Best Restaurants, Bars, and Cafes on South Whidbey Island | Eater Seattle

"The Flower House is yet another obscure Whidbey gem, tucked in the community gardens surrounding the historic Bayview Cash Store, noticeable by the color-pops of flowers in all directions. The espresso here is on par with Vita or Victrola, and everything on the menu’s thoughtfully crafted and aesthetically pleasing. Cilantro-pesto avocado toast and the Ruby sandwich (pastrami, red sauerkraut, pickles, and provolone on multigrain, served hot) are standouts, as are the rotating salads." - Meg van Huygen

Food is pricy but delicious! Drinks were okay…matcha was just sweetened warm milk without any real matcha. Service is good but expect to wait. Love the atmosphere which is why I continue to go back!

This is a great little cafe and coffee/pastry place. I've been here for lunch before and this time just wanted a mocha while my wife shopped at Bayview Gardens. I had already eaten breakfast and had NO need for a pastry. That's my mocha next to the maple, bacon biscuit they were selling that day. OMG! I was going to eat it there so they warmed it up for me first. That was one of the most delicious breakfast pastries I have ever eaten! They also have a large and eclectic selection of outdoor seating options. Different table and chair styles and shapes made with multiple products. Just a fun place to eat outside on a sunny day.

Google
• Avocado toast - with a hint of lemon sauce that brightens up the flavor • Vanilla coconut latte (Seasonal Drink) The ambience is warm and relaxing, like dining in a garden at grandma’s house.

The Vegan Hiker

Google
I love this place because the food is amazing and the outdoor seating is incredible. Some solid vegan options. This was my third time here. I’m writing this review because even though I will keep coming back, people need to know that the service is not great. The staff come across as “snoody”/“uppity” and are never friendly; there are never enough workers either. Expect to wait in line for at least 30 minutes regardless what time or day. They are also extremely expensive, and the portion sizes are small.

Google
Atmosphere is great, nice decor. The almost pastry was good, as well as the London fog coffee. Cappuccino was good, but it was a 75% foam in a 12oz mug, not even exaggerating. Never seen so much foam in a cappuccino before, barely any coffee in there. Taking off a star for that, but otherwise the place great

Google
This is a cute cafe with beautiful flowers and open air seating. Very beautiful to get there on a sunny day. The flourless cookie and butter coconut cookie were delicious. The breakfast was good. The veggie sandwich and avocado toast are delicious. The coffee wasn't as good though. Must try when on the island.

Google
Yummy breakfast, in a relaxing environment full of flowers and plants. Service was ok - I ordered a scramble with bread and added avocado, and for some reason they thought I did not want the bread. It took a lot of explaining and re-explaining before the bread appeared, and by that point the meal was more than half way over.

Google
Incredible. I had the breakfast plate- they give you plenty of bacon, the eggs were delicious and the potatoes were well seasoned. The sweets are also just fantastic. You can have your dog outside on the patio and the environment is so relaxing.

Yelp
I visited around 2PM for lunch on a lovely sunny day! I brought my dog along, and I was happy to see that they're dog-friendly with outdoor seating. The whole place was adorable, with lots of flowers and greenery. The staff were also pleasant. For lunch, I ordered the Grilled Cheese Sandwich with bacon and avocado, which came with a side salad. I also had a vanilla latte, and the food and drink were amazing! The grilled cheese was perfectly done, and the latte was super rich and flavorful. Everything came out pretty fast too. The café is located next to a garden walking area, which was wonderful for a stroll with my dog afterward. If I'm back on Whidbey Island, I'll definitely return. I'd love to try their pastries next time!

Yelp
I got a pumpkin spice latte and split the breakfast burrito and an egg scramble plate. The latte was too sweet and kind of small. The burrito was delicious. The egg scramble was all right. The seating area outside is really nice, and afterwards there's a nursery and a souvenir shop right next to the cafe that you can check out. I really enjoyed this place!

Yelp
Flower House was recommended to me so while on Whidbey Island, I decided to stop by. The cafe is pretty good in size. Order at the counter then have a seat. I ordered a side of scrambled eggs, bacon and a glass of prosecco. I loved the ambiance and it felt very homey.

