11 Terrific Fried Chicken Dinners Around the Twin Cities

"Nashville Coop specializes in Nashville-style hot chicken, served in strips, sandwich, or Texas toast form. Heat is densely packed into this chicken’s breading, but the level of spice is customizable: The MN Nice chicken accommodates those with a low capsaicin tolerance while the Cluckin’ Hot guarantees “24 hour pain.”" - Justine Jones, Joy Summers

Google
"Pleasantly surprised!!" Never judge a book by its cover...We've driven past Flew the Coop since it opened and chalked it up to another fast food spot, and decided to keep on driving. BOY, WE WERE WRONG!! It's a real Nashville style chicken restaurant. Side options and all. The food is freshly made while you wait (it might take some time to prepare your order). It's absolutely delicious!! The staff is friendly and helpful. The interior feels like a road trip stop joint, loaded with red, black, and white themed decorations. I had the chicken sandwich (medium level), and it was perfect, just a smidgen of heat. My wife had a grilled chicken meal mild. She liked the fried okra. We were both very happy with our meals and will definitely be back.

Google
Flew the Coop is located alongside a gas station, and while the food was good, the overall experience was just okay. I had the medium-spiced chicken Sammie — tasty, and I appreciated that it was cut in half. What really brought the rating down was the service. We waited nearly 30 minutes for our food, and then they completely forgot my friend’s chicken and waffles. Once we brought it to their attention, it took another 15 minutes. No offer of a discount or coupon — just a simple “sorry for the wait.” The food was decent, but not extraordinary, and the service left a lot to be desired.

Got here at 8:45 pm, still greeted us and served us. I used to work in fast food and I know how difficult it could be to serve someone when you’re fixing to close. Chicken was great, sweet potato tots were good, okra was great. They ran out of Mac n cheese, which we really wanted to try. But I gave 5 stars because of attitude and taste.

Google
Arrived 5:45 Counter service was good Ordered 1 Chicken Sandwich as we wanted to see the quality before we ordered more. 1 Strawberry lemonade in a big Jar Chicken sandwich came out fresh n hot. We got the Mild Spice and it was still a little spicy so be aware. Juicy breast meat, very, very hot on a nice brioche bun with a good slaw and pickles. The fries are a cross between chips and french fries. Haven't had anything similar since we were in Spain. I LOVED these fries!!! A++ 2 sauces on the side, both tasty. A Chicken super crisp and flavorful. A+ We ordered a NY Hot Dog and it was also great. Good snap to the dog and awesome, spicy-sharp mustard. Onions and Sankranti as well as mayonnaise. A Lemonade was delicious but not something we'd get often. Red color and tons of Hugh Fructose Corn Syrup. Definitely a splurge. Pricey too. B Overall I would definitely recommend FTC if you like spicy Nashville Sytle Chicken Sandwiches or great hot dogs. Not cheap, but good and worth every penny. Decor is simple and effective.

Google
I enjoyed my meal here. I had their AZ Famous Chicken Sammie. I chose the AZ heat spice level. I made no changes to the sandwich otherwise and it was delicious. The heat leve was good for me. By no means the hottest I have eaten, but a nice burn through the whole meal. The fries were good, although I would appreciate some sort of seasoning on the fries. I dipped them in the comeback sauce, which was good, but there is never enough sauce in those tiny cups. I tried the Mac n cheese as well and was underwhelmed with it. To be fair, the spice from the sandwich may have interfered with the flavor of the Mac n cheese. I can't be sure. The restaurant was nice. The service was great. If I'm coming through Sedona again, this might be my go-to for a quick bite.

Google
I've been to many Nashville hot chicken places, and this stands head and shoulders above the rest in recent memory. The chicken sizes are huge, and the batter is perfectly crisp and seasoned. The spice levels seem to skew towards the milder side. The medium spice level tasted more like mild. The sides are great with good portion sizes. The fried okra and french fries were especially good. The macaroni and cheese was decent but the cheese could use a bit more complexity. The banana cream pie was probably the weakest part of this dinner. The pie was okay but could use a more substantial banana base. But since this is a chicken place, I'm giving it five stars because the chicken is seriously that good.

