Best Restaurants to Try While Visiting Wilmington, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"Opened in 2000 by owners Amy and Jay Muxworthy, Flaming Amy’s is as well-known for its burritos as it is for the nearly-ubiquitous “Eat At Flaming Amy’s” bumper stickers. There are chips and queso and nacho platters, but the unique burritos are the real draw. The Bayou comes with spicy Creole jambalaya sauce, rice, beans, cheese, and a choice of grilled filling seasoned with Cajun spices, while the Philly “Phatboy” has grilled steak, green peppers, onions, mushrooms, lettuce, diced tomato, sour cream, and cheese. Heat lovers should stick with the original Flaming Amy burrito, packed with chipotle peppers, fresh jalapenos, mild green chiles, lettuce, cheese, sour cream, rice, beans, “Flaming Hot” salsa, and a choice of grilled filling. There is a second location in Carolina Beach for those not wanting to make the trek into town." - Matt Lardie

When I pulled into the parking lot of FAB I had really high hopes. The atmosphere outside from the awesome murals to the flashy colored tables were hip and exciting. The abundant local artwork kept the fun vibe going inside. Sadly that’s about where the fun stopped 😕. I was sure the reviews talking about bland food had to be the exception, but it was the case for us, too. Ordered various burritos including the shrimp Fajita-rito, the Philly Fat Boy, and the Thai Me Up. Every burrito was loaded with mediocre veggies and flavorless meat. It tasted very much like they’re using ready-made meats and just assembling the burritos rather than actually cooking in-house. I could be wrong, but nothing felt very authentic or like it had been made with pride or care. I REALLY wanted to like Flaming Amy’s but I won’t be back.

Not enough can be said about this place!! The decor and murals are very quirky and inviting, but the food is on a different level! The big jerk burrito was phenomenal and the portion was insanely large (great price). Loved the salsa bar and refillable chips!! Also loved the free stickers!! This is a must visit!

Google
We ordered 2 burritos and they are huge. You will be definitely stuffed when done eating. I can't forget to tell you to get the tortilla chips, because they're delicious and there are so many salsas to choose from. The staff are nice and friendly. The reason I gave a 4 is because for the price, I would have liked to seen more meat on the burrito. Will we be back to Flaming Amy's? Yes, the next time we're near the beach.

We enjoyed the food. They have something for everyone and a salsa bar and fresh chips. The jerk chicken salad was very good. Enjoyed our meal and service was great. You have to see the Elvis room.

As a tourist, I was excited to try out this local Mexican restaurant. The reviews looked great, and menu was vast with lots of options Unfortunately, the food was below average. I had the Quesadilla-Zilla, and it came with rice and beans. I opted for the rice and Pinto beans, and when it came out, both were cold. The rice stuck together, and the beans looked like they came from a store-bought can. The chips we got from the counter were stale, however, the variety of salsas was nice. I had steak, extra cheese, and grilled fajita peppers. The steak was tender, but lacked any sort of flavor. The cheese tasted store-bought, and it just wasn’t good. The staff was friendly, but the wait time was a little long. Disappointed in my experience here, and would likely not return.

So I think there is something different with this location. I was at the other location about 6 months ago and loved it! But, something seems off at this one. My wife ordered the bbq nachos. After we ordered we were informed they were out of grilled chicken so we switched to jerked chicken. Also it was supposed to come with bbq sauce and didn’t. Plus the queso here was thin and watery. I ordered the PIG burrito, it was good. 👍 My kids got chicken tenders but the staff forgot the fruit cups. I don’t know not trying to be a downer because I love the other location and concept, but today just didn’t deliver.

This is our 3rd trip here (annual trip). The first two were amazing, the burritos were huge and salsas were delicious. I had gotten the notorious P.I.G. and it was so good, we were planning our stop as soon as we got into town. This trip, I got the avocado ranch club, which was really good, smaller than previous visits, but still a good size. My husband got the nacho carnivore and it wasn’t that great. There wasn’t a lot of toppings on the nachos, mainly just melted shredded cheese. The salsas were a little watery this trip as well, but still tasty. The tortilla chips were stale though, which may have been a fluke, we came on a Sunday. We also got two ground beef tacos for our kiddo and he thought they were pretty good. The place is pretty laid back, indoor and outdoor seating and the staff were nice.