Yelp
We stopped here for recharging. The ambiance was elegant and upscale. The service was friendly and courteous. It was a beautiful coffee shop next to the Bayview Garden. We ordered London Fog, Chai Tea, brown coconut butter cookie and gluten free chocolate cookie. Wow, drinks were phenomenal and pastries were good. A great place to grab a cup of coffee in town.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a beautiful property! I only had a sandwich. It was very good. I definitely want to go back.

Yelp
We stopped in for coffee/tea and snacks in July (2024). Wonderful, as always. They weren't crowded in the afternoon, but service was good. The ambiance is amazing. The work they must put into keeping all the flowers looking their best is amazing!! We'll be back!!

Yelp
I wish every state, city, or town had this cute Flower House Cafe to appreciate and enjoy! What could be better than enjoying the beautiful greenery and delicious food? The atmosphere, the baked goods waiting for you at the front entrance, and the friendly service just adds to a great experience! I went for chai tea and morning pastries, and came back for lunch and took 6 cookies to go! YES! it's all good and Langley WA is so darn fortunate to have this in their community.

Yelp
Are you looking for the coziest, most charming, delightful little breakfast spot ever? Then look no further than the Flower House Cafe. It's phenomenal. As you walk in, a fantastic aroma of coffee and pastries will fill your nostrils. The service was fantastic. Everyone was super cheerful and friendly. The food was probably a 4/5 star. But combined with the ambiance and service it's a 5. I got the breakfast burrito bowl. It was very good, but definitely needed a little salt and hot sauce. My wife got the chia pudding. It was quite good, but didn't have much chia pudding. Ha. So the toppings were good. The fresh squeezed OJ was . But overall I loved this place and would go out of my way to come back here. Might try something new. Tip: gluten free? Get the chocolate walnut cookie. It was AMAZING.

Yelp
Great place to stop for coffee and a snack. The peanut butter chocolate cookie is one of my all time favorite cookies, so good. They have full on meals too (think $avocado toast and such). Nice spots to sit both inside and out. Everyone here is always super nice. It's busy on weekends in the summer, but weekdays it's easy to walk right in. I love to grab a coffee and cookie here before going next door to the nursery to browse plants. Must stop if you're on the island!

Yelp
I love Flower House Cafe! I came here a few years ago, and my friends and I liked it so much we came here twice during our weekend on Whidbey Island. I came again recently and still loved it. I love how the cafe is a part of a nursery/garden so you can walk around afterwards and check out all their plants, home decor, gift/souvenir items, etc. The cafe itself is super cute too. I wish there was a place like this in Seattle/ Bellevue! Anyway, Flower House Cafe serves both breakfast and lunch, pastries and drinks. You line up to order at the counter, then find a seat and your food gets brought out to you. There's indoor and outdoor seating. This most recent time I got the pumpkin pie chai (though I wanted to try all their seasonal drinks), and I think it was the best I've ever had. I thought about ordering another one to go because it was sooo good! haha and now I kinda regret not doing that! Food wise, portion size is decent and ingredients always seem really fresh. Add Flower House Cafe to your places to check out when visiting Whidbey Island!

Yelp
Cute cafe next to the Bayview Garden. It has both a beautiful indoor and outdoor area with all the plants. We bought a dog, so we sat outside. It was pretty rainy and windy when we went. The person behind the counter said she would turn on the heater outside for us, which she did and there was an enclosed outdoor seating area, so it blocked the windy nicely. The food was a bit pricey. The have standard coffee drinks with milk alternatives and flavors so you can tailor it to how you life. They had seasonal drinks, and I got a Cardamom and Rose latte, and the flavors came through with the spice and floral notes.

Yelp
Great place for breakfast and lunch, beautiful atmosphere. Friendly service and great cookies. The only complaint is the water, you can smell the chlorine. Would not suggest the water.

War V.

Yelp
My family ordered 2 egg sandwitch they excellent one break plate was excellent . Also order one ham and cheese crescent . And two choclate chip cookies. All where excellent.. The waitress was outstanding. No complaints. Five stars all the way around.
google avatar

Yelp
Pulled over for a quick bite on a little road trip to the ferry. The ambiance of this place is my favorite part, there is a nursery next door which I love. The tuna sandwich was good, and I would get it again. I'm leaving it four stars because of the service. My friends ordered drinks and they never came and it was a whole thing to get a refund as we were leaving.

