Portland, Oregon’s Best Breakfast Restaurants | Eater Portland

"This cozy Buckman cafe tops its chicken and waffles with bacon butter or hot chile honey, serves its baked French toast with maple creme anglaise, and bolsters its house-made corned beef hash with poblanos and perfect poached eggs. The cocktail menu is no afterthought, with a lengthy selection of spritzes and coffee cocktails." - Zoe Baillargeon

We got the chicken and waffles, breakfast and biscuits and gravy. Everything was delicious and the restaurant had lots of space and we didn't have to wait. Staff were really friendly and checked in on us intermittently. I would come back!

I've had this restaurant bookmarked for months and finally had a chance to stop in and check them out since I was in the area. Cute and clean little establishment with a small patio for outdoor seating. They also have a bar top you can sit at too. Parking lot is very small and super tight. We got there about noon and they were pretty busy. Menu is small and didn't really have much for me to choose from that I wanted. I ended up going with the special of the day which was their crab and shrimp cake Benedict and I'm so glad I went with that choice! It was sooooo good! We also got the chicken and waffles and prefer a side of bacon and an egg to go with it. It was the perfect portion and the chicken was juicy and moist, but the waffle was hard so that kinda threw it off. Would rate it a 3/5. Service was good but such a long wait for our food. We placed our order at 12:05 and finally got our food at 12:54... Overall we had a good experience, but we’ve never waited so long for food, even when it’s busy. Not rushing to come back only because there wasn’t tons of options on the menu that I wanted to try.

Google
Staff amazing! Drinks on point and the food was great! Half and Half Chicken and waffles is a must share! Those biscuits are legit and the gravy actually tastes like they make it in house not out of a package!

Google
We waited for over an hour, BUT it was 100% worth it and I'd do it again. The Spanish coffee was hands down one of the best coffee cocktails I've ever had. The French toast was mind blowing. I didn't love the biscuits and gravy personally, I would have liked more seasoning. The fried chicken (both options) were absolutely incredible. There's a lot to love here, and the service was amazing.

Google
Excellent breakfast! The Chilequiles special was delish!! Service was friendly and efficient, but as others mentioned, it was a long wait for food. About 40 minutes for a table, and another 30 minutes from placing the order to our meals arriving. But they were worth the wait!! Just don't be in a hurry. Enjoy the atmosphere and relax.

Hayley Stiles

Google
The reuben was absolutely AMAZING!!! Best reuben I've ever had. Eggs were lackluster, pale and without much flavor. Everything else was excellent. Service was a bit slow and they were out of a specific dish we wanted to order.

Andrea Miedecke

Google
My husband and I say at the bar. I ordered the chicken and waffles and a side of mac and cheese. I will dream about that mac and cheese! It was the best damn mac and cheese I've ever had! And the chicken and waffles was pretty good too. My husband said his was just ok. He had ordered the Honduran Baleadas. I wonder if they will doordash that mac and cheese to Medford!?

Elijah Steinbauer

Google
Had a great brunch at flattop. The wait wasn't very long and they called our cellphone when our table was ready. We ordered the loaded hashbrowns and a breakfast taco with a fancy name (sorry I forgot). They were both really good. My wife gave me some of the peppers to zip up the hashbrowns, which was a pro move. They have a lot of vegetarian and gluten free options which I appreciate. The service was great. Check this place out.

Yelp
This place is literally the best brunch place in Portland! The food is always so delicious and well seasoned and the environment is just so fun and welcoming! They always play really good music and the service is always so good! The owner of the place is so warm and welcoming! 10/10 recommend!

Yelp
Do you have hungry houseguests? Do you want to avoid Portland's usual 1,658 hour wait for breakfast or brunch? Then Flattop & Salamander is for you! PROS: --Plenty of seating (at least on a random Wednesday morning). We were able to claim a table for six with no wait. --Yummy food. Hubby ordered the chicken and waffle, which he much enjoyed. I had a delicious house-made corned beef hash. Our British guest was amazed at the portions. --Friendly and prompt service. --An actual parking lot! What is this magic? Wow. CONS: --None.