Visiting from out of town and most places were difficult to find parking and luckily we did not have this problem here. Quick and friendly service with a large menu to choose from.

Yelp
Don't order delivery. Won't even show up, but they'll show it delivered. Unacceptable and very disappointed. Was really looking forward to this after a day on the beach. Uses a service called Chownow. Requested a full refund and they say it takes 48 hours to review. $66 tied up. Update, went and picked it up myself today. Food is very good. Go get it yourself.

Yelp
Never been to Carolina Beach? Just drove in from somewhere 500 miles away or near the Canadian border, and perhaps suspicious of tiki decorations and "best burgers on the beach" signs next to a giant fake shark? Perhaps you spot the mural-clad building on the side of the road heading out of town and can't make a u-turn fast enough. Flamin' Amy's has a reputation from the sister restaurant further inland and dishes up standard Americanized Mex fare; known best for their forearm sized burritos one can also select soft tacos or quesadillas. This location appears to be converted from an older fast-food joint with booths from an old Hardees and island decor (save the Elvis themed private dining nook). F.A. On our midafternoon Saturday visit was generally clean with a slightly antiseptic smell. The employees, not visible. But after a few short minutes the pleasant staffer took our order next to the "cash preferred" sign. Orders come with complementary chips (in baskets) and salsa (multiple flavors including some non traditional such as avocado and cucumber) self served from a free standing bar station. Food was served promptly on grande dinner plates. Tacos were thin flour, damp and overstuffed with lettuce, falling apart after first bites. Shrimp were thawed and unseasoned; fajita steak was super fatty, chorizo and ground beef were dry. Forgettable. Sides of black beans and brown rice were plentiful but unseasoned. The philly cheesesteak and chinese "wok" burritos were overstuffed but hot and enjoyed by our party. Nutshell - stick to the burritos if you're starving for Mexican and can't leave the beach. They are decent and not overpriced. If you're looking for better fare, head inland to Capricho.

Yelp
So glad this is where we chose to stop for a late lunch. Order your burrito at the register, grab a basket of complimentary chips from the counter, choose from a variety of salsas from the salsa trolley (missed opportunity for a photo) and find a seat. Oh boy! That's one mighty burrito!!! I got the Wok on the Beach and was NOT disappointed. I am so full I need a nap and not to move for a few hours. The fountain soda was perfectly carbonated and I was definitely greedy with the free refills. The decor is spunky and I loved it! Offering artwork from locals to view and buy. And now I'm fat and happy!!
google avatar

George G.

Yelp
Ordered the Big Jerk Burrito. Jerk seasoning was above average, burrito was huge. Pineapple Jalapeño salsa from the trolley complimented it well. Complimentary chips and salsa for the table!

Yelp
I love Flaming Amy's! I ate here years ago while in Wilmington so I knew that I had to go back on my recent trip. The food and atmosphere is amazing! I choose the seasonal turkey and gravy flavored chimichanga. It was amazing! You must try it before it's gone. It paired perfectly well with a delicious beer.
google avatar

Yelp
I was in need of a burrito and this place did not disappoint. It has a cool vibe and great service.

Yelp
Eat at Flaming Amy's! All of the servers were so nice and friendly! I got a half serving of the nachos, and it was a HUGE serving. Their guacamole was great and their queso was amazing as well. My husband got the Churkeychanga which was amazing!! Their chips were fresh and they had lots of salsas to choose from. Whenever I come back this way, I will eat here again!

Katie S.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to eat at CB. Little pricy but portions are huge and you will leave full. Loved the salsa bar too, so nice to try different sauces. I had the nachos but the burritos looked great too. Everyone I was with loved what they got. We will be visiting this place again!

Nancy K.

Yelp
Great food and great service! The salsa bar and unlimited chips are great. Two of us got burritos, which were very filling and delicious. Another member of our party got a burrito bowl and that was enjoyed as well. Cool place.