Yelp
Flower House is such an adorable location on the south end of Whidbey Island. There is indoor and outdoor seating. Sometimes the line can be long on weekends so be prepared for that. As far as the food goes, I always order the avocado toast because it's that good. The pesto added on top adds such a fresh and light flavor. This time I tried adding an egg and I'm glad I did. It elevated this to the next level.
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
I love the ambiance of this place. It's worth it to come on a nice day and sit outside with all the flower baskets. Plenty of shaded areas. The food and drink could use some improvement. I ordered a lavender lemon Italian soda. It lacked flavor and carbonation. I also ordered the seasonal salad which is vegan and gluten free. The ingredients weren't very fresh and it lacked flavor. I wish they had more vegan and gluten free options. Most items are one or the other.
google avatar

Erin M.

Yelp
Such a sweet cafe located in a garden nursery! The menu was on the smaller side, but everything we got was amazing! I had the seasonal scramble with corn and poblano chilies and my husband had the burrito with pulled pork. He got his first breakfast to-go box because it was so loaded with amazing meat and potatoes! The house made chai latte was flavorful and delicious as well as the peach scone we snagged for later. Also make sure to check out the nursery and their little shop after, so much good stuff!
google avatar

Preston M.

Yelp
Tl;Dr great cafe in a plant nursery. Beautiful vibes and delicious food and coffee. This place has an amazing ambiance. Right next to a nursery, there are beautiful plants everywhere. Absolutely beautiful especially in the morning. The coffee is typical cafe fare, but the food is pretty good! They have some nice seasonal items and pastries as well.
google avatar

Khrystyn B.

Yelp
My family and I love it here! Great food, staff are pleasant and it's such a beautiful environment full or flowers and greenery since it's next to a garden house. A must go to in Whidbey!

Yelp
We were on the way to Langley. The place looks very cute. We ordered avocado toast and chicken salad sandwich. The food was good. Fresh avocado, the toast was good, added eggs and bacon. Chicken salad sandwich has walnut and apple slices. Side salad was good. It has indoor and outdoor seatings. It has good coffee. Self serve water.
google avatar

Yelp
Good coffee, and we shared a very good breakfast burrito. Great tortilla, great potatoes (but not too many, fortunately), pulled pork, eggs, and a nice if mild salsa. Also the outdoor seating area is gorgeous. Recommend showing up as soon as they open if you don't want to wait a long time.

Yelp
Always a delight to stop in the Flower House. I really love their baked goods, and their sandwiches. The atmosphere is a very charming in a lush garden setting.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food, cute area and delicious coffee. Service was really great and everyone was so nice.

Yelp
I have been here for brunch twice. Flower House Cafe is connected to Bayview Farm & Garden. You get in line, order at the counter, and they give you a # and they bring you your food and drink. Not the biggest selection of foods, but good for a cafe. We ordered: - breakfast sandwich - latte - breakfast burrito - salted PB cookie Food is always pretty good here. Cody's not a fan, he'd rather have a greasy spoon diner place. They have indoor and outdoor seating. I think it's a cute spot!
google avatar

Savannah E.

Yelp
The menu here always has something scrumptious on offer, but my go-to and the thing I really get excited for here is the grilled cheese. I am not sure how many times I've been, but I have never been disappointed by their menu, nor has anyone I've been there with. The setting is lovely. Depending on when you go, there's often a line at peak times - a testament to how good they are. The new outdoor seating area is so pleasant on warmer days, and flows so smoothly into the garden store next door. Going here is a treat.
google avatar

Tanner L.

Yelp
The outdoor area is a well put together, there are several other shops all tucked and around the area, it's right next to a garden center so there's beautiful plants and pottery all around. The service is is friendly and the food is good. A nice place to spend an afternoon.

M C.

Yelp
Beautiful spots to enjoy coffee and lunch. They have inside and outside seating outside is full of plants and little birds.

Emily D.

Yelp
It's such a good atmosphere inside. The food was good, but what really makes it enjoyable is the attached greenery. Such a fun experience!
google avatar

Carolyn F.

