11 Unforgettable Historic Train Journeys

"Europe’s steepest non-funicular railway is in southern Norway, covering 10 miles from the high plateau of Myrdal to the tiny fjord-side town of Flåm. The historic Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana in Norwegian) passes through wide valley vistas and alongside dramatic waterfalls, and chugs at a leisurely pace through 20 tunnels, some with “windows” carved in the side so passengers don’t miss a beat. Starting construction in 1924 after decades of planning, it took more than 15 years to complete the short line, including the steepest grade of any European railway that runs on standard gauge track. Funiculars and miniature railways may rise at more of a slant, but the Flåm line’s five and a half percent grade is hard work for a locomotive, and the payoff is some of the most beautiful fjord landscape in Scandinavia. With a grade on this much of a slope, keeping control of the train’s speed is crucial, both going up and coming down. The engine averages around 19 mph (30 km/h) on the downhill trek to Flåm, and tops out at 25 miles an hour (40 km/h) on the way up to Myrdal. You can almost hear the train whispering “I think I can, I think I can…”" - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Fantastic mini museum, and it's free! Takes about 30 minutes to go through and definitely worth a visit. Flam railway history and how it was built was fascinating to learn about. Awesome gift store in the front.

Really nice museum with lots to see inside, as well as a couple of real trains. Lots of historical artifacts pertaining to Flåm Railway - staff uniforms, tools and equipment, photos, historically accurate models of trains. There's even a scale model of the whole railway network in the Flåm area including the museum station itself (which, I believe, was a station earlier), which should be moving, however was inoperational when we visited. The only negative thing I can think of is that there's not enough descriptions. It's often difficult to understand what this or that thing is for. Or maybe I wasn't attentive enough. You'll also find a shop there with merchandise goods.

Quite an interesting place to spend 20 minutes while waiting for the actual train to arrive. They provide a history of how the railway was made, and there is a lovely display of model trains. They do also have an actual old train on display - it is roped off so you cannot climb on board, but you can still take photos with it.

Good to visit. It’s free. Full of information on the history of building the railway. The video with English captions was especially good to watch. Nice little shop too.

it is located right outside the station. From outside it looks small, but it's quite big inside. It is really worth seeing the engineering marvel. The exhibition shows how one of the steepest train route in the world was started and how over the years it was improved upon to its present condition. One has to see it to believe it. The old photos, articles and even old wagons are really worth seeing. The entrance is free. If you want to see in detail, then you you need 1/2 hours. Worth seeing...

This museum is a true treasue. It's a beautiful, clean space with a free entry for everybody, inviting tourists to step in and explore the history surrounding the creation of the railway, which remains a the main attraction in the area of Flam. It not only delves into the railway's history but also provides insights into the daily life of that era. At the entrance, there's also a souvenir shop where, along with your exploration of the museum, you can indulge in some tax free shopping. It is, indeed true, that it may appear small from the outside, the museum surprises with its spacious interior, featuring the highlight of an old train section at the back. Highly recommended if you're in the area, and just a 10-minute visit can be quite rewarding.

Super cute museum with a free audio guide. We really enjoyed learning about the history of the railway and thought this museum was informative, well kept and a great way to spend an hour. It is free to enter so definitely worth a stop.
