12 Stellar Places to Enjoy Fish and Seafood in Houston

"Modeled after East Texas fish shacks, walking into the Flying Fish can be an undoubtedly fun sensory experience. The restaurant’s multicolored checkered floors, crocodile green and white-striped booths, chestnut-colored chairs, and wall decor spanning from framed bill bass to illuminated Shiner Beer signs illustrate its playful, relaxed environment. After taking in an oft-bustling atmosphere, a range of fried fish and seafood plates await. Their classic fried catfish and shrimp basket with fries are comprehensive and satisfying. Fish tacos, grilled rainbow trout, and a peppery red snapper Veracruz, known in-house as “El Tiburón,” (the shark) are favorites among regulars and visitors alike." - Kayla Stewart

Everything was delicious. Made me want to bring one of those singing mounted fish from back in the day...free appetizer if you let them adopt it. Huge portions as well. Great music. Homemade tarter sauce!!!

Google
Flying Fish was 5 star all the way. It's a repurposed gas station with a bait shop ambience. They even have a Billy Bass Adoption program. Its hilarious 😂. I ordered the fried fish and shrimp, of course. The shrimp were large and almost buttery. The fish filets were tender and crispy. If you sign up online for their "club" you can get email discounts and they have a loyalty card. Personally, they do not need the discounts. The food was very reasonably priced for the portions and taste. I highly recommend the Flying Fish 🐟🐠. Update: 9/6/24 Just as good as before. Two whole fried catfish platters. Delicious.

Definitely a place anybody should visit at least once, and then maybe more if you love it. We were so confused when the GPS brought us to some place that looks like a hole in the wall built from an old gas station. My daughter did not want to go in, but we're glad we did. Absolutely unique and adorable decor, lots of ambiance, lots of things to look at. They have a great menu and if we come back, would love to try some different things. We ordered the catfish and shrimp platter with a side of calamari. The shrimp were great, the catfish was pretty good but definitely needs more spices in the batter. Batter. The calamari was a little disappointing. Disappointing. Extremely overcooked and hard and dry, but I feel like that's pretty common in Houston so you might be okay with it if that's what you're used to. Next time, I definitely want to try the chowders or gumbo and some other dishes. Kids will love it and adults will too.

Stopped for a quick quick bite and really enjoyed the vibe of this place. Kinda reminded me of a Bass Pro Shop with all the decor. The service is counter still order your food then find a spot to sit until your buzzer goes off. We had the lobster soup and the fried catfish and shrimp basket. Food was good and overall it was a good dinner experience. If you have a billy bass fish just laying around you can bring it in for some free food.

Google
LOVE THIS SPOT! I am a huge seafood lover and since discovering this place, we try to eat there at least once a month. Easy Parking - Outdoor Dog Friendly Patio - Clean Bathrooms - Lots of Dining Spaces - Fast Casual Concept!!! Small Selection of Beer on Draft - HUGE menu including niche products (Alligator, Mahi, Grouper, and more). Super reasonable prices. Good portions. And the food is great! I love the slaw, the interesting sauces, as well as the preference of Cajian rice and beans over items like fries. Did I mention it was fast casual? Ha! Really love that feature over a wait staff. Reallly friendly service and all in all a gem!

Google
We ordered the fried red snapper and lobster stew and calamari bites. The atmosphere was great and the restaurant was clean. The food was exceptional. I would love to come here again!

Google
Tried this place for the first time of I’m sure will be many last night. Service was friendly and food came out quick and hot. Both of my friends enjoyed their dishes as well. Very broad menu with plenty options. Gotta go back to get the hula poppers. The fried Jalapeño chips were phenomenal and came with two dipping sauces. Dining room was spacious and very cool. Would highly recommend.