Yelp
Small menu (6 items plus pastries) but everything we ordered was delicious. Generous portions. Coffee was great. The nice thing about being connected to the flower store is that the patio is beautiful!
google avatar

Diana C.

Yelp
Favorite place for breakfast, lunch or coffee and a treat! Love relaxing among the Bayview Garden blooms and garden inspiration.
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
Dropped by for coffee and breakfast to go and it was perfect with good coffee and delicious pastries. I got the maple bacon biscuit that was savory. The service was friendly. The venue was cute. It was filled with flowers with indoor and outdoor seating. We ended up staying longer than we planned because it was so nice and relaxing there definitely will return again.

Mette L.

Yelp
Had the gluten free chocolate cookies and delicious breakfast. The cafe is a pleasure to be at - from the food to the flower house to the great gift shop. Lovely establishment.
google avatar

Georgia H.

Yelp
We just spent $75 on takeout food we literally can't eat because they didn't do the order right (sorry, we can eat the cookie). We ordered two veggie sammies no cheese. Got two Sammies with cheese (it's melted on and we're allergic so went in the trash). Ordered the seasonal salad with no cheese (got a salad covered in cheese and tossed already so couldn't pick it off). Ordered the vegan carrot ginger soup (was given chicken meatball soup - again, has to throw away). So we spent $75 and are now back at our hotel eating the side of chips and cookie. They closed early today so couldn't go back. Pretty bogus and disappointing.
google avatar

Nate S.

Yelp
Solid lunch spot with excellent sandwiches. The chicken salad was awesome and the avocado toast was on point with a half avo per slice of toast. If you want fresh, lighter sandwiches come here, if you want heartier sandwiches go to Whidbey Doughtnuts nextdoor. The ambiance here at FH wins. Can't go wrong with either!
google avatar

Mackenzie C.

Yelp
Flower House Cafe has delicious food and coffee. This was my first time trying their soup and treats and was so happy with my choices. I got the cannellini bean and squash soup with parmesan and bread on the side, a brown butter coconut cookie, and a hazlenut latte with coconut milk. Everything was so good and came out quickly and hot, and the employees were friendly! They have lots of indoor seating, and outdoor seating with heaters. It's part of Bayview Farms, which has the best shop and a Christmas market that is too cute.

Sam K.

Yelp
I would give this a 3.7*. The avacado toast is unique, tasty. But the size is small. The side of the salad tastes as if made from fresh leaves. Really tasty food. The house tea was also good. The interior is bit crowded ; but the exterior is good. They have heaters too (one does not work). The service was fast in serving the tea. We waited for 30 min for the food and then reminded them. I would count as exception.
google avatar

Mark H.

Yelp
This is tourist country, and this is tourist food. We both had a sandwich with a side salad. The sandwich was OK, the bread was very good quality and quite fresh. The spread was a chicken salad with cranberries and apples and that sort of thing, not at all bad but a bit overwhelmed by some sort of dressing. The salad was just a few leaves of lettuce with a lot of dressing on them. The coffee drink was watery; she likes strong coffee, and watery coffee just doesn't cut it. The staff were very pleasant and cheerful. While it's not mandatory, you may well find yourself wandering through the adjacent nursery, and from there to the gift shop, which sells scented candles. As I said: touristy.

Maia M.

Yelp
The setting is beautiful. But that's the only good thing I can say about this place. The employees are rude and unhelpful and will not accommodate even the most basic dietary requests. I asked that they fry my egg scramble in butter as my autoimmune condition flares up from seed oils. They acted annoyed and put out and then said no, they couldn't do that. Well they have butter in the kitchen so not sure of the reasoning but whatever. I did not order an entree because there was nothing I could eat (everything on the menu is cooked in cheap toxic seed oils). My friend's food was cold, flavorless, expensive, and served with a grimace. I'm local and this is the last time I'll eat there no matter how pretty it is.

Susan M.

Yelp
Lovely place,‍‍ The breakfast burrito is delicious. I liked the avocado toast, too. We marked it average because the servings are small for what you pay, especially since you have to stand in line to order and we all felt rushed to make a decision because you can't see the menu until you're right up to the order spot. There are several lovely pastries in the case right there but we couldn't see them because people from the line were in the way waiting for coffee. I've recently paid much less for equally good food with full table service. But we all liked our food and the nursery next door is a very nice place to stroll off the meal.

