The Best Portland Food Cart Pods for Rainy Days | Eater Portland

"Easy to miss near I-205 on-ramps, food pod Flipside Bar and Carts is one the gems of Southeast Portland’s Lents neighborhood, hosting eight food carts on a compact lot. Standout dishes onsite include Sabor Tindureño’s complex Oaxacan mole, Laotian Cambodian Golden Triangle’s spicy lime steak, or one of the best value chirashi bowls in town at Kenbu. The bar itself is spacious and modern, featuring some lovely views of the surrounding neighborhood. Flipside is just a block from a Max stop, as well as a short walk to similarly stellar food hall The Zed." - Nathan Williams

Where to Find Super-Nostalgic Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup in Portland - Eater Portland

"Heather Dana and Chris Bozzo offer a multitude of grilled cheese sandwich choices at this Flipside food cart, from a mac’ n bacon version to a PB&J grilled cheese. The couple’s classic offering is served on Portland French’s rustic bread with a quadruple cheese mixture of cheddar, pepper jack, provolone, and havarti. Bozzo’s secret-recipe tomato soup is pureed with dairy and topped with cracked pepper, parmesan cheese, and slices of avocado." - Joy Church

Google
Really great place to grab a drink & also good options on foods . Love the customer service & plenty to choose from. It’s a chill place to visit & grab a bite to eat . Decent pricing & good portions on food. I have yet to try two of the carts there but hopefully soon I’ll be able to.

Stopped by Flip Side Bar and had the Butterfly Effect cocktail so good! I didn’t try any food, but the drink alone was worth the visit. The music was a bit loud for chatting, but the overall vibe was fun and casual great spot to hang out

Google
Having food carts right outside the bar is one of the best decisions ever. While the options aren't the best, E-San has great Thai food. The signature cocktails were very good and the rooftop seating is pretty good as well. The only negative thing about it is the location, as you're pretty close to the 205 entrance so there's a lot of traffic passing by.

Google
A nice variety of food carts with a/c indoor seating in the bar. You can sit inside to have your food even if you're not buying drinks. In warm weather the upstairs is open air seating with a second bar. Parking can be tough on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Google
Flipside Food Carts, with its rooftop bar, is a standout among my favorite food cart spots. While it may not have a massive array of carts, it certainly offers a diverse selection. What sets it apart is the inclusion of both indoor and outdoor seating areas that welcome minors, making it a great choice for families. Moreover, the addition of video poker machines adds an extra layer of entertainment to the experience. Flipside Food Carts truly has it all – a fantastic variety of food options, a welcoming atmosphere for all ages, and a touch of gaming fun. It's a place that never disappoints.

Google
This is a very cute 2 story bar. It has many food trucks selling an assortment of cuisines just outside. The bar allows you to bring food in. The bar has a variety of beer and specialty drinks about every month. There is not alot of parking, but during the week, The Flipside is pretty chill.. Keep in mind that The Flipside gets extremely busy on Friday and Saturday evenings. Have fun!

Had the most AMAZING creation from Kenbu Sushi! A sushi panini and it was out of this world phenomenal 😲🤯🥰 The layers of flavor and texture whet spot on perfect! The use of rice as bread worked well as the crisp was thick enough to hold it all together. Also had a lovely fish and chip order. Fresh HUGE pieces if cod in a delicious batter that wasn't heavy at all. Kudos to the chef. Their coleslaw and tarter sauce was perfect! Finally I paired my food with a Blueberry and Pear Cider from Schilling and a MAUI Dragon Fruit Seltzer which was light and refreshing. Loads of spaced out seating. A great place to grab some food and a drink!

Google
The particular food cart I purchased from was unfriendly, but the bar itself was great. The lady working was very friendly, and aware of all her customers at one time. The strawberry margarita was fantastic.

Yelp
i came here for drag bingo and it was super fun. Henny, the drag queen, was super nice and an entertaining host. i had the seasonal lavender lychee martini and it was pretty good. it was such a unique flavor combo, especially for a cocktail. seating here can be pretty limited. we arrived to the event 30 mins late and the only seats left were occupied by a water bottle which was the only reason why they weren't taken but no one was actually sitting there. it's also really hard to find parking. i parked in the planet fitness lot and it was fine but i would be wary

Yelp
Bar is great ambiance with good drink specials- The Fusion pizza cart looks promising ( there was a guy raving about how good the Banh mi pizza was !!) -our go to will always be Kenbu sushi - they rival or beat any sushi restaurant in town- will post more tomorrow after bringing our friends for lunch...

