Hot San Diego Restaurant Openings You May Have Missed, August 2025 | Eater San Diego

"On the main drag in Barrio Logan, a new 2,500-square-foot restaurant from City Tacos and Tour de Tapas founder Gerry Torres, Fonda Del Barrio showcases ancestral Mexican cuisine with dishes like Oaxacan mole, Mayan achiote rubs, huarache, pescado a la veracruzana, and Yucatan-style octopus. Most of the wallet-friendly menu is structured as “comida corrida,” a working-person’s three-course meal that includes a small soup or salad, entrée, and dessert. All beers and wines hail from Mexico, and the only coffee served is café de olla. Outfitted with Mexican antiques, the 90-seat space includes a dining area and patio on one side and a separate bar and lounge in the adjacent area." - Helen I. Hwang

While visiting from Arizona for Thanksgiving, my family and I stumbled upon Fonda Del Barrio on our way to another nearby restaurant—and we are so glad we did. The warm, vibrant décor and the incredible aromas drifting from the kitchen instantly drew us in. A quick search confirmed they offered both seafood and margaritas, and our plans changed on the spot. We were greeted promptly and seated at a spacious table perfect for our group. Our server took our drink orders right away. Two of our children ordered lemonade, which was freshly prepared for them, while the others enjoyed ice-cold Coca-Cola served in classic glass bottles. My husband and I opted for the Mezcalita; which is currently a mezcal and pomegranate margarita, but we had it with Grand Marnier on the side, and it paired beautifully with our meal. For dessert, we treated ourselves to their unique spin on an Espresso Martini—enhanced with cinnamon—and it was truly one of the best I’ve ever tasted. We ended the evening with an Old Fashioned crafted with a blend of bourbon and mezcal, a surprisingly harmonious combination that was exceptionally delicious. Fonda Del Barrio turned out to be an unexpected and memorable highlight of our trip, and we left already talking about our next visit. The service was exceptional, and we look forward to trying new dishes the next time we come back.

Had a wonderful lunch/brunch today. They have a special brunch menu til 130 or 2 on weekends. We wanted to try one of their specialties on the main menu (Chile en nogada) but it is not available until dinner which starts at 4. We had amazing mole chilaquiles with carnitas (we ended up getting a second order with birria after tasting the first batch). We liked the carnita version more. Best chilaquiles and mole I've ever had...loved them as they were not drowning in sauce and thus were crunchy and fresh chips. Also had deep fried tamale served on a bed of yummy black beans. I'd never had one before...it was so good (albeit small portion) Also had guacamole which was OK...needed salt (and lime and onion would have boosted it even more). Service by Fabio was excellent all around. Prices were quite reasonable and atmosphere was nice. Was told they have music after 7 on W thru Sunday. We will definitely go back!!!

Google
Fonda Del Barrio has delicious, authentic food with rich flavors and generous portions. Everything tasted fresh and well-seasoned. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and the service was quick. Prices are fair for the quality and amount of food you get. I'd definitely recommend it and would come back again.

Google
All I can say is GO!! The food, drinks, atmosphere, service, live Latin music (Thu-Sat, sometimes Wed and Sun) are all ON POINT. Rudy, Luis, and Favio gave us the absolute best service. My friends and I got several drinks, appetizers, entrees, and desserts tonight and were WOWed by them all. I personally loved the mezcalita, guacamole, huarache, flan de elote, and frutas borrachas most. Yum! One suggestion for Fonda: please add a tasty plant-based entree. There is so much delicious pre Colombian cuisine that has existed prior to the beef, pork, dairy, etc. that came after Spanish colonization. Indigenous villages in Mexico have some amazingly tasty ancestral recipes, including many that are meat and dairy free 😋

Google
¡Todo fue TAN increíble!!! Literally a taste of my childhood! The Aguachile and the Pescado was just so amazing, we didn’t have one dish that wasn’t amazing! Todos los empleados son tan lindos y cariñosos también! We will definitely be returning, the atmosphere is beautiful!!

Google
Exceptional Mexican place with interesting dishes and stellar service. Salmon appetizer was delicious, as were the fish nuggets. Black beans side was spicy and a generous helping. And the outdoor seating was cushioned, so I’ll definitely be back.

Google
Loved our dinner there celebrating my mommas birthday. The staff were so sweet and welcomed us and explained the menu so well and the food DELICIOUS! Everything was so fresh. This is true authentic Mexican food. Fresh ingredients. You can probably tell by the pictures how carefully crafted the food is. We loved the ambiance. We had the guacamole, mango Habanero aguachile, enfrijoladas, guarache de Camarón, and flan.

