Sip on Mai Tais at Outside Lands’ Fancy New Tiki Bar | Eater SF

"I noticed Flour Craft San Anselmo, the popular gluten-free Marin bakery, will briefly close August 12–15 for a small remodel; when it reopens expect an expanded menu to match the bakery’s Mill Valley cafe, with plant-based breakfast and lunch items, gluten-free baked goods, pastries, and bread." - Ellen Fort

Google
Looking for fresh, delicious gluten free bread that isn't heavy, hard or super expensive? You found it! I love the vegan sourdough boule, crusty outside and chewy and moist inside, great for sandwiches - yes you can eat this as bread, it doesn't need to be toasted!

Google
I have been going to Flour Craft in San Anselmo since it opened and have enjoyed seeing it grow and serve our community. HOWEVER, I recently was very disappointed with the $11.00 granola bowl I ordered as take out. In the past FC’s yogurt bowls were filled with fruits of the season and lots of granola, yogurt and some drizzled honey. This one had about 8oz of yogurt, a little granola with strawberries- mind you, it’s JANUARY! Again, super disappointed because they can do MUCH better!

Google
Tasty snacks, all gluten free and many vegetarian options. Friendly staff makes the experience extra nice. A few benches outside make for nice café sitting experience (there are also seats inside, but I nearly always prefer the outdoor experience)

Google
Food is great but refused to take my $2 bill, claiming that they had no way to test for being counterfeit. 1) it costs $20-$30 to counterfeit paper currency, so doing this for a $2 bill would result in a loss 2) my total was $27, I paid with a $20, a $5 and the $2 bills. If they are so concerned about being counterfeit, why didn't they check the other bills 3) this is legal US currency tender, it should not be refused. Horrible policy and customer service

Google
An unexpected gem of a place and in one the sweetest little town’s on earth, San Anselmo, California. Service was outstanding and the selection offered unique and varied. I didn’t anticipate that gluten free would be so yummy! I had the orange/chocolate polenta cake. Wow! Was that a satisfying treat! And best of all no digestive issues for me, later on the way back home. Another thing about this bakery on San Anselmo Ave is that it is a place for locals. People as far as Lagunitas, stopped in to get a gluten free favorite. Another patron stopped in and picked up the bakery’s own made granola. I want to go back and have lunch, they have a lunch menu and make savory items. I also want to try there sourdough chocolate chip cookies. Get there early, parking is sparse. Downtown San Anselmo gets busy. Oh! And, they have gift cards available. This place is a nice healthy alternative to Starbucks for sure!

Google
I really love this place. I have a wheat allergy so it's super cool to pop in and grab a sweet treat knowing I won't have an allergic reaction! My favorite is the mudslide cookie. Would definitely recommend!

Google
I ordered a pistachio bread and a strawberry rhubarb cake. Pistachio was dryer than the Sahara. Took one bite and threw it out. Strawberry rhubarb was better than that but not good enough to not end up in the trash. Not worth the calories, so disappointed.

Google
Thrilled to find another GF bakery in the Bay Area. We had the foccacia sandwiches- which were delicious. I brought home to my family the lemon cake slice, a coconut cake slice and a berry bar. All of them were really great. It was late in the afternoon so I missed the brioche bread and croissants, but I'll be back to try them out. Bonus- lots of outdoor seating right next door in a shared public space.

Yelp
The chocolate orange polenta cake was good. I'd order it again as it was not that sweet. You can taste all the flavors. There were two things that needed improvement: 1. The service is just OK. It felt rushed. 2. It was hot outside and they kept the entrance door open which kept the inside warm. I was actually kinda sweating. I would have enjoyed the experience more if they kept the inside cool.