Yelp
We ordered Flaming Amy's via online ordering through a partner platform. You do pay more than the prices on their website when doing online pickup. They have changed their menu so not everything is available. We ordered a burrito, queso, and two tacos. One of the tacos ordered was the fried avocado taco. They called after we placed our order to let us know they discontinued this and let me sub for another flounder taco. The overall food was great. The pickup time quoted wasn't accurate. It took at least another ten minutes after quoted for the food to be ready. There weren't many people here but only a few people working. We weren't in a rush so that was ok. The food is prepared in tin foil which makes the steam from the tacos trapped and the shell gets stuck to the foil. It was hard to eat the taco without making a mess everywhere. Napkins or utensils were not provided in our order.

Yelp
We visited Flaming Amy's for a casual dinner one weekday evening while vacationing in Carolina Beach. Their concept is simple - you order at the front counter, get your own chips and salsa, and find a table. We started with the black bean queso. It was one of my favorite dishes of the night! For our entrees, I had a basic shrimp quesadilla, and my husband had a double ground beef burrito. The quesadilla used smaller shrimp, but had a lot of them. The filling was just shrimp and cheese, although I could have easily jazzed it up with any of their number of available fillings. This would be a great meal for kids or picky eaters, as you can customize everything. The quesadilla had a lot of cheese, and I especially loved dipping pieces of my quesadilla into the black bean queso. I also enjoyed the included sour cream. My dish came with rice and beans (I chose pinto), and both were good, although the rice was a bit on the crunchy side. My husband loved his burrito. It was fat and well-filled! Enough said. The salsa bar had a lot of options, and we enjoyed the variety. The atmosphere was spacious and comfortable. And the prices couldn't be beat. Flaming Amy's is a step above Chipotle, Moe's, or similar concepts. We'd likely return if we revisit Carolina Beach.

Yelp
We decided to stop here on the way out of town. It was super easy to understand how to order. We brought our dogs onto the patio... definitely dog friendly! We ordered the seafood burritos can't remember the names of them. But we loved them. They wrote so tasty in comparison to the previous taco place we had tried. It's similar to a Chipotle but better. There was a salsa bar and we tried all that they offered. Everything was just so good and seasoned to perfection. If we ever end up in Carolina beach again we plan on going here! Can't miss it!!
google avatar

Ben P.

Yelp
It's November so that means Churkeychanga time! First of November until right before turkey day is the only time it's available. And it's worth a try, we get at least 1 every year but it's hard not to get a regular menu item too and hit up the salsa bar! Almost always a manageable line, but that is the sign they are doing things right.
google avatar

Emma G.

Yelp
This is the best spot at CB. Flaming Amy's is so amazing (RIP bowl :"( you are missed). They have an extensive menu across many cuisines. Since it is a burrito spot, you have plenty of Mexican-ish options. There is also some Asian options and some other American-esque options. We called it in while on the beach and it was ready within 10 minutes. The prices are cheap and the ingredients are really good quality. The burritos are massive and can honestly make two meals. They come with chips so be sure to grab some salsas: the ginger peach is amazing. There are tons of vegan options and it is so easy to customize exactly what you're in the mood for. I love the Wok on the beach with tofu, but you seriously cannot go wrong!

Radhi C.

Yelp
Loved "Thai me up" burrito with jerk tofu and black beans, was hearty enough to keep me filled up till dinner. The complimentary tortilla chips were ok. And the basic tomato salsa flavorless! Otherwise, kids were ok with their food. Service was quick and courteous.
google avatar

Roberto Y.

Yelp
Good service, okay Tacos and good local beer. Nothing out of the ordinary. But a good place to grab something quick to eat. Easy parking which is a win in Carolina Beach. The chips were grease and a little bit stale. The tacos needed more flavor. Good combinations but the flavors were not there. The restaurant was a little dirty. There were dead flies on the window frame as well. This not a place I would go back.
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
I honestly have to say I went here out of desperation on a lunch break one afternoon -- I've wanted to return ever since. The prices were high when I was staring at the menu and the vibe inside wasn't blowing me away. I figured that they probably made respectable burritos because I'd seen the stickers literally everywhere, but I didn't have the world of expectations... I was delightfully wrong when I opened up the takeout bag and realized that it was a very sizeable burrito inside and it was packed with some amazing flavors. I also give credit to the staff for being incredibly helpful inside and patient with me throughout my order.

