has been there. Fun story, I would choose KJ in NBA Jam as a kid. When I saw him here open the door for us, I just froze and was at a loss for words -- big fan moment! Most recent visit here with family and we ordered a little bit of everything. We lived in the South and familiar with good southern cooking. I got the smothered pork chops with the gravy on the side. Got it with some red beans and rice and collards. The ox tails are always good and usually run out. The fried chicken and waffles is always a nice pick. The fried fish dish is solid. Not a super big knock, but the food is very salty. I do appreciate well-seasoned dishes, but by the end of the meal, we were wanting to chug so much water. Nice home-like vibe whether you dine inside or outside. They also have a bar area if you do so choose.

Yelp
I've been a few times and service has been good from the time we arrived and until we left. The food is so good and well worth the drive to Sacramento.

Yelp
Holy cow, this was great for our 11 person lunch! We were seated in the front where there's a large square table and banquette seating. The service was great, and Aunt Pearl stopped by to check in on us. Such a sweet woman, who's proud of her restaurant and wants to share with all. I had a half and half sweet/unsweetened tea. Even at half sweet, it was pretty sweet. And really good. Starters: - deep fried deviled eggs were great. Crispy and good flavor. - pimiento cheese dip and chips were great. The chips had a nice seasoning on them. Entree food: - the dark meat fried chicken was fantastic. Best fried chicken I've ever had. Better than "the best" from Mew Orleans. Crispy and meat was juicy. - the fried chicken sandwiches were huge! And also great. - smothered fried chicken also good. Sides: - Mac and cheese was creamy, even when it'd cooled off. - okra was delicious, crispy - black eyed peas, collards, candied yams, coleslaw all good - cornbread had a nice crust. Served with a strawberry butter. Different but very tasty. Dessert: - the red velvet cake (big piece!), banana pudding, and peach cobbler were all very good Great experience for our group!

Yelp
I came here with the kids on our way home from a day of skiing. We have been here several times. The food is good with lots of side options. They have a kids menu that's very reasonable which is a bonus when you are dining out with kids. The service was fast and efficient. There used to be long waits when we first started coming, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore the last couple times I can't, but I was also able to make reservations one of those times. I got the fried catfish. It was a lot of food, but good. The kid plates were also a pretty big portion for younger kids. The kids got Kool aid for their drinks, and they get to choose the color they want, so that's always fun for them. The place is busy, but not too noisy. Overall, this is one of our favorite stops when we need a dinner stop in Sac. It's kid-friendly and the are great options for adults too.

Yelp
About noon on a Wednesday. Seated immediately, I requested to sit outside since it is a beautiful day today. A few large groups today, however I am dining alone. My server came within a couple minutes and took my order. I ordered a water, the deep fried deviled eggs and the smothered fried chicken with mac n cheese and cole slaw. My water was brought out quickly. And then shortly after my appetizer. Took about 15 more minutes for my entree to arrive after that. I think I should have ordered the regular fried chicken and requested a side of gravy, because I missed that crunch of the chicken. But that was a me thing. The chicken itself was delicious. I was just missing the crunch. The Mac n cheese was decent and the coleslaw was great. I never thought I would be a person who enjoyed coleslaw, but here I am. 42 and choosing coleslaw instead of fries lol Overall the experience was decent. I wasn't bothered by too many people asking me how I was doing, but I never went without anything. I wish I had the room in my belly to have some banana pudding though, because it is my favorite dessert. Next time.

Yelp
To be perfectly honest, I actually have no idea how I first came across Fixins Soul Kitchen. What I do remember is that as soon as I did, I immediately bookmarked them to come here. Obviously, it was a nice bonus to see that the reviews for this place were so positive, but I kind of expected them to be after seeing all of the delicious looking photos of the food. At that point, it was never in doubt as to whether or not I'd end up coming here, it was just a matter as to how soon it could happen...and why couldn't I make it happen sooner! Given their immense popularity, I was genuinely shocked we didn't have to wait for a table when we walked in without reservations for brunch on a Saturday morning. Not sure if that's typical or if we just got lucky, but I certainly wouldn't recommend temping fate like we did, as this place was packed by the time we left. It's easy to see why - between the lively atmosphere, the cozy back patio area, and their hip-hop playlist (heard so many of my old jams!), the vibe of this place is great! Of course, that's without even mentioning the menu, which is chock full of Southern/soul food staples. From their Fried Chicken & Waffles, Biscuits & Gravy, Smothered Pork Chops, Shrimp & Grits, Fried Fish, Gumbo, all of their fixins, and so much more, there were so many things we wanted to try! -- SAC TOWN MANGO LEMONADE - Hennessy V.S Peach and Mango Puree, Lemon Juice, Sprite...$16 As tempting as the Uncle Nearest Strawberry sounded, the peach and mango puree in this was too good to pass up. Thankfully, this didn't disappoint. The pour wasn't overly heavy, though you could still taste the Hennessy, and I love how well the puree mixed with the Sprite and lemon juice. Refreshing! -- DEEP FRIED DEVILED EGGS - Deep Fried Egg Cups Filled with Creamy Yolks Topped with Bacon and Hot Sauce...$12 Pretty tasty, but I still prefer regular deviled eggs, which I love. The batter had a nice crispiness and the yolk/filling tasted great, thanks to the bacon and the bit of heat it had. That said, given how it's fried, it had a slight taste of oiliness that I wasn't as fond of. Still, great starter! -- CHICKEN & WAFFLES - Two Pieces (Dark) & a Waffle...$16 Quite simply, this was so good! On the outside, the batter was crunchy (in the best of ways) and well seasoned while on the inside, the chicken was juicy and piping hot. As for the waffle, it was just about perfect - big yet not dense nor "bready" and so good with the butter and syrup. -- FRIED FISH - Cornmeal Crusted Fish Served with Corn Fritters and Choice of Two Fixins (Grits and Collared Greens)...$ More solid than spectacular. The cornmeal crust made this feel a bit dry, but the fish itself was moist and the fritters were delicious (crispy, flavorful). As for the fixins, I'm not big on collared greens, but these weren't too shabby, and I liked how creamy the grits were, though, we forgot to add cheese. Along with how good the food was, our server was great - super friendly and very engaging. Plus, he was so (unnecessarily) apologetic that they were out of certain fixins that we wanted (unless we wanted to wait). We had to keep telling him it wasn't that big of a deal, as we were curious about most of their entire slate on the menu. Also, the other thing that I LOVED about our trip here was how easy to was to find parking. I don't know if we were similarly lucky, but it was both awesome and refreshing to able to find a spot around the corner without having to circle endlessly around the neighborhood. Now, I just need to figure out when I'll be able to make my way back here to check out their dinner menu! FOUR AND A HALF STARS rounded down for now.