Yelp
Went here for brunch and upon arriving, we checked in and there was a bit of a wait for a table. The wait was about 15 mins. Once we were inside the restaurant, I found the restaurant staff to be friendly and on top of things. Drinks were kept full and the food didn't take long to come out. There is a parking lot for this restaurant along with the other establishments it is next to, and I didn't have a hard time finding parking. Would visit again.

Yelp
Impressive brunch cocktail list. We had kind of a long wait but there are other places to walk to nearby while you're killing time. I had the chicken and waffles, which was quite good. The waffle was nice and sturdy and stayed a little crunchy even with the maple butter syrup. My partners loaded hashbrowns were serious business. We took most of that dish home and I enjoyed it reheated the next day. Would be nice if you could join the waitlist online in advance. I'd have added another star for that.

Yelp
Fantastic food here at Flattop. I highly recommend the Honduran breakfast taco but add the fried chicken slices. That crispy texture does a lot, especially adds a kick of flavor. It tasted so good and filling. Each dish is great, but this one is special. Come early before it gets packed. They have great music playing in the background, but not too loud. The service is great and friendly at that. I'm curious about the lunch menu!

Yelp
Great restaurant with friendly service special waffle and fried chicken with sweet and sour sauce is pretty good

Yelp
Bit of a wait on the weekends doe brunch but id say it's worth it. Come hungry!! Their portion sizes are quite large and good for sharing. Their service is fast and friendly! I think their popular dish is the chicken and waffles. It did not disappoint! Sweet and savory and a little bit of heat if you choose the spicy chicken. Also bonus they have pitdoor dog friendly seating!

Yelp
I came here for a "boozy brunch" (for the first time) and had a great time. This restaurant is located in a plaza for easy parking and has plenty of seating inside with high ceilings that make it spacious. Service here is super friendly and easy-going. My boyfriend and I got two drinks (a bloody mary and an alcoholic hot chocolate) in addition to our mains: the Reuben sandwich and chicken & waffles with a side of mac n' cheese. Everything was delicious. I love how the chicken and waffles offered different syrups/seasonings on top of the classic plain chicken and maple syrup. I got the half-and-half and it was so so delicious (but definitely heavy for a breakfast). My boyfriend got the reuben and a side of mac n' cheese and it was also delicious. Although I enjoyed my chicken & waffles, his sandwich was so good I couldn't stop taking bites. Overall, amazing food and the drinks were pretty good too! Highly recommend.

Yelp
Sweet Christ. The chicken and waffles belongs on the Mount Rushmore of breakfast foods. It is a stomach full for sure, so come hungry, but leave happy. Also tried multiple other dishes and each of them were excellent. Pair it with great service, and you're in for a good time! Nice ambiance as well, with a cool vibe all around.

Yelp
Wow this place was busy for Sunday brunch! I got on the waitlist for 30 min wait and it was timed accurately. Our server took care of us immediately. We ordered a couple of cocktails and I wasn't too blown away by the drinks but it did the job. Our breakfast was delicious! The hash browns were crispy and jot, sausage was savory, the biscuits were buttery and eggs were perfectly cooked. I can see why it was so busy.
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered the chicken and Waffle with hot chili honey and lime with cilantro. Fried chicken and waffle was crispy and delicious, but was a little too sweet and not spicy enough. The waffle was drenched in syrup and was more sweet than I would prefer. I'd ask for the syrup on the side next time to control the sweetness and prevent the waffle from going soggy too quickly. Portion was generous. Service was great. The servers were attentive. Casual dining. Long wait (40 min+).

Yelp
A funky little restaurant in an nice strip mall. There is plenty of off street parking. As with so many new restaurants the noise level is off the charts. The servers are pleasant. When I really didn't like my breakfast sandwich they took it off the bill and brought me something else. That's good customer service. My partner's bacon and eggs were good. The eggs were perfectly cooked. The bacon was fine but nothing special. The jam is chunky, spicy, and had a nice tartness. My breakfast sandwich wasn't pleasant. 1st off, I can't fathom why any restaurant serves American cheese by default. Chatting with the manager,, apparently it is a guilty pleasure for some. You can ask for it to be changed. I had specifically asked for my egg not to be hard and it was overcooked. The bacon was hard. I ordered the granola and yogurt with blueberries to replace it and that was lovely. The manager checked back to make sure I was happy. They turned around a disappointing experience completely.

