I always like the feeling of walking into a bakery with the sweet smells, waiting for your ticket to be called, friendly counter help and walking out with a white box of fresh treats with a nicely tied string. It seems to me small independent bakeries are decreasing nowadays due to the big supermarkets. I absolutely love finding these authentic bakeries like Red Hook; whether they are Cuban, Jewish, Italian, French, etc. My sweet tooth is definitely multi culti.
I spoke with the Red Hook bakery staff and they get their ingredients directly from Israel. They make all sorts of Kosher goodies from rugelach to cookies to breads to bobka. I think their price point is fair, most items are weighed and you pay for what you get. I really loved the cookies, they are super fresh and delicious. Some unique items have halvah (toasted sesame seed paste) in the cookies. I have never seen that before, but went great with the chocolate. Another new one for me, a Jerusalem style bagel. It was huge, had a touch of sweetness and toasted sesame seeds.
They also have a full coffee bar, will try that next time.
They make special items only on Fridays - fresh challah and bobka. It's their busiest day and they go fast.
Thanks Red Hook!
