Where to Find the Best Carajillos in Houston | Eater Houston

"Specializing in Mexican cuisine, this spot offers a spiced, citrusy rendition of the carajillo that pairs perfectly with scenic views of Buffalo Bayou Park. The cocktail is recommended as an after-dinner sip and is often suggested alongside the molten molcajete chocolate cake, which is served with ice cream laced with orange peel for a complementary citrus-chocolate finish." - Brittany Britto Garley

This place is a gem! The inside is so cozy, welcoming, and artsy. The husband is a talented artist whose pictures line the walls. The food is so good! With the dozens of Spanish spots around, this place stands out in flavor and authenticity. I feel like some restaurants make bulk food, and there is no love and a lack of traditional flavor. However, the wife hand-cooks each item and even customized my order due to a restriction. Both husband and wife are passionate and are such good people to talk to. I loved the “everything” empanada with the beans, rice, and pork. I can’t wait to try the other dishes.

Google
Absolutely incredible!! If you are visiting or living in Lancaster you HAVE to come here!! The place was so cozy and felt like home. Food was phenomenal (I highly recommend the bacalaito, empanadas, mofongo and paella!!) Also the cafe con leche was the best I've had. The service was amazing too, my family and I would come here everyday if we could🤭 (Sorry I am NOT a professional photographer lol)

Dan C.

Google
Best empanada we have had. The bacalaitos were a first and I highly recommend. Both entrees were fresh and inventive mixes. We were told you can't go wrong with this menu and I'd say that appears true. The spot is comfortable and cozy although perhaps all decor is not for everyone. Well worth your time to check this spot out.

Google
There is not one bad thing I can say about Floras (aside from wanting them to be open longer into the evening). Everything about our experience from the service to the incredible food was fantastic. We started our dinner with the beef and cheese and the everything empanada. Each empanada packed amazing flavor. For our entrees I ordered the pernil and I don’t have words to describe how delicious it truly was. My husband ordered the mofongo which was equally as good! Don’t forget to order a side of tostones! My husband and I will be going back because there are so many items on the menu that we want to try.

Google
Such an awesome little spot! Lived here for years and never entered: my mistake! Flora and co have amazing food in a quaint art gallery. The menu changes from time to time, so be ready for exciting options. I had the Cuban on jibarito, and I was blown away. They expertly mixed the flavors and the jibarito added a nice crunch. BYOB!

Google
A lovely lunch spot with friendly hosts! The mar y tierra was delicious. Highly recommend a dessert that pairs pepper jack cheese and guava in a pastry.

Google
Wow! All I can say is that the food does not disappoint! The flavors are incredible, the authenticity of the food is spot on, and the presentation was beautiful. The service was wonderful, as Randy took great care of our family. I can’t wait to go back and see what Flora’s serves next!

Google
Great Great experience! The ambiance was beautiful as was the art work. The decor was brilliant. The use of bongos as the table base was so Very creative! Very personal service...our server was very knowledgeable and super attentive. Very inviting. We were able to chat with the owners and felt like our family was extended 😁❤ Food was FANTASTIC!! I took my mom & niece and they enjoyed The experience immensely. The restaurant is nestled into a beautiful quiet block in Lancaster with parking just around the corner. Go...you won't be disappointed at ALL! We will return Flora's! 💜

Yelp
Wonderful cozy experience with well prepared food offering wonderfully blended flavors. Service was very warm and welcoming.

Yelp
The food is delicious and definitely new for my taste pallet. I always love trying new places and foods; This was no exception. The vibes are great with a moody, classy energy to the design of the restaurant. The server was lovely and took great care with their food recommendations. I had the lamb, which was delicious! I would go here again if I'm in the area!

Yelp
The food is absolutely amazing and the owners very warm and friendly! Great ambience with pretty artwork!