Google
The most amazing flavor-filled chicken sandwich I’ve ever had! I got the AZ Famous Chicken Sammie at the Jen’s level heat (which means no heat, haha), and for my side, I got the fried okra with some ranch. I also tried my kids’ mac and cheese and my husband’s cowboy beans, and everything was a chef’s kiss! I’m so sad they aren’t closer to Phoenix, but this place is a place you need to come to! It’s 100% worth it! Only 10 minutes from the 17th, so definitely stop by while traveling through. Hope they can open one in the northern Phoenix area soon 😉

Google
Have loved this place since the camp Verde location! The food is delicious, the staff is friendly and the owner is kind and awesome to chat with. Actual spicy! My husband and I always get the AZ hot

Yelp
Marcos is an amazing employee with great attitude! Food is amazing as always. Az hot is one of the best even if burns my mouth

Yelp
Oh my gosh! I can't believe I haven't written a review yet! This place is insanely good! It's not like any other chicken place I have ever been to. My husband but moaning and saying it's the BEST CHICKEN sandwich he has ever had. This definitely bumped up to my TOP 3 FAVORITE EVER. It hard to describe it is that good. The chicken is flavored so nicely, perfectly, and the chicken is so juicy while the outside is nice and crispy! Really crispy. Just an incredible chicken sandwich Oh almost forgot the sweet potato tots! The best I've ever had in my life. The sauce that comes with it. Mmmmm Writing this review is making my mouth water
google avatar

Michael F.

Yelp
My mistake. I didn't realize that the Camp verde location closed, and they moved to Sedona. I guess in the case of a restaurant moving, they can keep their previous reviews. I have nothing bad to say about my experience. It is actually a better location than before.
google avatar

Papi P.

Yelp
It's good (not great) food, no doubt about that. I l have had it more than a couple of times. The only bad are the prices. It is too high. I get supply costs and all that jazz but not worth more than a couple of trips a year due to the prices.

Yelp
We were visiting from out of town and ended up eating here 3 times as it was so addictive and many other spots in the valley were not really speaking to me. I got the grilled child sandwhich mild heat, deviled egg potato salad, and banana cream pie. The grilled chicken sandwich still has a kick in heat at mild heat level and was packed with flavor. The meat was juicy, well seasoned, bun toasted, coleslaw inside perfection, and the az comeback sauce addictive. The az comeback sauce is like a creamy, smokey bbq sauce with a bit of spice. I got extra to dip the sandwhich in. The deviled egg potato salad was not weirdly sweet like some places make it and complimented the meal. I like the crunchy bits on top of the pie. But it was all cream and no actual banana, and I personally like having banana peices in my banana cream pie. Seating is indoor and out door, vibe casual, and lots of drink options, like fun "healthier " soda brands. I never thought the best spicy grilled chicken sandwhich I would have would be in a small town in Arizona, but I look forward to going next time I pass through.

Yelp
Went through the drive thru. Ordered two different meals. They gave us rotten milk for the kids milk. Most of the items did not even have lids. They were just covered with foil. My child could've gotten seriously ill from drinking their rotten milk. I am just happy I always check his things before I feed him so I end up being the one to blow chunks sipping on the rotten milk cup and not him. Please have your employees get their food handlers cards so they know not to serve rotten food items, though it should be common sense sometimes it is overlooked.

Yelp
From time of writing this, it's been almost two months since I went. Don't remember the experience too much. I came in here after hiking cathedral rock during heaving snow. Was leaving my airbnb from Sedona to my airbnb in Phoenix. Looked up a place along the way to get a quick bite. Nothing too heaving before dinner. Inside was nice and clean and as expected after looking it up first before I got here. Don't remember the interaction that much, but I'll look at it that the service was good. I'm pretty sure I got one that was more on the spicier side but if I don't remember how it hit me. So then maybe I should've gotten it spicier. Either way don't remember it too much just remember going in and out and everything going as expected and what I wanted out of stopping by here. So I would recommend it.

Yelp
Chicken is just chicken, right? Wrong. This chicken is on a whole other level--perfectly crispy on the outside, locking in all the juicy goodness and keeping the meat incredibly tender. Every bite bursts with flavor.

