Which Charleston Restaurants Pulled in Millions of Pandemic Aid? | Eater Carolinas

"I saw that Rockit Hospitality LLC, which controls the waterfront restaurant Fleet Landing, took in $1.62 million from the Restaurant Revitalization Fund as part of the SBA's payout to Lowcountry food and hospitality businesses." - Erin Perkins

Iconic Charleston Waterfront Restaurant Fleet Landing Turns 15 | Eater Carolinas

"For years I’ve gone to Fleet Landing to enjoy the she-crab soup and fried seafood while taking in waterfront views of the Charleston Harbor. I spoke with husband-and-wife co-owners Tradd and Weesie Newton ahead of their 15th anniversary celebration, a run of “15 Days of Fleet” that starts this Friday and will feature 15 oysters on the half shell for the price of a dozen, a “birthday beer” brewed by Low Tide Brewing, and a new special each day. The restaurant is housed in a retired 1940s naval building that had been boarded up for about 25 years; city rules prevented exterior changes, so architect Reggie Gibson focused on mimicking the building’s former interior after the owners had to rebuild the entire foundation. The 100% concrete structure has largely avoided major flooding and hurricane damage over the last 15 years. Nine current employees have been there since the first year, and notable diners have included Alex Rodriguez, Matthew Stafford, and Trace Atkins. Inside, charming touches like the iconic wall of bright orange life jackets (which Weesie found in their garage) and a star sticker on the glass between two back tables (added after guests kept walking into it) have become photo-worthy features. Since opening on November 30, 2004, Fleet Landing has served an estimated four million guests; because many people come specifically for certain dishes, the core menu hasn’t changed much, though the specials list has expanded, and the “15 Days of Fleet” concludes on November 30 with birthday cake and a 5 p.m. champagne toast." - Parker Milner

I’ve had the privilege of visiting the Fleet Landing campus in Atlantic Beach on and off for the past 10 years. Over that time, I’ve seen many friends — and now even family members — make Fleet Landing their home. I can honestly say I’ve never heard a single complaint from anyone I know who lives there. In fact, I truly believe Fleet Landing is one of the reasons my loved ones have stayed so vibrant and youthful. The community is constantly evolving, and the amenities are outstanding: multiple restaurants, a state-of-the-art fitness center, sailing and paddle boarding on the stunning Lake Constellation, beautiful pickleball courts, an active croquet club, a newly dedicated putting green, a gorgeous indoor pool, and even a dog park. But what truly sets Fleet Landing apart is the people. The residents form a warm and engaged community, and the staff is simply exceptional. Every team member I’ve interacted with has been kind, attentive, and genuinely compassionate. Fleet Landing isn’t just a place to live — it’s a place to thrive. I look forward to becoming a resident myself one day.

Fleet Landing is our home. Our friends are here, our Doctor is here, our dining options are fabulous. We waited so long for our house snuggled in a live oak canopy. Everything we want is here. Our kids say we live a resort, like being on a cruise. We couldn’t agree more. Fleet Landing really is a Well Inspired Vacation. Join us for Christmas next year.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Fleet Landing: My family and I cannot express enough gratitude for the exceptional care my father-in-law received at Fleet. From the moment he became a resident, he wasn't just another individual; he was treated like a cherished member of a large, loving family. The facilities themselves are consistently well-kept, clean, and inviting. It's clear that a great deal of pride is taken in maintaining a comfortable and safe environment for all residents. Beyond the physical space, the vibrant atmosphere was truly remarkable. There was always a diverse array of activities available, ensuring that residents could engage their minds, bodies, and spirits. Whether it was social gatherings, creative arts, or gentle exercise, my father-in-law always had something enjoyable to look forward to. The leadership and entire team, from top to bottom, deserve immense praise. Their dedication, professionalism, and compassionate approach were evident in every interaction. It was reassuring to know that my father-in-law was in such capable and caring hands. Every staff member we encountered demonstrated a genuine commitment to the well-being and happiness of the residents. Furthermore, the food and amenities were outstanding. Meals were not only delicious and nutritious but also served in a welcoming dining environment that fostered community. The additional amenities provided further enhanced his quality of life, making his stay truly comfortable and enriching. Choosing an assisted living facility is a significant decision, and we are so incredibly thankful that we chose Fleet. They provided not just care, but a true home filled with kindness, respect, and joy. We wholeheartedly recommend them to any family seeking an exceptional living experience for their loved ones.