Yelp
We had tried to come here for the last couple of years because I'm half Puerto Rican I always love finding home cuisine. The restaurant is very cute and feels like walking into you're titi's kitchen. The service is super sweet and attentive from the moment you call to make a reservation. They were also very accommodating with seating because hubby can't sit on stools because of his back. They started us off with refreshing infused water and promptly opened & poured our wine. We started with 2 appetizers...1st Pupusa - corn meal patty grilled and topped w/ cheddar pickled cabbage & avocado...it was dry & avocado was hard, nothing like the authentic ones which are from El Salvador; 2nd Bacalaitos - Alaskan cod fritter and they were delish. Our entries were... Carne Frita - fried boneless pork chops tossed in our Sweet Heat and served w/rice & beans and he added a side of sweet plantains. Hubby thought his food was tasty & good but not great. AND Mofongo Relleno - fried plantain mashed with garlic, yuca and seasoning then fried again and stuffed with choice of meat or veggies and served w/ rice and beans...I choose PERNIL - marinated roasted pork. I thought my dish was delicious and enjoyed every bite. We took dessert to go...pineapple upside down cake...hoping it's tasty AND will update. Overall good Puerto Rican food with wonderful service and reasonable prices.

Yelp
Floras is a cute little spot in downtown Lancaster. This place definitely has a lot of potential. The tables are really cute. The base is actually some type of drum. The food was good and very flavorful but a little too salty for my liking. Empanadas were good as was the pernil and maduros. The servers we had could benefit from some training. They were not very knowledgeable about the menu and they were not the most attentive.

Paul S.

Yelp
Good location near Mt Joy in Pennsylvania . Prices very reasonable and cakes were delicious. RX: locations in Florida, FLL.Perfect delicious beach snack with good container for beach. Sold frozen and ready to eat less than 15 minutes with great container/ sand toy for kids. I'm too old to invest at this time but think it might work for the area until water takes over beach! Yelp
I have celiac and a soy allergy. We wanted to do something different for date night. After looking at the menu , then confirming with the restaurant. This was definitely the place we wanted to go. It did not disappoint. This small quaint restaurant hidden in Lancaster was absolutely a must go to . We learned that chefs were the owners, and they prepared everything fresh. The downside to that is they are only open 3 days a week. Friday, Saturday, and Monday . The prices and portions were perfect. I guess I know where I'll be eating 3 days a week.

Yelp
Delicious food very nice staff I would go back for sure, if you like Pernil I recommend this place was so delicious.

Sew H.

Yelp
This place was recommended by some friends. I was totally unexpressed by it. The service was good, but for me the food was just okay. I love Spanish/Mexican food. Having eaten a lot of it in Texas, this place didn't even come close. I never went back again. It's very quaint, but in a residential neighborhood, which makes parking a little difficult.

Yelp
Authentic Latin food. Perfect portion sizes, delicious flavors and excellent service are just a few of the things that make this place stand out. From apps to dessert, we were so full and so satisfied I don't think we will eat the rest of the day. They also have infused water cucumber, orange, lime and strawberry- it's fresh and delicious! It's a BYOB and if you bring in your own liquor and wine they will mix you up some tasty sangria. This place is perfect and right where you can find close, free parking!
google avatar

Heidi G.

Yelp
It was okay. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back. Had the Cuban sandwich with bean and rice with a tres leches for dessert. Extremely slow service. Street parking only. Cute decor. Good portion sizes.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by Flora's for lunch. Their Tripleta was full of flavor and the bacalaitos were delicious. Give them a try. Cozy environment, great service and food.
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
Food was very good. It's always impressive when the rice and beans stand out even as a side. Everything was very flavorful. The lamb chops were a standout. They were thick cut and cooked perfectly. Our server was very nice. Loved the artwork on the walls. Very cozy dining room. I'd definitely come back again.
google avatar

Yelp
We love Flora's. The vibe is dope, the sweetest people, the food is beautiful and delectable, and the lamb chops were prepared exactly to temp! We took home a bottle of their habanero hot sauce which was also amazing. A thin, red wine, citrus substance I have never experienced as a hot sauce lover. Can't wait to cook with it -- thinking salad dressing, sauce base enhancer. This place should be first on the list of go-tos!