Yelp
A bit of a toss-up maybe. I have been here 2 times now. The second time I ended up not feeling well afterwards, but the first time I had no problems. I had their savory avocado toast and turmeric tonic. Just imagine sparkling water with lots of turmeric powder, and that's essentially their turmeric tonic. I thought it was unique haha. I've had espresso tonic and turmeric lattes before, but not turmeric tonic! Their savory avocado toast had cold smoked salmon (understandably salty), sliced cucumbers, and a bit of salad/lettuce, served as a bagel sandwich, open-faced. A bit hard, but the taste itself is good. I'll try a different item of theirs next time :)

Yelp
I'm going to make this a 2 point review. And I am going to preface this by stating that I have owned restaurants and have the pallet that could be considered "foodie like." When I am offered GF baked goods, I typically decline. This is one of the few GF bakeries that produces products that are not identifiable as GF. Do yourself a favor and give it a shot. From Sweet to savory, everything I have tasted is extraordinary. I also want to make a HUGE shout out to Elizabeth. She is at this bakery six days a week, and without her, this place would not have the sweet, welcoming, make-you-want-to-come-back vibe that it does. Not once have I seen her less than bright and smiley , and extraordinarily gracious with her energy. She is professional, kind, and provides amazing food service. Elizabeth is not the owner yet she treats Flour Craft guests as though she is. This establishment is very, very lucky to have her on the team. We are lifetime Flower Craft (and Elizabeth) fans !

Yelp
Absolutely amazing! This small, busy, GLUTEN FREE bakery sits in the old Mill Valley Lumber house. What we tried: Coconut Pineapple Cake. Fresh and moist!! And light, sweet flavors. 10/10 Orange Polenta Cake. Also most, filling but not dense, lightly sweet and not too over powering. Layers of chocolate laid on top. 10/10. Blueberry Crumble Muffin. Very mild and lightly sweet. Not too many blueberries. Great if you want something less sweet. 6/10. Recommend!!!

Yelp
Everything here is gluten free which is awesome, it's so hard finding places to trust in the bay area that are gluten free/celiac friendly. The staff who helped was super helpful, patient, and they also sell some GF friendly products as well, it was a very inviting and cozy spot with lots of options

Yelp
Love coming to flourcraft to try their different seafood tartines! . I recently tried the Bridgeway which was a exam salmon tartine with arugula! I normally don't like avocado on toast but well that went well! The toast included was also gluten-free and had a great butter crunch to it! There is limited seating inside and has a lot of local things you can buy!

Robert D.

Yelp
This is an ordinary coffee shop with over priced pastries not a bakery. When they open, they don't have any bread!

Yelp
Time and time again Heather and the team at Flour Craft impress me. They've made every holiday and birthday special for our gluten free family for the last ten years. The cakes, pastries, seasonal varieties and sourdough bread are fantastic. They've redone the store in San Anselmo to be open, modern and welcoming boasting the best ambiance around. I'm grateful that my mom found this place years ago! What sets this bakery apart from it's competitors is their willingness to create unique and delicious varieties, granolas, breads and savory tartines! Can't beat the staff friendliness, store cleanliness, pastry-chef creativity and baked goods consistency.

Yelp
We absolutely LOVE this gf bakery. Wow. The variety is great and the quality of her items is amazing. My 4 year old loved the doughnut, the brownie is moist and delicious and the avo salmon toast was a fav go-to breakfast option for us. So grateful this spot exists.
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
The food is bad. I'm sorry. The sourdough cookie and doughnut were both cloyingly sweet with nothing else to offer.

Yelp
I love a good gluten free bakery and I love a gf bakery that makes croissants even more!

Yelp
What a cute little shop! After a medical appointment in the area I decided I deserved a delicious lunch and stopped here. I ended up ordering more than the salad I intended to buy. The ice gingerbread cookies are so delicious. I am not gluten free but I am vegetarian and always am on the search for high quality baked goods. I'm always a little suspicious of things without gluten but if the sign didn't say it I would have no idea anything I bought was gluten free. The woman at the register (possibly the owner) was so wonderful! She definitely added to the experience. I ordered Sweet waffles, salad, molasses whoopee pie, iced gingerbread cookies, a vanilla cupcake, and red velvet cupcake, and a chi latte. So far everything has been phenomenal. Highly recommended.

