Detroit’s Community Organizations Are Changing to Meet the Needs of Food Insecure Detroiters During the Pandemic | Eater Detroit

"After receiving a call from a 70-year-old Food for Seniors recipient who had COVID-19 and couldn’t leave her home, I learned how Focus: Hope pivoted quickly to meet urgent needs: the director of food programs recounted delivering food to the woman’s home where her asymptomatic 89-year-old mother stood on the porch and her 92-year-old husband needed assistance. Observing the risk to the roughly 41,000 low-income seniors its Food for Seniors program serves each month, the nonprofit shifted to contact-free options without shutting down—instituting curbside pickup and home delivery to reach seniors, homebound patients, pregnant mothers, and individuals with chronic health issues who couldn’t travel to mobile sites." - Eater

I live in Madison at 60 I signed up I had to take a bus to Pontiac in a parking lot. I can't get like everybody else. Then Gleaners Racheal was gonna help me with a church in Detroit with door dash to get CSFP but I live in Oakland county. And the city of Madison Hgts senior center told me only help 30 people..... Yet I paid taxes here 15 yrs. These is no equality. I am to give somebody all my info on phone that isn't secure behind a firewall and now at everyone's mercy we went from a firewall security to lined up fired at.....

I was lucky to meet founder Eleanor in the 1980's when we worked the Free Press Marathon. We are very happy to help with Focus: HOPE. My husband and I will volunteer more often. The workers here really had things organized.

Volunteering there to pack food boxes was a great experience. It was great bonding for people getting to know each other. They also had a project ready for those in our group who couldn't stand a long time.

Yelp
I was part of a team that did a food drive for them. We had to deliver food to the elderly. Their operation is Top Notch here. They had all the food items available and boxed and ready for us to taking our vehicle and get to location. Everything was well organized with phone numbers of the clients and addresses were set properly , and forms for recipients to sign if necessary.

Yelp
Saturday night we held our all Louisiana HBCU Mardi Gras in Motown Cabaret fundraiser in the East Ballroom. The staff was so easy to work with and accommodating. The event rooms are spacious and come with tables, chairs and chair covers. The rooms are also carpeted so you will need to rent a dance floor. They also have a prep kitchen and 2 refrigerators for storage. The only con is that only had one cart available to transport items from the door to the room upstairs. I suggest that people have their own carts or buggies. All of our guests enjoyed themselves and we look forward to hosting our event next year. Call Robyn and get Information to book your next event!!

Yelp
There are many exceptional ways to volunteer in metro-Detroit, but what's special about Focus: Hope is the interaction you have with the wonderful people receiving aid from their programs. Over the weekend I took a group of students from my non-profit, the Good Girl Comeback, to volunteer at Focus: Hope and we had an amazing experience! While researching places where we could volunteer I fell in love with the mission of Focus: Hope: "Recognizing the dignity and beauty of every person, we pledge intelligent and practical action to overcome racism, poverty, and injustice. And to build a metropolitan community where all people may live in freedom, harmony, trust and affection. Black and white, yellow, brown and red from Detroit and its suburbs of every economic status, national origin and religious persuasion we join in this covenant." We quickly learned that they lived up to their mission! Our task was to deliver boxes of food to homebound senior citizens throughout Detroit. When we arrived at Focus: Hope we were briefed on our responsibilities and given about six delivery stops per car. The addresses, directions and paperwork was thoroughly prepared and well organized. From there we piled back into our cars and set out to make our deliveries. It was beautiful to see the young students make an effort to spend time with each person we delivered food to. Every person we encountered was friendly, welcoming and appreciative - it was truly a joy to connect with elderly members of our community. Everyone we met at Focus: Hope was friendly and welcoming. The warehouse where we picked up the food was organized and clean. Overall, we had a wonderful experience giving back to our beloved Detroit.