Martin S.

Yelp
You need to update the hours on your website indicating that are closed on Mondays. I just walked a mile each way to find that you are closed on Mondays!
google avatar

Yelp
I love Flora's! This is one of the best neighborhood gems! I've never had a meal that I didn't enjoy. It is best to call and make a reservation or get there as soon as she opens. The space is small and there is usually a steady crowd of folks. Monday's are especially busy because of the all you can eat. Five types are offered, you start with three and then you may order one additional at a time. Be sure to ask for the sauces! Two are aioli based and the other two, salsa-like. The empanadas are packed full and very filling. Like all five, but the traditional beef and cheese are my favorite. BYO. They also have a sangria mix that they will prepare with your bottle of wine. Yum, yum, yum! This place is great for lunch or dinner!

Yelp
Flora's is on point if you want authentic Latin American food. Our party of seven all tried different things on their menus and everything we ate was excellent and tasty. Team members were friendly, and the owners are warm hearted people. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Food was excellent! The owner came out and spoke with us and showed us her husbands beautiful paintings that's he painted and hung in the Resturant. Really good food

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful food -- we were very impressed with the flavorful, well-prepared dishes we ordered! In a town where a large percentage of restaurants close extremely early, we were thrilled to get a table without a reservation about an hour before Flora's closed. However, it took nearly ten minutes after we were seated to get a greeting and some water from the waitstaff. We were just about to walk out when we were finally noticed by the staff and put our order in. We were in the small back room with two other parties -- one a table of five, another a table of three. It was insanely loud and echo-y back there; we were seated at a very small table for two and still had trouble hearing each other. Perhaps some acoustic tiles on the ceiling or the walls or upholstered chairs would tame the noise at bit? When the table of five finished their meal and left, we hoped it would get better, but the table of three continued bellowing on very loudly (almost as if they were talking to each other from opposite ends of a 20-foot hallway). Amazingly, they were commiserating in great detail about their early experiences with consuming racy internet content as teens. For their sake, I hope they were really drunk -- if not, their judgment is non-existent and/or their entitlement is off the charts. Was this performance art, or actually real? We weren't sure. We finally stopped even trying to have a conversation as the trio compared notes on their efforts to hide their internet histories from their parents during the 90s, with varying degrees of success. Once we got over our annoyance at not being able to have a conversation, the no-filter dinner theatre was actually pretty entertaining. Better acoustics in the room might have tamed the issue somewhat, yes, but certainly couldn't have fixed it. But ... our compliments to the chef! Our meals were delicious!

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches! Nice gem in Lancaster, great for an out of town visitor. Sandwiches are great

Yelp
I was doubting this place at first, but my husband and brother insisted. I am so glad we went. The food was amazing. Everything is made to order and it was fantastic. Beef empanadas were the best! I had the paella and it was the best paella I ever had. Dessert we got sweet dreams which was fried plantain with a scoop of vanilla, coconut and salted caramel pretzel ice creams. I usually do not like anything with bananas or plantains, but this was sooo good. The restaurant looks like a cute little townhouse that was converted and the decor is nice. Very clean and nice atmosphere. Tables were cool, the stand under tables were big drums.

Yelp
I've continued to frequent here over the years. Nothing has changed! The best food in Lancaster hands down. Every meal I have had has been made perfectly and the flavors are unmatched in the area. If you haven't visited yet, make sure you do. I would recommend a reservation and the following menu items: yuca fries, lamb chops, tripleta (lunch only), el bote hundido!

Greg M.

