Where to Find the Best Pies in Houston | Eater Houston

"This family-owned bakery in Garden Oaks is a Houston institution for its vast menu of house-made fruit and cream pies — all of which are offered first-come, first-serve. Arrive early at around 7 a.m. to choose from more than a dozen falvors, including its traditional apple pie prepared with warm spices and tender apple slices in a double crust, or the pecan pie — topped with a layer of caramelized pecan pieces, which is a holiday favorite." - Brittany Britto Garley

The Flying Saucer in Houston is a hidden gem for pie lovers. Their Strawberry Pie is simply divine, a perfect blend of sweet and tart. The staff is incredibly helpful, making the experience even more enjoyable. While Wednesday before Thanksgiving was a madhouse with long lines, the early morning visit was well worth it. The efficiency of the staff ensured a smooth and timely service. Whether it's a busy holiday or a casual weekday, Flying Saucer is a must-visit for anyone seeking a delightful pie experience.

Why haven't you gone here yet? What you don't like pie? Your not even a quitter if you haven't tried. Someone please tell these people just how serious pie from this establishment really is! Look we getting married and I find out you don't like pie... well your best friend loves pie, look I don't want no smoke I just don't know you anymore if I find out you don't like pie. 😉

Google
Came here relatively late and ordered about 3 pies for $18-21 each! The place has a large kitchen with several pies made fresh each day. We got apple, coconut cream, and strawberry cream pie! The pies were sweet with a nice crust. The cream was sweet but not overwhelming, which is great! Fortunately we came at a time where the line was short, but I have heard it can get long, so be prepared!

Google
I have been buying pies from Flying Sauser sense 1976 .They were the best pies I ever bought. I recently bought three pies for a family graduation, I don't know what happened but that was the worst pies ever from that establishment. I bought a Coconut cream,Strawberry cream and a banana cream. That was money wasted because those pies was horrible. All three pies was bad.I was so disappointed.

Google
This place is a Houston tradition. They have all kinds of pies that are very like homemade. But they aren't really better pies than the major grocery stores bake in house and they're probably a little bit more expensive. Costco has the Best Buy's hand down that you can buy made up in Houston ready to go

Google
Well the press on this place is all good. Is this the best pie I've ever had? No. It is good enough to stop by and get you some though. The 4 different kinds I tried ranged from well above average to just average. The pecan and Dutch apple were good enough to buy more again. The strawberry and plain apple were just good. This pie place is good enough to go back to again and try more of there varieties. Worth the trip.

Google
Hi guys!... I don't know if you at flying saucer read this or not, but let me tell you. no more pineapple pies for me...obviously you changed the recipe. not on the crust but the filling. the filling is mostly corn syrup (the Sweetner) almost no pineapple, but lots and lots of corn syrup not good it all. Now I have to find me another place with good pineapple pies. thank you Flying Saucer Pie Co. for more of 30 years of pies thanks.

Google
Had been interested in coming here for a while before stopping by. They have a good selection of whole pies and I am glad they sell by slices, too. Got slices of cherry, banana cream, and key lime pies. I liked the pies but my wife thought the cherry and key lime were a little tarter than she likes. Staffers were friendly and the place was very welcoming.

Yelp
Out this world!!! Always friendly and fast staff. If you are looking for a pie any pie this is your place to come. Regular pies as well as cream pies. They sell as whole or also as slices. Prices are reasonable and usually no wait time. Do expect wait time on holidays but overall they move pretty quick.

Yelp
Today is Pi Day and the first place that I think of for pies is the Flying Sauce Pie Company. I bought several pies to sample and share. They even cut the pies into either six or eight pieces upon request. Starting with the fruit pies seemed like a reasonable substitute for lunch and I was right. The crust on the apple pie was flaky and the filling was flavorful with notes of mildly sweet caramel. The cherry pie crust was flaky and the filling was tart and mildly sweet. I finished my tour-de-pies with a couple of cream pies. The coconut cream pie was solid. I enjoyed the flavor and was pleased that it was not overpowering sweet. The strawberry cream pie, on the other hand, over-the-top sweet and refreshing. It's easy to see why the strawberry cream pie is their number one seller.