Yelp
I get that it doesn't pay to be open all of the time, but when you are open, maybe try to be polite and respectful. Also, people who are not gluten-free are not monsters--they have questions when buying gluten-free items for their friends and family who have gluten allergies. Help educate them, rather than insult them. And, if someone wants to know what a bread taste like because it is very expensive compared to a regular French bread and they are going to be serving it at an important to them dinner party don't snipe at them that "there are no free samples," just tell them that it taste exactly like French bread or it's lighter or heavier or sweeter or whatever. And, it wouldn't hurt to say hello. Because of your hostile attitude, I will find gluten-free bakery items elsewhere.

Yelp
Two years later and Four Craft is still my jam! I don't eat gluten anymore so Flour Craft is my neighborhood go-to for my bread, granola, and sweet treats. Due to COVID and the actual store being closed I am still able to place my bread and granola order online and have it shipped right to my door. Easy peasy. Initially, I was a tad hesitant to pay for pretty expensive granola but once I start eating it I almost cannot stop. IT IS SO GOOD. I feel better since going gluten-free and Flour Craft allows me to still eat my favorite bread and granola without sacrificing taste and quality!

Yelp
Great soup and pastries. I suggest the quiche and soup combo for a gloomy day. Limited seating

Yelp
Blueberry earl grey scone! Came here for some pastries to take for a hike. Omg the earl grey scone is delicious! I returned the next day to buy 2 more haha. This might've been my 3rd time eating a scone so it's definitely set a high bar. The earl grey flavor really comes through. It wasn't too dry, and paired perfectly with some coffee the next morning. It is pretty dense though so I'd recommend sharing or just eating half.

Yelp
I was recently diagnosed with Celiac so it is nice to have options. I don't eat many sweets but the scones are nice for a treat and less sweet than many.

Yelp
Problem solved (see below) - the owner was very responsive and let me know the staff just hadn't been apprised of the situation. I am a long time customer and will continue to be because their baked goods are so delicious. Thank you Heather for taking care of your customers! We have been long time customers of Flour Craft Bakery in San Anselmo. We love their baked goods and have never had an issue, never made a complaint. Last Sunday my husband brought me a sourdough bowl to try something new ($11 for the bread, after spending $35 the day before for a dinner party). When I went to taste it, it was wet in the middle, heavily damp. It was not fully cooked. Usually I wouldn't say anything, but after my husband cut into it even he saw it wasn't worth saving. I called them up because we live a few miles away; I was ready to drive over if needed but thought I would call first. The woman I spoke with said I did not need to come back in, that she would credit me the $11. I said thank you. As I was doing my bookkeeping, I saw the credit didn't come through. I called the bakery - honestly, I thought it would be no big deal. The call was very uncomfortable, I was told no one there said that they would refund me, and that they would not honor the refund today. I should have come in with the bread at the time. Then they went on to try and shame me by saying no one else has ever complained about their bread. I knew I wasn't going to get anywhere so I said goodbye. Their baked goods are good, their customer service could use some work.

Yelp
Stopped in here for a hot beverage on a chilly Sunday. This entire area is adorable. Little shops and a couple places to eat center around a little square with seating. I had the matcha latte. They have all the special milk options but I stuck with regular milk. It was really tasty and hit the spot to warm me up. There were lots of sweet treats in the glass case. I was tempted to try one but I'd just had lunch so I wasn't hungry. They also have other food options to make a fuller meal but I didn't try those. Staff was friendly and made my drink quickly. They had all the safety precautions in place for Covid.
google avatar

AJ S.

Yelp
It was okay, the food came out quickly. I've been wanting to try this place for a long time. I really liked the soup, but if you're looking for a super smooth soup this isn't it. It was blended, but more thick and rustic. The salad was decent, wasn't a big fan of the dressing (cumin carrot I think). The savory waffle would have been better with a waffle that isn't sweet. Because the waffle it came with was sweet I think it would have been better with fruit, they do have a sweet waffle topping option. The baked items were a miss for us, the vegan donut was a bit odd and the whoopie pie didn't taste quite like one and the inside was overly sweet frosting without other flavor besides sugar and no strong flavor in the cookie itself. I would be interested to try other items here.