Yelp
The service was a little slow- they had one waiter for five tables and the tostones appetizer came out after we were done eating the entrees. We had the Cuban sandwich and the spicy mango pollo. Both entrees were excellent. The mango salsa had a nice jalapeño kick and the chicken was well grilled. We were impressed at how crispy the bread was and how tender the meat was on the Cuban sandwich. The sandwich was huge. Normal people could split it and both be satisfied.

Yelp
Ordered the pineapple stuffed with veggies, rice, and shrimp and the bacalaitos (codfish fritters). They were both FANTASTIC. The shrimp was cooked to perfection and all the flavors blended very well. The fritters were crispy, salty (in a good way), and the sauce that came with it really balanced it out. Owners are friendly and the food was ready exactly when they said it would be (we did takeout) which is pretty important for me. Oh and the atmosphere in there is so nice. The sea blue accent walls alongside the black, plus all the art gave me an energized feeling. Will be dining in next time for sure. I was told I wouldn't be disappointed and I definitely wasn't.

Yelp
We had dinner for 5 people Everything is just okay , everything is over priced Not worth the $30 average per entree

Lisa R.

Yelp
The jibarrito was delicious! My friend had the yucca friends and said they were great also

Yelp
We made reservations for a table of 5, one of which was a child under 5. Flora's is BYOB and made a sangria with our white bottle of wine. We loved the sangria, it was delicious for being made on the spot. Side note, we were very happy with our waitresses this evening. Both of the waitresses were very pleasant, helpful, and really added to our dining experience. We are also always impressed when the owner or chef takes time to hold a conversation beyond "how was everything". You can tell that good food and great service is a passion of the owner. We ordered two seafood empanadas and one vegetable empanada to share. The seafood is outrageously good and was a huge hit with the youngest member of the group. We also ordered three orders of the Wow Cob, delicious! It was a very sizable ear of corn with a cilantro spread, Swiss cheese, and paprika. Between the group we ordered the Lamb Chops, the Curry Salmon, Ropa Veja, and the Stuffed Avocado. The best review we can give is that there was nothing left on our plates, not even a single grain of rice. Every bite was some how better than the one before. The lamb basically melted in your mouth and the stuffed avocado made for the perfect bite, every bite. While there is no kids menu, the chef/owner offers to make alterations to the menu to fit a "child's meal". Our son was able to get a plain ear of corn and a plain chicken breast. Although, he did surprise us with housing the seafood empanada. We can not wait to come back and will recommend Flora's as a great location to grab a very enjoyable bite to eat.

Yelp
Do not come here after 8pm. Google says they close at 10 however the kitchen closes at 9:30. We got there at 9:20 and they refused to let us in. They informed us that because it was too slow they decided to close for the day. If you're running a business you can't just decide to close when it's slow when your business hours online say other wise. They do have great food if you can ever get a chance to get in when they decide to open.
google avatar

Yelp
Got takeout from here for NYE. It was FABULOUS. The food has amazing flavor, tastes fresh, just all-around delicious. And the service was lovely. Can't recommend enough.

Michelle U.

Yelp
Came out to visit Lancaster on vacation and decided to try Flora's. The food is authentic and beyond delicious, well seasoned and generous portions! The owners are lovely. I will definitely come back for more the next time I am in PA.
google avatar

Daniel P.

Yelp
Inventive latin; everything is super fresh and homemade. Lunch entrees are $12 to $16. Be careful with the limited days and hours - check carefully before coming.
google avatar

Kristof T.

Yelp
Been here two times. The first time was a bit forgettable. But this time I Remember everything - great service with a knowledgeable server, the pretty handwritten menu, the juicy pork (pernil) and grilled pork, flavorful empanadas, and the luscious desert: Nutella empanadas with peanut butter and ice cream. I appreciated the hot sauce for the empanadas but I personally need more excitement....keep it up!!!

Melanie S.