Yelp
Homey vibes. Each drink came in a different mug, I got the earl gray tea and offered to refill (tea not on menu but ask and they'll list what they have). Staff were friendly, we had a work brunch (6+ ppl) and great service! Loaded hash browns | when they say loaded, they do not play! I recommend pairing with hot sauce and ketchup French toast | not pictured, ate too fast, very rich and filling. I recommend sharing this :) Homey, Hash, Hearty!

Yelp
Vibrant yellow walls adorned with colorful pictures, a shelf of plants, and high ceilings with wooden beams create the intimate interior at Flattop and Salamander. There are 2 top and 4 top tables, as well as seats around the bar. My friend decided to order the Vegan Hash and the Biscuits and Gravy. The pepitas on the hash added a nice crunch on top of the sweet potatoes and avocado. Her biscuits and gravy were also delicious and came with crispy onion strings. I tried the Breakfast Sandwich and chose to add sausage and avocado. The fried egg was perfectly a bit runny allowing the egg to coat the sausage nicely. Flattop also serves a variety of boozy brunch drinks from mimosas, to bloody Mary's, to aperol spritz's, etc. Since we sat at the bar, our server was also the bartender, so service was not overly attentive, but still adequate. We had a delightful morning brunch.
google avatar

Sam F.

Yelp
The food was pretty good, but the service was slow and poor. We waited over 50 minutes to get our food. There seemed to be a long wait for tables, but that appeared to stem from how slow they served food and tended to customers.
google avatar

Yelp
You don't need to come in with a flattop hair cut to enter this wonderful establishment. The venue presents with a parking lot, so it is easy to access. And then you enter high ceiling with mirrors to make the vibe a larger than life place. It is very open, so it's a ton of fun to enjoy the view as well as the food. I ordered the chicken & waffles and the french toast. Both were delicious. The chicken was crispy, yet moist, which is perfect for a brunch time meal. The french toast bread was soooooo gooood. I would have liked more fruit as a counter balance to the bread, but that's just my personal preference for lots of carbs. I thought both of these dishes were amazing and filling.
google avatar

Yelp
Super hip great vibe - lots of choices - gluten free - breakfast - lunch. .... And ong a BAR!! Service a little slow but worth the wait

Aisha W.

Yelp
Disappointing. Ordered a Ruben - the rye bread was stale, corned beef was very bland and dry, sauerkraut and thousand island dressing lacked in taste & flavor. The only thing good on this plate were the fries!

Yelp
How have I never heard of this place?! I've been here twice in three weeks and I'm not against going back in the next week or two. Just the right vibes with excellent food. Special fan of the biscuits and gravy and the chicken and waffles.
google avatar

Yelp
there are at least three things to love about this restaurant: 1. You can have mimosas or other cocktails with your breakfast / brunch / lunch 7 days a week. 2. The service is very good here. Our server was attentive when needed and unobtrusive when we didn't. 3. The food is pretty good. Our party had different meals. I had the Rueben which was delish. Give it a shot.

Yelp
Amazing drinks, housemade food!! It's nice to have a place that does great breakfast and lunch. Thank you guys

Yelp
Food was good, service was good, it was better at the bar! On a Sunday morning at around 11:30 the estimated wait time was 45 mins for a table of 2 but ended up being about 20 mins which was nice. We were seated at the bar with the great bartender showing off her skills and making delicious drinks! We opted to try to chicken and waffles since that's what we are doing all over Portland and these were pretty good. Not the best so far but I did like the option of half n half and still think the original was my favorite. The only thing I realized I wasn't a fan of was the syrup being dropped on dish for me. I prefer to do it myself in increments because what I ended up with was extremely wet and soggy waffles that were saturated in syrup and I would have liked to have them been less soggy (only gripe). Other than that it was great!
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite brunch spot in Portland. My favorites are the basic breakfast plate with the sausage. All the ingredients on the plate and just so good. Also delicious- breakfast tacos, hashbrowns, and don't sleep on the mac n cheese.
google avatar

Joe T.

