24-Hour Staycation Guide to Florence, South Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"Housed in a snazzy new spot on Cheves Street since 2014, the museum celebrates a decade of curated history and, while I was there, was showing the Recollect exhibition (open through December 2024)." - Denise K. James

Google
i adore this museum. their rotating art exhibits are always well-curated and it’s nice for different artists from around the area celebrated in an easily accessible (it’s free) environment. if you’re going before May 17th, 2026, i highly recommend visiting Cecil Williams’s exhibition. the historical exhibits are also very informative on some very interesting pieces of local history. the picture wall of locals and the giant tree trunk are some of my favorite installations in the whole of downtown Florence. i’m so happy we got the wonderful museum this town deserved. AND it looks great from the outside!

I didn’t know this museum existed but it was a great one to visit.

Fun, educational and surprising gem of a museum. Super interesting local history coupled with beautiful works of art. The museum is laid out very well. As you stroll through the exhibit by Johnson, you'll find a fascinating story of a talented man whose life and travels shaped his art.

Extensive history of the area and of the people who developed it. There are two exhibits of art currently on display in separate areas. (All artwork is pictured.)

Google
Beautiful place. It's very informative by giving information on how and who help with forming Florence and also some of the neighboring cities as well. My granddaughter did the scavenger hunt they had for people to do if they chose to. We had a great time, 90 minutes went by very quickly today!!!!

Great complement to Florence. There are plenty of parking spaces and interesting landscaping. Super clean, with the right blend of art and history.

Google
Great museum and very informative history in South carolina.I enjoyed the time I had here. Even though one side was closed it still was a nice size. The front desk staff did seem like they didn't want to be there other than that it was a nice museum to visit.

Yelp
Free admission . Closed on Mondays . Large objects are not allowed in the galleries like large bags, parcels, backpacks and umbrellas. Free lockers are available to store large belongings. Mobility accessible with both stairs and an elevator. My DAR chapter took a field trip to Florence County Museum because of their Revolutionary War gallery . The museum seems fairly new and modern . It offers two floors of galleries , exhibits and displays . The museum also offers interactive activities for both kids and adults like a museum scavenger hunt and activities in the museum courtyard. On the day we visited I was able to use indigo to dye a small planter and then plant a tomato seed in the planter . Nice , clean bathrooms and free parking . Plan to spend at least an hour or so here depending on how much you read and any activities you do .

Yelp
Small but elegant and brand new facility. Spacious but limited galleries. Lots of open space out of doors. Currently two featured galleries for fine art and several small galleries for history. Free to visit and friendly staff. Visit the museum and other local downtown restorations. Directly across from Francis Marion University Performing Arts Center and nearby are several fun dining opportunities. Florence Hotel is around the corner for accommodations. Handicapped accessible.