Google
Great Food and Great Service!! First time at The Flying Fish. I had the Chimichurri Rainbow Trout with Grilled Veggies, Fried Okra and a cup of Gumbo. The trout was nice and tender pairing nicely with the herbal and tangy notes of the chimichurri sauce which really enhanced the flavor of the fish. As far as the sides go, the fried okra was crispy and had a great texture and the grilled veggies were cooked to perfection. I really enjoyed this meal and I am definitely going back to explore their different menu offerings.

Yelp
Flying Fish in the Heights offers a delightful seafood dining experience with a cozy ambiance and a menu that boasts a variety of fresh catches. The restaurant's commitment to sustainability is evident in their selection of seafood, which includes options like Gulf Coast oysters and wild-caught fish. I highly recommend starting with the fried calamari, which is perfectly crispy and served with a tangy remoulade sauce. For the main course, the blackened redfish is a standout dish, cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. The shrimp and grits are also a must-try, with creamy grits and plump, juicy shrimp. The service at Flying Fish is attentive and friendly, adding to the overall enjoyable dining experience. Whether you're a seafood enthusiast or just looking for a great meal, Flying Fish in the Heights is definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
First off, we've lived in Garden Oaks for the past 4 years and have been curious to try out Flying Fish. As a man who is married to a seafood enthusiast I was happy to take my wife here one day. Well the day came, and I must say, it was definitely a disappointment. We ordered the whole fried tilapia, it had absolutely zero seasoning and was bland. The borracho beans and rice also had no flavor. If you desire simply fried fish and shrimp, stick to that. Seems like the cooks have no seasonings in the kitchen. The fries and okra were good.

Yelp
The Houston location of Flying Fish is part of a multi-state chain with outposts in Tennessee, Arkansas and Texas. I have been curious about the restaurant for quite some time, but only recently visited the establishment. For me, the gold standard when it comes to seafood is the long gone Jaeger's, a New Orleans institution I frequented with family while visiting the city as a child. I originally thought Flying Fish is a local business, unaware of the chain status. That said, I think there are some positives and also areas with room for improvement. Positives: - The items included in the 2-piece catfish platter with fries were fried correctly. The fish and fries had the right texture. - The lemonade was top tier and you can get free refills. - The decor is charming and better than what's presented at most local seafood restaurants. - Staff are helpful when you have questions. Areas for Improvement: - Front of House is subpar. When you walk in, there's no greeter and the counter area was unoccupied. - Several tables appeared to be un-bussed. No serious establishment should allow this. This is peak dinnertime. All of the unoccupied tables should be clean and ready for new guests. - The catfish and fries were bland with no discernible flavor or seasoning. The catfish fillets also appeared to be rather small. Overall, I would give flying fish a rating of good but not great. I would like to return someday and try other items on the menu.

Yelp
I wanted to update my review of 4 years ago and it's still very positive. On my last visit I tried the Cajun Platter for $24 which is one of the most expensive meals on the menu. Most entrees here are in the teens $. This meal consisted of fried alligator chunks, crawfish jambalaya and 2 pairs of fried frog legs on a bed of rice. From my previous experiences here, I had them make it "snappy" which adds their Cajun seasoning to the fried pieces for added flavor. The food arrived about 10 minutes later. During that time, I enjoyed the Cajun music playing in the background along with looking at the interesting, humorous and folksy interior. The jambalaya had crawfish tails, okra, sausage, tomato, etc. in a tasty roux over rice all mixed in a bowl. It was very good tasting. The gator bites were also very good with a texture slightly more firm than chicken. Finally the fried frog legs were enjoyable too. This was a filling meal that I would order again despite its price. Flying Fish has a frequent diner card that after 9 visits gives you $10 off of the 10 visit. This is still one of my favorite casual seafood restaurants in Houston.

