7 Charming, Small Wine Towns in California to Visit - AFAR

"Set in blond woods, the dining room at Appellation Healdsburg’s Folia Bar & Kitchen offers a relaxed, sunlit setting as part of Reed Palmer’s new Healdsburg outpost; it ties into the town’s recent luxury-hospitality growth and continues the family’s focus on local farmers, winemakers, and artisans that helped make Healdsburg a culinary destination." - Justin Goldman

Folio Bar & Kitchen at Appellation Healdsburg Comes From a Father-Son Duo With Serious Food Chops | Eater SF

"Part of Appellation Healdsburg’s check-in area, this restaurant greets arriving guests at a wooden Boos Block counter with a bite from the kitchen and possibly a cocktail in development or a taste of wine, setting a homey, kitchen-first tone. Chef de cuisine Reed Palmer leads the kitchen under his father, Charlie Palmer, alongside hotel executive chef David Intonato, drawing on wide-ranging experience while collaborating closely with family on the restaurant’s details. An open-fire wood grill fueled by locally harvested oak is the menu’s main flavor driver, with local sourcing from purveyors like Hog Island Oyster Co., 38 North Poultry, and produce from Singlethread Farms, plus plans to harvest from the hotel’s own garden; a grilled or smoked element finds its way across much of the menu while preparations stay simple and respectful to the ingredients. Dishes include duck breast slowly cooked, smoked, and rendered over the fire with Swiss chard and oyster mushrooms, a grilled pork chop, olive oil-poached halibut, and a chile pepper rock fish for two; starters range from heirloom tomatoes with grilled apricots to spaghetti alla nerano with summer squash, and snacks span salumi, yellowtail crudo with nectarine and plum vinaigrette, and a savory manchego bread pudding that repurposes Quail and Condor sourdough. Reed calls the cooking “new American,” while Charlie dubs it “progressive American,” the next generation of farm-to-table, and the bar inside the restaurant is more wine-focused. Opening Wednesday, September 3, it serves daily from breakfast through dinner, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., with reservations available via OpenTable." - Dianne de Guzman

We did the course menu for a party of 3. It didnt start out well since we booked a standard indoor dining and then was seated at the bar. Because we were seated at the bar, we were provided with limited menu. Then, we were seated again outside for a dining experience but its not nice having to sit outside so late when we booked indoor dining. The food was very nice and fortunately, our waiter was very kind as well. Despite ordering the course menu, the gap between each course was too long. I understand that there are some things to figure out at a new restaurant. I will return in a few months, but this particular experience doesnt live up to the expectations of a charlie palmer restaurant.

We went on Opening Day and the energy around the ribbon cutting was incredible. The menu takes classics and gives them a thoughtful twist — the iced oysters with a cherry tomato were something I never knew I always wanted (camera didn't get to eat first). My husband ordered the burger and gave it high praise. The wine list is beautifully curated, with strong local support alongside iconic names from beyond California. We brought a special bottle for his birthday and ordered a Champagne from their list. We finished it out by the courtyard fire pit — a perfect end to a lovely meal. The space is stunning, with fun details like hidden silverware drawers at the tables, and the rooftop bar is a spot we can’t wait to revisit with friends. In regards to parking, we ubered and dropped off at valet so unsure what the driving to situation is. The only small hiccup was that my to-go bag didn’t make it home with me — it was accidentally tossed while we were outside — but I chalk that up to opening-day learning curves. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and I’m looking forward to many return visits!

The food, atmosphere and the staff are amazing. I loved the home made pasta and the duck! The avocado salad is now my go to also. I love the deserts. Yummy 😋

We had a wonderful experience dining at folia yesterday. We tried the patê, the appetizer pasta, the halibut, the skirt steak, and a couple of desserts. Every single item was delicious. Steak was buttery tender. My favorite may have been the patê (like a terrine) but everything was delicious, even the Basque Pistacho cheesecake which I ordered with low expectations having been to La Viña in Basque Country 3 times, was perfect. It was light and moist and not overly sweet yum!