Yelp
Flour Craft bakery has the best vegan desserts if that's what you are looking for. But also has delicious desserts that are not vegan but wheat free ! Check out their chocolate Whoopi Pie and tahini chocolate brownie . You will not be disappointed !!!! Beyond delish !!!

Yelp
We usually just visit for the baked goods, but today we were able to try the prepared meals. I had the Bridgeway Tartine and my little one had the sweet waffles. We were equally pleased with our breakfasts. We ate them outside next to the creek. It made for a perfect morning.

Yelp
You'd think a gluten-free bakery would be supportive of people with disabilities and medical conditions. Ha! Not Flourcraft. Typically, I don't disclose my medical condition when I shop, but I did in this case because a migraine was starting and the server had the music on much louder than normal. Migraines can last for hours or days so this was a big deal to me. When I asked if she could please turn the music down, she glared at me before begrudgingly reaching down to her iphone on the counter. As I was the only customer in the shop, my request shouldn't have been a big deal. The server continued to give me surly looks while putting my order in a bag. After she handed me my order, she immediately turned the music up while I was still at the counter. I told her I would have appreciated her waiting until I had left the store, and she just stared at me as if I was a massive inconvenience. While I don't expect sunshine and rainbows, I do expect to be treated with respect when supporting a business. I certainly don't expect to have people deliberately try to make my migraine worse, especially in a shop that is supposed to cater to people with medical conditions. Before writing this review, I contacted the owner "Heather H" but received no response. It seems she could care less about creating a welcoming environment for her customers. Luckily, there are plenty of other places where I can get gluten-free baked goods with great customer service and without extra headache Update: Heather, It is unfortunate that you did not get my message. Thank you for the apology, however I would not consider this interaction as asking the server to "cater" to a request. This was a reasonable request to accommodate a customer's specific medical need/disability. If you would like for me to re-share my message with the specifics, I am happy to do so. Perhaps this would allow you to do some coaching on disability inclusion with this staff person--if this is a priority for your business. At this point, it doesn't seem to be.

Andrea G.

Yelp
Great sourdough bread that was crunchy and yummy! The best gluten-free bread around and wonderful customer service!

Yelp
The baked goods are fine. They're not great; they're not bad. I tried two different tartines and a citrus cake. Their sandwich bread is acceptable for a baguette style bread. They surpass Mariposa's baguettes which are quite small, but fall short of Pushkin's in Sacramento. The sandwich toppings, alas, were disappointing. The chicken added for $4 was quite dry and in chunks too large to be easily eaten. They were heaped on top an already quite thick open-faced sandwich half with unseasoned mozzarella domed on top. It was awkward. The sandwiches came with a small salad with a curry dressing on the side. It was totally fine and, alas, totally boring. To charge the prices they do for the goods... eh, you have to chalk it up to Marin. The baked goods are fine. They're not great; they're not bad. I tried two different tartines and a citrus cake. However, the attitude of the staff to my masked face was less than genial and the two sandwiches took twenty minutes to produce when I was the only customer in the store and there were no orders ahead of me. So, probably not coming back. The cake had a sandy texture.

Yelp
Dropped by here on our way to a hike and it was a disappointment. Service was incredibly slow. There was a large order before ours and for some reason they only had one person out of four or five prepping orders. That was pretty frustrating. We got an avocado toast and some pastries. The avocado toast was probably the biggest letdown. The slices of avocado were so thin and it was so sparse on the toast that I don't think you could call it an avocado toast. For $9, I expected a little more quality. They also used a dill spread under it that also overwhelmed the avocado. I've had many avocado toasts and I think this was the most disappointing. We also got an blueberry scone, pound cake, and sourdough chocolate chip cookie. The sourdough chocolate chip cookie was the only item me and my family enjoyed. The blueberry scone had a strange texture to it and there was something unusual about the flavor that threw me off. The texture wasn't crumbly like I'd expect in a scone but almost like fine sand. I had high hopes given the yelp reviews but this place doesn't live up to its hype.
google avatar

Teresa S.