Google
Tried Fonda Del Barrio for the first time and the food was excellent. The Pollo en Mole de Guayaba was outstanding – rich, flavorful, and truly memorable. The Chile Relleno de Fideo Seco was also tasty and unique, definitely something I’d order again. The only hiccup was the timing of service — we didn’t get drinks or even water until after finishing our first appetizer, and our second appetizer arrived alongside the main course. That said, the staff was friendly, and with food this good, I’m confident they’ll smooth out those small service issues as they settle in. Excited to come back and try more dishes!

Yelp
Thursday night music is AMAZING!!! We came to hear Antonio Fe play guitar. We were blown away by both the music and the food. I had the chicken mole de guayaba... and it was the best mole I've ever had. Seriously! ...Until I tried the puerco manchamanteles (red pork mole) and now I'm not sure which is better. Both were outstanding. The chicken mole was rich and had deep layers of flavor. The pork mole was tender and had well developed, bright flavors. Everything we had - from the aguachile, to crispy fried fish to authentic black beans - was delicious. We'll be going back for sure, not just for the food, but for the music too. Antonio Fe is extremely talented and his sound uplifts this wonderful neighborhood restaurant.

Yelp
Our group ordered a variety of dishes, and every single one was absolutely incredible. The flavors were authentic, comforting, and clearly made with love and care -- you can truly taste the passion in every bite. It felt like a trip back to our childhood days, when food was made from the heart and shared with warmth. It's rare to find that kind of authenticity and quality anymore. The customer service was just as impressive -- friendly, welcoming, and attentive from start to finish. We felt like family the moment we walked in. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the staff went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. This place is a true hidden gem. If you're craving real, home-style cooking with incredible flavors and genuine hospitality, this is the spot. We can't wait to come back and try more! Drinks, food, hospitality 11/10

Yelp
Heard of this place from friends. 6 of us decided to try it out. Nicely decorated with a bar on one side and small restaurant on the other. Friendly staff greeted us as we walked in. Seated next to the front with roll up windows open. The menu was unique and had several entree items that piqued my interest. I tried the Pollo w a Guava Mole. Others tried the Filet, the Skirt Steak and Rockfish. We started w Guacamole and chips/salsa. The guac was very unique and flavorful. Not the normal guac. Much better!!! The chips and salsa were different than normal mexican restaurants. 3 different salsa each very good. The tortilla chips were unique with different colored and flavored fresh made tortilla chip. My Guava mole was delicious but the chicken was overcooked. Nevertheless this was a well thought out dish but not perfectly cooked. The Skirt Steak was perfectly cooked but had zero seasoning!!! This shouldnt happen. But with some salsa, guac and fresh corn tortillas is was good. The black beans were delicious!!!! The Filet was stuffed with a cheese and was seasoned and delicious! The star in my opinion was the Rockfish. Cooked to perfection and had depth of flavors. I seek out and support small family run restaurants. This restaurant has been open for less than 2 months. I encourage anyone to try this very different Mexican (Mexico City) food restaurant. I look forward to returning and trying the Pulpo/octopus!!

Yelp
The owner of City Tacos has taken this Barrio Logan structure that used to house a hot dog vendor and converted it into a full-service restaurant featuring cuisine from various Mexican regions. Fonda del Barrio had its soft opening at the end of August and a full grand opening a month later. The Pueblo-style suite had a dining room to the left of the hostess stand, a bar/lounge area to the right of the hostess stand, and outdoor front patio seating. It's hard to imagine how the previous business was able to use this space with its limited menu. I sat at the bar which had eight spots. There was a small area across from the bar where a musician could set up and play live music which happened during my soft opening visit. A two-page menu featured starters, sides, soups, and salads on one side. The other side listed the entrees and desserts. The entrees had a smaller serving size which was reflected in the prices. Only two of the ten choices were above $20. My meal consisted of the Pulpo Sarandeado and the Pescado Tikin Xic. The first entree was fresh herb grilled octopus over asadero cheese and seasoned potatoes. In terms of presentation, the octopus was beautifully plated. Unfortunately, the tentacle was chewy and could have used more cooking time. The second entree was Yucatan-style fresh rockfish filet marinated in a duo of annatto seed achiote rubs. The fish was then wrapped and baked in banana leaves. I liked the addition of pickled red onions to this dish which provided acidity. The bartender that served me was knowledgeable and efficient. He was able to address my menu questions without having to consult other staff members. Parking was all curbside along Logan Ave or the nearby side streets. Overall, I had a positive dining experience at Fonda del Barrio.