Yelp
$20 for a pumpkin pie , bragging to your family about these pies and then opening it to find mold = priceless I had been looking forward to showing off these out of the world pies to my family. Just my 2nd year buying them because of the loyal following it has. But man oh man so disappointed. I bought the pie Monday afternoon 11/20 and tried opening up the box for a slice Thanksgiving lunch. This is what I found. I looked on their website under FAQ and did not find anything about pumpkin pie flavor :/ nor did they tell me in store anything about recommendation on refrigerator or not. I tried to call the store too but they had already closed the lines since they sold out of pies. I'll never know if they gave me a warm pie in a box and closed the lid or if I was suppose to refrigerate. All I know is there another pie company in town (popular too) and I've never had problems with them (like not refrigerated them) . Back to House of Pies I go! Pretty bummed about it but really more embarrassed. Looking for a refund at a minimum.

Yelp
Banana cream $3.75/slice - decent pie. It just needed to be sweeter. The crust was very good and crispy. It was full of bananas, but the filling just wasn't sweet enough. I felt like i was eating just a pie crust with bananas. Their whipped cream is also not sweet, although there is a lot of it. Strawberry cheesecake $3.75/slice - definitely the better of the 2. The cheesecake was good without being too rich. Crust was good. Strawberry topping was good, but I didn't get any actual strawberry pieces. Whole pies are $18-20. If they were out of strawberry cheesecake, I would've tried the strawberry cream since I think that's what they're known for. Alternatives wouldve been chocolate cream, pecan pie, or coconut cream. Overall, not bad for trying, but honestly probably won't be back just because there are other dessert places I want to try while living near the Heights.
google avatar

Luis T.

Yelp
Worst strawberry pie in my life. It haws basically all whipped cream with a very think layer of crust. I'll try their pecan one next time but this one was just bad.

Yelp
Stopped by on pi day to get a couple slices. We got 1 chocolate and 1 banana for $8 total. The slices are big. They taste really good, I want to try more flavors! The services was quick. Will be back!

Yelp
This pie is pretty solid when it comes to Houston options, but I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to get it again in comparison to House of Pies. Parking is easy and there's a lot next door. They sell a bunch of different pies. The employee recommended the blueberry, so we got a slice of that and a slice of peach pie. The pies were crusty and had a lot of filling. Blueberry was a little bit too jammy and sweet, but the peach was delicious!

Yelp
Flying Saucer is a staple of my neighborhood, on the Northside of Houston you can find the most delightful pies you've ever encountered. Everything is super fresh! Staff is kind and helpful, my favorite menu item here is the STRAWBERRY PIE! A beautiful pie! Just beautiful inside & out the sweetest, tart, jumbo sized fresh strawberries in every bite!
google avatar

Yelp
I finally stopped by after having had this place on my try list for years. Came by on a random Wednesday afternoon and there was no line with plenty of selection to choose from. I am a big fruit pie fan so I opted to try several of those flavors plus a slice of their Key Lime pie. I think the Key Lime/mousse or custard based pies is where they shine. The fruit ones I tried, while tasty, had less fruit than I would have wanted to have in a slice and more sweet goo. I can imagine that their pumpkin or pecan pies would be a big hit at Fall gatherings. True rating would probably be a 3.5, but I will round up to 4 as there is more of their menu that I need to try.

Yelp
We wandered in because we love pie! The kooky name was just a bonus. How can anyone resist a place with "pie" and "flying saucer" in the name outside. If you like pie you will not be disappointed. We got a Dutch apple and the pie was fabulous! I also enjoyed a slice of key lime pie. Just for comparison purposes, it is a personal favorite of mine. I am shocked to report that I liked the key lime pie, but I liked the Dutch Apple even better! The counter service was fast and friendly. The ambiance is that of a working bakery, so don't imagine you will be enjoying your pie on site. Go early for your holiday pie. They say the line is outrageous!