Yelp
We really enjoyed the food selection from the food trucks. The bartender was very nice and prices were extremely reasonable. Kid friendly and the several booths allow for a little more space but there are also tall and short tables. The space was comfortable but will say the bathrooms need a little more love and care and didn't seem overly clean and haven't aged well. Aside from that we definitely will be back.

Z D.

Yelp
Nice food cart pod and sports bar vibe. Definitely will go again. Friendly staff as well.

Yelp
The concept is good, and the carts give you a variety of options. However when we arrived a couple of the carts weren't open, and there was no waitstaff attending the rooftop bar so we had to keep going downstairs to order drinks and get refills on our water. And noise from the road below made it a bit less enjoyable. We got food from the Shawarma grill. It was good, but nothing that I'd make the drive for again.

Yelp
Brilliant Trendy venue in Southeast Portland with partnered with several Food Carts to satisfy your culinary cravings. I believe Flipside started in 2018. I'm not sure if the Food Carts here are permanent or if they rotate. "LOCAL CARTS. GLOBAL CUISINE. Satisfy all your cravings with an array of global cuisines to choose from. Join us for lunch, dinner, late night food...and of course, dessert! Our carts were carefully selected to offer our customers the best food in town. BEER, WINE, COCKTAILS. No great meal is complete without a nicely paired craft beer, glass of wine, or cocktail. We have 16 beers on tap, Northwest wine, and a full bar with delicious craft cocktails. Check out our Instagram here or Facebook here for weekly specials!" - https://www.flipsidebarpdx.com/ The venue itself in not very large and the parking lot can get a bit cramped. On a busy day one might have to secure parking on the streets or surrounding area. A healthy selection of drinks are available inside at the bar. The Food Carts are located outside, order your food and pick it up when it's ready. There is a decent amount of seating inside along with a good amount of TV's so one can enjoy events being broadcasted. The rooftop patio area was closed I visited, freezing Oregon Winter...damn YOU!! Not all the Food Carts were open either... At the time of my visit Dec. 2021 there was Thai, Japanese, Jamaican, BBQ, and Middle Eastern cuisine available. I couldn't tell if some of them were on vacation or permanently closed. I'll find out on my next visit...wherever that will be...

Yelp
Have you ever eaten sushi from a food truck? If you're like me you're thinking "Of course not!". Well let me tell you, this sushi truck is worth the stop. I looked over the menu and asked about the selection on the shashimi plate. Normal salmon/tuna combo but with shrimp(meh). So I went with the Chirashi Bowl! I'll be honest, I was very reluctant but all the fish was fresh and delicious. I am not a huge salmon fan anymore but their salmon wash very nice. The slices are on the thinner side but the freshness was on point! (Side note from a Chef: The freshest fish is always on Thursday's and Fridays unless they purchase directly from fishing boats! Avoid Monday and Tuesday specials at ALL seafood joints!) The soy sauce was a tad salty for my liking but I don't like the taste of salt! Overall, best sushi truck experience I've ever had! Also the first!

Yelp
Very nice food carts with a bar the bar has upstairs seating for the rooftop to view the city from above. There is about eight carts here. The service was fast.

Laura H.

Yelp
The vibes here are so good! The building is modern, clean, and a nice spot to hang out. The drinks at the bar are fabulous! I went mid day in a week day and it was pretty dead though. There were only two carts open and I didn't like either of there options, so I just got a delicious drink! I gave it a four star because it's so limited during the week/day by not having many carts open. But if you want drinks, this is your place! The bartender was also super sweet!

Yelp
We came to Flipside for a sushi dinner (Kenbu Sushi - that'll be another review). Got our pagers and decided to try upstairs. This was a Tueday evening, about 5:30 - ish. Be forewarned - the upstairs is NOISY around traffic time. Which is most of the time, considering it's location. Conversation can be difficult, but the venue is attractive otheriwse. Another group who was sitting a few tables away decided to take their meal downstairs to the inside (non-open air) tables. I totally get that. Regardless, I'd expect that there's some quieter time to sit upstairs but rish hour ain't it.