Yelp
I was invited to the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony. I happened to be nearby so I decided to attend. I'm glad I did. It's such a beautiful, warm inviting space. The live music filled the bar area as it filled with people there for the celebration. Even the local news was there. First, I tried the octopus ceviche which was delicious and had a nice kick due to Serano chilis. Next, I tried a taste of the tortilla soup. It was also very good and had a smoky flavor to it. Finally I tried a small sample of the flan which was the perfect bite, not too sweet. I ordered a Mezcalita at the recommendation of the bartender. It was very good and had fresh passionfruit on top. The bartenders were swamped, but maintained their composure well. I also tried a watermelon margarita that was refreshing too. I had a reservation for after the ribbon-cutting ceremony so I moved to the restaurant. It has the same warm welcoming feeling as the bar does. I looked at the menu, which seemed reasonably priced. I decided on the huarache de camaron y nopales en salsa de gaujillo. It had so much flavor and was very filling. The servers were very attentive and knowledgeable. My water was kept filled, they made sure to check in regularly and my bill came quickly when asked. They also have outdoor seating which is lovely, but it was a bit hot to sit outside on the day I was there. All in all a lovely experience. I would love to return at night because I bet the restaurant looks and feels even more beautiful with colors, decor and lighting.

Yelp
Dined here on a weekday night, service was good and ambiance was perfect. Not too loud and music was perfect for the place. Drinks were very decently priced but a tad too strong. Some food was lacking flavor like the tiradito but the octopus was very good!

Yelp
Everything! Fabulous food, great service. Very reasonably priced. Steak was out of this world. Chicken mole delicious.

Yelp
This place is hidden in the Logan Neighborhood of SD. The decor is simple, yet brought back memories of my grandmothers house, authentic Mexican style loved it. Right off the back the main entrance door is old, antique style, true work of art. We were welcome in right from the start. What drove us here was their selection of Valle De Guadalupe wine options. Yet we found so much more. Great music, great service, great prices and a welcoming atmosphere. The server even offered us a tasting of the white wine options, it speaks greatly that he took the time to do that. We started with a glass of Chardonnay from Valle, high minerality, bright and hints of melolatic fermentation. Paired with a salmon tiradito, we loved it, we did ask for some lemon as we felt a little acidity would really make this dish round. It was perfect. The next dish was the "Pulpo Sarandeado," the first bite I thought it needed a bit of salt, but then you try all bit of all flavors in that dish, the onions, the potatoes with a layer of cheese the octopus and it's a perfect balance of flavor. This was paired with a Sangiovese Grosso and a Cab/ Merlot blend from Valle. To finish things off I had a Mezacal Paloma, fresh, not overly sweet, Smokey mezcal flavors, and refreshing. This place is a hidden gem. Rudy our server took great care of us. Will definitely be back, for what we hear they even have live music definitely a plus.

Yelp
Azusa was her first day she was so good even she may not know she found out love her !! Restaurant was super cute. I loved it that they had music we dance . I'm gonna say all the drinks were absolutely delicious. We order margarita sent it back because it was little to bitter it was replaced very quickly with a tequila and seltzer. I had the most delicious drink which was the Perita sweet and delish the steak was made absolutely perfect the soups we tried 2 chicken tortillas soup too much tortillas ,seafood soup was amazing. my friend had the octopus which is tender but lack flavor in the potato I don't think I would order that again . Overall great experience service was great band was excellent

Yelp
We met here for our book club meeting. We came around 4:30pm and parked on the street. We were greeted and offered two options for seating which was nice. We ordered drinks and guacamole which were delicious. Cocktails are $10+ which is affordable. Plates were $14+. I ordered the Arrachera plate and it was good. The mole on the side was good, i usually do not like mole. We all ate our meals and heard no complaints but more "I would come here again" when we were leaving it was getting busy and live music was starting. We were saying next time to come around 5:30pm. We walked around the area for a bit and when we walked past again before leaving it was busy and the music was good! Definitely will return

Yelp
Overall a great brunch spot. We ordered the Chilaquiles crema chipotle with birria and French toast. Chilaquiles were crunchy and covered in sauce so good. The atmosphere was warm and cozy. Service was great, friendly and attentive.

