The Best Restaurants Near Smith, Amherst, Mount Holyoke, and Hampshire | Eater

"A working dairy since the late ’90s, Flayvors of Cook Farm is perhaps best known for ice cream, made and sold right on the property. Order a few scoops or a pint to enjoy with friends at one of the outdoor picnic tables just feet from the farm’s cows grazing against the panoramic backdrop of the Hadley hills. Flayvors is one of the few purveyors of raw milk in the area; it’s worth grabbing a gallon on your next visit." - Nat Belkov

Flavors of Cook Farm lives up to the hype! The ice cream is top-notch—super creamy, rich, and full of flavor. I tried one of their ice cream tacos, and it was a fun and delicious twist on a classic treat. The waffle shell was crisp, and the mix of toppings made it extra enjoyable. The setting adds so much to the experience—you can see the cows right there on the farm, which makes it feel really connected to where the ice cream comes from. It’s a great place to relax and enjoy a treat with friends or family. Everything from the quality of the ice cream to the friendly atmosphere makes this place worth the visit every time. Highly recommend!

Google
Working farm with homemade ice cream, beautiful place too watch the sun go down while watching the grazing animals and enjoying a sweet treat. Variety of traditional flavors as well as some originals. Request a small taste test before deciding! They are all so delectable! Young staff all very friendly and helpful. Make sure you leave a tip because they certainly work extra hard when the lines get long. Interesting history posted on a huge board outside tells us the story of the family’s original cow that inspired the ice cream, named Flayvor.

Google
Great ice cream place right on the farm. They had a large number of flavors. The orange cream was yummy. I was not brave enough to try the dill pickle ice cream. I heartily recommend the ice cream here!

Google
Delicious ice cream and beautiful location. It is a great place to bring the family too. You are allowed to feed straw to the cows.

We dropped off one child, then went to Interskate 91 to skate but I was told I would have to pay $10 just to sit at Interskate 91 to watch my child skate. Nope. So we left and ultimately ended at Flayvors that day since my daughter had a gift card from her 11th birthday for 11 dollars! She treated! We all enjoyed an ice cream even though that whole area smells like cow poo. I don’t remember what flavor or FLAYVOR the others had but I had the COFFEE GROUNDS flayor which was a combination of coffee ice cream and oreo cookies. It was really good. One of the best flavors I’ve had and I’ve enjoyed many many ice cream flavors. This was unique. The line was long and the day was beautiful and it wasn’t too chilly which probably was why it was so busy. Busy ice cream places must mean the place is good. The staff was very friendly and they were so fast. I don’t think ice cream is considered fast food but that was soooo fast. We literally paid with the gift card, moved to pick up window and boom, our cones came out. Plus, my daughter still has a dollar left on her card! Nice!

We happened upon this place after walking around the Silvio O Conte trail nearby right as the sun was setting. We had a strawberry and a mint chip milkshakes and watched the sun set over the cow pasture! Perfect end to our evening! Thanks so much for the great milkshakes!

Google
I love getting ice cream here year round! And I especially enjoy trying their seasonal flavors. Also their peppermint stick flavor is great, and that's one that can be hard to find these days. The cows are a cute bonus.

Google

Yelp
Another one of my requests on my visit to Massachusetts. Cook farm was the home to my daughter in laws great grandparents. Old family history. The menu is giant. I couldn't make up my mind, although I am sure you can't go wrong. I didn't take pictures because I chose to spend a moment with a cow eating my ice cream. We became great friends. Fantastic experience. Roadside stop. Easy parking. Eating delicious ice cream with the cows. I would be here quite often if I lived nearby.

Yelp
First time here. Great selection of flavors. Fun little shop where you can buy pints, quay, eggs, meat. It's a working farm so the kids will love getting close to the cows. And so will the adults! The ice cream is very good but not as high in fat as some other homemade ice creams I'm used to. So, it tastes a bit "light", which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Yelp
This is a beautiful little farm to visit the cows and calves that make the delicious ice cream. Depending on the day you can even play around with their chickens. Staff have always been friendly and patient. It's a gorgeous place to spend a few hours and enjoy the view. However, it being a farm prepare to see and smell the reality of it. Would love to come again the next time I'm in the area!

Yelp
You can just taste the freshness of their ice cream. So many flavors and options. Customer service was excellent. Ordered the java chip and coffee oreo combined. SO GOOD. Love how the ice cream shop is dedicated to the mother cow named flayvor. The farm was able to produce all the ice cream thanks to her bloodline. Great story.
google avatar

Yelp
Fresh tasting ice cream and sorbets. They let you sample. Don't follow gps, wait until you see the huge Flayvors sign, then pull in. Otherwise, you'll be pulling into a dirt road.
google avatar

Briana L.