Yelp
Love the baked goods but the service was soooo slow! There wasn't a rush or a huge line and I could see there were at least 3 people working but it still took over 25 minutes to get the Stinson Tartine. I have no idea why it took so long. Makes me think twice about ordering any of the menu item. If I were to visit again, I would just stick to the bakery items.

Yelp
Staff was friendly and kind - helped us first-timers decide when we were unimpressed with their donut selection of the day. Cookies were great and I really enjoyed their Lavender Lemon Scone. It's truly amazing GF baked goods. Will be going back soon to try their focaccia - looked good, but it was an early morning pit stop.
google avatar

Derek S.

Yelp
They have some seriously delicious treats here but my absolute favorite is their granola! It's a treat indeed. Highly recommend this location but they also have their granola available in local grocery stores specifically Whole Foods and Mollies I believe :)
google avatar

Yelp
Best chocolate chip cookie of my life. Levain bakery, move aside. Then the earl grey scone... phenomenal. Juxtapose this with my natural dislike of sweets- when I'm eating sweets, you know its GOOD.
google avatar

Matt P.

Yelp
Everything is GF and everything is delicious. My fav is the lemon blueberry scone. All the staff is very friendly

Bay A.

Yelp
Tasty baked goods but they don't seem to follow basic hygiene 101 (and I'm just going by what I've observed, not by what the owner thinks is happening). The person serving at the counter wears one glove (gives the illusion of hygiene?) that they ALSO use for transactions and doing other tasks in the store. Then they'll put their hand all over your goodie when they grab it. No thank you. It's just not great practice. Marin County safe food handling tip: * Change your gloves whenever you are changing tasks The pastries taste good but it's just some not optimally safe food handling going on there. I want to support local businesses but serving up baked goods with an icky glove puts me off.

Yelp
Flour Craft Bakery took care of our wonderful dessert table at my wedding. Everything we ordered was delicious!!! and not to mention ALL gluten free and some vegan options too. Our cake was a chocolate cake, raspberry filling, and vanilla buttercream. We ordered an assortment of desserts including cookies, brownies, pound cakes, and scones. They were all tasty and our guests couldn't even notice the difference. My particular favorite was the coconut pound cake!! Our photographer at (https://www.swedepeaphotography.com/) took a beautiful photo of our display!

Yelp
Absolutely the best Orange polenta chocolate cake. Bought one this week for my teammates... Lasted about one hour. Delicious!
google avatar

Theart P.

Yelp
We are very thankful for this little bakery. It's a wonderful place that's specifically trying to cater to those that have dietary concerns or restrictions. I wish there were more places like this that take a risk quite honestly to do what they do. They have great gluten-free and vegan bakery items, pair those with their excellent coffee and you're a happy camper. We love popping in here once a week to grab a goodie or two. It's a lovely place inside and out. Please give them a shot if you're in the area. It's worth the trip.
google avatar

Johanna L.

Yelp
Everything was delicious. I had a vegan donut and my guy had the tartine with smoked salmon. We sat outside in the nearby park. Sweet little Sunday morning find.

Sam W.

Yelp
Everything is gluten-free! Focaccia bread is to die for and is just as good as a high end glutenous version. I also recommend the Walnut Sourdough. Off the cafe menu Avocado Toast or Sweet Waffles are the go to!

Cody L.

Yelp
Sourdough Chocolate Chip Cookie was so good that we are going back ASAP. Also tried the Lemon Bar and Cupcake which were also very good. Would've stayed in there all day but it was starting to get hot inside
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
I was looking for a good donut, and ended up here. Good old Yelp had not steered me wrong yet.(foreshadowing...) Let me preface this by saying that is all I have tried. The donuts here taste like cardboard mixed with sawdust and baking soda. You could get much better vegan donuts at Whole Foods or Third Culture, for Half the Price! I might as well have taken my $10 and flushed it down the toilet... As far as donuts go, avoid this place like the Plague! I may update my review when I try something else, but honestly my donut experience makes me not want to go back...
google avatar

David V.

Yelp
The great thing is that they have gluten free cake, the bad thing... They look terrible, very small in size and are expensive! When I pay $30 for a cake I expect much more. Cake is for celebrations and these look anything but festive.
google avatar

Suzanne D.