Yelp
Cheers to new beginnings we are happy to share our lovely experience here at Fonda Del Barrio. Rudy took care of us the entire night. He gave all great recommendations and was very accommodating every step of the way. We went on a rainy evening and it was so romantic. Candles were lit everywhere and live music from the bar steamed throughout the restaurant. We enjoyed a lot of the menu, and I can honestly say that every dish and every bite was authentic, fresh and clean. I really enjoyed the chile de Nogales and the filet. The filet was paired by a squash blossom purée. The chile mole was another favorite. Honestly you can't go wrong with anything you order. Our cocktails were outstanding. We will be back and next time we will enjoy the bar area .

Yelp
Owner Gerry Torres has created a beautiful Hacienda-style interior, with incredible attention to detail throughout his establishment. When I entered the restaurant, I was warmly greeted by Gerry. He is very friendly and engaging. My server, Elias was outstanding. He gave me a thorough description of all entries on the menu. Started with their classic margarita. Opted for a light meal which consisted of guacamole con Totopos and Frijoles de Olla. Both were scrumptious. My dining experience was outstanding.

Yelp
We had a delicious dinner with our family here. The ambience was warm and inviting, hacienda style. They had live music playing in the background. The service was friendly and the food was amazing. We started with guacamole and chips that had a unique flavor with jalapeños, cilantro, and radish. I had the grilled octopus and my husband had strip steak. The flavors were complex and interesting and the portions were good. The prices were very reasonable. This is our new go to spot in the barrio.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow... what an experience! The moment you walk up to this hacienda-style house, you're already transported--those massive wooden doors alone are worth stopping to admire. Inside, the old furniture and rustic charm make you feel like you've been welcomed into someone's home. The food? Absolutely incredible. You wont find tacos here, you will find true ancestral Mexican recipes, full of depth and history. We tried the showstopper chicken mole and the chile en Nogada. The owners of City Tacos have brought us a real treat here. It's not just dinner--it's a journey into Mexico's past, served with warmth and soul. I'll definitely be coming back. The service is excellent and the cocktails to die for.

Yelp
Well! Get to this restaurant now ! It's been open almost 6 weeks - frickin amazing ! It was a quiet rainy Monday night this week , maybe 4 tables but seriously , I am still talking , sharing all that I know about this delightful space ! Party of 3 started with very creative cocktails of rum and tequila - yummy and priced so reasonably. But the food - we had the Guacamole con Totopos and the Mango Harbenero Aquicjile ( shrimp crisp with elote - not my favorite but my friends loved it ) For entrees - wait for it .... Filet de Res Pofirio ( filet Mignon stuffed with 2 cheeses over roasted vegetables), Areachera a la Tampiquena with delish rice and beans and finally the Chile en Nojada ( a giant chile with ground beef , raisins , walnuts and delish cream sauce and pomegranate seeds !) our server was Fabio - so nice , did a great job explaining the menu and then he dropped an Flan de Elote as a thank you for driving g an hour to get there ! Y'all will not be disappointed! It's not your tacos / burritos place , this is a very nice dinner experience. There were no children , but plenty of space , great bar , nice ambiance! Cheers !

Yelp
This place has such a warmth to it the moment you walk in, everyone is incredibly welcoming. My husband and I came in to explore and taste a variety of Valle de Guadalupe wines. Our server was so helpful, even offering us a few tastings since Valle de Guadalupe doesn't follow the same strict wine laws as other regions. We ended up discovering the Fondo Chardonnay, which became a favorite for both of us. For food, we tried the salmon tiradito it did not disappoint. So full of flavor and beautifully presented. The space itself is charming and cozy, reminding me of my grandmother's living room. It has a comforting, homey feel that makes you want to linger just a little longer.

Yelp
What a welcome addition to San Diego! Here's why... The Ambiance: So warm, welcoming and charming. With an authentic rustic/traditional Mexican pueblo feel, it's also at once quite elegant and sophisticated, given the finesse and etiquette of the waitstaff. The service: Although an individual waiter is assigned to each table, it's clear that it's a team effort to ensure that every diner is made to feel appreciated. The servers, busboys, manager and owner all pass by with smiles and inquiries as to how your dining experience is going. Starting with the lovely young hostess Paulina, to the powers that be-- Rudy, and Gerry, the mission here is to make you feel that "Eres como familia." The food: The bar has been raised for Mexican food in San Diego-- and I daresay even in Tijuana. Hallelujah! I haven't had food in our area even remotely close to what I have had in my time living and traveling throughout Mexico-- until now. Por fin! During my 3 visits there, I had the crabmeat and flounder ceviche on tomato corn squares, guava mole with chicken, tortilla soup with miniature Mexican cheese cubes, and grilled pulpo-- all outstanding renditions. Bravo y gracias! Hasta la próxima!