Yelp
My first experience at Flaming Amy's was years ago and it was amazing! I don't think I could find anything wrong! My food has always been good! The service and atmosphere is vibing and hip! My go to has been the Thai Mee Up oh my goodness it's so good it's an Asian burrito filled with Roasted red peppers, red onions, shredded carrots, rice, beans, cheese, Thai Peanut sauce, and your choice of Grilled Filling. I always add extra Thai peanut sauce! It's a bit hot and I love it! A nice cold one or a soda and I'm set! If you've not experienced Flaming Amy's I highly recommend stop, go in and this staple in the area! Everything is served hot and fresh and the salsa bar is awesome! I love the pineapple salsa just so good! Visitors and vacationers make a stop here as one of your places to eat. The prices are so reasonable and for the amount of food you get, you'll be astonished!

Tyler K.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Service was phenomenal! The vibe couldn't be any more perfect! You must give it a try and you'll definitely thank me later.
google avatar

Teresa M.

Yelp
We grabbed two jerk chicken burritos on our way to the beach and these were delish! They were super big and full and left us very satisfied. My only criticism is that I wish the chicken was cut up a little smaller and that there was a ton more jerk seasoning or flavor punch. Usually jerk chicken is very seasoned, almost blackened. I was missing that. But if it was just a chicken burrito, sure, it was fantastic! Also it wasn't super fast. The chips were great. I appreciate all of the different sauces. The Flaming Amy's sauce was the fan favorite. Also the sweet tea was awesome! The owner was super pleasant and staff was friendly!

Edward S.

Yelp
You get a lot of very nasty food. The worst Mexican Food I have had in a long time. Also the place needs a really good clean. The bathrooms were nasty.
google avatar

Peter G.

Yelp
When I first came to Wilmington the first place that was recommended was Flaming Amy's. I can't count the number of times that I have eaten at the location on Oleander and the FA Bowl on Shipyard. This was the first time I have eaten this location in Carolina Beach. Today I had the best, best, best burrito I have eaten ! I had the Notorious P.I.G. Cuban pork, Chorizo, bacon and cheese with a Sriracha slaw. As always the variety of salsas were fresh and very tasty ! I have driven from Fayetteville to Wilmington many times just to get FAB fix.
google avatar

Phani K.

Yelp
The place has great vibes and delicious food. The service is amazing. Staff cares for the custom orders (especially vegetarians). A must go place at Kure Beach
google avatar

Sharon C.

Yelp
I love Amy's! The food is always amazing and I love the local art as well. Flaming Amy's is an experience, not just a meal! I recommend the fried tofu burrito! It is so delicious!!! Ty!!!
google avatar

Yamira P.

Yelp
We came in hangry, and left full n happy! Everything we had was tasty and fresh, service was good and fast. A no-fuss place to visit if you want something fresh and fast. Great for families. Everything comes with tortilla chips and a salsa bar.
google avatar

Amy F.

Yelp
Cute little spot! You order at the window and your food comes out when ready! The burritos are HUGE!!! Loved the salsa bar and the chips while you wait. Truly enjoyed my strawberry frose as well!
google avatar

Curry H.

Yelp
It was pretty good, we went later in the night and it was summertime. The service could have been a bit better but overall good. I would do this as more of a lunch or to go place.
google avatar

Nilesh J.

Yelp
My kid goes - "my stomach hurts - but I don't regret it - because it was that good". That says it all. It even went to the level that - "why don't they have a flaming Amy in Raleigh - where we are from". Awesome place - good food, good ambiance. Not commercial feel at all. Nicely done. Look for the art in the wall!!
google avatar

Derek O.