Yelp
Very good breakfast/brunch/lunch place. I had a Reuben w/house cured pastrami that was great. My partner had a wedge salad that was delicious. Friendly service and when I asked for extra pickles (cause they make those in house too) they brought me a bunch:). I like that!
google avatar

Brittani C.

Yelp
Ordered: -Chicken & waffle special (Thai special) -Breakfast burrito with bacon -Boozy Thai Tea with Rum Pro: -Breakfast burrito is bomb!! It was light, but generously loaded with fluffy eggs and crunchy bacon. The salsa was really good. -Chicken and waffle special was really good!! The chicken was crunchy, juicy and well seasoned -Really nice & attentive staff -Quick seating

Yelp
The three of us ordered 2 different breakfasts. Flour tortilla with avocado, poblano peppers and chicken. The helpful waitress said that they sell out of the tortillas every day. My table mate said it was excellent. Two of us ordered the french toast and were disappointed. It was cold and when I requested that it be microwaved was told they didn't have a microwave.

Yelp
Good vegetarian options. Nice ambience. Service was pretty on point. Not constantly checking in but attentive. Food came out promptly. Good brunchy boozy drinks.

Jacqueline K.

Yelp
The chicken and waffles and loaded hashbrowns were out of this world. Friendly service!

Dominique P.

Yelp
Food was really good and the environment is fun! We did however wait for a long time to get our food after we were seated. It was about a 45 minute wait... we looked around at the 11 tables inside and only 2 of them had their food. The food made it worth the wait!
google avatar

Leon A.

Yelp
Food and service were excellent! I had Reuben sandwich and my wife had chicken sliders. We will go back and try breakfast menu.

Yelp
Great options, great flavor, great ambience, great beverages. 'nuf said. I highly recommend this place for breakfast or brunch when in the area.

Joy G.

Yelp
The hubby and i ordered the corned beef hash and biscuits and gravy and a pineapple mimosa, the mimosa was really good, not too sweet, the poblano corned beef hash was BLAND, i dumped way more salt than should have ever been necessary and a lot of pickapeppa hot sauce just to make not bland, half the potatoes were crispy half were as white as could be, the biscuits and gravy were okay. The service was a bit slow but the server was nice. Ambiance is not great it felt kind of dirty like it needed a good thorough cleaning, and it was 90 degrees out and no a/c. We won't be going back.
google avatar

Danielle J.

Yelp
Perfect low key brunch and cocktails. Our server was so friendly and they were very kind to our little kids. Homemade biscuits and loaded hash browns were delicious.

Amanda K.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Staff was super friendly. Loved the vibe. Very chill and calm. 10/10 will come again. Waffles & chicken were amazing as well as the burrito. So flavorful and yummy!

Yelp
Great brunch place! Food is delicious, good service and vibes. Inside decoration is atheistic

Yelp
Chicken and waffles from God herself. Absolutely the best southern food in town. Amazing staff great vibe and STELLAR recipes

Yelp
Another amazing breakfast! Today's special was Shrimp & Grits - and spoiler alert - they were hands down the best I've ever had! And it was gorgeously presented as well. The grits were smooth and creamy and a great cheddar cheese flavor. All these things can be achieved with patience, care and a lot of fat (butter & cheese usually). But these grits didn't taste fatty at all - alchemy at work here. The was a generous amount of perfectly seasoned and cooked butterflied shrimp. The star of this show, though was the sauce. It had a dark orangey red color. It was nicely spicy and had an amazing depth of flavor. The kind of sauce that makes you want to chase it around the plate to get the last glorious drop. Definitely a must try!

C K.

Yelp
Dee-licious brunch! Solid food and drinks every time, in inner SE. If you haven't been, you're missing out! Go get you some tasty vittles!
google avatar

Yelp
FOOD WAS GREAT. I had the chicken sliders and they seemed small, but all in all they were quite filling. I actually prefer this size of slider than a huge burger/sandwich since it is much less messier. The chicken was on point and the fries were good enough for me to eat em all vegetarian burrito for a meat eater made her question her decision of meat, unfortunately can't give much feedback on that the egg, bacon, and hashbrown was on point food: customer service: our waiter was tentative to start off, but got progressively worse although business was getting less busier? we asked for the bill and 30 minutes later the waiters asks us how are food was? Be prepared to wait for a table ON THE WEEKEND, this brunch spot is fuego! 2nd time around-- we came on a weekday, which was much less busier so we were automatically seated. Unfortunately, this time around, the breakfast sandwiches edges came burnt which was quite unappetizing for my guest who would not ask for a remake. The chicken and waffles are the best I've ever had; for this reason, I'll be giving 5 stars.