Yelp
My husband and I recently visited [Restaurant Name], and it was an absolutely fantastic experience from start to finish! The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with a great balance of comfort and style. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made us feel genuinely welcome. We ordered the Tiradito de Salmon (appetizer) , Chile en Nogada, Pulpo Sarandeado, and for dessert Frutas Borrachas. My Chile en Nogada was pretty tasty, the meat was well seasoned and the walnut cream sauce had a nice consistency and flavor. My husband's Pulpo Sarandeado was delicious. The portion of the octopus was perfect and the potatoes had a nice kick to them. My husband enjoyed a drink (forgot the name) that had mezcal and bourbon. Looking forward to our next visit to Fonda Del Barrio.

Bri B.

Yelp
What can I say this place was charming from the get go. The ambience is tastefully done and in the evening for dinner looks great. Definitely a place for a date night out. Service is excellent and the staff are very accommodating. We had the Chile en Nogada. My was it good! The presentation is excellent with flavor to match. Filled with ground beef and covered in a delicious creamy sauce. Its only downside is that it's a small dish. Nothing dessert can't fill lol. Other dish we tried was the Pollo en Mole Guayaba. Another tasty dish. The mole is a little on the sweet side but not overpowering as some can be. Chicken was cooked perfectly and the rice was also good. Finally was the dessert. Tried the Flan de Elote. Presentation is very nice. Light corn flavor and very delicious. This was our first time here and we will definitely be returning here to try the other items on the menu. *As a side note: please don't let the location keep you from visiting this wonderful place. Give it a try and I'm certain you will enjoy the food and music. And yes they do live music and it's awesome!
google avatar

Yelp
We had an amazing experience here! Must tries are the Arrachera a la Tampiquena and the Pollo en Mole de Guayaba. The cocktails are also very good. Miguel and Fabio took great care of us! Do your self a favor come here!

Yelp
The food was excellent and represented Mexican regional cuisine at its finest. The service was excellent even though our waiter was a bit nervous. The restaurant has a great vibe; lively, upbeat, and they don't rush you to finish. Well done

Yelp
We were really looking forward to trying Fonda Del Barrio, but unfortunately our visit was extremely disappointing. One of our dishes was served with raw pork -- not undercooked, but actually raw inside. We only realized after taking a few bites, and since then we've both felt a little sick. The staff did apologize, but overall the experience felt unforgiving and careless. Mistakes happen, but serving raw pork is a serious food safety issue. Even with the apology, there wasn't much effort to make things right or ensure we left feeling taken care of. I rarely leave negative reviews, but in this case I feel it's important to share -- hopefully they take this seriously and make improvements, because no guest should have to go through that.
google avatar

Jasmine R.

Yelp
I was a tad nervous since this place just opened and pretty few reviews (which are normally biased friends and family) however, I was blown away. 10/10 for food, cocktails, ambiance, staff and pricing. Everything we had was exceptional. I don't tend to like mole but every dish I tried with mole here was soo good. This is authentic Mexican. It is an experience in itself. I am so thankful when I find restaurants that have superior food at a decent price. I will be back here and I will tell all my friends they must try it. I circled everything we had on the menu and I 100% recommend every dish. Thank you so much for such an amazing dinner.

Yelp
Amazing service (thank you, Rudy), beautiful ambiance and the food! The food was absolutely incredible where you can tell it was made with love. I think their house specialty "dedos de pescado" which is a delicate fish fritter with two very different dipping sauces. We had the pork mole, chile relleno and guacamole-all excellent. Please check it out! I promise you will love it.

Yelp
The ambience is wonderful! The service is amazing! The food is the BEST Mexican food place in San Diego! The Arrachera Tampiqueńa plate was sooooooo GOOD! The meat was like butter lots of flavor and amazing beans and guacamole! Rudy was super attentive and we felt at HOME! They had GREAT live music and the cocktails are to die for! Favorite place for a great Mexican Food meal.

Yelp
We visited this establishment last night for their official opening and let me tell you from the moment you walk in you get greeted with smiles. We tried Mango Habanero Aguachile and Arrachera a la Tampiquena and its was made perfect! Steak was tender and juice. Can't wait to go back try their old fashioned!