Yelp
There's so many ice cream flavor options! They even had my favorite, ginger ice cream, available which I was so excited for because I don't know where else offers it. The Cookie Monster was also very delicious with both Oreos and cookies & cream in it. I loved being able to see the cows eat nearby as well
google avatar

Yelp
Such a cute place to go get ice cream and chill. It's right on a farm with plenty of parking. So many flavors and they keep churning out new seasonal ones as well. They even let you interact with the cows. Such a great spot to just wind down and decompress. Don't forget to leave a tip.

Yelp
The absolute best ice cream in the area. And you get mooos, not Muzak, for ambience.

Yelp
Flayvors of Cook Farm has some of the FRESHEST ice cream I have ever had! All the milk in the ice cream comes right from the cows here and you can really taste the QUALITY with each delicious and creamy lick! They have various flavors which rotate based on availability. I am generally not a fan of unique flavors and stick to basic flavors wherever I have ice cream but I will say I make an exception for the BLACK RASPBERRY flavor. I have not tasted anything similar in any other ice cream shops yet! In addition to ice cream, they have some pre-made foods, fresh meat and even get raw milk here. If ice cream is not your thing, you can still come here to get up close with the chicken and cows roaming around or just sit outside and enjoy the countryside and mountain views of Western Massachusetts! In fact, some might say that's the main attraction, and the ice cream is secondary... ;)

Yelp
Used to be my favorite ice cream in the area. Not any more. The ice creams seem much sweeter than I remembered. We don't live in the area, only get here a few times a year so changes are pretty obvious. On the other hand, we are avid ice cream eaters, travel lots and always seek out local good ice cream. Not impressed with weird flavors, mix-ins, etc. etc. To paraphrase Joe Friday (that's a reach for many): "the ice cream, ma'am, just the ice cream". There is better ice cream in the area. One place just around the corner.

Yelp
Long overdue review of my favoriteeee ice cream place in the Amherst area. Even though it is sort of off the beaten path it is super popular among locals and college students because it is so special. Super fresh and creamy ice cream and I've loved every flavor option I've tried. This is a must goooo if you're around!
google avatar

Alexandra C.

Yelp
Very good, fresh tasting ice cream in a nice, scenic area with cows for the littles to see. Worth a visit!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a great local farm to get really good fresh ice cream. The flavor choices are excellent and the ice cream is delicious. They even offer Woofer sundaes for your favorite pup.
google avatar

Trinh H.

Yelp
Even though I literally come here to visit their cows and chickens, I will have to admit that their ice cream is pretty good too. This is an awesome little ice cream shop to satisfy your sweet tooth! They have tons of flavors and all of their ice cream is made in-house. I got an oreo milkshake that last time I went and that was amazingggggg. I definitely recommend stopping by here with your family or friends. Sit down on one of their picnic tables and watch the sunset. It's the perfect way to end a great day.

Yelp
I ate Cookie Monster ice cream. Think about that for second. Cookie. Monster. Ice. Cream. i was so happy. The Cookie Monster is vanilla ice cream dyed blue with I believe chocolate chips and cookie dough. I am not 100% certain because I was in too much bliss to remember exactly. You can enjoy your ice cream inside or stroll about the farm to check out the cows. I recommend staying inside to avoid the strong smell of dung (its a farm people!). Kids will like seeing the cows afterwards. If you're lucky you'll catch the farmers feeding the baby cows.

Yelp
Ice cream during off-season? This place is a MUST! Ice cream is so creamy and staff are friendly and welcoming. I recommend going once a week!

Merle B.

Yelp
I must have written a review sometime in the past many years (since they opened) that I've been going to Cook's Farm for ice cream and occasionally other local farm products (especially Cook's Farm eggs). But it's still my favorite ice cream east of the Connecticut River. I agree with those who said Inez was both unusual and delicious, and I regularly order the small ice cream cake for a good friend's birthday using Inez with any of the chocolate flavors and raspberry jam between them. But my go-to flavor is the Black Raspberry Chip frozen yogurt. I'm probably deluding myself that it's lower calorie than the regular version, but I get it more often than I probably should, and it always hits the spot. Usually I try one of the seasonal specials when they come out--always fun and sometimes over the top tasty. I love the ginger and the peanut brittle, and my husband waits all year for the peach made from local peaches in August. Oh, and when my vegan nephew and niece visit, they're always pleased when I pull a pint of one of Flayvor's sorbets out of the freezer.