Yelp
Stop to get dessert after picking up awesome chicken from Barbecue Inn. Do you like fruit pies? They have the fruits and they put them in pie shells and wow yummy. They also have banana cream, key lime and some custard pies. You can buy pie by the slice and eat it in the parking lot because anytime is a good time for pie. Two types of apple pie, Dutch with the cinnamon sugar top and then just regular apple pie with crispy crust. They also have Pecan pie. Might as well get a whole pie and have pie for breakfast. Next time someone asks you if you have pie, definitely say yes and head to this fantastic place and get them all. Freaking awesome pies!!!

Annie H.

Yelp
Great pies all the time. Strawberry Cream pie is my favorite. FSP is also a Houston staple.

Yelp
I bought a apple pie and A key lime pie from this bakery. It ruined our Thanksgiving. The keyline pie barely tasted like lime tasted more like somebody's perfume bottle spilled in it and the apple was mushi not good. Sad I had heard positive reviews
google avatar

Bobby M.

Yelp
I ordered two types of pies. I ordered their Dutch Apple Pie and their Banana Cream Pie. Both pies had the best pie crust I have ever had, but for me the crumble or topping if you will on top of the apple pie I thought was the next best thing next to sliced bread. I had to control myself to not stand next to the refrigerator with fork in hand and not embarrass myself. Needles to say their pie fillings, the pie crust, and flavors were spot on. I posted a picture of both pies.

Laura A.

Yelp
The best thing about Flying Saucer is the crust, very light and crisp. Old fashioned flavor and a bit crumbly. The pumpkin pie is good along the same flavor profile as Libby's can pumpkin recipe with really good spice. Again, excellent crust. Peach pie was well stuffed with fruit and flavorful. The fresh fruit strawberry pie was disappointing. Under the cream and strawberry jell were very few giant whole strawberries. This made the pie light and fluffy but then had only a few pieces of fruit that were not sliced, meaning a huge chunk mouthful strawberry randomly in the pie. Hard to eat. Wonderful tasting crust but so flaky it crumbles. Excellent eating, poor presentation as the pie slices look like a pile instead of a slice. Pricing $20-23 per pie. Single slice $4. No tables or on sight eating. The line was ten deep when I arrived. Checkout was efficient it only took 10 minutes-ish to wait in line, order and checkout.

Yelp
Tried their pies for the first time. Bought key lime, coconut, lemon and blueberry. Just tasted the blueberry pie and it is outstanding!!! Delicious with the right amount of tartness and sweetness. Crust is flaky and well baked. Can't wait to try all the flavors. Highly recommend. Will go back and get the whole blueberry pie next time.

Yelp
My family has been getting pies from here forever! My grandmother , mother, and now me. Our favorite is the coconut cream pie and key lime pie. The banana cream is nice but doesn't seem as yummy as it use to be when I was younger. Not sure what changed. The employees are professional and friendly. The place smells delicious when you go in too! Clean, and organized looking work area! No pictures of the pies their gone. Sorry!

Esmeralda ..

Yelp
Wasn't too packed got a cheesecake and pecan pie slice was only 8$10/10 would deff try again
google avatar

Yelp
Wanted to try this place after my friend suggested it and the place itself is really good! The mural outside is super cute and when you go inside, they have a LOT of pies! I had really high hopes and I even got 4 pies but the coconut cream pie and and pineapple pie was a little disappointing. Peaches and cream smelled heavenly though
google avatar

Yelp
Glad they have a local pie place Workers are vaccinated but will wear a mask if asked Baked fresh daily yummy. I asked for individual slices and was so excited but disappointed that they partially messed up my order. Instead of blackberry, I got chocolate. The banana cream pie is delicious so fresh. I also liked the fresh strawberry pie with slices of strawberries. The key lime pie has the right texture just not enough tang. The Dutch apple pie was just okay. It was @$20 for 6 slices. Highly recommended! I need to try more pie!
google avatar

Yelp
Bought a cream pie and it was delicious. Would highly recommend this place. Good stuff and will definitely return.