Yelp
Good little place with a big menu to choose from. We were in the mood for grilled fish and they had 5 or 6 fish to choose from. On top of that, they also had 4 different sauces/spices to choose from. I had grilled catfish "snappy" style which was a cajon seasoning. The other fish we ordered was red snapper with a chimichurri-ish sauce. Both came with red beans and rice, and grilled zucchini and squash. Each were 1 filet. Both were good, but I really liked the red snapper over the catfish. It had a meatier taste. Both had a nice golden cook to them. We also ordered Hula Poppers, which are jalapeños stuffed with cheese and shrimp, wrapped in bacon. The restaurant is quite large in a building that looks like an old gas station. Definitely has some charge for! There is a large outdoor seating area with picnic benches as well. Order at the counter and they give you a buzzer for when your food is ready. Friendly staff and a great place to bring family.

Yelp
Love the grilled tilapia and fried fish. Grandkids live the kids meal in a boat. Fast service too

Yelp
The next time you have a hankering for a shrimp basket, head over to Flying Fish. Reasonably priced in a comfortably decorated converted gas station, the food is well prepared and tasty. The shrimp are large, butterflied and fried in a cornmeal dredge, but not greasy at all. The cocktail sauce has the tanginess of horseradish which will tickle your sinuses. The hushpuppies were excellent also.
google avatar

Donald P.

Yelp
This place has definitely improved over the last year. Fried Catfish and shrimp were hot and crispy. Fries weren't great, little soggy and no season. Cocktail sauce was weak. The guy at the counter was very pleasant and the Iced Tea was good. Place is clean and pleasantly overall.
google avatar

Jenny T.

Yelp
Although the food came out quickly and hot! The flavor just wasn't there. I got the shrimp basket with fries and it was very bland. The sweet tea was watered down and not sweet at all. Tasted like the bottom of the barrel. The place was practically empty, that should have been my first sign it wasn't so great.

Maia V.

Yelp
There has NEVER been a time I've come here and the food was bad. Fried fish is always fried to perfection. Staff super friendly . Hidden gem !!
google avatar

Demi T.

Yelp
Casual restaurant for some decent seafood dishes! There menu offers a variety of ways to serve up your seafood: fried, grilled, salads, po-boys, tacos. Theres something for everyone! I opted for a fried combo basket, while my boyfriend had a grilled plate. Our entrees were good and fresh, but the taste was not too remarkable compared to other places I've tried. Over all, I can see myself returning if I'm having a major craving for some fried seafood. Also in the restaurant, there is a wall fully covered with donated Billy Bass fish. According to their website, if you donate a Billy Bass to their wall, you will receive a free basket of catfish! You can also submit your fishing photos to display in their restaurant. I thought this was neat and added a homey touch to the restaurant.

Latisha M.

Yelp
Came here to try with a friend it was our first time , We got the 4 shrimp and 2 catfish combo. It was really good came out very quickly and steaming hot. The fish was very tasty not overly salty and the shrimp tasted very fresh also, the fries are really good and not over cooked . The only reason why I gave 4 and not five is the crawfish The crawfish was disgusting over cooked and not clean at all Good at , it had a smooth refrigerator taste with no seasoning definitely be coming back for the fish and shrimp, but never for crawfish.
google avatar

Bfoxy4life ..

Yelp
They have a nice space but the dood taste freezer burned. A fiend and I went there one night just to try it. Just not good there are better places out there
google avatar

Akilah H.

Yelp
Love this gem. The manager Roy was very accommodating to celebrate a birthday here. We pretty much had to entire back room area which is private. Everyone enjoyed their meals and I did as well. I will definitely return. Fish and shrimp and hush puppies were delicious.
google avatar

Tim J.

Yelp
Wasnt expecting much, and they failed to meet that. Came here for lunch, the first time the order was halfway frozen. aka microwaved or re heat from the fridge. Second time the cat fish was just bad. Maybe low quality oil, not even sure how it could be this bland and bad. No expectations, still left disappointed after trying it twice.
google avatar

Payal P.

