The 38 Best Restaurants in Montreal, Canada | Eater

"This 4-year-old Japanese snack and sake bar hides in plain sight, maintaining the name, facade, and signage of the Chinatown flower and gift shop that once stood in its place. Inside, you’ll find a dimly lit, wood-paneled space, complemented by a reliably on-point soundtrack and food offerings prepared by chef Tetsuya Shimizu and his team. You’ll want to try the sea urchin cream with shrimp chips, the chirashi bowl, the three-day miso-aged duck, the sweet-and-sour fried chicken, and the tantan udon: wheat noodles slicked with chili oil and mixed with ground pork. Pair your meal with a selection from the sake menu, which leans towards natural, unfiltered varieties and includes a handy lexicon for navigating the terminology. Know before you go: Extend your evening by dipping downstairs to Sans Soleil, the team’s sibling vinyl listening bar, featuring DJ sets every night." - Valerie Silva

When I first saw the sign and the building, I thought it was a Chinese flower distributor. Upon walking inside you notice with warm ambience. The food was delicious and i especially love the duck. Our server was exceptional. When I come back, I would like to try the F&C sushi as I watched the chef prepare the dish numerous times throughout the night!

Speak-easy vibes with truly amazing dishes and great drinks. We had amazing service and tried all the recommendations. My favourite dishes were far and away the duck and the sashimi. The fried chicken was also a must-order. Highly recommend checking them out.

Wow! I am a relatively picky eater and even I can appreciate this is great food even if a lot of the flavours were out of my comfort zone. Super flavourful unique dishes. Expensive for the portion size but honestly that’s what you pay at these kinds of restaurants. In my opinion, the flavour and quality of food is worth the $. Service is very attentive and you always feel taken care of. Ambiance is very nice with one of the waiters/managers being the DJ constantly providing the vibe 🤑🤑 Yummy would go back!!!

We tonight enjoyed the tasting menu at Fleurs et Cadeaux and it was a memorable experience. The standout for us was the Japanese milk bread — truly the best we've ever had. It was incredibly soft, melted in the mouth, and featured a delightfully crispy layer on top. The fried chicken was also excellent, accompanied perfectly by the black garlic sauce, which was the best sauce pairing for it. The duck breast was amazing with a lovely charry flavor, but we found the daunted mushroom flavor profile a little off — too sour to complement the smokiness of the breast well. We particularly loved the Toro special dish; its richness and buttery texture, combined with a subtle brininess of the sea, made it exceptional. Even my friend, who’s not usually a seafood fan, enjoyed it thoroughly. For dessert, we tried both the annin dofu and the brownie, with the brownie absolutely standing out. The chocolate had an impressive density balanced perfectly with the sweetness of the caramel, and the cream on top was a lovely finishing touch. The service was top notch throughout the evening. Every dish was presented beautifully, and the timing between courses was just right. The only suggestion we have is to consider expanding the tasting menu slightly—adding one or two more dishes or increasing the portion size of a couple of dishes, such as the fried chicken, would help round it out perfectly for 3 people. Overall, an excellent dining experience with delicious food and attentive service. Highly recommended!

Google
The food at Fleurs et Cadeaux was awesome :) Would definitely recommend if you are craving some good food in the Montreal, QC area. The Magret de Carnard Au Miso Blanc (Duck Breast) was awesome. The duck was tender, savoury and delicious. Would definitely recommend if you are craving some good duck. The F&C Chirashi Sushi was awesome. The variety of sashimi was fresh and delicious. The rice was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Would definitely recommend if are you craving a good variety of sashimi and rice. The Takaki D’Albacore (Tuna Sashimi) was fresh and delicious. The Poulet Nanban (Sweet and Sour Fried Chicken) was good. The fried chicken was tender, crispy and flavourful. Would definitely recommend if you are craving some good sweet and sour fried chicken. The Tantan Udon was okay. The udon was perfectly cooked with great texture. The spicy ground pork was delicious. The sesame based sauce was okay. The Brownie, Caramel Sale Au Miso Rouge (Brownie with Miso Salted Caramel) was good. The brownie was delicious with chocolatey goodness. The miso salted caramel was an interesting flavour that somehow worked with the brownie. The Annin Dofu was awesome. This cream based dessert with caramelized apples (or was it pear?) and shikwasa ice cream was light, not too sweet, citrusy, and heavenly. Wish there was more of the shikwasa ice cream which provided that really good citrus flavour. Would definitely recommend the Annin Dofu dessert to wrap up the dinner :)

The restaurant’s decor exudes a Japanese mid-century modern vibe, creating a warm yet lively atmosphere with elements like a vintage record DJ booth playing jazz and similar music. The food was absolutely amazing, offering a perfect blend of light, rich, and luxurious flavours. Each bite harmoniously combined fat, acidity, and sweetness. Standout dishes included the miso duck, albacore tuna, and udon noodles.

