Flicker Theatre & Bar Review - Athens Ga - The Infatuation

"The Athens art scene teems with comedians, and musicians, and each sect of the creative population has its own hub. Downtown’s Flicker is a haven for performers of all types. Split down the middle, one side is the bar itself, decked out with a giant settee, board games, and free Old Bay-spiced popcorn. The other side, hidden behind a curtain, hosts open mic comedy nights, film screenings, and all sorts of acts. After a hilarious (or hilariously bad) stand-up set, grab a refreshing housemade sangria or any of the excellent cocktails, which are elaborately drawn on the chalkboard above the bar. We dig the gin-based Jolene and the Red Wedding with bourbon and Cheerwine, which is about as Southern as it gets. photo credit: Sarah Newman photo credit: Sarah Newman photo credit: Sarah Newman" - Delaney Tarr

Service could have been better considering how well I tipped but my 4⭐️Is because they should have prices for drinks viewable to the customers. Other then that nice place good atmosphere, i watched the band “Cuddling” play in the theater which was awesome!! The band definitely rocked!! Good vibes!! I’ll definitely be back!

It is my favorite place in Athens. Such lovely memories and lovely times spent here. The drinks are amazing, the atmosphere is spot on. Such a wonderful gem

Cool dive bar right next door to the 40 Watt. Busy walls, lots of art, seeing some cool Ska and punk rock bands. Neat cavern and stage for bands. A place where your wildest dreams MIGHT come true!

Finished up 3 nights of DBT Heathens Homecoming at the 40 watt club, next door at Flicker. I got their drink called “Dr. Zhivago” (an espresso martini) with a bit of a twist with the help of my favorite bartender, Jeanie. She was so fun and accommodating so I now call that drink the “Jeanie-tini” Thank Jeanie! You’re the best!

Google
The best bar in Athens. Period. Art, small movie theater, bands, and the most fabulous bar tenders in town! Don't come to Athens and not visit.

If you liked the Adams Family (and I did) you will Love Flicker. It’s velvety gaudiness fits the real Athens scene perfectly. Feels like the vibe of the B-52’s on a slightly dark night, I loved it. I caught the end of “Hard Rock Zombies” in the free theatre and it was so tacky it was cool. Then I enjoyed some free popcorn and a great ginger cider for 4 bucks. Live music and weird movies shown frequently. It’s a locals bar but I think they will welcome you right in;)

I was there to see thrash metal band Mandown. Great band and great venue.

Google
It's my favorite bar ever. Divey and eclectic atmosphere with smarmy yet sweet bartenders. There's movies projected (with complimentary popcorn) or live music played more often than not, and local art is always on display. What more could I ask for? They stay open later than most bars. It's not really a selling point. Be careful going to any bar after 12 am.

Yelp
I'm fine with places requiring a mask to enter. That's the business owner's call on that and I have no problem with it at all. But this place takes it up to outrageous levels. If you pull your mask down to (heaven forbid) drink your drink at a bar and you don't IMMEDIATELY cover your face back up, you WILL be reprimanded by the bartender. Really would've liked this place but the bartender was extremely unpleasant. With all the options in Athens to have a drink, there is absolutely no reason to go here when they obviously do not respect their customers. The bartender seriously watches you like a hawk to pounce at the opportunity to be a jerk about your mask. It was really unsettling. If you're that scared of Covid, you might want to just shut your doors. Terrible experience and definitely will not be back. It was seriously ridiculous...