Yelp
Their hush puppies are the best hush puppies I've ever had! I'm drooling just thinking about them! They are crispy on the outside but soft and fluffy on the inside. They are not dense like most hush puppies are, which is great!
google avatar

Malek B.

Yelp
Decent fried catfish, ordered the basket with hush puppies & fries. Fries were ok, not all that crispy. Lots of tartar sauce, lemon wedges, ketchup and saltines available. Wednesday they have all you can eat catfish for $18, I plan to return! Counter service, inside & outside seating. You can tell there's a bunch of regulars, place is 1/2 empty at lunch midweek.
google avatar

Bran W.

Yelp
I don't know who is cooking tonight, but my food was absolutely horrible. The frog legs were OK although they incorrectly put Cajun seasoning on them. The $10 a bowl seafood gumbo was a corn starch mess of horrid tasting slop. The beans and rice were likewise. The other sides I had, the spinach, the zucchini, and the dirty rice. All tasted like they've been sitting around for hours. my delivery was almost $70 and I have not very often been this disappointed in the quality of food I have received from someplace. I cannot in good conscious recommend this to anyone.
google avatar

Brenda M.

Yelp
Went for a birthday celebration around lunch time. The place is very spacious. Started with a margarita and fried okra and both were good. Also tried the seafood gumbo but will say it was very salty kept drinking water the rest of the day because of that. I bought catfish fillet to go work red beans and rice and will say that was delicious. Will be going again will like to try other things on the menu.

Tia C.

Yelp
This quality of the food has gone downhill. We used to frequent this restaurant often and I won't be going back. The seafood quality is terrible and this is after multiple visits giving it multiple chances. Gumbo is filled with okra and the 2 shrimp in it were mushy and off tasting. The grilled tilapia was burnt on one side and mush on the other. I had to send this back it was so bad. We won't be returning.

Blyss B.

Yelp
Got the boiled crawfish and ordered the shrimp and a sausage. This was some of the worst boiled crawfish I've ever eaten, the shrimp were just okay and were 19.99 for a lb and I ordered a sausage as a side. I called them and told them it was missing and they said that the next time I came in they would give me a side for free. I told them that I'd prefer a refund since it was 3.50 and I do not plan on eating there again. This was a couple of months ago and I never got a refund. Overall not good
google avatar

Julie E.

Yelp
Ok. Place seems ok but I wish u had asked about what is on their poor boy. It is covered in marinara sauce with sliced tomatoes and onions. I am not a fan of any of that. I ate the oysters off the bread and that's it. Fries were plain. Hush puppies were full of onion flavor. Oh well. Won't be back but if you like any of what I don't like then go by and enjoy.
google avatar

Teddy S.

Yelp
I drive by this establishment every single day, but I decided to I dine in yesterday for the first time. I was VERY impressed with the food!! I had shrimp porboy , oysters and hush puppies. I know the construction near by can be a challenge, but it's totally worth the trip!! This place should be busier and I will definitely tell everyone about it

LaCour D.

Yelp
The food had no flavor whatsoever, I would not suggest anything boiled from this establishment. This was the worst boiled seafood i had. I don't think they season the water at all but sprinkle the whatever spice/seasoning it is on top after they boil the food.
google avatar

Sandra B.

Yelp
I stopped by the Flying Fish a few nights ago and ordered an Oyster Po Boy with a side of red beans and rice. The po boy was perfect, with plenty of oysters. The oysters were hot, crispy, and cooked perfectly. The tomatoes and lettuce was fresh. I opted for red beans and rice instead of fries. The rice was cooked perfectly! I was a little disappointed in the serving size of beans. I had a nice pile of rice, and maybe a tablespoon of beans on top, with zero liquid. They were so delicious! I wanted a proportionate serving on top of the rice. I have been here before and although the food was really good, I feel like this time was extra delicious. The environment was clean, the dining area is spacious and inviting. I came in alone and was warmly welcomed, and felt comfortable eating solo. I will definitely continue to eat here.
google avatar

Joani N.