Yelp
Don't walk:) RUN!!! I'm so excited Josh decided to bring his insanely DELICIOUS kitchen to Sedona! Best full menu I've had in months! Every side dish, dipping sauce & of course the Star of the Show 'Fried Chicken' was cooked to perfection! Oh & the Lemonade in the jars was a home run too. Everything tasted super fresh & the service was stellar. The cafe is quite spacious & super clean. Being a local FOODIE here, God answered my prayers. FTC will be our staple when we go out to eat on date nights I just hope once the word gets out, we will still find a table!
google avatar

Yelp
We didn't know what to expect for a small place on the side of a highway but they were delicious! The chicken was tender and flavorful and my son said his hot dog was good. Limited on the seating but it doesn't take long to get your food and eat. Service was good too.
google avatar

Madelynn F.

Yelp
Popped in here after staying at a nearby hotel. It did not disappoint! Staff was very friendly and helpful with the menu. And the food was delicious! I had the sandwich, mild, and it was absolutely delicious and flavorful (a bit spicer than I expected, but still good). I did it in had a side of fries, and I loved the shape and taste of their fries. My dad had the tenders, mild, with the cowboy beans and macaroni and cheese. I also had a side of fried okra. They have several different dipping sauces you can try as well. I definitely recommend this place.

Seth P.

Yelp
This is probably the best Nashville chicken sandwich I've ever eaten. The fries are fantastic as well. Plus, absolutely every restaurant in Sedona and the surrounding areas is grotesquely overpriced. This place is not, you actually get a very good value for your money.
google avatar

Alexis A.

Yelp
Stopped on my way back home and was well worth the food. Recommended You order at counter so service is good
google avatar

Nisha M.

Yelp
Holy smokes!! The food completely exceeded our expectations, it was so delicious! I cut my sandwich in half and the chicken was so juicy it was dripping down. The portion of chicken was generous and the Mac n cheese had a great flavor. The service was friendly and quick and the place was nice and clean. Overall it was an excellent choice and we will most definitely return for another sandwich and to try more sides! They also had an ice cream shop that smelled amazing, and they want to give that a try next time for sure!

Yelp
Such good chicken! I loved it supper nice people. Clean restrooms. BEST FRENCH FRIES!!!

Yelp
We were famished when we stopped here on our way back to Phoenix, and boy, I'm so glad we did! Marco enthusiastically greeted us and really took the time to explain the menu and offer recommendations. He even gave us a sample of the mild spice, which helped us choose our spice level more wisely; it turned out to be way too fiery for us! But Jen's style was perfect. The pieces of chicken were huge and delicious, and the homemade sauces were fantastic. We ate outside on the little patio, and when we walked back in to return our trays, the owner, Josh, asked how everything was. He was sincerely interested in our response, and he even further explained the ingredients and their process. I had earlier seen him shake another guest's hand when the guy left, and he kindly did the same with my husband as we prepared to leave. The food was great, but it was once again the human element that set this place apart.

Yelp
I think this place hits or misses based on the time you go. It's in a small town, off the main highway in Camp Verde, & I'm sure good help is hard to find consistently on holidays, weekends, etc. We hit a busy time, mid week, late lunch hour, so it was all fresh food, w/lots of workers available. The chicken sandwich is HUGE, shared between 2 people. 2 large tenders, one per 1/2 sandwich. Brioche bun was perfect, soft, held up, but toasted on the inside and maintained that crunch until the last bite! Slaw, pickles and comeback sauce to top it off. We got it hot, I didn't think it was too hot. Hattie B's in Nashville's Hot was x2 of this hot. Might go up a level to "AZ hot" next time, I like spice. Fries are unique, like a curly wedge, crisp outside soft fluffy inside. Winner! Worth the stop.
google avatar

Harold R.

Yelp
Excellent hot chicken sandwich. French fry shape was interesting, plenty of crunchy and puffy parts of the potato. Sauces are great. Remember that mild level is still a bit spicy. Location is very close to highway, in the same mall as the drive thru Starbucks.
google avatar

Dennis H.

