Local Caribbean Food Chain Flames Will Expand to Dorchester - Eater Boston

"A Boston-based Caribbean restaurant chain called Flames is opening a new location in Dorchester’s Peabody Square neighborhood, an employee confirmed to Eater. This will be the fourth location for Flames, which also operates in Mattapan, Grove Hall, and Mission Hill. Flames owner Jonathan Chambers is currently in the process of renovating the space at 1 Peabody Sq., which was previously home to a chiropractic office, according to the Dorchester Reporter. Flames is known for menu items such as jerk chicken wings, Jamaican beef patties, plantain chips, roti, barbecue ribs, and various curry stews. The company hasn’t yet announced a timeline for opening; stay tuned for updates." - Terrence Doyle

I ordered oxtail from here and it was tender enough but had no seasoning. I ordered Take-out because the ambiance feels like an abandoned middle school cafeteria and realized [at home] my order was incomplete. I had a mound of rice. No cabbage, which is supposed to come with it. When I called, she asked if I received plantains. Apparently, those are a complimentary side. She tells me you have to ask for them. If it is someone's 1st time, how are they supposed to know that? I saw no signage that indicates this-so they offer three sides but only tell you about 2...AND THE FOOD WAS BASIC. One would think she would have refunded a part of my order since I was missing two of the 3 sides I paid for. she informs me the next time I come in to ask for them. I had already informed her it was a 45 minute train ride ONE WAY. Lastly, the woman who prepped my order had the personality of a hostage. Keep your sides. I will not be returning.

Really love the jerk chicken. My first two visits were for dinner and I found that a lot of the pieces were mostly bone with a tiny bit of dark meat. However, my third visit was at lunchtime and the dish was fantastic, with lots of white meat. I do hope they'll add Apple Pay support again soon!

UPDATE: PRICES KEEP GOING UP ON EVERYTHING! I USUALLY GET A SMALL CURRY CHICKEN FOR LUNCH! IT WAS 10.99 WENT UP TO 12.99 ….TODAY I TRIED FOR BREAKFAST THE YOUNG LADY TOLD ME CURRY IS 16$ now medium only and if I wanted COLLADO IT WOULD BE 19$. SO BASICALLY 2 BREAKFAST ITEMS FOR BREAKFAST FOR 20$. YALL LOST ME!! ✌️ I always go to this flames I would consider it the best out the handful in Boston. It’s a new building and I’m sure they have a different chef usually go for a chicken meal whether it’s , curry , bbq or sweet chilli. There’s also Jerk chicken if you like a little kick. On this visit it was pretty good as usual but my veggies were cold and seeing as how I came in fairly early in the afternoon I would figure that everything would be fresh and hot or if not fresh at least hot. I’ve worked in restaurants before so I know the importance of not throwing out food but I would just hope that everything on my plate would be hot but overall still as far as taste and freshness I would pick them over all.

Lesson learned. Never buying anything from this location ever again or recommending anyone I know to buy from here. Unsanitary and bad business. I hate to do this because I really like the food and support Caribbean business but I can’t support you if you don’t support us. TERRIBLE FOR BUSINESS!!! Take a look ay my pictures for yourself!

Google
this location is one of the better ones imo. beef patty + cheese + coco bread didn’t miss & the jerk chicken on rice was solid. lots of bones in the chicken, all good but hoped for more meat overall good. Giving 5 stars for the magnums lol

Google
SO delicious! We got the jerk chicken and the oxtail, and they were absolutely delicious. The rice with beans paired really well with the meats, and the plantains were juicy and hot, the perfect combo. The oxtail meat in particular was soft and flavorful; the only gripe we had was there wasn’t more meat on the bone.

OMG I just experienced very very poor customer service today. I ordered salt fish. It was so salty very nasty. The worst I ever had and I normally don’t complain. The attitude is very rude. I pulled up in my car. Everyone came put in the back saying move my car I can’t park there someone is coming Very low class ignorant folks. I got a lesson for them. The worst Jamaican restaurant in Boston please do not eat there. They’re very rude and very racist and I’m gonna show them. How move disgusting I will make sure I contact my bank so I won’t be charged for this item. Please don’t go there. One of the young ladies was digging in her nose. The manager the man is very rude very ignorant.

Google
Order a medium Oxtail dinner and was given 6 small pieces. They have no problem with serving you a bag of rice but will give you the end pieces of the tail. I'm very disappointed, the young lady that made my plate had an attitude and I will not be supporting this business again. I placed the Oxtails on a plate so you can see how small they are.

Yelp
My initial impression of this location wasn't the best, but I'm so glad I gave it another chance. I've been back several times since, and I'm consistently impressed by how clean the restaurant is. The service is good. The food is vibrant and fresh. It's definitely become a spot that I frequent. I love the sweet and spicy chicken .