Yelp
I love everything about this place, from the relaxed atmosphere to the delicious food. The service is always wonderful and no sooner am I done with my meal than I'm already looking forward to my next visit. I highly recommend this little neighborhood gem.
google avatar

Kenzie J.

Yelp
We come here often and it is one of our go-to spots in Houston. We love the casual ambiance to mix things up and the seafood is always fresh. The gumbo is a bit nontraditional, as gumbo can be, but I order it every time.
google avatar

Jennifer W.

Yelp
Very bland shrimp and catfish. Fried jalapeño appetizer was crusted in cornmeal which was not what I expected. Tarter sauce had no flavor.

Edith M.

Yelp
I always order the Vera with the red snapper I get the fish fried crispy DELICIOUS The manager Roy is very nice and helpful
google avatar

Kelly W.

Yelp
I ordered simple, a fried catfish plate to-go. They must have given me catfish from the week before. It was THAT soggy. The fries and hushpuppies were, too. If I wanted soggy food, I would have just driven to Kroger and bought a pack of sponges for 2 bucks. Yes, it was THAT bad....... $15 bucks I'll never see again, but, oh well, lesson learned.....never go back! -even if the sign said "Free Food"......keep on driving.......

Susanne M.

Yelp
The catfish was mushy and had no taste. I called and spoke to the manager, Roy and he was very rude and disrespectful. I will never go back.
google avatar

Shawn Q.

Yelp
To the casual traveler driving down either West 19th Street or North Durham Drive, Flying Fish may not look like a whole lot, but it's possibly the best kept seafood secret in Houston. Its main "schtick" is the Billy Bass Adoption Center and just about every wall is lined with a Billy Bass someone brought in for a free dinner. You're bound to laugh when you see it the first time. The food, on the other hand, is serious business and seriously good. I have previously ordered fried catfish, shrimp, gumbo, jambalaya, and just tonight I tried the grilled catfish plate. All have been superb and none of them have disappointed me. The drink selection is the standard Coca-Cola products with sweetened and unsweetened iced tea, as well as lemonade (which I personally cannot vouch for, but others have told me it's good). Don't let appearances fool you; this is an excellent fast casual seafood joint hiding in plain sight.
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
Always great service and incredible food. Menu had a variety of entrees. Recently I jumped from the gumbo which is awesome to the Crawfish Chowder! The chowder is incredible. Fantastic flavor and large portions. Add it to your bucket list at the Flying Fish!

Jay P.

Yelp
The food was "bleh".. It wasn't necessarily bad but I also don't see myself going back, that's for sure.
google avatar

Courtney E.

Yelp
Love this cool little spot! Such a neat ambiance, very tasty seafood, super friendly staff and strong margaritas. We will certainly be back! Glad we found you Flying Fish :)
google avatar

Maritza Z.

Yelp
Overall great experience. We went with a few friends & we all got something different. Hula poppers, BBQ shrimp with zucchini & hush puppies, fried shrimp & poboy were absolutely delicious. Beer was super cold & margarita was pretty tasty. Raw oysters were good Fried pickles were okay. We got 4 pounds of crawfish & yes I know it's early in the season, but we're craving them size: kind of small, needed way more seasoning/flavor & seemed like they weren't purged. We also got 1/2 Lb. of crab legs & 1/2 Lb. of shrimp and those were pretty yum, but again needed a bit more flavor. We will definitely be back.

C G.

Yelp
4 Fried Shrimp 1 catfish, & French fries. Food was good. I would return, minus the catfish, it just wasn't IT for catfish. Service was excellent, quick, and friendly. The place was very clean.

Paula S.

Yelp
Laid back atmosphere, kid friendly, great family experience. I take my grandson here and he feels like a king
google avatar

Carlos G.

Yelp
Unremarkable I wanted some good fish and shrimp But found the taste just wasn't there It was ok but nothing special considering the prices...