Yelp
Spicy hot chicken. They warn you .... Please choose your heat level wisely. No refunds. Had the sandwich, fries, and spicy ranch as a side. My wife had the "Are you cluckin serious" hot level with a single tender .... One bite and it she said oh I got light headed. Chicken and waffles for me. Good luck and enjoy.

Yelp
All our food had amazing flavor! Even better than the flavor of the food was the customer service, which is hard to find these days! I have food allergy and the staff were so willing to help ensure what I ordered would be safe. This is going the extra mile because many times I get moans and groans when I ask about my allergy. We even got some ice cream for dessert which was enjoyed as well. This place is well worth the stop I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Stephanie R.

Yelp
I am extremely disappointed. Despite reading many great reviews, our experience with the food was far from fantastic. We ordered food for our family of five and spent over $90, only to receive mediocre food. The chicken was dry, but the most disappointing item was the fried pickles. They were highly overcooked to the point of being uneatable--hard as rocks. What bothers me the most is that the staff must have known they were overcooked because of their hard texture, yet they still chose to serve them. Due to this experience, we have decided that we will never visit again. Jay Bird's Nashville Chicken in Sedona is the place to go!
google avatar

Marie Z.

Yelp
I had heard of this place last time we drove north. We were now driving to Sedona via Cottonwood so here was our chance. It is right at the Camp Verde exit and surrounded by some national franchises. The warnings about the heat of the chicken were everywhere. I started with a tender with mild heat and a side of potato salad. My husband and son shared a tender basic with the fries. The chicken was excellent and the dry rub was flavorful and just enough heat for me. The potato salad was a good contrast. The fries were terrific. I would describe them as thick chips. And then there were the dipping sauces. We tried the garlic aioli, Arizona campfire, and bbq. All went well with the chicken. The fries were gone before I could dip those. We will be back on other trips north. There are other sides and sauces to try. They also have hot dog choices and ice cream. Seating in and outside.

Lily H.

Yelp
Absolutely fresh, delicious and generous portions. Why go anywhere else for a chicken sandwich?
google avatar

Yelp
Probably some of the best fried chicken I've had in a while! Very last minute decision to come here because My husband and I were at the African safari place nearby and they were not too many restaurants in the area. The food at the safari wasn't the best so we decided to go out and grab something else to eat. Husband found this place and it had good reviews so we decided to give it a go. Honest Opinion: the hot fried chicken here is so good, it got me hooked on fried chicken! I went and got fried chicken from some other places two times that week! Other places were not as crispy though. The fried chicken here remained crispy even a good 30 minutes after we left the place with the order! I got the Caesar salad with hot crispy chicken tenders. What a lovely combination! I don't need too much of the Caesar dressing because the chicken was so good with the salad on its own. I could have totally gone for more chicken! My husband got the AZ Chicken Sandwich but somehow thought of keeping it healthy and went with a mild grilled chicken instead. He's usually the one to go for the crispy stuff but somehow it was me this time. Very good call. The chicken on his sandwich was really fresh and cooked perfectly as well. The flavor of the sauce on the outside didn't stick as much because it was a big chunk of chicken and on the inside ended up being a little bit more plain. It did go well in his sandwich though. There was a lot of sauce in that sandwich! He also got the Pineapple Chamoy Coleslaw on the side instead of fries. He seemed to like the cause of a. It did have a little bit of a sweet taste to it. I tried some with my salad and it did go well. Didn't end up finishing the entire thing because it was actually quiet a decent serving!
google avatar

Shane S.

Yelp
Was staying in the area for the weekend and wanted to grab a bite to eat before hitting the road back home. Decided to try this place out from a local's recommendation. Did not disappoint. Got the medium and hot chicken tenders with potatoes salad and fries. All of it was incredible. The dipping sauces were also amazing. The service was good, the cashier answered all my questions and made some great recommendations. The food came out pretty fast and was delivered to our table outside. The weather was nice and the views were great! Definitely recommend pulling off the highway to try it out.
google avatar

Angela R.

Yelp
Great food! We were headed back from the Grand Canyon and stumbled upon this place- we can't wait to go back! Juicy chicken that tastes so fresh and the best ranch I've ever had!