Yelp
This is the greatest thing to happen to my side of town! Even though Portland has become a dumpster fire - we still have our amazing food carts! And the ones we have at Flipside are such a great combo with this family friendly restaurant-bar. The restaurant-bar does not serve food. It is an area to eat your food cart order and order your drinks. Thank God Flipside survived the covid shut downs because I love taking friends here for the array of foods and open-air seating upstairs (meaning, it has a roof but open sides). Heat lamps mean you can dine up there year round. For sports lovers, they always have on the game or fight. Every time I go in they have a different drink of the day. Last time it was a pear mule. The time before that, a raspberry mule. I am always down to try something new and so I order off the drink specials board. If you live in the area, you know how cool this place is but if you don't - venture over to the East side to try indoor-outdoor food cart and bar fun!

Yelp
The atmosphere is so fun and the rooftop bar is a cool little spot to chill. The cart Food was delicious and the drinks were gorgeous!

Angel G.

Yelp
Fantastic selection of different and popular cuisines! It has a great, covered dining building with all services available

Melinda M.

Yelp
Can be a bit noisy and crowded but the place is a great option for meeting up and having all the options for food.
google avatar

Leti O.

Yelp
My go to spot for a drink and food cart food! My favorite carts are e-San Thai and the sushi cart! Pad kee mao and the crab roll are my favorites! The drink specials are always great!

Yelp
Full Bar with $1 off Happy Hr 3-6PM, M-F if you check your bill! Our discount didn't happen realizing too late. Cocktail list is full of sugar and spice and not necessarily in an inventive twist, prices hovering $8-10. Nice clean bar and in the midst of the dark cold winter, the rooftop was closed, as were several carts giving us a choice of 3 - Japanese, Thai and Mexi. Note their ramen broth is house made so a must try nex time. Beef Pad Kee Mao handed me a decent jaw workout and flavor was just ok, as in pan not hot enough to impart noodles or meat the quick intense heat treat. Hubby's burrito had less meat than he would of liked over rice and bean, 1:5 ratio and not enough seared flavor profile. Overall a good filler in the pod and cart scene, better to Have than Have not, especially in Lents area with a full bar, but bring some recipes if don't want liquored punch. Next time might be great with cart change up and more that are open and a more sophisticated bar program.

Yelp
Cool little bar in outer SE. They stay busy for a weekday. They have an upstairs with a bar which I thought was cool. The downstairs is much larger. Service is quick and good. They seemed to be a new hip place which wasn't my jive.
google avatar

Alan S.

Yelp
First time here. The food cart is a bit spendy, $15 for wonderful tomato bisque soup and an equally gourmet grilled cheese sammy. My date loved both and took home leftovers. My fresh made burger with a small order of curly fries came under $13. Burger was great, well done and I'd order the Blue Fromage again. Beers were shy of $6 a pint. Service was friendly and fast. The parking is challenging and if you have a big vehicle you'll take up everything between the lines. Overall a good experience.
google avatar

Dan R.

Yelp
Nice new building, big windows, and more upstairs. Looked like a good selection of hard alcohol. A tap list would be nice. The beer i had--one i've had several times of the years and enjoyed--didn't taste that good. It's a holiday beer so maybe just old--so why are they pouring it? Friendly bartender. Looks like a nice range of food carts, but the one i tried (fish, clams and chips) was also a 3 star.

Yelp
This was our first time at this place. We thought it was great. The food carts were all first rate, and having the bar right there that you can go inside to eat was a real plus. We went to the rooftop bar which was a treat, but it's really loud from the traffic and their music was blasting, which is why we were the only ones up there - That was the only downside. I had the pad Thai, spicy streak, and sushi and baklava- all super yummy.

Smug A.

Yelp
Fun neighborhood bar, lots of locals. Bartenders are cool. Most of the food carts have delicious food.

Megan M.

Yelp
I really like the combination of food carts and an accesible indoor bar. Good option for groups. Falafel wrap from shawarma grill was great :)
google avatar

Lindsey W.