Charlie Palmer is a legend and this place delivered. We choose the 3 course Prix Fixe menu for $85. I had the koginut squash pasta (good) and the duck (amazing). Wifey had the baby iceberg salad (amazing) and the flat iron steak (good). The duck was the best I have ever had. Great setting with floor to ceiling glass overlooking the resorts lounge area. The service was impeccable and we will definitely be back!

My fiancé and I celebrated our anniversary at Folia and had an amazing experience! We were greeting by the in house sommelier with some complimentary bubbles which was a great start to our dinner experience. Our server Christian recommended the most amazing dishes that we cannot stop gushing over. The clam pasta and flat iron steak were our favorites of the night without a doubt. I would have licked the plate if I could! The atmosphere and staff were impecable and lively! I will definitely be going back and recommending to everyone I know! I will say it was a little hard to find because signage isn’t the biggest yet it made it feel like a hidden gem.

Google
Excellent food and well-trained, attentive staff. Very excited about this new spot! Congrats to all on a job well done. The endive salad with ricotta salata was one of the best salads I've ever had. The pork schnitzel was fantastic - really can't say enough good things.

Google
I have to give Folia 5 stars. The fish of the day was kampachi. We Shared Moist tender. Perfect spices atop a bed of delicious rice. Staff was super attentive and polite. The ambience was incredible. You’ll have a hard time deciding where to sit. Met the chef Reed Palmer. Going to be a star! Brand new restaurant. Already hitting it out of the ballpark. Crazy!

Yelp
The question is would I eat here again - absolutely. Quirks I would list. - limited menu (but worked great for me) - you help yourself to silverware from a draw at the end of the table. Otherwise, ambience is lovely for any type of dining, from casual to date night and intimate. Lovely. Service is what you would expect, attentive but not bothersome. When booking let them know if anyone is gluten free and they can prepare for you. Even the pasta. Tonight I share Cranberry Bean Toast - strange sounding yes, would love to know the inspiration but spicy and delicious. I then had the pasta dish, KOGINUT SQUASH PASTA - If it would not have been rude I would have licked every last drop of the sauce and the pasta itself was cooked to perfection. I closed out with a cappuccino that again was perfect. Now, looking for the next reason to go. Like the sun come up!! Thanks for a delightful dinner. Ps. Did not take photos as I did not think appropriate on this visit.

Yelp
Well, we got food poisoning from the duck, which rendered me out of service for the whole weekend. In hindsight, it did look a little pink, but I figured a high-end establishment knows what it is doing. So, even though the ambiance was nice and the service was great, I can't come back here. One other weird thing: Two other people in our party ordered the chicken, which seems like a fairly vanilla dish. But they served it with the chicken feet deep fried on the side of the dish. Chicken feet don't necessarily bother me, but the sight of it really grossed out a few other people in our party. It was quite shocking to see because I don't think I've ever seen chicken feet on a Western dinner table before.

Yelp
Tonight we sat outside on the patio, and the ambience was absolutely beautiful. Honestly, I think we could hear each other better outside than we would have indoors. Both the interior and exterior spaces are stunning -- warm lighting, thoughtful decor, and an overall atmosphere that feels elegant but relaxed. We learned that the property has over 20 olive trees, each between 125 and 150 years old, scattered throughout the grounds, which really adds to the charm. Service was excellent. The sommelier stopped by, as did several staff members throughout the evening, but it never felt repetitive or impersonal. Everyone was attentive and in sync, which I really appreciated. They offer a pre-fixe menu with a choice of first and second courses, followed by a dessert course from a separate menu. You can also add à la carte appetizers or nightly specials. For my first course, I had the Manila clam pasta -- a well-balanced dish with an interesting sauce that was both buttery and slightly tart, featuring bits of bacon. Delicious and unique. The complimentary bread basket was another highlight -- a mix of assorted breads served with soft butter sprinkled with sea salt flakes. For our appetizer, we shared the savory bread pudding, which was excellent -- tender, flavorful, and topped with finely shaved cheese. For my main course, I chose the cioppino. It was good -- the seafood was cooked properly, and the fennel added a nice touch -- but it lacked depth of flavor and portion size compared to other dishes at the table. The duck, on the other hand, was outstanding: rich, tender, and perfectly cooked. The steak also looked incredible, so I'd recommend either of those as a main. For dessert, our table of five ordered all five options to share. The standout for me was the pistachio cheesecake -- creamy, balanced, and beautifully presented. I paired it with a decaf Americano that was smooth and satisfying. After dinner, we went upstairs to the bar, which was lively and had an equally beautiful atmosphere. There's both indoor and outdoor seating, and while we didn't stay for drinks, I'd love to return to enjoy cocktails there next time. Valet parking is available for just $11 -- very reasonable, especially since there's also street parking nearby. You can text the valet when you're ready to leave, and they'll have your car waiting. Overall, the experience was fantastic from start to finish. Great ambience, attentive service, and a fair price point for a three-course dinner. I would absolutely come back -- next time for both dinner and drinks upstairs. 4.5 Stars.