Yelp
Great spot at Carolina Beach. Huge portions. Family of 6 left stuffed. Will definitely go back next year!!
google avatar

Anne W.

Yelp
I can't wait to go back and try more options. I had the Greek burrito and it was juicy and delicious. Basically a giant Greek salad wrapped up. There is a salsa bar so you can try all different ones with your free chips. The reason I didn't give 5 stars is because we had to ask multiple times for the beers we ordered with our food
google avatar

Tanya L.

Yelp
LOVE all Flaming Amy's .... I mean fried avocado ! Nachos are huge...order a half for one person. Always friendly and fast , fun vibe, economical but still great quality. Go , you won't regret it ...fast service, lots of options.

Christopher M.

Yelp
I retract my previous review. Biggest double wide burrito to date and fat tacos to match. Service was friendly as always and the food was delicious. Five stars.
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
I had the Baywatch burrito and it was delicious! We came as a group of 6 and had no problem finding a table. I loved the salsa bar. Delicious burritos
google avatar

Jo C.

Yelp
Great selections! If you can't find a burrito you like here? Then you do not like burritos! Mine had portabella as my grilled 'meat', carrots, black beans and rice with a peanut sauce. Totally perfect for a vegetarian option! They had multiple salsas to choose from for the free chips. My husband enjoyed his as well. I don't remember what he got but he ate the whole thing they are perfect portions and you leave full and happy. Their staff was friendly welcoming and helpful. Yay! Great experience!
google avatar

Ellaie V.

Yelp
It was very good. A lot of food, burrito is big enough for 2 adults. The only thing I wish they was a little more spicy or one of the sauces with extra spicy.
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
Delicious food and salsas from the salsa bar. Portions are plenty big...I had bring some home. Yay for lunch tomorrow!
google avatar

Kari S.

Yelp
Come hungry, burritos are enormous! Bottomless chips and salsa bar (try the pineapple jalapeño for sure) Got the large queso more than enough for family of 5 to share. Flaming Amy was good but not the intense heat anticipated. Fun spot! Fast service!Recommend
google avatar

Pierre A.

Yelp
Great Ambience, The service was excellent and the food arrived quick. Love the menu and the variety of options to choose from. Also for dine-in the salsa bar is amazing definitely worth checking out!
google avatar

Sheila S.

Yelp
Decent food, but not a comfortable restaurant. Friendly staff. If it's your first time there it's unclear about getting your own salsa for your chips and such. My husband and I shared a plate of nachos (nothing outstanding) and a Jamaican salad with jerk chicken (was good). Did enjoy the tea dispensers.

Lindsay S.

Yelp
Not good burritos at all. Definitely need more variety and taste profiles adjusted. Will not return.

DaNubCraft

Yelp
I've been to many Mexican restaurants. I've eaten a lot of Mexican food. I must preface this by saying that Moe's Southwest Grill is the golden peak of the mountain that all Mexican restaurants climb on their path to greatness. Burrito Shak lost its harness halfway up, and Chipotle was struck by a meteorite before it even made it to the mountain, but Flaming Amy's rised all the way to the top and marked it's place as a potential heir to burrito based restaurants once Moe's passes on. Flaming Amy's food is amazing. The burrito was large but not very pricey, there were bountiful amounts of chips, and they had endless fresh salsa. The service is almost equal in that regard. They tell you what you can or can't get, and then you either pick it or don't. There's no rigamaroll, just straight forward service. The building had many unrelated decorations about, but it all seemed fine. The building was covered in stickers.
google avatar