The food is delicious. We had the chirashi don, the tantan udon and the miso duck. Everything tasted amazing and mouth watering. The inside has a good dark ambience, but our seats were super unconfortable. We were sat on a tiny narrow table on wall and there were almost no place for our dishes. The service is quick. Although it’s a little bit pricey, it’s definitely a place worth trying.

Google
The sashimi was a mix of hits and misses, the scallops were especially fresh and delicious, but the salmon was not fresh at all. The Agedashi Tofu was excellent, and the duck dish was also quite good. The environment is fair; a bit old and not particularly Japanese in style, but still acceptable. However, the biggest downside was the price, portions were quite small, making it feel overpriced for what we received.

Yelp
My favourite Japanese restaurant in Canada, possibly the best I've had anywhere including Japan The duck was the best I've ever had in my life, the nanban chicken pretty good, and then the agedashi tofu was great The chirashi was over the top great, I will come back for this Sole gripe was ordering green tea, I got a tiny cup for $2.50 and no refills

Yelp
Amazing local restaurant! Great izakaya with great service and awesome ambiance. The entrance was a little confusing and hidden away but we loved how it just really added to that hidden gem charm. Got the: - onsen tamago: $5 (9/10) poached egg x1 in dashi broth with truffle oil - albacore tataki: $19 (9.5/10) albacore in yuzu ponzu with wasabi chimichurri - poulet nanban: $16 (10/10) karage that is perfectly fried, not heavy batter at all, moist chicken, and the black garlic tartare sauce was wonderful, not too garlicky - canard vielli au miso blanc: $20 (8.5/10) white miso duck aged 3 days, lightly charred, good duck flavor and tender but could not taste the miso even though it was miso aged for 3 days. Also the duck was barely lukewarm when it got to our table. The crispiness of the char was a nice touch - papikra mazemen: $17 (7/10) ramen with roasted sweet pepper sauce, sautéed squash, egg yolk, and sweet paprika oil. A unique concept but was a bit oily and not well balanced TLDR: Excellent date spot or just to hang out with friends!

Yelp
Loved everything about this place!!! The food- duck, chirashi, tofu, soba-Excellent. The drinks-amazing. The vibes-on point. But the best part of it was the service! I called the day of for a reservation and unfortunately they only had a 9:30pm available for the main dining area BUT the lady on the phone mentioned that they have a speakeasy downstairs that serves everything on the menu!!! As soon as we checked in, they led us downstairs and once we got in, our server was so kind. I loved how the entire speakeasy was set up and they even had a beer vending machine!!

Yelp
I had such a great solo meal at Restaurant Fleurs et Cadeaux a week or so ago when I was in Montreal on an impromptu solo trip. Restaurant Fleurs et Cadeaux is a Japanese restaurant, sake bar, and natural wine bar. The building from the outside doesn't necessarily look like you're about to enter into one of the coolest, vibe-iest restaurants ever. It's so cool inside - dark with great bar seating and amazing kitchen views. I had a reservation for 1 at the bar, which was a great place to sit for a solo meal (I sat next to someone else having a solo meal). I had their chirashi for dinner, which was really classic and fresh. Although I love a solo meal, I wish I'd been eating with some friends so I could try more of their food (everything on the menu looked amazing)! The chirashi was all I had room for (plus drinks), but I'd definitely love to go back and try more of their food. Their beverage program is outstanding - they had great options in every category! Because I wanted to try so much, I had one glass of wine, one sake (a French sake!!!), and a cocktail - all were great! The service at the bar was fantastic, too. Overall, just a great meal - one I'd be happy to repeat when I'm back in Montreal!

Yelp
We were a party of 2 and were seated at the bar- not sure there were any tables for 2. The service was friendly and warm. We enjoyed the platter of sashimi that was lovingly prepared while we watched. The fried chicken and stir fried udon were just ok. The place was really hot. Overall nice meal