Yelp
Top-level food experience. Pre-fixed menu. Everything was delicious. Great atmosphere and top level service. We had an amazing time.

Yelp
Folia Kitchen & Bar in Healdsburg has a beautiful modern ambiance and a very nice atmosphere. The food overall was great, though I have to admit seeing a chicken foot on the roasted chicken was a bit of a turn-off for me personally. The drinks and desserts were delicious and definitely worth trying. The service was absolutely top notch, and the resort grounds are stunning, which really adds to the overall experience. A solid spot for dining in Healdsburg!

Yelp
Just visited the restaurant in their first open weekend to the public. The food has needs some work - especially for the price - but the setting and service were excellent! Haven't tried the bar for dinner but based on my initial assessment I think the bar is going to be the better deal and where I will likely dine again in the future. I'm rooting for this restaurant to succeed!

Yelp
Stunning venue. The setting is nothing short of a work of art. As the staff mentioned, from the moment you walk in, you're enveloped into the restaurant, rather than down some dark corridor with bathrooms on the side and leading to a maitre'd table....blah-blah. Nope, you can't help but be blown away by the spectacle that is Folia. I am reluctant to really say anything negative or discouraging about the food. I would have loved to have been bowled over, but I was not, and neither was my celebrity friend, who, knows cuisine. I absolutely loved loved-loved the bread bowl. I wish I could have loved the cioppino. I wish I could have loved the $200 steak. I wish I could have loved the greens. The staff was the best I've ever experienced anywhere, and I loved them all, including our sommelier. I really had a great time and I will definitely come back!

Yelp
My first time at Folia. This place is an architecural jewel, extreme attention to detail, a new standard for wine country chic. The staff is well trained, attentive but not overpowering. Now for the food. After my wife's mocktail was delivered she was informed that the drink contained alcohol and needed to be exchanged. My beer came in a glass with salted rim, not what I expected. My first course consisted of Manilla clam pasta. It was heavy on the pancetta and light on the clams. The dish was swimming in fat. I had trout for the main course, the fish was cooked to perfection. It consisted of a piece of fish and a few strands of puntarelle, nothing else. Unfortunately, the heavy buttery sauce masked trout's delicate natural flavor. I will go back, but this time for drinks and to enjoy the ambiance.

Yelp
Food never disappoints, homemade pasta is amazing unfortunately too amazing as I can never get a photo of it before someone digs in. Chef is doing an amazing job. Love the mid century modern vibe with beautiful lush gardens makes the ambiance add to an amazing meal.

Anna E.

Yelp
Very disappointing, unfortunately. Made reservations for lunch 1 wk in advance. Upon arrival, was seated side by side @ empty community table! Asked to sit at a table....when seated, server was quite rude. Food choice was limited, menu not explained; salmon was very bland & expensive. As a local, & Charlie Palmer fan, this restaurant needs correctives if it wants to compete in Hbg!

Yelp
We had SUCH a wonderful first dining experience at Folia this past weekend! Staff were all professional, attentive and friendly. We were warmly greeted at the main door and it was truly fabulous the entire evening! Great menu and the food was superb for all our courses and selections. Beautiful presentation too! We were seated outside and the heaters were great. Fabulous ambiance both inside and outside. Both options are wonderful. Our server Christina could not have been better in any way. She made the evening perfect in every way. We would definitely ask for her again another trip up to Sonoma. It's a relatively new restaurant but already a "have to dine at" for us when we are up in Healdsburg again in the new year. It's really that good! We were so happy with every part of the dinner. We also love Dry Creek Kitchen, another of Charlie Palmer's fabulous creations, also in Healdsburg. Highly recommend.