Yelp
My husband and I went on a mini trip to Whidbey Island today and this was the first place we stopped at. It's quite close coming off from the ferry terminal. First impression: warm, relaxing vibes and nice decor with hanging lights and holiday decor. It was neither overly loud inside nor outside. -There was plenty of outdoor seating. The outdoor area my husband and I sat in had a heated outdoor lamp, which was nice since it was 38 degrees today. -You get a table number and your food gets brought to you. The waitress came out with our food within 10 minutes. I got the avocado toast, salad (which came as a side to avocado toast), and matcha latte-- I only noticed at the end how much "green" my food was... :) Hubby got the cafe cheeseburger (+side of chips) and a drip coffee. -Overall, the food and drinks were delicious and hit the spot for us- not too heavy and enough to be satisfied. Great way to start off our mini trip! -Don't forget to visit the gift shop & plant nursery next door!

Yelp
My family LOVES this place! The food and coffee are a 10/10 & there is such a warm vibe when you walk in. A big shoutout to the staff because they are always friendly and super welcoming. :)

Yelp
Want to romanticize your life? Catch a ferry and head straight to Flower House Cafe! It's the cutest spot with tons of outdoor seating and really cute decor. I ordered the tuna sandwich with a side salad and my bestie ordered the chicken salad over salad (so she didn't get it as a sandwich). Her salad came with a few extras such as cucumber, apples, and walnuts! Very delicious :) My tuna sandwich was perfect - simple yet elevated. I'm a sucker for a lavender oat milk latte - iced of course :) Baked treats are also one of my weaknesses, and they all looked so good here! We got a chocolate chip peanut butter cookie that was everything you want and need in a cookie- including a nice pinch of salt on top :) We also picked up an almond croissant that we saved for a later sunset picnic on the beach! There was layers of beautiful croissant, with a cake like filling as well! Probably one of the best almond croissants I've had in a long time! The staff here are so friendly. The gals who were working the day we came in were actually sisters! They said we were dressed cute, but I swear they were the cutest gals ever!

Brian B.

Yelp
In our humble opinion, this is without a doubt the best breakfast place on Whidbey Island. The food is prepared fresh, the service is very quick, even when they are packed to the gills. We have only come for breakfast, but I can only imagine their lunch dishes are fantastic.
google avatar

Sabrina C.

Yelp
Maybe more of a 3.5 I ordered the shrimp tacos ($12) which were a seasonal item in Nov 2022. I thought they were fairly tasty and the salsa had a good kick but they were very very small and only came with 3 tacos. The presentation was also really sad to be honest but the flavor was good. You order at the counter and they give you a number to place on your table. They do have seating but it was pretty busy around noon so it was difficult to find a spot so my group ended up splitting to two separate tables. Overall the food was fine but definitely overpriced. $4 each for tiny, sad looking tacos is not really worth it, especially since it's not a full service restaurant.

Angela F.

Yelp
My favorite cafe and coffee shop on Whidbey Island. Amazing food, great coffee and friendly staff.

Bruce C.

Yelp
Great pastry and really good coffee. Service and location is great too with ample seating inside and outside
google avatar

Jacqueline H.

Yelp
My friends and I came during a trip to Whidbey Island because we heard great things and it did not disappoint! First off, they have a huge parking lot, which is a big plus. They had a good brunch and cafe menu, as well as pastry options. I just got a london fog, which is delicious - actually one of the best I've had in awhile. They have a great covered outdoor space that is perfect for groups. They also have an adorable garden shop with a ton of different plants, plant pots, and gift shop type products. Everything was fairly priced and they were so dog friendly too, which made me and my pup happy. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We stopped in for a late breakfast and had a nice meal on the patio. Food is well prepared and tastes good. Service is friendly. Prices are a tad on the high side. Menu is limited, but has some nice options. They are doing a nice job of adhering to social distance requirements.

Mark A.

Yelp
One of my current favorite places on the island. Food is always fresh. They do sell out of things and is common. An extra refill with your drip coffee. While here today I noticed staff wiping down not just tables, but hard to reach areas and things that were not just table tops. It's nice to see that cleanliness matter as much as quality food and coffee!