Yelp
Food: Three words: buss. down. plates. That's what's we call flavorful food that makes you want to dance and rub your tummy, where I'm from. When I had my first bite of jerk chicken, the first thought that came to mind was: "FINALLY. Some *real* food." I moved to Boston a few months ago, and people kept telling me this recurring issue about Boston food establishments -- that the food is meant to please the New England palette and was thus mildly flavorful/lacking in spice, across the board. I'm so glad Flames proved me wrong. The jerk chicken was packed with spice/punch, the rice and peas were perfectly cooked, and the cabbage was just right. My friend had the oxtail and it was also divinely delicious. One other important detail -- the portion sizes are generous! I took my plate to-go and had the heavenly leftovers for lunch the next day. Ambiance: I loved the simple yet cultural feel of the establishment. The place is casual, but there are lovely paintings of African descendant peoples in community that adorn the walls. It made me feel so at home. Service: The service was quick here. To the point and helpful. I cannot recommend Flames enough!!! Definitely a place I will bring friends/family when trying to impress them about Boston's offerings.

Yelp
The food isn't bad, palatable for most appetites whether it be American or Caribbean. However, the attitude of the servers are not always welcoming. They seem to resent any questions and adopt a "stiff" attitude. I usually enjoy the food but when one is faced with that kind of coldness, the food tends to lose it flavor.

Yelp
Decided to come back and try this location for the second time. Let me start off by saying, I'm pretty sure I got over charged. I ordered medium curry goat with rice and beans, small sweet and spicy chicken with white rice, beef patty, and side order of Mac and cheese. Mac and cheese for $5 and that's how much I got lol legit one tiny scoop. Not worth it. I'm positive my order shouldn't be $45. Make sure to ASK for pricing before ordering. Sweet and spicy chicken 2/5 . Chicken was dry. Curry goat 4/5. Pretty good. Good enough spice. Mac and cheese 1/5. Dry and bland

Yelp
The worst flames location of them all.. the isn't friendly and the food isn't up to par with the other locations however i decided to give them a second chance tonight. I ordered a Jamaican patty( assuming you cant mess Tht up lol) i was wrong. The shit was rock hard and looked old i asked for a new one ans they legit just microwaved the one i first bought (when they gave it back It was broken in the same place)... yea never again! Brockton and morton street are miles better than this location

Yelp
Nice Jamaican foods. The price has gone up, in a lot of places(including this one). It's worth the price. The portions are generous and they always have plenty of options. I usually get their curry chicken or jerk chicken dinner. my family enjoys other items on the menu.

Nicole S.

Yelp
I would give it a 3.5 if they offered door dash or Ubereats. But the reviews on here are accurate. Service is SUBPAR, and how they handle the food at the front is questionable, hence why I keep it simple and get porridge only. My advice, If they actually read these reviews, is the people at the front be more welcoming, especially towards women, because they only seem to smile when men are in there. I often go in there and I can hear her whole personal conversation from the person who's taking my order how are you on the phone and working at the same time?

Yelp
Very disappointed. It's been a year or two since I've been to Flames seeing as the price went up recently due to inflation. Spent nearly 15 bucks for a medium curry chicken. I'm amazed at how the quality of the food that Flames serves has gone down. The veges were undercoooked. The rice was overcooked or old. The curry chicken was alright if a bit watery. Overall the combination wasn't great. I'll try this location in another year or two and see if anything changes.

Yelp
If you like jerk chicken or goat curry - well this is your spot! Kind staff and generous portions, this is heavenly Jamaican food

Yelp
Ignore the negative reviews (maybe there were early growing pains). Staff is friendly. Portions are huge. Food is bomb. 4.5

Yelp
My first time trying this location, I usually go to the one on Huntington Ave. I do love that the place is spacious and clean. It's also in a convenient area. This one is closer to my house than the other two. Although the food was good, I was a little disappointed in the portions. The other locations are definitely more generous.

Yelp
The stewed steak and jerk chicken hit every time. And they never give me attitude when requesting oxtail gravy on the rice. That alone has me coming back weekly! Always clean, efficient service and reasonably priced.

Miriam R.

Yelp
I walked in the restaurant and everything looked delicious, so I decided to order the curry goat, rice and beans and cabbage. The curry goat was so spicy it overwhelmed the entire meal that everything tasted the same. After taking three bites of it, I had to throw it away. $13.00 dollars wasted.

Yelp
The food at the restaurant is always great. We especially love the chicken curry patties, those are a must try! Recently we started getting food plates to explore the other items and have always enjoyed it. The food is simple and delicious. Sometimes the staff is hit or miss. One trip they are awesome and the next they are cold and too busy on their phones to really pay attention to the customers. That being said, I would highly recommend trying this food if you have not yet.

Yelp
The woman name Drea was very rude and confrontational. I notice she has a habit of being condescending. I am a regular customer here and she is constantly rude for no reason. I usually get stew chicken and today it tasted off and when I brought it to her attention she yelled at me. First she told I could not get a refund. So I settle and tried to try something else on the menu. Then when I ask to speak to a manager or hire up she told me there was no one the after I saw that there were other people in the back. She finally gave me a refund after I insisted the 2nd time. As long she works here I would not be back. It might seem small but I notice another customer walk out right before ordering. Maybe if you start to loose business because of her then maybe someone will have a chat with her about her customer service skills! Very disappointed!

Yelp
We finally tried Flames and were not disappointed! We had jerk chicken, curry chicken, and stewed steak combos as well as mac and cheese, plantains, and beef patties. Food was awesome and spicy, generous portions, reasonable prices, and the service was friendly! We will be back for sure.