I visited Fleet Landing to learn more about the residents and staff and how it compared to other life care communities. I was blown away by the campus, the people, and the energy of this community. From the first person we spoke to at the gate, to every staff member I interacted with everyone was incredibly gracious, patient, and kind. The community is beautiful! the landscaping is stunning, the buildings are tasteful and modern, and it is incredibly clean. The lake in the center of the community is such an impressive and cool feature, and I was amazed to see that people sail and paddle board on it! I talked to a lot of residents who said they felt welcomed and embraced from the moment they moved in, and they only wish they had done it sooner. Overall, if you are looking for a beautiful, supportive, and active life care community, I don't know that you can do much better than Fleet Landing.

Just moved here. People are so friendly! I have had dozens of invitations to join others for dinner. This really helps to meet residents from all over the complex. Questions are answered quickly and items are taken care of immediately. I feel safe here and there is so much to do. To complain is insane!!

This facility has been a true lifeline for our family- not once, but twice. My mother lived here previously and received such wonderful care that when we found ourselves in an urgent and difficult situation elsewhere, they were gracious enough to move heaven and earth to help us again. They found her a room immediately, and we will never forget that kindness. The care here is exceptional. The staff is attentive, compassionate, and professional. They treat my mother with the respect and warmth every family hopes for, and I can sleep at night knowing she’s in the best hands. She’s safe, thriving, and comfortable. Having her doctor on campus, as well as PT and so many helpful services under one roof, makes a world of difference. Add in restaurants, salon, and full calendar of engaging activities, and it truly feels like a community- not just a facility. I can’t express how grateful I am to have her back where she belongs.

Yelp
I went to Fleet Landing rehabilitation after complicated orthopedic surgery. Alert, awake and oriented, I was placed in a wheelchair, whisked off at high speed to get weight. My husband was occupied with someone who never introduced herself to me. I was never given an assessment. Totally ignored. A person, with her back to me, had my husband sign papers. Speaking up, I said I'm over here. The physical therapy department were pleasant, however my orthopedic doctors orders were never viewed or carried out. This was the beginning of a very unpleasant experience.

Yelp
This review is shared based on my mother's experience- I'd give them 0 stars if that was an option. What heath care facility doesn't require its workers to wash hands between every patient? Especially elderly patients with compromised immune systems and other patients w MERSA?! Washing hands is a simple preventive measure. There is a reason hospitals, doctors' offices and food businesses require ALL employees to wash hands...

Yelp
Excellent! Caring staff, interesting residents, a tranquil setting. One of the very best places for retirees nationwide. Worth visiting in-person. It will change how you think about "Senior Living."

Yelp
JUNE 2020- COVID IS RUNNING RAMPANT HERE!! My father is now on his second stay at Fleet Landing as I thought this was the best facility in Jacksonville but they have proven to be one of the worst. If your loved one needs medical attention and additional physical rehab do not bring them to fleet. They will not be taken care of properly. You will not get real-time responses or information from the staff. If they call back at all. Then administration will get shitty with you. If you try to advocate for your loved ones you will be shunned and ignored. Dealing with this pandemic is hard enough without getting accurate information, professional help, trusted clinical staff (and this was after a horrible first stay). They sent my father home saying he could walk, and a normal daily activities. He was complete deadweight and had to use a wheelchair 100%. He could not go to the restroom by himself or anything else. We were told he was walking and doing well. They pushed my father out to the car handed my mom a packet and sent them home. No instructions no updates no status and they failed to mention that someone had tested positive for Covid. They didn't tell us that until the phone call late Saturday afternoon- 4 hours after RELEASE! They told us he had been tested for Covid and was negative. HOWEVER- he actually had pneumonia in his left lung that almost collapsed & completely missed by the medical staff at Fleet and not discovered until the emergency room at Mayo clinic. There is a complete disconnect between the patient and the staff. We are now into a second stay and it is worse than the first. If you love your people do not send in the fleet. Take them to Brooks. It's a further drive but it's definitely worth it if you want your love one to stay alive and be well taken care of. If you'd like more info please contact me at FleetLandingsucks@gmail.com.