Yelp
Very unique japanese reataurant. There were some sushi and sashimis on the menu, but I opted to go with items I didn't usually see on typical Japanese menus. First off, I went through the wrong door, the side door instead of the front door. Not sure how I missed it. I saw the chinese words over the main door and didn't think that it was the right restaurant. The waitstaff was nice enough not to make me go through the front door again. My waitress was so warm and friendly. Went through some recommendations. I ended up getting the recommended grilled miso aged duck. I got the marinated veggies, and chicken karage. I topped it all of with creme caramel au matcha. The duck was so well executed. Perfectly charred with a thin black layer on the fat side of the duck. You can taste the smokiness from the char. The chef timestakingly grilling each duck in front of the bar crowd. The chicken karage was delicious. Juicy and full of flavor. The white dipping sauce was a good compliment. The highlight of the night had to be the dessert. I was very full after my 3 small plates and a drink, but was able to finish this pudding like dessert with ease. It was light and not too sweet. The match flavor did come through but did not overpower. The sweetened strawberries complemented the dessert well. Service was great my water was never empty for more than 10 seconds. I'd like to try their sashimi next time. Or tuna tataki. The chefs really take their time dressing each dish. Really enjoyed the experience and the food.

Yelp
A trendy place with a cool take on Japanese sushi. There's not really any sushi on the menu but the dishes are still unique and delicious. The quality of fish was quite good and while the rice wasn't your traditional sticky rice it was also good. The fried chicken dish was one of our favorites. They were lacking an a la carte option for the visitor who just wants to try some maki sushi but would still recommend

Yelp
Amazing French-Japanese fusion tucked away in Chinatown! We had heard great things and wanted to try it out on a whim. We were so happy with this decision! Came in as walk ins and luckily they had spots for us right away. We ordered a handful of dishes that all came out in fairly quick succession. The uni mousse was first and it was unique with amazing uni flavour and texture, served with shrimp crackers. Then the agedashi tofu - I wanted to drink the broth. The miso duck was delicious, cooked to perfection, and went so well with the grilled green onion. And then the chirashi bowl had perfect sushi rice and sashimi topped with elements like a shisho leaf and ikuri that elevated the bowl and added a great mix of flavours. Finished with the hojicha creme brulee which was fusion dessert perfection. Sake selection was great and the service was top notch! Definitely plan to come by for a visit if you're in town!

Yelp
Very Disappointed on multiple levels given the reviews. Food - nothing would be considered tasty or flavorful. Sushi seemed appropriate for supermarket grade. Toro was more akami than toro, more red than fatty tuna. Tofu underwhelming. Short ribs I've made better at home. Tamago was good. Udon acceptable but I expected a soup udon instead of more stir fry. Chicken wasn't that tender or juicy. Ran out of duck and one of the desserts. Service - while everyone was friendly, the attention was lacking. Had to flag down multiple times to ask for water, tea and bill. Skipped on dessert because of inability of find any server and decided to just get out. Atmosphere - this is a place to chill if you're young and want to seem hip. Low light. Music appropriate for the bohemian vibe. Too cool to care attitude. I didn't like it and prefer they spend more time on the food and service. Everyone was under age 35 and hipster.

Yelp
Great food, very casual, relax ambiance. Super nice staff !! Small and cozy, trendy place

Yelp
Walked by this building so many times and never knew it's a restaurant! Made a reservation for Sunday night but didn't really need it, plenty of bar space. Hostess was also my bartender & waitress. She gave me a bunch of recommendations, and I ended up with the duck, karaage & gomae. Also started off with the Yune drink because I can't say no to yuzu. It turned out to be a yuzu flavored old fashioned, one of my fave drinks! There's also a sizeable sake collection which I couldn't partake this time. All 3 dishes I ordered were excellent - the duck was cooked perfectly with caramelized ion on the skin. The karaage was crispy outside and juicy inside. But the gomae really amazed me, it came with a light & flavorful dashi broth, the tomatoes were flame kissed so the skin was charred but inside was a burst of sweetness. It almost didn't need the sesame sauce. I thought the music volume was perfect too. Great experience!

Yelp
Hands down the best meal we've had in Montreal so far! The wine and sake list are next level, and the food is incredible. Each dish was some of the best of each thing we had, but we especially loved the duck. It had a tender inside and a charred crispy skin that was so unlike other duck we've eaten.

Yelp
Miso duck is great. I wanted the fried mochi and uni pasta but both were sold out. The tamago was really jus an poached egg. Fried chicken flavor was good but it came out cold .