Yelp
My friends and I came here for our first brunch in Portland after walking past it on our way for coffee earlier in the morning. The wait staff were super accommodating. My one friend was insistent on some kind of pitcher or group shared drink and they kindly accommodated the request despite nothing being ordered on the menu. We started with a round of margaritas and then moved onto our own individual cocktails after, all which were delicious in their own right. I went with the unencumbered which was perfectly refreshing with the subtle flavors of the tequila without the burn. For food we ordered a variety across the menu. I went with the chicken and waffles with hot chili honey, lime and cilantro. The lime flavor was a little more overpowering than I expected but the fluffiness of the waffles and friend chickens quality made up for it. Two of my friends also got the chicken and waffles with the maple bacon butter and loved it. They also split the loaded potatoes and macaroni and cheese which were cooked to cheesy perfection. My last friend ordered the Honduran baleadas and really enjoyed them. We definitely ordered more food than we needed but we're happy with all of it. Service was friendly, food was fairly quick and I'd recommend it. We went Saturday around noon and surprisingly didn't have to wait for a table.

Yelp
04/09/2022: 4.5 out of 5 - Saturday Run Group was hungry after today's run training. So, we all agreed on Flattop & Salamander! They were great, and able to accommodate our group. Meg was our server she was wonderful in providing fast and friendly service. She remembered us, and poured on the coffee. Meg made the morning more warmer for us. The food came, and it was just spot on delicious! One thing I noticed that I forgot to mention last time was, the eating utensils were not just only clean...but polished! Such great attention-to-details that makes this eatery a top-notch eatery to enjoy delicious pleasantries. I believe we are going to be regulars here. I hope Flattop & Salamander can accommodate my running group because there are more of the foodie runners who couldn't make it for brunch. Do check Flattop & Salamander if you ever get a chance. It's worth a try, and you can decide for yourself. Enjoy! 03/12/2022: 4.0 out of 5 - Went out for a run today in Milwaukie, and the group wanted to try a new place we heard about. So, here we were at Flattop & Salamander for brunch (we were told that breakfast and lunch is served all day) in Portland area. Upon entering, the staff were quick to address and get us seated. We definitely came in at a good time before the rush. Every one of the staff were friendly and attentive, which obviously makes a more enjoyable experience as new patrons. The establishment is kept very clean. The tables were nicely spaced with clean chairs. The bathroom is kept but can be better. I do often check out the vents above at every eatery I go to, which were very clean at Flattop & Salamander. I did my usual "go-to" breakfast test by getting the Biscuits & Gravy with a side of sausage, and coffee. I noticed what looked like a "Chalkboard Menu" but there were no specials or anything edible listed. The coffee was a good blend. Doesn't seem like the staff can get enough of it around. Maybe not brewing fast enough, but it would have been nice if the staff kept coming around to check instead of us always asking. Regardless, it may be different on other days. Now, my Biscuits & Gravy was good. What made it more interesting was it being topped with onion crisp. First for me, but it was a nice touch. The house-made sausage gravy was tasty. I was able to sample the other dishes that the other "Foodie" runners had ordered; Chicken & Waffles with Bacon Butter, Honduras Baleadas, and Vegan Hash with a side of Bacon. All were good. All in all, at the end of any meal I often will ask, "Would you come back?" My answer if given the opportunity? Most likely since the staff are great, the food and drinks are tasty, and the establishment doesn't partake in any form of discrimination. I would like to try several other menu items next time around. So, as I always say, if you ever get a chance, definitely try it once and decide for yourself. Enjoy! Note: Even though the masking requirements for indoor spaces have been lifted, there are establishments still requiring masks and COVID cards, it was nice to see this eatery in the greater Portland area not requiring masks or COVID cards. It's a great to see Flattop & Salamander not partaking in any of the Social Discrimination Policies that some restaurant owners/management are choosing to still do.