Yelp
I live a few blocks away and I've been in a few times now. It's definitely the most popular bar in Lents. It gets busy on Friday and Saturday nights and during Blazer games. Best parts about this place: -New and clean space -Various international food carts outside to order from -You can bring your food inside to eat or eat outside in the cart area -Cheap cocktail specials ($7-$8) -Bar staff is friendly -Upstairs patio bar with secondary bartender -TVs all around to watch sports games Only recommendation at this point would to be have another bartender on hand when it's busy. We were there for a Blazer playoff game and it took a little while to get service.
google avatar

Jamie S.

Yelp
The gentleman behind the bar was an absolutely wonderful. So kind and tolerated my lack of knowledge of beer selections. I'm really not that picky ... He offered a few sample options prior to my purchase. Finally I chose one and now here I sit waiting for my orders. While I'm here and if I may I say, the atmosphere is delightful. So clean and welcoming. I only wish they had more room to expand because I think these guys are really on to something. So far, this location is infinitely better than Cartlandia. Even with the parking (or lack there of) (and slight inconvenience of getting out of here). I promise you, the ambiance is worth the hassle. I'll let you know how the food went shortly. I'm still waiting.

Yelp
My husband and I have been going to Flipside Bar & Carts since they opened! We are always looking for new and fun places. The bartenders Chad and everyone else are always SO sweet and accommodating. Before COVID, they had live music and that's actually where my husband met one of his close friends that helped him get his very first show. This place has a place in our heart. Amazing cocktails, sweet owner, and great food carts! We love this place.

Yelp
Flipside is a perfect addition to this neighborhood. Food carts, beer on tap, and cocktails. Daily drink specials, tall boy specials, and happy hour. There's a rooftop bar, which is lovely during the warmer seasons, but they close early; I recall going back downstairs at 9pm. We come here for the food carts. Our favorites are E-San Thai, 76 BBQ, and Kenbu Sushi. It's great to order food, step inside Flipside to order drinks, and then grab a table and wait for the buzzer to go off or food to be delivered to you. A couple TVs downstairs and one up on the rooftop adds entertainment to our dinner. There's parking in the back lot but anything larger than a compact SUV will be a tight fit. A plus for us and our friends is kids are allowed. Whether we want to stop somewhere for just a drink, order food to go, or relax indoors and eat, our decision most of the time is Flipside.
google avatar

Molly C.

Yelp
We have been coming here for a few years now. The bartenders are friendly and their NW Berry Mule is AMAZING! We enjoy grabbing food from the carts and coming in to eat and drink. It's a very fun family date.

Katelyn L.

Yelp
This is a cool place. They have carts on the outside of a few different kinds of foods. And then inside they have a full bar. The dining area is nice and modern, inviting. Definitely a place I'd try again once the climate of the world changes!
google avatar

Katie R.

Yelp
Keep The Change - Be The Change cart at flipside is a warm your tummy, comfort food haven! Tonight was my first visit, although I've enjoyed the other cart selections available at flipside, I'll definitely be going back here for more. I ordered the classic grilled cheese with bacon and an exceptionally large bowl of tomato bisque and the servings are shareable! Better yet, take it home for a second meal. The crispy bread, oooey gooey, melty cheese with the salty bite of the bacon was a classic childhood in my mouth, but This time It's gourmet grown up style! The bisque was thick and creamy and perfect for dunking my grilled cheese into. After I settled into my sandwich a yummy dish of warm brownie with ice cream and whip cream arrived at my table. What a wonderful treat. Thank you!
google avatar

Leilani F.

Yelp
Cute little venue with good beer, food and company. I am visiting Portland for work and I stopped by here around 10 pm. It was such a positive environment but the only downside were the homeless people trying to sell stuff to people who are trying to eat there food. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE SUSHI PLACE!!!

Brandi S.

Yelp
So so fun!! Beautiful bar in a great location with yummy drinks, great service, cool music and delicious food carts just steps outside the door!
google avatar

Tristan T.

Yelp
Bar: phenomenal. Enough said. Carts: too expensive for the amount and quality of food you get. I got a sushi bowl for 10 dollars, and half of my small bowl was rice and half of it was salad. Why does a sushi bowl have salad in it?? Would be one star if the bar was not here.
google avatar

Joe Y.