Yelp
I checked into my hotel, ran out of energy after a long day in the road, cancelled a reservation at a fancy restaurant, and took a chance with Flora's take-out. It was AMAZING!!! I grew up in Miami, so I have an idea what good black beans should taste like. Flora's nailed it! The chicken dish was delicious and just spicy enough to be interesting, and the sweet plantains tasted like home. Thank you for saving my first day of vacation in Lancaster!
google avatar

Mona H.

Yelp
To say Flora's is wonderful would be an understatement. The atmosphere was very friendly and laidback. Decor was very unique with stories behind them. The food was to die for due to being seasoned generously, great pairings, a unique spin, and being cooked to perfection. Flora managed to make already delicious dishes even more delicious. I love how she combines various cultures and flavors. I am glad we went with a recommendation for an appetizer because they managed to make a pupusa with so much flavor. Dessert was equally as delicious. I am often let down by dessert at restaurants, but my parents and I decided to take a gamble on sweet dreams (their version of a banana split) and the fried guava dessert. Holy moly! So delicious. As my father ate the guava dessert, he stated, "Wow, this is delicious. There are so many flavors happening it is like a party in my mouth!" Due to it being a small restaurant, I would try to make a reservation if possible. However, they managed to squeeze us in within 15 minutes.
google avatar

Yelp
Found this spot on Yelp when we were in town for the night. We loved it! The service was super friendly. The place was tight, but we didn't feel cramped. The food was DELICIOUS. We shared an empanada and it was as good as it gets. The sauces made it even better. Not sure what the white sauce was, but I cleaned out the container! My pernil was amazing and there was plenty leftover for take outs. The hubs lobster paella was full of meat and he too had plenty to take home. One bit of caution if you are price conscious, ask for the prices as they are not listed! We were a bit surprised, but could only blame ourselves for not asking, that the paella was $50. If my 30 year old self had eaten there and had that shock at check time, I would have been washing dishes.

Yelp
Wow, wow, wow. I have been very impressed by all of the times I've ordered from Flora's. I've thoroughly enjoyed dinner for my family and even made large pickup orders for my office of 20-30 employees.

Yelp
If you love Latin food Flora's is a must do in Lancaster. I received rave reviews about Flora's before checking it out for myself and was not disappointed. Everything was fresh, generously portioned, fairly priced, and most of all delicious. I could eat at Flora's every day! The menu is on the small side as they use fresh seasonal ingredients and so the menu is subject to change as well. They have both lunch and dinner hours. It's a tiny little space- about 6 or 7 four top tables along with 2 high tops that sit 4 ish and a couple of small 2 tops. Make reservations if possible as they definitely fill up! B.Y.O.B. On street parking only.

Yelp
Really excellent PR food. Interesting dishes and superbly well prepared. All served fresh in a great setting and outstanding service. Seafood empanadas are delicious but everything is worth a try.
google avatar

Cristene G.

Yelp
tucked off to the side you might go right it but you shouldn't. Stop in have a sandwich. They're excellent. Meaty, saucy, yummy. Had a Pernil and my colleague had a Tripleta. Both great. I got mine with a little green salad. It worked for us. Worth trying for sure.
google avatar

Mitch T.

Yelp
love this tiny place. I may be bias but I really like authentic and food from different cultures. A lot of my friends haven't tried it, they see the website and it kind of turns them off. I will say, it is weird. They try to be a art studio and restaurant. If they will take some advice, stick with the food, the art thing is holding you back. Put your menu on the website. Anyway to the food. Portions are just the right size for a couple to share a few apps and a dinner. We normally get empanada's to start. And we do not share these! Never share them you will just be wanting another. We share the Pebil with smashed plantains, probably the best latin pulled pork around. deserts are good, we alternate who gets to pick. Its also BYOB which we love.

Astrid M.