Yelp
The El Gordo is a great option If you were to go with a group of 3 or 4 people and share! The brownie sundae included 2 scoops of fresh seasonal ice cream (I got coffee) along with 2 toppings (fudge & walnuts), whipped cream and a (I opted out of the whipped cream and ) it was huge in quantity and could be eaten as a meal in itself. The small sundae was the same as the brownie sundae, just without the brownie.

Yelp
I am a professional chef, my first job was in Holyoke at the log cabin. From there I went to the busiest restaurant in the country the Hard Rock Cafe. Them I got an apprenticeship at the Beverly Hills Hotel. I've worked in four-star restaurants in Michigan right at restaurants all over the country. Barnett this is the best ice cream on the planet it's absolutely fabulous. The owners are really sweet, and it's a great place to get Rawmilk. And you can tell us as a family favorite. Fridays and Saturdays and Sundays she's a grandmother's with grandparents kids with their grandfather is in their dads. It's a real bite of americana. If you'd like americana if you don't like America to stay away

Yelp
My wife and I. Would visit this place often. Very family friendly. The ice cream is incredible delicious I have the highest honors for this place. You also can get your milk here and the service is excellent. We just visited cooks farm July 1 st at 2:30 in the afternoon. I have to say I rated this real high two yes ago when we lived here. To my dismay I was disappointed when I first arrived went inside to order my sundae a cardboard note on the counter said all ice cream orders outside. First of all that was very non customer friendly second when I went outside four other people who came after me were in line with one worker taken orders. Also we used to get more for our money as l bought the largest one and it was very small for what you pay. Ice cream was good but service not so. I have moved this to a three.

Yelp
I was so excited to go to Flayvors for their Ice Cream for Breakfast this morning! I thought it was a little crazy because it was - 9 degrees outside, but....you only live once! We arrived and our food was waiting at the counter. Minus the sausages we'd ordered and paid for. They did finally provide them after I asked. We'd ordered toppings of syrup for the 3 French Toast and strawberries for the waffles. Each topping was provided in a 1/2 inch plastic container - approximately 2 Tablespoons. When I asked for an additional topping container - the charge was $1 each. Even 4 tbl. For 3 dry French toast was not sufficient to make the meal edible. 2 tbl of strawberries was also inadequate for hard, dry waffles. My dining companion left 3/4 of her breakfast on the plate. Dry French Toast was too much even for her to swallow. What could have been a lovely annual tradition became a very disappointing experience. $1 for 2 tbls of syrup was pretty much the worst I've seen. I recommend either: eat breakfast elsewhere, or bring your own syrup and toppings. Amazing! Not in a good way!

Misty H.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream, lots of flavor options, including several unique flavors (ginger, asparagus...) served in a farm setting. Karen's coffee grounds is a great choice! *no dairy free (logical considering the setting is a dairy farm)
google avatar

Taylor B.

Yelp
Ambience is awesome! I loved the inside. The ice cream was pretty good but I think the ambience makes it taste even better. I ordered the smores flavor and it basically just tasted like chocolate ice cream. I would come again but I would get a different flavor. Overall it's definitely work a try but it's not a place that I would make my regular go-to spot.
google avatar

Andy L.

Yelp
If there's a chance to eat ice cream and look at cows while you're doing so, then you should hop on that chance. That's exactly what my girlfriend and I did at Flayvors. The ice cream was definitely fresh and refreshing and it was made just that much better to be able to look at the cows that pretty much made the ice cream.
google avatar

Lily F.

Yelp
The farm is super lovely and scenic, and the ice cream is good. I just wish there were more vegan options, as the 2 sorbets are both not very good. The lemon isn't zingy at all and tastes artificially flavored. The raspberry is also not very zingy, but does taste better than the lemon. Still a cute spot, but avoid those sorbets, or try them out first.
google avatar

Nicole L.

Yelp
I came here all the time when I was still in college. It's far enough that you feel like you can get away from campus and enjoy the view, the peacefulness and delicious ice cream. And its also close enough that its just a 15 minute car ride from campus! The staff is always wicked friendly and their serving sizes are so good!! My favorite here is the cookie monster, but they have a pretty extensive ice cream menu. I love the seating because you get to sit outside and look at the cows at the farm next door. Its amazing!
google avatar

Floyd T.