Adam S.

Yelp
We grabbed a couple of slices because our daughter wanted some pie on her birthday. We were pretty disappointed...after looking at a variety, none looked great so I went with chocolate (special request) and lemon (because my daughter has been loving lemonade). Very disappointed. It's basically a grocery store crust, pudding type filling, and a massive amount of cool whip on top. Very simplistic and not very tasty. Some may appreciate it, but after having an excellent chocolate cress pie in Fort Worth last weekend (at the same price point), this was a massive step back. Sadly, we will be looking elsewhere for a quality pie in the area.

Vicki M.

Yelp
Got key lime pies for Thanksgiving. They were inedible. The pie was a duck brown color and had a chemical taste. Just horrible.
google avatar

Yelp
flying saucer pie company is one of the best around you can't beat homemade cream pies at all during the holidays and this is the spot to get them! are you willing to camp out? wake up early in morning hours to wait hours in line delicious Flying Saucer Holiday Pies. I hope yes because its very rewarding. I do recommend going early for the fact pies do sell out during these holiday weeks. prices are still very affordable on all pies and slices and make sure to always check and call when they are open, you don't want to head there and expect when they are open as this happened to be one time as that was my fault for not checking :-) I have been coming to buy pies for several years now and I have tried almost all pies on their menu and I must say they are insanely fresh and delicious. I have had classic apple pie, strawberry creme pie, strawberry cheesecake creme pie, key lime pie, pumpkin pie, coconut creme , pecan pie, banana creme pie just to name a few and I must say my favorites hand down is the banana creme and strawberry cheesecake pies. wowers! that banana creme pie with the graham cracker crust banana filling and creme on top is something to die for! the strawberry cheesecake is sooooo good its the crust! and the strawberry topping is heavenly. nothing like having some good pies around the holidays and also makes a great gift for friends and family that will make them happy!

Marilyn M.

Yelp
The pies were very delicious. Waited in line for an hour during thanksgiving week but not complaining because it always get busy at this time. Will go again this year as well.
google avatar

Jason R.

Yelp
I tried the strawberry cheesecake pie and chocolate cream pie. It wasn't bad, but definitely not sweet enough for my liking. It's probably my sweet tooth.
google avatar

Brittany B.

Yelp
It's almost the time of year when a fair share of Houstonians wait hours in line for the sweet reward of delicious Flying Saucer Holiday Pies. You wouldn't expect much from this small little building, but they crank out desserts packed with butter, sugar and love at affordable prices. A few quick tips: *check the hours before you go (especially around the holidays). Apart from the holiday hours they are usually not open on Monday * At this point I've tried most of the pies. By slice or pie, invest in the strawberry pie and thank me later. *Yes, you can walk in and buy whole pies (and I do it more often than I'd like to admit) *They have pie care tips, expirations, and freezing instructions on their website

Yelp
I finally tried this place even though it was a long drive. I ordered 3 pie slices with the flavors being cherry, strawberry and coconut cream. The lady said they didn't sell peach this year, which is why I chose strawberry to fill in the slot and also bc I have heard that it's supposedly their top selling pie. The cherry pie was great and tasty with a lot of tasty, juicy, slightly tart cherries and good buttery crust. The strawberry pie was great and tasty with plenty of soft, sweet, glazed strawberries and good buttery crust. The coconut cream pie people raved about was just not doing it for me. I like the creamy, shampoo type taste coconut cream often has. This one was very toasty and just didn't have that pleasing coconut taste I hoped for imo. The service was efficient and friendly. Proud Pie is my all time favorite pie place, but I still think this establishment beats out House of Pies and Pie Factory.
google avatar

Bridget R.