Yelp
I was hesitant about this place but wow! It's a tiny cozy place, byob very laid back atmosphere. The food was delicious (a bit salty for me). The dessert Reasonable price, our waitress was very nice and it's not the typical latin food place you can find in Lancaster. Definitely coming back!
google avatar

M. L.

Yelp
The cornflour pancake with a pickled slaw on top was a nice surprise of textures. I had the Pernil-the pork was so moist and delicious and the rice and beans perfectly spiced. My dinner companion enjoyed a spicy chicken breast with mango salsa. Great service, hope to return soon.

Yelp
Flora's is a beautiful place. I go typically for the all-you-can-eat empanadas on Mondays. The restaurant has a colorful yet clean style. The empanadas are like little works of art. Delicious. Food portraits. We usually try to eat outside. There are only two tables on the sidewalk. Today was a beautiful Fall day. The sun was shining, a cool wind was blowing, and the empanadas were great. The server was friendly and attentive. Flora's is a bit of a secret and it is hard sometimes to draw attention to a place because it means that seats become scarce. Yet, Flora's deserves the attention. It deserves an audience for its fine food aesthetic.
google avatar

Elliot L.

Yelp
Flora's has expanded their operation to a second location in Lancaster Marketplace on Fruitville Pike. Many traditional items are offered at their second location. Empanadas appear on the menu as well but these are air fried instead of deep fried. Two varieties exist: chicken and seafood. At $3 each one might think this price is steep for an empanada but I would have to argue with them for the ones offered here. These empanadas are stuffed! When you look at a cross section of them you will find no gaps, unlike other places which have little filling and an air pocket. The dough still comes out crispy in the air fryer. The fillings are stellar. Nicely sized chunks of shredded chicken bits of plantain, carrots, celery all are clearly visible and tasted in the chicken empanada. The seafood empanada has rice, peppers, herbs, cod and haddock. Both empanadas were seasoned perfectly and very satisfying. Two sauces are available as wellincluding a cilantro cream and ketchup/mayo sauce. Both are also very flavorful and accompanied the empanadas nicely.

Linda S.

Yelp
Another outstanding meal at one of Lancaster's charming neighborhood restaurants. Friendly, attentive service even during the busy lunch crowd. We arrived just before noon and by 1245 only one table remained available inside and outdoor tables were taken. Fresh ingredients cooked to perfection, generous portion size. We recommend the total package empanadas and the yuca fries for sure. The Sweet Dreams Dessert - a plantain coated in confectioners sugar and corn meal then flash fried and topped with ice cream and chopped strawberries - knocked our socks off! 10/10 recommend!

Cld F.

Yelp
Good food and amazing people. We had great time dining with Flora and staff. We both had roasted pork dishes which were fabulous.

Yelp
10 out of 10 ! Really ! The restaurant is small - so call early for reservation. The menu is new everyday! The food was PERFECT especially the Empanada! Actually, everything was great! You can't go wrong and you can BYOB! (only $5 set up fee) We celebrated our 23rd wedding anniversary here. See our pictures we uploaded - Brad's Pics. Annie enjoyed eating at the front window, too! We love to people watch. It was a fun evening! Thanks Flora - we will be back the next time we are in Lancaster, again! Brad & Annie James

Yelp
We were seated right away. The server was very nice and professional. We ordered the Paella and it did not disappoint. It was delicious. Very friendly staff and wonderful food and atmosphere. Will definitely be returning regularly.

Yelp
I cannot find enough good words to describe our visit here. We were immediately taken by the atmosphere- upscale without being stuffy. The waiters- two young men- were attentive and polite. Flora came out and spoke with each table, which I always admire in a smaller establishment. Two things that stuck out to me- the menu was clearly explained to us. We were not familiar with many of the words or foods, and our waiter took the time to explain them all. I appreciated that. ALSO, we brought our young son with us, and he was treated extremely well. Many will see a child brought to an establishment and figure they will be rowdy. Our son was treated like any other patron, which GREATLY impresses me. Rice and beans come with every meal. The menu is different every day, so check their website. Clearly, Flora has taken much time and effort in preparing every dish, and they are fresh and delicious.