Yelp
First time eating here and was pleased. The food was okay. I had Fish, macaroni and cheese, and the greens, which were very tasty. My grandson had a chicken sandwich which came with one side, he chose macaroni and cheese also. He said it was good. I gave it four stars because my fish was really greasy, but our server Kimberly was excellent!! I would go again to try other things on the menu.

Yelp
I definitely enjoy coming to this spot when I am craving some soul food. I recently ordered the fried chicken - 2 piece light & dark, Mac & cheese, and some yams!! Definitely worth it. The chicken and waffles are also a must if you truly enjoy a little sweet and a little savory. I also loved the fried green tomatoes with their chipotle aioli. The food overall was delicious! The ambience was well maintained for a busy Sunday and the server was extremely friendly. Thank you FIXINS!

Yelp
For whatever reason, Fixins Soul Kitchen caught our eye on yelp and we decided to make the 93-mile each way drive to give them a taste. It was definitely a worthy trek. With the Princess in tow, we headed out. We lucked into a parking space about two blocks away, giving us time to stretch our legs before tucking into lunch. It was a nice spring day with a mild wind. We stood outside for a minute and looked over the menu once more. Our routine is that I'll go directly to the patio area with the Princess while she goes inside to order. Today she followed me into the patio and entered through the side entrance. The host told her that if were eating in, they would provide table service, and brought us menus, welcoming us. Our server would be with us shortly. Jae (I hope I got that right) came over and asked if we had any questions. I told him no and that we were ready to order. Because of the long drive, we decided to try as many flavors as we could knowing that we would end up with leftovers. We ordered: Deep Fried Devil Eggs - 5 - we've never had Deviled Eggs like this before. The whites are battered and deep fried and then the eggs are put back in place with a wedge of crispy bacon on top. To keep the eggs from rolling around on the plate, a dollop of the eggs was placed under the egg as well. Fish Nuggets - 5 - Dusted with cornmeal and fried to perfection, these little nuggets were the cat's meow. I could easily eat these all day long with the lightly spiced chipotle dipping sauce they were served with. There was also a tartar sauce for those who preferred. Oxtails - 4 - A good portion of oxtails (3 medium), great gravy and rice. The only thing that could have improved this dish was just a bit more cooking time. The oxtails were good but still a bit chewy. I like my oxtails to be completely falling off the bone. Gumbo - 5 - Absolutely delicious and adding on the prawns took it over the top. A very warming and satisfying dish. Fried Chicken - 5 - Crispy on the outside, moist and tasty on the inside. We asked for all dark and got three thighs. The crust looked like it had been fried hard but that was an illusion. Just a tad salty overall, especially cold the next day, but still overall delicious. Red Beans n Rice - 3 - This was our least favorite dish. There wasn't anything wrong with it, but we've become so accustomed to the Popeye's creamy version that it's become the standard that we use. It may have been wiser not to get this dish since we already had rice with the Gumbo and Oxtails. Mac N Cheese - 5 - My wife never orders Mac n Cheese anywhere although I do in the hopes of finding a good one. She actually like this one. It was reminiscent of the Mac n Cheese that Mrs. Jackson used to make when my wife was a child. Mrs. Jackson ran a Cafe in West Oakland two generations ago before the Acorn Projects were built. Candied Yams - 5 - Way too sweet for me but she loved them. This dish, along with the Mac n Cheese were similar to the sides that we used to get from Sunday Church Plates when the local churches cooked as fund raisers. Peach Cobbler & Vanilla Ice Cream - 4 - Jae asked if we wanted dessert. I didn't because we were already stuffed to the gills. My wife asked what they had and was told: Peach Cobbler, Red Velvet Cake and Banana Pudding. I asked if the peaches were fresh or canned and Jae said fresh. So, my wife ordered it to go. When it was presented in two containers, we discovered that the cobbler was in one and the ice cream in another. Naturally we can't waste the ice cream so she ate it. Then we reheated the cobbler for dessert without ice cream. Once again, way too sweet for me. The ice cream would have toned it down some. We took away one star because we felt that more peaches were in order. We met Aunt Pearl who came out and introduced herself. She also told us that she was the actual Aunt to Kevin Johnson and his wife Michelle, the founders. It was important to the brand that she made sure that everyone was satisfied with the service and the food. I'm an old bay area news guy and I have more trivia filed away in my head than I can possibly catalog. After she walked away, I thought about the name and why it sounded familiar. I looked him up online and found that he had been Mayor of Sacramento. The restaurant was clean inside and out, including the restrooms. Service was excellent as was the food. There was more than enough on the menu to make us happy. Definitely a place we would return when in the area.