Yelp
I first experienced Flaming Amy's in Wilmington, at their flagship location. And it was about ... hrm... 10 years or more ago! But I always thought if I was back in Wilmington, I'd want to eat there again. Imagine my family's surprise to learn they opened a second location in Carolina Beach! We stayed at the Ft. Fisher Air Force Rec Area nearby (see my review of that) and just knew we had to visit this Flaming Amy's restaurant. My one and only caveat (hence the four stars instead of five) is ... waiting on line to order. I absolutely hate this part, and nothing will ever make me happy about it. But on to the food. Yum and YUM again!! Serve-yourself baskets of chips that are really tasty (Funny moment: a server dropped a whole tub of those in the kitchen, in full view of everyone on our side of the restaurant. She had the grace to laugh at herself as she swept them up. Thumbs-up!) They have a great salsa bar, where you can choose from about six types of salsas, also serve yourself. I don't actually recall prices because I was treated by family, but I believe they are on the reasonable side for how much food you get. Everyone in the family got something they liked, from quesadillas for the kids to combo plates for the grownups. My daughter's taco salad looked amazing! All of us took a little bit with us, because they give you so much. All in all, I'd say Flaming Amy's 2 is just as good as the original. Go! Eat! Enjoy!
google avatar

Scott J.

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Great service. You order at a counter so don't expect to get waited on. Still a great and quick place to grab a drink and some good food
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
I wanted "Mexican" for dinner. I remember a colleague, several years back, raving about Flaming Amy's. Since I was in the area, I decided to give Flaming Amy's a try. I ordered the Flaming Amy Burrito. It was supposed to be hot. I must have a definition of hot that is much different than what is on the menu. It provided a little heat after I added some Chipotle Tabasco sauce (PSA - Chipotle Tabasco is da bomb). The burrito was good, however, it was not the epic burrito that my coworker raved about. The salsa bar was ok/good. I suggest the jalapeno pineapple (I believe). A nice addition to the meal being part of the burrito order (nice value). This might be sacrilege, however, I still preferred Chipotle to FABB. That being said FABB was still good and I would come back again. Good food + Nice Price = VALUE and FABB provided this.
google avatar

Sam B.

Yelp
Flaming Amy's ruined my life, when they brought my silverware out, my spoon felt a little too heavy. I take a closer look and my spoons were cemented together by sour cream. This happened 6 years ago and I am still so traumatized that I felt compelled enough to leave a review tonight. When my food came out, I still gave it a try and it made me gag because I was so disgusted. If I could give negative stars I would:/
google avatar

Melinda L.

Yelp
Taco Tuesday is the best!!! Service is great, and the food is always good!!!! Best night to take the family out!!!
google avatar

Erin W.

Yelp
Flaming Amy's was our first pit stop once we hit the beach! They have an epic menu with crazy burritos no matter what mood you're in - classic burritos, insanely spicy , Asian inspired, Thai, etc I tried the Shrimp Makirito with fried shrimp, cucumbers, spinach, carrots, rice, teriyaki sauce and avocado wasabi salsa My husband loved the Po Boy - fried shrimp (added buffalo sauce!) lettuce, tomato, rice and jalapeño ranch. It has so much flavor!! I love that the have a FREE chips and FREE salads bar!! They have a large indoor area and a cute outdoor patio
google avatar

Carol W.

Yelp
This will definitely be a recurring destination when we are in the Carolina Beach area. Before we even got our food, they had me with the tunes - Green Day, Rise Against, etc. Hubby got the carnivore nachos which he really enjoyed. Kiddo got rice and cheese - one of his favs - he thoroughly enjoyed it at the restaurant and the rest for leftovers. I got the build your own burrito with grilled pork. My first impression on picking it up was how heavy! It was loaded with rice, cheese, pork, black beans, salsa and sour cream. I was on sensory overload with this being my first time here and didn't get any additional goodies. The burrito was yummy as is, but i would probably add at least some lettuce next time. The fresh salsa bar was a really nice touch and I did add more salsa - the fresh tomato and the corn & bean salsas. I'm a wuss when it comes to heat, so i stuck with the mild options. For any first timer here, i strongly suggest you grab one of the printed menus and sit down to decide on what you'll eat before ordering at the counter. Then menu is quite extensive and has lots of options, which can be overwhelming it you don't know what you want or if you have a kiddo bouncing all around you. Whatever you decide, the food was yummy and the leftovers were the perfect snack after coming off the beach.

Yelp
Called last night for a take out order about 7:30 was put on hold Drove there 15 minutes still on hold Walked in told her to take me off hold and placed order. Drive home missing burrito. Guess what? They close at 8:00 Frustrating!!!
