Austin for Vegans: Where to Find the Best Meat-Free Food

"For vegan Chinese food, Xiang Yun Temple is offering regular pickup orders. Sales fund the temple, and dishes range from turnip cakes to sticky rice dumplings to bean curd slices to many vegan sweets. Orders must be placed online for pickups on Saturdays." - Nadia Chaudhury, Erin Russell

Certainly! He I had been wanting to visit this temple for a while, and I finally got the chance to stop by on a Sunday. This place is truly a hidden gem in Austin! From the moment I arrived, I felt a warm and welcoming atmosphere. I was fortunate to join a free guided tour where the guide shared the rich cultures of Buddhism and even drew meaningful parallels to Indian traditions, which I found fascinating. There’s also a small gift shop and a cozy tea room on site. To my pleasant surprise, they offered a complimentary vegetarian lunch.Everyone I met was incredibly kind and hospitable. If you’re looking for a quiet place for meditation or just a peaceful retreat, this temple is perfect. They also offer various programs, and the full schedule is available on their website. I highly recommend visiting!

I love meditation sessions on Saturdays. It provides 20 minutes of body movements with breathing, 20 minutes of sitting meditation followed by group sharing of experiences. There are Tai Chi and Dharma teaching, yoga, book club as well. You can spend all day and they are very welcoming.

Even if you're not Buddhist, it's a beautiful place worth checking out! Recently they put on an event for Chinese New Year and the festivities were quite wonderful. They also put on events throughout the week like tea ceremonies or meditation, which, if you haven't been to a proper meditation workshop I recommend the ones here because they're well paced and have variety.

This is the most beautiful temple that Ive ever visited. You come inside main shrine and feel the most calming and breathtaking decor thar a temple can have. Plus, people here were all so nice. She volunteered to be our tour guide and showed us around the temple and its history. They also hold a lot of celebrations, meditations throughout the year so if I have chances to come back, Id love to join them. Tea room offers vegetarian meals too. Buddha opens his arms for every one, so if you are interested in a nice, calming place, just check it out as a sightseeing place

Fo Guang Shan has Buddhist temples all over the world. This one is smaller comparing to Taiwan and LA, but it is well maintain. I am here during the weekday so it is very quiet. This is the first time I got the chance to speak to the Buddhist nuns and the hear the wisdom of living in peace and harmony. What a treat, and they speaks both Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin) and English. They have gift shops and small eatery. I heard also Sunday brunch. We all living in a stressful life, just a visit to the temple bring you peace in that moment of life. Stop and enjoy everything around you!

Yelp
What a beautiful Buddhist temple! Came for Chinese new year eve in year of the dragon for a chanting ceremony. The monk let everyone feel welcome, even those not speaking mandarin or not Buddhist. Explaining everything that was going on including when to kneel; stand; bow, etc. It was so beautifully decorated for new year and they had red enveloped to give away to visitors as well as incense to burn. Would definitely like to come back for other ceremonies as I felt very much included.

Yelp
This is a beautiful temple and grounds and the caretakers and Buddhist leaders there welcome all comers to explore and learn more without any pressure to join or convert. We enjoyed a relaxed and informative afternoon and plan to return soon. Be sure to plan for lunch at the Xiang Yun tea room on site.

Yelp
This is an absolutely lovely hidden gem. Tucked away amongst corporate offices and highway, the Xiang Yun Temple provides an incredible place to reflect. They also offer a home made meal for ~$7 that comes with tea, samples, and a full plate of food. They also offer a guided mediation most weekends. Highly recommend!

Yelp
A very relaxing temple and the food is good. They usually have vegan food available for lunch.