Mr And M.

Yelp
The food and service is usually outstanding. If you love seafood and a family friendly atmosphere dine here.

Jonathan D.

Yelp
Hygiene and food safety I feel the quality of food has risen den since the last time I was here about a year ago. I live within a few minutes of this spot. However, I was dining alone so I had not much else to do but observe the staff. Do Ning room was a wreck with dirty tables for one and a customer notified them of the unbiased dining room. Then I observed an employee eating behind the line and licking her fingers and continuing to handle food orders. I was disgusted to say the least...I give this place a chance about once a year and every time there is something very wrong with this eatery....Every TIME.
google avatar

Tamla C.

Yelp
On Yesterday, some fitness friends and I went to The Flying Fish located in the Heights area! To celebrate our wonderful Zumba instructors B-day! And, everyone definitely brung their appetite. Walk-in you order your food ,and you can request how on you want your food to be prepared healthy wise. Also, it had a cool atmosphere and friendly service. Seafood was freshly made and everyone enjoyed their meals. So, I'll give them a 2 Thumbs Ups!!!

Carol L.

Yelp
The service is always friendly, the food is fresh and tasty and the portions are ample. What a great neighborhood restaurant!
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
I love their daily specials, the food is hot and fresh.. amazing prices my go to for fish
google avatar

Jaylen E.

Yelp
The fried fish and shrimp was good. Also recommend the banana pudding but the crawfish was horrible. The worst I've ever had.
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
Flying fish ha what a joke more like dieing fish !!! It's a No for me . Red beans and rice lacked so much flavor that salt and pepper couldn't even save it . Tasted like something you would give a toddler. I'm not making this up the only thing that remotely tasted good was the hush puppies. Other then that forget it. Absolute worst catfish I have ever tasted . Had to drown it in tartar sauce and ketchup... with some hot sauce . From the outside restaurant seems super small but honeslty I was shocked on the actual real size of the restaurant after walking in the doors . Kinda big . It's a self serve drink and condiments section that was cool . Lemonade was tart but definitely helping me swallow that food down. Wouldn't return even if the sign said free food . One more thing the fried shrimp where the skinniest shrimp they could find .. super thin . Long John silvers taste better then this and that says a lot . At least six tables where dirty with no one cleaning up as I was trying to find a place to sit
google avatar

Amber G.

Yelp
Over cooked red snapper, dried out beans and rice and the worst overcooked fishy tasting crawfish Iv ever had.
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
Im going to post some pictures when i get them from my friends phone. But this place was a sitting at the red light choice, and it was the best choice we made that day. The food was so fresh and delicious it was the perfect day for a sit down and eat fresh shrimp and fish. We met some more super foodies while sitting there. The restaurant did have handicap parking and this place was on my top 10 of fresh food. They had hand sanitizer for or at ur convenience. And the staff was super friendly. But that salad wad humongous. But if ur looking for a dive to dive in on the weekend. Try this spot out and i guarantee you won't be disappointed. Until then wash ur hands or sanitizer them all in the same breath.

Yelp
When you first walk in , it not only looks great with decor, and smells great, but the ac blows wonderful we ordered, 2 fountain drinks, 2 orders of the 2 catfish with 4 shrimp platter, I added a side salad, key lime pie and my friend added 4 pounds of crawfishthe fish platter's & salad where perfect the crawfish was a little bit over cooked, she added sausage, I believe they put like 3 or 4 pieces, and like two potatoes one corn. I wish for the amount of crawfish they would have added more sausage, potatoes & corn. But every place is different, this one you buy separately, some places you get it already mixed in together, and a big quantity..the key lime pie I wanted to wait till after my food so they stated they put it up till I was ready..which they did..when I got it it was a bit watery at the bottom and the Only part I liked was the top, which was a bit disappointing..other than that we will definitely be back, next time I plan to try something different possibly from their baked menu....I will update when I do Definitely recommend