Yelp
Still great ice cream but the setting is rustic. Makes for a good farm like experience. It is smooth and delicious like our local ice cream at Moo Thru in Remington VA. We enjoyed three flavors with chocolate almond chip my fav.

Hildy A.

Yelp
Super creamy and delicious. What a great find--totally different from regular ice cream you might get at the store.
google avatar

Yelp
We like this place, many options on GF Ice-cream , GF waffle cones and a few GF savory food options. We usually get the Gluten Free Mac and Cheese until today when we got a cup with WAY over cooked noodles to a mush/paste. They have them precooked (makes sense) but they start with an over cooked macaroni that get reheated in the microwave for the final collapse of the pasta and the cheese! Very unfortunate.

Steve L.

Yelp
This is fresh ice cream in a wonderful setting. Trying three of their special flavors while looking at the cows grazing on a cold afternoon is a novelty for me. It is just an important piece of Americana. Now for the product--- this is so special because the ice cream feels and tastes fresh-- and the flavors are creative-- tried maple chip, strawberry cheesecake and Girl Scout cookie flavor-- and loved all three. Every little bit needs to be finished carefully because it is great to last taste. This is one place to visit and unique in many ways. With any detour.
google avatar

Lisa S.

Yelp
Incredible ice cream. You can taste how fresh it is. The staff was wonderful and answered all of my questions! It was a beautiful place to eat after getting engaged to the love of my life. We Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Ivan L.

Yelp
Had my first taste of ice cream here and I'll definitely be back. Asparagus on the cone is amazingly tasty! It's got some crunchy nuts within, and you can see remnant shreds of asparagus throughout too. Take your ice cream and sit at the benches scattered out back, take in the farm and quiet scenery. It's pretty tranquil
google avatar

Heather W.

Yelp
This is one of the neatest places to get ice cream. It is sort of in the middle of nowhere and yet everyone knows where this is because it's sandwiched between Roads that people like to bike on, popular hiking areas, and in a scenic place to drive by. I am very impressed at how they have been operating during COVID-19 regulations, as they are efficient, organized, and safe. They do take credit cards, so that makes it easy so that you do not have to handle cash with the person at the counter. They continue to have some delicious unique homemade ice cream flavors, and offer a wonderful doggy dish. One of the things I really like about their unique flavors, is that they don't all have to have a bunch of cookies, or candy, or brownies to make them interesting. I'm not really looking for a sundae within my ice cream scoop, or, I might just order a sundae. This place is definitely worth a stop if you're driving by. If you see a line, don't worry, they are safe and quick about getting people through.
google avatar

Emily J.

Yelp
This place was packed considering we're in a pandemic, but I'm so glad they were open! Everyone I saw in line was wearing a mask so I felt safe joining in. The orange mango ice cream I had was delicious and my boyfriend loved his Cookie Monster cone as well. Come for the delicious ice cream and stay a little longer for the beautiful view and the fun cows!
google avatar

Jessica T.

Yelp
Down the street from my Dad's house. So so incredibly good - I compare all other local shops to this one and Flayvors can't be beat. The butter crunch in a sugar cone is the absolute best.
google avatar

Thao L.

Yelp
Perfect place for some ice cream, plenty of tables, good flavor selection and beautiful view
google avatar

Karen A.

Yelp
I was dying for some old-fashioned ice cream stand like I was able to have all the time when I was younger growing up in NJ. We found this dairy on Yelp and had to try it. My craving has been satisfied!!! This was the best hit fudge sundae I have had in some time!!! I had pistachio (my fav) and it did not disappoint. My husband had coffee ice cream with bits of Heath bar. We sat outside on a picnic table among wandering chickens and feeding cows. Such a wonderfully satisfying nostalgic experience. I will def be back when in the area again! Yummy!!!!
google avatar

A.M. M.

Yelp
Great ice cream. Lot's of flavors. The line moves quickly. And you get the smell of cow manure for free
google avatar

Lucy S.

Yelp
Tastiest ice cream in the area. Lots of fun flavors to choose from, and you can pet the cows when you've finished your ice cream. My favorite is the Cookie Monster: blue vanilla with cookie dough and Oreo pieces. Great spot to watch the sunset!!
google avatar

Elle V.

Yelp
Flayvors has awesome ice cream. Last summer my granddaughter was visiting and we went so often she thought getting in the car meant going for ice cream and checking out the caves. They serve some other things but I come for ice cream...and raw milk. I love making fresh mozzarella cheese and Flayvors has raw, unpasteurized milk.
google avatar

Jacquie M.

