The 11 Best Cocktail Bars In Manchester - Manchester - The Infatuation

"It can be hard to remember that Manchester ever sees the sun during the long winter months when you might as well be living underwater. But when the sun comes out, there’s no place more blessed than Ancoats’ New Islington Marina and nothing better to do than to drape yourself on the bank with a glass of fiercely natty wine from Flawd, the walk-in-only wine bar where the team behind renowned bistro Higher Ground worked out their restaurant aspirations. Go for their jazz nights on Thursdays and fight the fear that you don’t belong at the cool kids’ table: the staff are as friendly as their accessible by-the-glass list." - becky cooper

I hadn’t visited Flawd before - a wine bar on New Islington marina - however, we heard there was a special tomato celebration. Tomatoes?! Hell yes. I have rarely left a wine bar feeling as nourished. The tomato fest was insane. Fresh, ripe and grown locally. The other fresh vegetable dishes knocked me for six too. Especially with the romesco sauce. Bang. So, coupled with an extensive (and in parts, a little challenging!) wine selection the whole the gig was spot on. I also learned that Flawd is owned by the good people of Higher Ground. Class. Go, but I can’t guarantee the tomatoes will be on. But, so what?

Probably one of my favorite discoveries in Manchester. Flawd is a place of life nestled on the edge of the canal, relaxed atmosphere and terrace by the water. The place is beautiful and the selection of natural wines is on point. I love it!

Very friendly staff. Great beers. Daughter and I needed a few hours to work on both our laptops over a few drinks. Another venue had strict 'no laptop' policy, they lost our custom. Staff here gave us password to their Guest WiFi and we sat in a corner doing our work. Priceless. Great service and I will remember to go there again.

Beautiful Georgian wines today. Food with Georgian ingredients was wonderful. Great service and tasting notes too! Thanks!

👎Unwelcoming and Discriminatory Treatment Came to Flawd during the Manchester Jazz Festival, excited to enjoy some live music. While the staff at the bar were initially friendly and the rosé wine I ordered (two glasses for £17.85 – quite pricey) was decent, the experience quickly turned sour. Because the venue was full, the staff suggested we stand near the entrance. We weren’t the only ones — many people were standing or sitting outside on the chairs placed by the bar. However, a staff member (a woman with long black hair and blunt bangs, dressed entirely in black) came up to my boyfriend and me, very sternly telling us that we were not allowed to drink outside😅 When I politely asked why, she repeated my question in a mocking tone and told us again — quite rudely — that it was “the rules.” We felt singled out and unwelcome. I couldn’t help but notice I was the only Asian woman standing outside, while others were allowed to enjoy their drinks with no issue. This double standard left a very bad taste. 👎Whether it was personal bias or poor communication, it ruined what should’ve been a fun night. I won’t be returning, and I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone looking for a warm and inclusive atmosphere!!! Shame!!!

Flawd was my very first stop on my very first trip to Manchester and it was the perfect introduction to the city. The vibe is fantastic, the selection of natural wines is incredible and the menu of small plates is expertly curated and executed, and oh so delicious! Many of the ingredients are locally grown on a farm managed by the owners. A great experience overall. I will definitely be back!

Great wine selection, very friendly /helpful staff, and gorgeous spot by the canal. Perfect place to sit outside to have a couple glasses and some small plates on a sunny day!

Had a (super) quick plate of food and a beer & will definitely be heading back for more. It’s tiny but has decent outside seating and occupies a lovely spot on the marina - it’s amazing to see how this area has really settled into being its own thing. The place is clearly the work of people that care for and love the products they serve and environment in which they work: service was genuinely friendly and the food was excellent in a way that showed care and understanding for the ingredients. You couldn’t for much more from a neighbourhood business, and it was a real pleasure to visit.