Yelp
Ha ha. This place really is the dump it is rumored to be around town. The bartender is very rude, and unwelcoming. Don't even expect for him to warm up to you, or be nice, that's clearly asking too much!!! We were told last night there are no drink specials, and we can read the board if we want to know anything else. I doubt dipstick owns the bar but I can be hopeful that the owner or manager reads this and fixes the problem. Just a little clue: your bartender needs to warm up to people and say something like "our hot toddy will warm you up it's delicious. It's 7 bucks and I know you ladies will enjoy it." To me, it's not really the price I'm asking for I'm asking for the bartender to help me out with suggestions so I start drinking and further support your establishment. This place is beyond clickish and my friend and I felt snubbed. Never again. Also the couch you have up front stinks like a horse pen. It must be absolutely crawling with bacteria. #rathole

Yelp
Fun little grungy dive bar in Athens. Great for part of your day drinking adventure! Lovely bartenders and affordable prices. Right downtown in a prime location. Sweet little seating spots for socializing. Perfect amount of alcoholic choices. Good Cronus. A little dark, but we love dive bars for that, right? Would be interested in a show here. Looks intimate and artsy. Solid choice overall.

Yelp
Honestly I cannot even believe how rude our bartender was to me. All they did was roast me and make fun of my drink choices. Ugh. So rude. Another bartender did a magic trick while I was drunk that consisted of putting a lime underneath a napkin and making me believe the napkin was moving on its own. How dare he. The atmosphere is weird. There was some loud noise music in the venue space. Too loud for talking!!! Turn it down!!! It feels very dirty and grungy, disgusting! Can't wait to go back and get treated terribly!

Yelp
This is the first-ever bar that has felt like a home away from home. I don't even order anything alcoholic most of the time I'm there, I just go to hang out and munch on some free popcorn! Half of the place is a bar, decorated in warm yellows and oranges. Everyone that works at the place is friendly, genuine, and really caring--it's cool to have that kind of place downtown where everybody knows your name, to be cliche. Each month the art on the wall changes--that's right, Flicker also serves as an art gallery of sorts. Films are screened in the second half of the place, which is a small, cozy theatre. More often than film screenings are the music shows! From local gritty rock acts who unplug when they play at Flicker to big names who are on East Coast tours and want to sit at the delightfully painted in-house pianos for a couple hours, the musical menu each month is sure to delight. Oh yes--and did I mention the FREE POPCORN?!

Yelp
This is a good spot to check out local bands. It is usually packed on the weekends, and has a great indie dive bar feel. Atmosphere: it reminds me of a 1980's living room decked out in the color orange. The bar room is blocked out enough that you can have conversations while bands are playing in the other room. The band room is mostly standing areas, except when they host comedy shows, as they will set up chairs. Music: The times I have been there I have enjoyed the variety of bands. Sure some are better than the other, but it's always fun to take a chance. Patio: The patio is fairly small and only located in the front. The only negative is the occasionally cigar smoker, gracing us with the overwhelming strong cigar scent in the small space, which always seems to be there when I am. Lucky me. Overall a great local spots to see live music and grab a drink.

Yelp
After walking around at Athfest, my husband and I were eager to duck into a cool bar for a beverage and Flicker was the first place we saw. In we went! At first glance, I thought it was a standard dive bar - plastic cups, kinda messy, crowded seating, etc. However, as I soaked it all in, I noticed the movie theme, free popcorn and an entrance to a theater! How cool! We were just there for a quick beverage, so no movie for us. I love that they also had Jameson and Blenheim slushies!

Yelp
Alright dear Janet, you asked for it. Flicker. What can I say about the best bar in the universe? (It was bumped up to that spot from #2 after my original first favorite bar in the universe was decimated by Hurricane Ivan a few years ago.) Let me make a list, so as to not ramble incoherently for the next 20 minutes until either I fall asleep or I'm forced to stop writing by the internet police. 1. Best bartenders on the face of the planet! Particularly one named Jim, one named Richard, and one named Emily. 2. Free popcorn. And it's warm and SALLLLTY. Yessss. 3. The clientèle. On occasion (i.e. AthFest) you miiight find the random sorostotute or fratty frat boy hanging out here, but they're few and far between, and typically leave post haste. 4. Location, location, location. 5. Memmmmories. All alone in the moonlight. I remember the old days, I was beautiful then (etc. etc.). 6. walkable from my old house. 7. Janet. 8. MB and her T's. 9. Carrie. 10. The rest of the lovely crowd at Flicker. XOXO Flicker. I love thee.