Yelp
Great pies and can't wait to try more. By face my favorite is the strawberry cheesecake!
google avatar

Alexus N.

Yelp
Word on the street was right, they do have some AMAZING pies! I cannot express how much I appreciate them listing all their details in regards to "Thanksgiving Week" on their site. Literally, everything. Even FAQs. I went on the Monday of Thanksgiving week as it was stated the least busiest day. I came here about 2pm and no crazy wait. Probably 3-4 people ahead of me. Normal wait. Staff was very swift and efficient. I would highly suggest reading the site if you ever plan on going Thanksgiving week or during a busy holiday week. I went with the pecan and apple pies. Pecan pie wasn't too sweet, just the way I like it. Apple pie didn't disappoint either. Great crust. Man was it satisfying fresh out of the oven, served with a side of vanilla ice cream! Don't worry, there's instructions on how to store and bake the pies on their site too! Definitely a place to cheat on your diet! I'd return to try other pies. Keep in mind, during the hectic holiday week they don't sell slices, just whole pies.
google avatar

Melissa A.

Yelp
They have such a great selection of pies here! By the slice or the whole pie you can't go wrong. We decided as a family to try the Keylime, the strawberry, the peach, chocolate, and cheesecake. We were not disappointed in any of them. The crust was flaky and buttery the chocolate was creamy and silky while the Keylime was on point and both sweetness and sourness. I highly recommend flying saucer pie company to anyone who loves pie. After all thousands of people in Houston and across the nation can't be wrong.

David M.

Yelp
Coconut Cream pie was a huge disappointment. Need to find a new recipe as the one you are using is not good. Sorry but the truth!!

Brandon B.

Yelp
The worst! If I could leave zero stars I would. Manger is as rude as the pies are bland. Glad I didn't wait 4 hours in line for a crappy pie. Spend your time and money elsewhere.
google avatar

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
It's a Houston institution, right? We went the other day to pick up a chocolate cream pie. Of course it was delicious. My husband and mother-in-law have stories of waiting in line for hours before Thanksgiving to get their hands on some pies. The staff is friendly. Whenever I get the feeling that I need some pie in my life, flying saucer is the only place I think of.
google avatar

Jared N.

Yelp
Amazing pies old school flavors too. Would always recommend. I don't know what else to write
google avatar

Medina K.

Yelp
I've been a customer here for some time now. I usually get the lemon pie and apple pie. This time I tried the Boston Creme, lemon and apple and all of them were pretty mediocre. I don't know what was going on with the lemon one but I gave up after a few bites. It was tart and the color was off a little to me.
google avatar

Audreaya C.

Yelp
This place has great pies . I love the cheese cakes, apple pies, and pecan pies . They have great fast and friendly service.

Santiago Z.

Yelp
We have been going to this establishment for years. The pies are incredible. But do not try to go during the holidays, it is a mad house. I love the strawberry pie, that's my favorite. My daughters enjoy the chocolate mouse pie, and my wife enjoys the apple pie. I recommend them all.

Kennin W.

Yelp
Loved the series they where nice even though they where about to close, the food was amazing !!

Hannah T.

Yelp
I have been eating pie from here since I was a child. It's a been a staple in my family for holidays, however I have definitely noticed a recent decline in not the food, but the service. The workers do a great job at making pie but they are not communicative, example: today, February 1st, 2024, I call to ask if they have any Boston cream pies available since they do run out. Also, this flavor is a Thursday-Saturday only flavor, so it sells out faster than normal in my experience. The lady on the phone tells me they are no longer making these pies. I'm shocked because I just had one last week. So I ask when this decision was made and she said recently, and that they will no longer be making it. Which is fine, but the fact that you put up no signs to notify people or at bare minimum told those of us buying the pies. I just think that the southern hospitality that once was here has vanished. They're not the most friendly staff, they talk to each other but never to the customer in conversation. And they don't communicate policy's changing. It's disappointing because I've always loved this place
google avatar

Tabatha L.