Yelp
Wow!! Saw this in TikTok and decided to come for a birthday breakfast. Perks is there is a parking lot so parking is a breeze. Inside is very cute and has an almost southern charm. It has a very intimate charm to it. The business has a cute name, and has some education behind the name on the blackboard inside. Their drinks are truly fresh, and blended to order. I recommend the grapefruit juice! The chicken and waffles are fantastic. The waffles were made perfectly. The breakfast burrito is to die for. The homemade salsa is something I'd buy just on it's own. (If you ever sell this please let me know) I did a bacon and avocado burrito and it was finished quickly. The menu boosts with vegan options so it's accommodating for diets. I drove from a ways away to check this place out and I'm happy to say I'll return!

Yelp
Came here after a hard night of partying. Needed something that was gonna help the hangover and we couldn't have picked a better spot!! I was immediately drawn to the special which was a spicy breakfast sandwich and my sister got the chicken and waffles. I can't wait till I have to go back to Portland so I can come back and try other things on the menu!

Yelp
Very good food. Super nice people. What's unique is the food is exceptional and extra and the people aren't pretentious at all. Just a lovely spot. Like the old days. I had corned beef hash. Layers and layers of flavor. It was incredible. Egg was cooked perfect. Table had various things and all was liked. Cocktails were good. Homemade everything. French toast was very nice. Took three hours to get brunch done, but it was pride parade day and honestly, that's how Portland Brunch goes at the best places in town on an event weekend. Always has been this way. They are a boutique place with a small staff and flavors you can't get anywhere else. Server kept checking in and making jokes. Kitchen was working hard to keep up. Prices make sense for the quality. All things considered, I feel like this is a 5 star top spot in Portland Metro.

Yelp
Talk about a Hot & New business. This "boozy brunch" spot opened in mid-Jan 2022 off SE Morrison and 14th. Open 7:30-3 every day, they serve exactly what you'd expect: a double-sided menu full of good breakfast and lunch meals, and another double-sided menu of cocktails great for mornings or anytime of day, really. Having a free parking lot is nice, so when you roll up for brunch with your friends you don't need to circle the block five times. Options for seating include at the bar, four-tops and two-tops, and some stools along the front window. Tall ceilings, bright yellow paint, a few plants, and art from local artists round out the decor! Classic breakfast items on the menu, many of which are marked clearly as able to be made vegetarian and vegan. I ordered the breakfast sandwich for $13 (with tempeh, though avocado, bacon, and sausage were options), a side of hashbrowns for $3 (huge for that price!), and a Spanish coffee for $13 (because why not?). Everything was great - the drink hit the mark for boozy and drinkable, the egg was perfectly runny, and the hashbrowns were solid. Service was friendly and quick. Welcome to Portland, Flattop & Salamander!
google avatar

Marc F.

Yelp
Are you going to Salamander? Flattop, sage, rosemary and thyme Remember me as one who Yelps there Simon once sung a Garfunkel rhyme Tell her to make me Honduran Baleadas Scrambled eggs, Frijoles, and Lime Whiskey Breakfast or Cider on Tap Then she'll be a true love of mine Tell her to find me Vegan Hash Tempeh day and Tahini time Between Poblanos and Sweet Potatoes Then she'll be a true love of mine Tell her to drizzle the Chili Honey Maple Bacon and Chicken Waffle And gather it all in a brunch hereafter Then she'll be a great place to dine

Yelp
Stumbled upon this gem for a late breakfast (which they serve all day!) and it did not disappoint. Our server Alex really made the experience a memorable one. As a fellow server, I'm always appreciative of good service, and Alex's cheerful presence went above and beyond. Ps. Get the breakfast burrito with fried chicken!

Kim K.

Yelp
Great place with good food. People are nice. Breakfast food all day. Don't need a reservation

Yelp
Perfect breakfast after a late night. Breakfast cocktails, good coffee, wonderful interesting menu. The server was really friendly and kind too. I couldn't resist the Honduran baleadas, since I'd never seen them on a menu before, my sweetheart had the biscuits and gravy. Fantastic all round.
