Thank God the food is good! Because that is all this restaurant has going for it.
I am sorry to say that I picked badly tonight when looking for an impromptu place to eat. All my faves were crowded, with long lines of hungry people waiting for tables. This place was right next to Il Canale which of course had throngs of people waiting to be called. Flavio's, however, was empty, absolutely empty. I was tired of walking so we said to each other "well, let's try it!"
There was something wrong immediately when they walked us into the dining room. Uncomfortably big and open without enough privacy between tables. It seemed more like a bar that had live music on the weekends than a Georgetown restaurant. The decor was definitely lacking too. Think college dorm room trying to be something it just ain't. The age and condition of the tables and decorations also need updating or fixing or just throwing away. The sugar and sweeteners were stuck together. Our server just shrugged her shoulders like they were supposed to be stuck together.
Anyway, we were already committed and, as I said, we had walked for blocks and were tired. We jumped in with both feet (which is kind of how the dining room smelled).
Anyway, the server was, well - as noted above - awkward. And when I say awkward, I mean, weird. Like your friend's new girlfriend who snorts when she laughs and wears old dirty jeans ALL THE TIME. Think theater major waiting for her 1st major break at a live theater. She was not very verbal and could only respond to direct questions although, I am sad to say, she was not able to answer the simplest questions about the menu or the food. The questions she DID answer??? Her answers were wrong. "Sorry, I guess we are out of anchovies." "Sorry, I didn't know the fryer wasn't working." "No, we can't make what I just told we could do." And slow too on top of weird. Bad combo.
But the caesar salad (sans the anchovies that we had definitely wanted) was delicious. Crisp fresh romaine lettuce. And the dressing had that perfect balance of olive oil and lemon. We both loved that salad.
My spaghetti bolognese was good. Lots of olive oil for the meat to luxuriate in. Nice meaty consistency. To be honest, the vast majority of the bolognese sauce was hidden at the bottom of the bowl, underneath the spaghetti. Yet another example of poorly trained employees delivering what were otherwise good products.
My spouse had a margarita pizza and he liked it a lot. The crust was charred in just enough places but, underneath, chewy and yeasty. The toppings were generous.
Is there a reason to come back to Flavio's? Decidedly no. What a shame because the food is actually worth a 2nd shot. However, I cannot give it another chance based upon the service and the decor.
So, my recommendation is go next door to Il Canale and wait in line for food AND service that will impress you.