Lisa M.

Yelp
YUMMMMMM! YOU HAVE TO TRY IT! Juicy, tasty and owner is so kind. Delicious food and service is good. I will go back anytime I am in the area!
google avatar

Matt N.

Yelp
This place is a great place to stop on the way up. The Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich is better than anything I've had in the valley. I ordered larger of the 2 choices of chicken sandwiches. I love that they ask if you want white or dark meat. I chose dark and they stacked 2 chicken thighs on top of each other. They offer 5 different amounts of heat for the chicken. I ordered the "Hot" and it was perfect. Not so hot that it takes away from the flavor of the rest of the ingredients in the sandwich. The coleslaw on the sandwich helps tame the heat and is delicious. As a side I picked the fries. They are curly style and really wide. Salted and cooked perfectly. This will be my must go to when passing by Camp Verde from now on.
google avatar

Niki L.

Yelp
Super friendly, super tasty! We got the AZ Famous Chicken Sandwich, Hot & Fries. So delicious! The hot is good, tasty - not overly spicy, no numb tongue. Just good flavor~ Fries were crispy & perfect!

A P.

Yelp
Great AZ hot chicken. Whew it was so good my eyes were watering but couldn't stop eating because it was kickin great. Go for the AZ hot

Owen M.

Yelp
I write this review only 25 mins after lunch while sitting on the toilet. Not very good at all, I had the chicken sandwich with tenders, it was so coated on paprika it was barely edible. The bun was super soggy because the grease from the chicken was just dripping out. After just a couple bites I started getting in upset stomach. Not a single clean table in the place. My wife got a chicken Cesar salad and it was swimming in the dressing, she said her chicken was just paprika and bland. We both feel sick and will not be returning. I didn't know a "chicken" joint could mess up chicken so badly.
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
Where to start. First of all, this place is pretty cool. The chicken is juicy and not dry. The buns are tasty too. The service is impeccable. I believe the owner was helping me when I stopped by and he is a customer service rock star. Make sure you support your local establishments.. Getting one for the road when I head back to Cali.
google avatar

Shay L.

Yelp
Hidden Gem! Great fried chicken and lots of spice and dip options! I DoorDashed a Caesar salad (more than once now) and really love how the dressing comes on the side and the chicken was packaged on the slice of bread. It arrived perfectly to enjoy fresh! Great spot!
google avatar

Allyson A.

Yelp
WOW. (Coming from someone who lived in Nashville!) We are so glad we chose this instead of another fast food stop. Order ahead when you're about 20 mins out and you'll have a perfectly cooked, tender and juicy hot chicken sandwich. Mild/medium is plenty but definitely get NO spice if you're sensitive. The lemonade comes in huge jugs which was a fun surprise and the French fries are like pig tails. Met the chef or owner who was very sweet and thankful for our compliments. 10/10 will be recommending and stopping any time I'm passing by.
google avatar

Andrew E.

Yelp
This place is a total rip off of another hot chicken place with hat in the name and the second letter in the alphabet-- and I love it. Really similar too. Good spices. Sides good, even had fried okra which is a plus. Good selection of saucers. Service was fast. Cool ambiance. I can't believe this isn't a chain. It's so like the one in vegas. When the other choices are the usual fast food places this was a no brainer. Only little nitpick..crust doesn't stick to the chicken as good as others.. Maybe they're honing their technique. Forgivable tho. Hope they franchise into Phx..
google avatar

Anoop M.

Yelp
This place is a gem in a food desert. Seriously, I want to see these guys in Phoenix, where I live, because I want to frequent this place at-least once a week! I came here because of the Yelp reviews. But what will keep me coming back is the phenomenal food and the SERVICE! The owner saw me outside with my pup and came with a bowl of water. I am in the restaurant business, and I was immediately taken by the hospitality. And the food does not disappoint. HUGE portions, perfectly moist chicken, tenderized over 24 hours. Go here!
google avatar

Nick J.

Yelp
Amazing fried chicken! Very well seasoned and many spice levels for all people. Breaded and fried perfectly! And big pieces of chicken. The fries feel light and fluffy. All around great!
google avatar

Mary J.

