I recently celebrated my birthday this past Saturday at Focus Social Lounge in DC. While I had high hopes for the experience--especially after hearing good things--I walked away extremely disappointed with several aspects of the day.
Let's start with the brunch. The food itself was actually good, and I'll give credit where it's due there. However, the atmosphere was unbearably hot. We repeatedly asked the staff to adjust the air conditioning, but we were told it was already on and that there was nothing more they could do. It was literally burning up inside. With large windows in the ceiling allowing in intense sunlight, this space needs serious improvements to climate control--whether that's covering the windows, adding fans, or upgrading the AC system. It was uncomfortable for everyone.
Then, there's the issue with the "unlimited" mimosas. We had a party of 14 people, yet they only brought out two carafes at a time. By the time everyone poured a glass, they were gone--and trying to find our waitress for refills became a constant struggle. It felt like we were chasing down basic service the entire time. If you're going to advertise unlimited mimosas, be prepared to provide them consistently and efficiently, especially for large parties.
Unfortunately, the experience didn't improve during the day party. The customer service was again below expectations. I had reserved a table, and my cousin had reserved two additional tables in advance. Despite him having confirmation for both tables, we were told he couldn't book two at the same price, and that one would have to be upgraded--something that wasn't mentioned at all during booking. After nearly 30 minutes of back-and-forth with a staff member (who first claimed to be speaking with the manager, and then later claimed to be the manager), they finally agreed to honor the reservation as originally confirmed. The lack of transparency and professionalism here was frustrating and honestly unacceptable.
All in all, this experience fell far short of what a birthday celebration should be. Me and my party made the best of the situation since we couldn't get a refund. Between the extreme heat, poor service during brunch, and the mishandled reservation situation during the day party, I felt frustrated and disappointed.
I'm sharing this not to bash the establishment, but in hopes that the management team at Focus Social Lounge takes this feedback seriously. Improvements in customer service, communication, and overall guest comfort are urgently needed.