Yelp
Nice and clean and new. A great addition the Lents neighbor. They have a full bar and a good set of taps . The carts are interesting
google avatar

Deacon K.

Yelp
This place is new, clean, and great atmosphere. Sandy, the downstairs bartender is amazing!!! Very attentive and friendly. Has a lot of experience I can tell. She is very nice and extremely good at her job. It was busy and she was by herself and it didn't even phase her. All in all a great, new place to go. Hopefully she works every time I come in. Food carts are amazing too.

Hutch H.

Yelp
A great addition to the neighborhood, Flip Side is a solid bar with a modern but simple look. 4 food vendor carts offer food as of June 2018, with room for 2 more. The lot is shared with a row of half a dozen townhouses near completion, so the parking might be less available in premises in the near future. There were a couple TVs for the sports, and the ground floor allows minors during certain hours. Upstairs, though, is reserved for adults, and has a cool balcony thing. The beer selection is respectable, and reasonably priced. Plenty of bang for your buck.

A R.

Yelp
Decent food truck collection, but if you could replace JW Fish n Chips with a more consistent fish n chips truck, actually there during their posted hours that'd be fantastic! The disappointment driving to you only to have a beer cause JW rarely honors their business hours really drags you down.
google avatar

Jacqué P.

Yelp
Pulled into this little cart haven for something to grub on real quick. I wasn't disappointed. I would've loved to get more food for me $ but I think my eyes were bigger than my stomach because I waited way too long to eat something today. Definitely a cute little spot for a first date, after work shit talking or catching up with an old friend. My friend got the Chicken Teriyaki and said it was real good considering it was a food truck.
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
Love coming here. Bartenders are always friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. Having the food carts available just makes it a great place to have a few drinks and eat with friends.
google avatar

Becky S.

Yelp
On Tuesday 10 of us walked over to the Flipside for lunch...this was my first time there since they opened a year ago because the parking is no-existent. Sadly, the inside part of the restaurant was closed due to an employee testing positive for Covid-19. We made the best of the situation, ordered lunch from the only 3 carts that were open and sat outside to eat. My lunch was fabulous and the others lunches looked equally good! I would go again in a minute if only there was a place for this disabled person to park!
google avatar

Anna S.

Yelp
Love everything about this place! Variety of carts, full bar. So much quality. Thai, sushi, Mexican, American, Greek. 10/10 just go check it out!
google avatar

Araceli G.

Yelp
I love their food here BUT I HATE HOW THE ROOFTOP IS ALWAYS CLOSED. Why bother even having a rooftop if its closed 99% of the time...
google avatar

Jordan F.

Yelp
Both the carts and the bar are great! Good food at a good price, the ambiance of the bar(s) are great and the bar tenders are spot on. Definitely like the mexican food cart best as the guy who runs it is an actual chef and every detail is spot on.
google avatar

Melissa R.

Yelp
The 1776 bbq was terrible...all fat and gristle. The corn fritter was good tho and the guys were nice just not into tough fat sliders. The bar was unfriendly and empty...go figure. Too bad it's a good idea and building is cool just not worth the parking hassle.
google avatar

Portia S.

Yelp
The shwarma original with added spicy tzatziki is the best I've had in Portland. It's the red food cart on the left!!
google avatar

Julie K.

Yelp
Good lil place to grab a drink or watch a game after work for happy hour. It's a good place for groups and never seems over crowded.
google avatar

Francis N.

Yelp
I've only had good experience. Not every art is what I'm always looking for, but I love the sushi cart and everything else I've tried has been what I'm looking for. Love the top floor bar area. Great for chilling with friends. Friendly staff. I've gone with my dog, my friends and my family.
google avatar

Cally A.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and good food! So happy to have this place in the neighborhood! We had the sushi food cart and it was excellent!! Highly recommend.
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
This bar/food cart area is a great neighborhood standby. The upstairs bar is perfect for a sunny day and is especially nice if you can stay for the sunset. The trivia on Mondays at Flipside is fun and choosing from 5-6 food carts if you're hungry is a great option. I love that Flipside is so close by!

Kelly W.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the rooftop bar! Went on a Monday night and it was not crowded. Good food options. Everyone enjoyed the experience.