Yelp
So yummy! I have a pretty high heat tolerance and the medium was perfect for me. Might even get the hot next time but I would recommend medium for the first time

Scott C.

Yelp
We love some hot chicken! And this was a treat when we got into town late. The staff were friendly and helpful. Spice levels for all. Give it a go!
google avatar

Katie L.

Yelp
We have been ordering from here for over 2 years and hands down the best place in Camp Verde! No matter what if we dine in, take home or have it door dashed every single time the food is amazing!! All the folks that work there and the owner are amazing!! We will continue to be regular customers and highly recommend to everyone and anyone to eat here as you will not be disappointed! Keep up the amazing work guys you are doing a phenomenal job!
google avatar

Sophie K.

Yelp
Love this place! Super fresh and spicy. Yummm :) I love how I can choose the spicy level and get to choose two sides with a combo. I got potato fries and coleslaw as sides, and fries were so crispy outside and soft inside, I'm not a huge fan of wedge, but this is something between regular fries and wedge, and I really loved it! And the coleslaw! The sauce was too good. Creamy and spicy. I could just have their slaws too. And the chicken sandwich!! I really liked how crispy and flavorful the chicken was, yet it was moisture and tender inside. Nom nom ;) Plus, the person who works here (not sure if he's the owner) is super friendly. He brought us (2 human 1 pup) a heater - we were sitting outside because of our pup, and that was really nice of him! Anyways would come back here again!
google avatar

Susan M.

Yelp
Flavor was excellent (mild) but took forever with very few customers. Chicken coating was way overcooked and so hard, I was afraid to break a tooth.
google avatar

Lorri G.

Yelp
I'm glad we tried this place. It was mid afternoon and not busy at all!! The breading was yum! It is fried so how do you go wrong?! If you're watching carbs don't do the bun. The coke slaw was super tasty also. This is definitely something I've not ever had before.
google avatar

Matt J.

Yelp
The reviews don't lie! These chicken sandwiches are BIG, both wide and tall. I ordered online and my order was ready when I arrived, steaming hot and fresh, and incredibly tasty. The chicken is thick and juicy, the spice level is true to what you order, and the buns are nicely toasted and don't get soggy with the sauce and slaw. It's all durable and one of the best chicken sandwiches I've had in Arizona.

Katie M.

Yelp
Great, fresh food. Nice rest stop between Flagstaff and Phoenix. We got the AZ Chicken Sandwich and sweet potato tots. Plenty of food for two people to share.
google avatar

Joshua H.

Yelp
Excellent sandwiches and fries. Service was prompt and polite. Would not get the Mac n Cheese again but otherwise I would highly recommend this joint and go there again. Medium was the perfect spice level.
google avatar

Irene B.

Yelp
Kind of a hit or miss depending on your preferences. For me, it was more of a miss although their fries deserve an honorable mention. They are on the thicker side with a crispy exterior, pretty good. The coleslaw was not bad and the Mac and Cheese was pretty standard. We ordered the zinger basket and you have a choice of chicken tenders or thighs, mix and match for a total of 3 pieces. It also comes with a choice of two sides and a sauce. This is where it becomes more subjective. I was not a fan of the breading at all. It was a hard layer that seemed over-fried and did not mesh well with the chicken, as it easily detached from it. My friend however appreciated its crispness. Next time, I would rather just grab something from Denny's or McDonald's.
google avatar

Billy C.

Yelp
This place is worth the visit. I'm cluckin' serious. We were cooped up in the car and needed a break. My daughter and I both got the Zinger Basket. She got Mac & Cheese and Sweet Potato Tots. I got the sidewinder fries and pineapple slaw. Her tenders were Jens (no heat) and I went with the Hot (which was delicious and manageable on the heat scale). No fowls here, just on point service and food. Friendly staff and convenient location on the way to Flag make this restaurant worth the visit. Don't be a chicken and head to Flew The Coop.

Jenny ..

Yelp
We stopped here on our way home from sedona; what a treasure in camp verde; the chicken sammie incredible. So big my husband and I shared it with a side of fries. The service was above and beyond. This is a must stop.