Nicole M.

Yelp
From the greeting to the dessert everything was amazing! Christina took care of us and made sure every need was met and was so very personable. The food absolutely delicious and the choices were abundant! The atmosphere was excellent as well!

Eoin M.

Yelp
The food, service and atmosphere were all spectacular! Our server, Christina, was super knowledgeable and friendly. Every dish we had was fantastic!

Mercedes C.

Yelp
The ambiance is the only reason to go here. Food was boring and overcooked, service disappointing, very overpriced for what you get. Local people trying to support local businesses but not worth the money!

Yelp
Overall very good. We had the $85 price fix menu. We selected the chicory salad, the clam fusilli pasta, the cioppino, steak (flat iron?), dark chocolate dessert, and pistachio cheesecake. The salad was very nice although slightly overdressed for my taste. We had bar seats so I watched the chef make the salad and loved the attention to detail. He shaved the cheese in between layers of lettuce. The salad and dressing had great flavor and crisp. The pear was perfectly ripe and sweet. The pasta may have been the standout. The house made pasta with as perfectly chewy and al dente. The brown butter? was likewise perfectly executed. That was delicious. The steak was the perfect temperature throughout and the flavor was great. The cioppino was a little lacking. The flavor was just ok. My wife thought it was overwhelming fennel and there was no black cod in sight (it might have actually been an oversight/missing). The desserts were both also very good but the cheesecake was the winner. Great flavor (subtle) and combo with raspberry and whip cream. Overall, very good.

Yelp
really bad food, the guys were told they could only order their burger 2 ways instead of a more normal aspect or rare, med rare, etc. poor service to the point where they made it a big deal to change our reservation timw yet the place was half empty. very limited bar menu with not alot of healthy California options. limited seating outside. we are all locals and will not return.

Eric H.

Yelp
We were excited to try this new restaurant. We arrived early to have a drink up in the bar. We wanted to let the host know we were there, but there was no one at the host stand and there was a line of several people waiting for someone. We took the elevator to the top, and no signage to show you where the bar was. We found it and had great drinks with an amazing view. The 'perfect' martini was delicious! Our server Saige was super friendly and was great. Down in the restaurant we sat outside with a great view. We looked at the menus and so many items that were on the restaurant's website were not there. We asked and were told that they only serve the 'lounge' menu Mondays and Tuesdays! Nowhere on the site or on the app did it say that. It would have been a good thing to know, as we would have chosen another night to come. I would recommend that someone in charge do something to publicize that only a few limited items are available those nights. I ended up having the burger, very simple but tasty. My wife had the chicken that comes with the foot, which is sort of strange. It was pretty flavorful but again very simple. One of us had the pasta and he liked it. My overall impression is that for a high-end restaurant, I would have expected more options and better dishes. I may try it again but never on a Monday or Tuesday!

Yelp
Charlie Palmer does amazing work at all of his places. However this one needs to get some kinks out. Food was good, wine list good. We had the pre fixe $85 for three course option. The Creste de gallo Pomodoro appeteizer was incredible. We upgraded to the 28 oz bone-in New York strip for two and it was a bit chewy and gamey - only had half of it - was never asked how it was or why we did not finish it. However the real fail was the super snobby attitude of the hostesses. It was actually shocking - and that will be the reason we most likely won't return for a while. Service was just ok - never asked if we wanted more to drink, never cleaned the table or cleared the dishes. The ambiance and decor is great, the lighting fantastic, the noise level just perfect. Valet is $11 (Montage across the street is free valet). Beware you have assigned seating - no matter where you are even at the bar, out on the many outdoor seats and not allowed to move even an inch - even with plenty of open vacant seats. Was told our party of 2 could only sit at the counter since they do not have tables for 2 however by the end of our meal most of the 4 tops only had 2 people at it. It is too bad since Charlie is a great guy but the front of the house staff has an elitist snobby attitude.
