We were super excited to try FK--who wouldn't be? The reviews are stellar, the photos of both the food and interior, gorgeous! We love delicious, thoughtfully prepared food! AND it's a close walk for us! But, we were pretty disappointed on our first (and likely final) visit a few days ago...
We were the first table to arrive and be seated on Sunday! The host was a little sleepy seeming, but we didn't pay it much heed. Our waiter however, left much to be desired....To start, while filling our glasses, our waiter spilled water on our table. He left abruptly, with no apology (?!) and came back to clean it up. Only he didn't clean all of it up leaving a giant puddle on our table. Another waiter came along and cleaned the rest of it, jovially remarking, "I don't know what happened here..."
While FK's wine list is substantial (and my 5oz glass of gruner veltliner, apparently on special, was a shocking $22--my fault as I misread the menu thinking it was $13), my partner prefers beer. Apparently the oxygen was broken for beer on tap, so no beer, not even a bottle, was available. No discount, complimentary drink or significant apology was offered.
My cocktail was lovely, and beautifully presented however.
The house-made selection of breads was very nice, and one of my favourite parts of the meal. We enjoyed it so much that we ordered a second basket. A complimentary amuse-bouche was also part of the experience, presented on handmade plates. Again, the plates were pretty but the amuse-bouche itself was a bit boring--beet and deep fried goat cheese without any twist or anything especially interesting.
We had a tough time deciding on what to order! Everything sounded amazing, but thought it strange that no specials were on offer.
We split the foie gras with quince as an appetizer and we were less than wowed--again beautifully presented, but far from the best foie we've had--far from bad, just uninspired tasting. As we were eating, our strange waiter approached and asked us how we were enjoying the octopus (!!!), to which we just politely nodded. A few moments later, he came back, and asked how we were enjoying the foie--no explanation or humour as if he were a robot thinking we didn't notice he'd asked us erroneously a few minutes ago.
My partner chose the duck confit, and I the scallops, two our our favourites. We were expecting smaller portions, but these portions were small even for fine dining. Again, these plates were artfully presented, but the actual food left something to be desired both in flavour and quantity. Our overall verdict was that this was decent but not very good food.
We decided to supplement our dinner with a side of parm fries...for $10 :/ No one asked us if we enjoyed our mains or the fries.
This disappointing meal did end with a small joy--the house-made truffles were creamy with a delicious hint of salt. Those truffles didn't make the $210 bill any sweeter however. We left feeling hungry and let down.
I understand that people and places have off days, but you'd think both the host and waiter would be fresh and eager for the start of the evening--we were the first to arrive after all! Truthfully, it seemed like the waiter was high--very awkward and neither professional or personable. Totally disinterested and disconnected.
You'd think that if any restaurant had to inform the customer that no beer on tap was available, at least they'd have a bottle or two on offer.