Yelp
I really hope I come back here soon. What a great place and so thankful for Yelp because that's how I found it. Beautiful view, up close with the animals, great ice cream and friendly staff. I have been ranting and raving about this place to everyone I know. Beautiful and fun! Can't wait to come back. I wish I could give you more than 5 stars!
google avatar

Kris H.

Yelp
Really good flavors of ice cream, can get one scoop or multiple scoops, sundaes, smoothies, and they have a store with eggs, milk, etc. we got sandwiches, chips and sodas for lunch. Rainbow sherbet, Cookie Monster (vanilla ice cream dyed blue with cookie dough and Oreos mixed in) and Inez (coconut ice cream with almonds and chocolate chips), all were delicious!!!

Jason L.

Yelp
I got some raw milk for my coffee...very good. Also got some ice cream...full of artificial flavors, colors, preservatives and all kinds of additives? So surprised....yuck.
google avatar

Kyle P.

Yelp
Why aren't you here? Seriously. If you eat ice cream, get here. You can eat amazing ice cream AND thank the cow that gave them milk for the ice cream. Stay for a bit. Try them all. None of them will disappoint. Arguably, the best, creamiest, smoothest ice cream I have eaten - and I've eaten quite a bit.
google avatar

J. H.

Yelp
We stopped here for ice cream on our way home from a drive through the countryside in the Berkshires and Western MA. They have 24+ homemade flavors of ice cream and frozen yogurt, including their 2 signature flavors, Ginger & Inez, which are named after the 2 cows featured on their sign. I had the coffee ice cream which was very good. The ice cream is served in a cute little building with items for sale and a seating area. Just steps from the door of the ice cream shop are the actual dairy cows. The farm lets you stroll amongst the cow pens. When we were there, there were lots of baby cows, each with their own little cow-house. So cute!
google avatar

Randall W.

Yelp
Super awesome ice cream parlor. I recommend getting the "Inez". It is surprisingly flayvorfull! The staff is helpful and friendly. Super clean in door eating area as well. If you have time, go outside and say hello to Flayvor, the cows' descents!
google avatar

Austin J. A.

Yelp
The cows that provide the milk that is turned into the ice cream that I eat at Flayvors...graze right outside in the grass. How's that for local? Perfectly delicious! I love their strawberry ice cream. I also love their milk and fla(y)vored milk. By the way, where does the Y come from? YES ICE CREAM NOW? This is the perfect meeting spot for the five-college area. This ice cream is best in the hot, hot, hot, hot summer, before or after a dip in Puffer's Pond. It's also best after picking fruit (strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries, peaches, apples, whatever). Or after eating lunch. Or in the fall after a hike. Or when you're taking a break from studying. Or on a date. You should probably just figure out why Flayvors is perfect for you. :)
google avatar

Matt W.

Yelp
This may be sacrilege, but I prefer Flayvors and Cook farm to Herrell's. The latter may have more innovative flavors and a variety of recipes, but Flayvors just tastes...bright, like the difference between sweet corn that was picked a couple of days ago and sweet corn that was picked a few minutes ago. This has everything to do with the time to table from the udder to their frozen concoctions, and while they may not have the shortest supply chain for their other ingredients, I doubt there's anyplace on the planet that has a shorter one for the key ingredient. The cows and various companions (chickens, cats) are right there for one's entertainment and the edification of the kids, eating outside with a view of the mountains and the countryside cannot be beat, and the deficiencies of the place -- bad line management and flow, most notably -- are very minor. (If you're squeamish about manure, steer clear of the steers, as it were, but you can find a place upwind or inside). It's a really unique place to have ice cream -- where the milk may well have come from the cow you are eyeballing three feet away -- and as such I definitely put Flayvors on the don't-miss attractions for the area, particularly if you have kids in tow.

Yelp
Came here for the first time last week. Very creative with the flavors. Surprised at how close of an ice cream shop was to me this whole year. The ice cream was to my liking, very creamy. I personally like Cookie Monster and the mint Oreo which was a special flavor. One thing I did not like was how pricey two scoops of ice cream were. Two small scoops of ice cream was $5... I'm not sure if it's worth $5 though. Maybe I'll come back to try other flavors.

Kimberly K.

Yelp
I was only in Amherst for 3 days, and I had ice cream here 2 of those days. The ice cream is homemade, creamy and delicious. I had Butter Pecan and Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip. You can even look at the cows while eating your ice cream, since the business is right on the farm. Highly Recommend!