Yelp
After seeing a long line rush before Thanksgiving, I put this place in mind to visit. Well, I was totally disappointed. My mind was set on a sweet potato pie or a lemon meringue pie. They don't even sell them- as I stood there in dismay; I was very indecisive on what to order. Another customer came in after me, and I offered for him to go ahead. The cashier suggested their lemon pie in comparison to a lemon meringue pie with the exception of cool whip on top instead of white egg yolk. So for $13.75 I rolled with it. Man was I totally not happy with my selection... First off the crust, it was too hard, secondly the lemon filling was way tart with a jelly filled donut texture. Their lemon pie is nooooooooo way the same as a good old lemon meringue pie. I will not go back.
google avatar

Linda E.

Yelp
There's a reason why this place draws long lines, most notably during the holidays. This is because they have amazingly delicious pies. I had never tried them before bc I did not want to stand in line but luckily the lines weren't long on Christmas Eve. I wanted to try all of them but settled on coconut cream, strawberry and chocolate. My favorite was the coconut cream pie & I must say it was the best I have ever tasted. The cream and toasty flakes only enhances the cream filling. The other flavors were also delicious! I would definitely recommend this place & cant wait to try other flavors!
google avatar

Christina O.

Yelp
It's okay. It's not the best pie I've had. The one lie I really like they don't sell slices of. Custard one.
google avatar

Destini W.

Yelp
This is hands down one of the best pie shops in Houston. I have been coming here since I was a little girl and the quality has remained the same over the past decades. This place will always be my favorite because of that. I recently got a strawberry pie and it was everything I dreamed of. Graham cracker crust and jelly filling with fresh strawberries baked into it. Their home made whipped cream is to die for! 5 stars go straight to this pie. Of course I will be back.
google avatar

Rex C.

Yelp
Another hype train derailed. We have been eating these for years. I mean years. My uncle is gracious to stand in line for hours every single year. He has been doing this for years. Since I was a kid. I mean the pies are good no doubt. I like the pecan and pumpkin but are they worth staying in line for hours upon hours? HELL NO! This is just a hype train and people see others stand in line and they feel like this is the thing to do. Kind of like when people rush to board a plane and then sit for about 40 mins. I am always the last to board. Back to the pies. again don't get me wrong they make an excellent pie but is It hyped up a bit, yes. I mean I'll eat them for sure and I like them but I think this place is overhyped and really just extremely popular because the news station shows them every year lol. Good for them though. I am glad a business in the hood is doing good
google avatar

Shonnah-lei Lilieni T.

Yelp
Got a banana cream pie from here and it was ok. The crust could definitely be better.
google avatar

Andrea A.

Yelp
Love their pies the one that I live the most is their pumpkin pie is so good. Their Cherry pie is good also.

Jared S.

Yelp
Waited 2 hours in line for an overrated pies. The pies had no flavors Never again buying pies from here. Just go to Whole Food or HEB or buy a Marie Callender's pie. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND TIME!!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Belly G.

Yelp
I've had countless slices of pies from Flying Saucer Pie Company: Apple Pie, Banana Cream Pie, Strawberry Cream Pie, Pecan Pie, whatever. But come to think of it, I never actually stepped foot in the store. All the pies I've had the opportunity of tasting had all been bought by someone else and then shared with me either at parties, or at company events. Well, I finally decided to stop in because I wanted some Pie. This was in the afternoon and it wasn't during a holiday so there was absolutely no line. I came in, the lady behind the counter asked me what I wanted, I told her, I paid, I left. Simply in and out. However, there was no sense of hospitality either. She gave me the impression that she just wanted to give me my pie and then for me to be gone. Meh. Great pies! Arguably the best pies in Houston. But I think I'm going to go back and having other people get the pies here instead of actually coming out here.