Yelp
This place is awesome! I come here for lunch at least once a week. The taco salad is so good and the tartines. The service is excellent. I have never once experienced a rude employee. Nothing but friendliness, efficiency, helpfulness and smiling faces. The cooks in the kitchen make the most delicious goodies! The matcha tea is also delicious. The price is also reasonable.
google avatar

Laurel M.

Yelp
Poor service. Pastries/baked goods were great. Food was not. Not particularly creative, slapped together and everything came in to go bowls? Coffee was cold and we stood at the window forever to get more utensils and napkins. They gave us one fork for 7 items. Location gets them far I'm sure.
google avatar

Niav C.

Yelp
Sadly, I don't love this place. I'm not sure what all the hype is about. I've tried Flour Craft multiple times both in San Anselmo and Mill Valley, always hoping & wishing that somehow it will be better. I've tried many different sweet items - the cinnamon roll, the lemon pound cake, the cupcakes - and they are all either WAAAYY too sweet for my taste or dry or have an odd flavor. Why is that GF seems to equal doused in sugar? It's so sad because I love the idea of a totally GF bakery but I'm always disappointed. The one exception was their polenta cake. Not sure why that's different. One caveat - I bake GF as well as refined sugar free at home and I have it down, which is why I'm so picky. One of my biggest pet peeves about GF is all the other crap people/companies put in those treats that make them super unhealthy. I wish there were more GF treats without all the sugar. Guess I need to stick with baking at home for now.
google avatar

Heather H.

Yelp
Prior to Flour, I wasn't a fan of a lot of GF baked goods. Key word, PRIOR! I went in this morning and was greeted by a very sweet woman behind the counter, and I took her recommendation and ordered a GF cheddar scone for myself and a blueberry lemon one for a coworker. Not only my co-worker delighted with her breakfast treat, but I loved my scone. This is my new go to bakery. No wonder this place is so popular. Amazing flavor, selection and customer service.
google avatar

Belen S.

Yelp
Cute bakery! All gluten free! Would recommend matcha lattes and breakfast items. Friendly staff as well.
google avatar

Lorry G.

Yelp
I absolutely love all their treats! I rave about this GF option to people who are considering eating GF baked goods, I even prefer it to the Flour Chylde that is much closer to where I live. I can say I have tried the donuts, the olive oil/choc cake, majority of all the cupcakes (even the lemon ones that I don't really care for but love here), the quiches, the galettes... I have ordered birthday cakes here and even purchased a very expensive, decadent chocolate halloween cake here that was well worth the experience and the black stained teeth I had for a week! lol Almost every dessert has been moist and high quality except for some of the bread that just tastes like cake and turns hard basically the next day. I have eaten in (despite this place not feeling very cozy enough to hang out and read a book at) and taken to go but I have to say... I have frequented this place for several years now, but the service is really up and down. There are a couple of younger women who are really nice and who provide such warmth to the experience but there are times when I have encountered some coldness and lack of cheerfulness when putting in an order... sigh... Aside from the up and down service, the pastries are worth the drive when I just don't have the time or energy to bake GF myself. Still my fave GF in Marin!
google avatar

Tammy W.

Yelp
I am so glad I found this bakery. To go to a bakery and have many choices of great GF baked goods is very exciting. I wish I lived closer but they do ship and I already placed a order. I had the raspberry almond scone and it is light and great tasting. The texture is just like a scone. I also loved the cinnamon rolls. Very tasty and perfect once warmed a little bit.

Yelp
I'm a fan of this all gluten bakery. Flour Craft has been around a few years and feels substantial and well grounded in the community. The variety of foods always start out slowly, now this location is at least 5-years old. and offers many wonderful baked goods, t-shirts, and other items. Baked goods such as scones, cookies, breads, and muffins fill the case. Lunch is also served - salads, and sandwiches are at a plenty. It's comfortable to sit in the bakery and visit with people at the next tables. I always see Moms with kids and single women. I hope the community can continue to support this well-needed bakery. The food is so good you wouldn't even know that it's gluten-free.