Yelp
We tried Fleurs et cadeaux for date night and was seriously impressed! Located in Chinatown, it doesn't look like much from the outside, but the moment you step in, it is a completely different vibe than the rest of Chinatown. The decor is vintage yet trendy, upscale and inviting. The restaurant itself is not very big, so it has that dimly lit, intimate feel to it. The chef is Japanese, from Japan and the food was honestly top notch. We loved every dish we ordered and as well as the Asian inspired cocktails. They also have a very lovely selection of fun natural wines. We had the miso duck magret, chicken yakitori as well as the DIY handroll tower. The fish was so fresh and probably one of the best sushi I've had in Montréal as of recent. The minute we left the restaurant, we started telling all of our friends to make a reso there! Parking can be difficult in Chinatown but there is a small parking lot right beside the restaurant. I can't wait to return to Fleurs et cadeaux; it's perfect for date night, girls night or a double date! Would not recommend for a large party as there is limited seating. Overall: 5 Food: 5 Service: 5 Value: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Yelp
Although Montreal's Chinatown is only Canada's third largest, it's become the nexus point of refined dining and drinks in a casual atmosphere The latest addition is a new gastropub project that transformed a former florist shop building 'Fleurs & Cadeaux', while preserving its name, into a hybrid pub, bar, and restaurant with Japanese influenced cuisine and live vinyl tunes, where you won't notice time passing as enjoyment is on the menu! Still in soft opening mode, you can see the culmination of the energy and experience from all twelve owners who merged their thoughts together to launch this amazing spot in the middle of the pandemic. Everything was well thought out: space, wines/cocktails, dining menu and music, but was gladly surprised for everyone's genuine desire to hear your feedback to help improve the experience - love the community aspect! First, I tried the Sake Martini, a seemingly unassuming cocktail, but was actually the perfect opener for a light meal - and can be dangerous as you won't stop at one! Think Sake with light notes of cucumber gently infused with a tiny-hint of wasabi! Then as an appetizer, tried the Negi Toro Temaki, a hand-rolled type of sushi usually characterized by its conical shape but in this case looked more like a Japanese taco topped with a well balanced tuna belly mixture - yes you will lick your plate. And then for the main... (dramatic music), a most decadent steaming bowl of Pork Tan Tan noodles that brings you the comfort and wellness you gain from an Asian influenced carbonara but with luscious udon noodles instead, and layered umami flavours from a silky rich smooth sesame sauce, sautéed home made pork sausage, with hints of dashi and fish sauce, topped with crispy slices of garlic, mushrooms, scallions, pickled onions and slivers of nori seaweed sheets, that kept on bringing waves of deliciousness with every noodle pull and bite! Okay okay, I liked it a lot and you get the picture... will be returning and hope to see you too as this might become a regular hangout with friends!

Yelp
The ambiance of this place is so good! My friends and I were in town for a bachelorette and we loved the mood of the restaurant. Our waiter was awesome, we had questions about different types of sake and he actually let us sample a few to see what we liked. We decided make it a tapas style and try a bunch of things between the three of us. We said the duck was by far the best thing! 10/10

Yelp
Incredible food, excellent service, fun ambience! Went for a birthday weekend and had a great time. Highly recommended

Yelp
Always wanted to come try and finally did with a group of friends. Cozy and charming place but the food is just Ok. Food wasn't bad but nothing memorable. The only dish we ordered that left me surprised a bit was the Uni cream with shrimp crackers. Pricing on the higher end. Tried it but will not go back.

Yelp
I tried the bento and the genmaicha cookies with the yuzu and yellow beets mousse. The bento was delicious. There were many different items such as sashimi, tempura shrimp, fried chicken, etc. They were all very flavorful and the presentation was beautiful. The cookies were harder than I expected. I thought they would be more chewy and soft. However, they had a strong tea flavor which was great and the yuzu mousse was delicious as well. You can order on their website directly for delivery or pickup. Would definitely try their othet stuff.

Yelp
On my to do list for a while, I finally had a chance to venture out to Chinatown and grab some takeout. You can preorder on their website, which I did, and showed up right as they packaged my order. I went for the Karaage Chicken Curry and I was practically licking the bowl in public! The curry sauce was super tasty but the chicken was mind blowing. Seriously good chicken; it was juicy but crispy on the outside. The portion was generous as well. Nearby outdoor sitting makes it super convenient. This surely will not be my last visit! After this first taste, I have to go back for more including their bento box. They also offer a great variety of wines and sakes, all available to go with purchase of food. Don't miss out on the cafe on the side fir some good old coffee and lattes.

Yelp
I expected more of this restaurant given the reviews. Food was good but nothing to be impressed about. The grilled duck had a really good taste but came out cold.

Yelp
The service was fantastic. My server was very friendly and knowledgeable about the dishes. I had the miso marinated duck breast and it was delicious. The dessert that I tried was phenomenal. I forget what it's called but everything on the dessert plate complemented each other perfectly. Moscow mule substitute with sake is bomb diggity. Atmosphere and environment was gratifying. I thought the menu was quite limited but I will definitely come back here just to try the rest of their menu.