Yelp
I love going to Flicker. It just makes me happy. Where else can you go and sit in a cute bar, watch TCM on the tube, drink a good beer, eat some freshly popped pop corn, and then check out a cool band in their theater around the corner from the bar. It is such a haven in a sometimes overwhelming town.

Yelp
A long time ago, children, Athens had hardly any bars downtown. There was the Odyssey, and the Yacht Club and The Last Resort and the GA Bar, and a few more. You could get beer at one of three clubs (40 Watt, Uptown, Rockfish Palace) in town and at restaurants and that was pretty much it. I have a hard time even coming up with ten. Things are different now. I think when I pulled up 'bars near me' on Yelp while walking downtown I got 63 hits. So, these days choice is not the problem. Too many choices, on the other hand... Here's some info that might help you decide. Flicker is a great little bar. It's friendly and casual and just generally informal. It is split into halves; one side has a small stage and a movie screen, the other side has the bar and some chairs and sofas and such for socializing. The clientele tends to be the arty crowd. It's not terribly loud so talking with people is possible. The music and/or movies are on the other side so people blabbing away won't interfere with your enjoyment of the entertainment. The beer selection is small but good and they have a full bar, along with a fun list of cocktails they will make for you. The bartenders are also willing to be flexible and make drinks not on "the board". Prices are reasonable, the staff is friendly, the popcorn is hot and fresh (not nuked!) and free. It is also right next door to the 40 Watt, which makes for easy bar hopping. Plus, the bartenders made me Dark & Stormies all night long. How can you go wrong with a place like that?

Yelp
Situated almost next to the 40 Watt Club, Flicker is the perfect spot for catching a low key live-music performance, a flick, some cheap drinks and free popcorn. You're more likely to catch the creative set in here, than the frat/sorority kids. The vibe is very laid back and cool. Check out the local art on the walls and get another bag of popcorn.

Yelp
Me and my friends went out one night to see a friend play. We went to order drinks and the Bartender told us "This isn't a college bar, you Frat boys aren't welcome here". If people like that run the place, then no one should go. (Note: I'd give 0 stars if I could).

Yelp
Great spot, awesome bartenders. Great little venue for live shows due to a stellar sound professional that understands how to mic/mix.

Yelp
Kind of a small bar divided into two parts. The bar side has a few mismatched tables and chairs and some sofas. The other side hosts live music and shows movies, usually B flicks. Bartenders are very nice. On a busy night, it may be difficult to find a place to sit. Free popcorn. Very much a "townie" or "hipster" place with lots of regulars.

Yelp
For as cool and quirky as Athens can be, there's a sad dearth of great interesting bars. This bar has great prices and friendly people complemented by spectacular decor, particularly in the bathrooms. All too many bars in town are full of frat brahs and their dates, both of whom may well be named Brooks. This, along with a handful of other places in town, is for everyone else.

Yelp
Love on Flickr for the attentive & warm service as well as the awesome free popcorn.

Yelp
This place will always be dear to my heart, because it is where I first tried sweet tea vodka. Like many, if not most bars in Athens, the drinks are inexpensive (I had a $5 Makers Mint Julep here during another visit), and the bartenders and patrons are super friendly. There is plenty of seating inside or nice storefront seating outside - where everyone seems to see someone they know.

Jason D.

Yelp
I went in the Bar and the First impression I got was better call John Taffer. I asked for a drink, the Bartender was kind of rude. When I got my Drink I saw a Cockroach in my Beer! I wouldn't go back there unless Fear Factor paid me to.

Yelp
One of my favorite bars in Athens! From the decor to the drinks to the free popcorn to the Pac Man table to the board games (although admittedly - the quality and quantity of those has dwindled over the years), this is definitely an Athens landmark! Long live the Flicker!