Yelp
TL:DR Go here!! The food and drinks are amazing, the ambiance is great, and the service is quick, prompt, and very friendly! They handled my partners gluten allergy to a tee. Their patio is dog friendly which is a huge plus for my partner and our Shiba. My partner and I had made plans to check out Fonda del Barrio without knowing if they had a patio and allowed dogs on it. Right before our reservation we called and asked if they could accommodate our fur baby and they very delightfully assured us that she could join us for dinner. Great news! We had been wanting to check out the food scene in Barrio Logan for some time and having dinner here makes us want to come back not only to Fonda but try the other eateries as well. Barrio Logan is a very bright and lively backdrop for the entire restaurant locale. The Drinks I had the watermelon mint margarita which was delicious! My cup was rimmed with Tajin and it had muddled watermelon, mint, and a tiny slice of watermelon inside. We also tried the strawberry margarita which I liked more! It had a Tajin/chamoy covered straw. It was very strawberry forward and it was very refreshing. The Food - Starters Salpicon de Jaiba - "The perfect bite" I wanted more. Next time we know to each order our own plate of this crab and flounder ceviche. Salsa con Totopos- Not your average chips and salsa! The house made tortilla chips are made of various ingredients and you can tell they're fresh! The green chips actually taste like spinach, the red chips had a nice tomatoey taste (it might not have been tomato, but it was good!) The flight of salsas that accompanied them were also great! I'm not a fan of spicy heat for the sake of clearing my sinuses, these three had a nice kick while adding depth of flavor. Frijoles refrito con Veneno- Probably the best refried beans I've had in a restaurant. We hade little cubes of cotija cheese on top adorned with a chicharron which was perfect. Paired with their house made chips we cleared out the bowl. Entrees Puerco Manchamanteles- So. Much. Flavor! Their mole smothered pork loin was very tender and moist. The mole is very vibrant and paired well with refried beans. Filete de Res Porfirio- Order this. If not you someone in your party. You need to try this. The panela and cotija cheese oozes out of the perfectly cooked filet mignon. This is served with a whole head of roasted garlic that was spreadable on top of the filet. I love garlic and this was heavenly. The vegetables and creamy squash blossom reduction is paired perfectly with the protein and dairy. We really wanted to try their Frutas Borrachas but we were left feeling graciously satiated without feeling stuffed. The ambiance is great. The host and maybe the owner came by a few times to relight our tables candle that has gone out. They also had live music that fit the vibe. Every staff member was warm and inviting. Our server Arturo was great and we'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Came here with a friend who is a local. Truly authentic, but definitely not ordinary. Everything was delicious! I had the Horchata Martini and we shared the Chili Nogada and Pollo an Mole Guava. Service was friendly, helpful, and prompt.

Yelp
Bright attentive staff. Amazing food. Great menu to choose from. Favorite new restaurant.

Yelp
The food here is delectable, and service is attentive and thoughtful with recommendations. Classic margaritas are perfectly balanced, not too tart or too sweet. Both the pulpo and the filet mignon were cooked perfectly and exploding with the most delicious combinations of ingredients. And, the dessert with the sweet potato mousse and chocolate mole was delicious but not overly sweet. Plus, the prices are very reasonable for the fine food and plentiful portions. A fine dining experience, for sure!

Yelp
Fantastic food! So many layers of flavors in there beautifully displayed dishes. Great customer service and the owner was so delightful to speak with. The drinks were over the top! The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere and decorated with Latin flair. Must go! FIVE STARS!!

Yelp
This was a memorable evening. The service was excellent and the food was outstanding! Some highlights include pescado tikin Xico (wow!), chile en nogada (wonderfully flavorful), ensalada tricolor (a little spicy and super yummy), and of course guacamole con totopos (some of the best guacamole I've had). Can't wait to go again and introduce this special place to my friends!

Yelp
What a pleasure to find this restaurant. This is real Mexican food - nothing like what you find in taco shops in San Diego. Great mole(s). Even the different colored chips have different flavors, and it's not just food coloring. Very reasonably priced. It can be loud thanks to live music, so consider sitting outside if you want more quiet

Yelp
Food was delicious, service very attentive and a great ambiance that felt like we were not in SD.

Yelp
Great food but terrible service. Went first week of opening and we had a really bad experience. Waiter seemed like he did not wanted to be there at all. Weather was 84 degrees outside, brought us room temp water, asked for ice and never brought it. Started rushing us to order food before getting everyone's drink orders. I asked for a coke with ice since he seemed to forget about the ice and he brought me a glass bottle of coke, no cup, no ice. Had to ask again for a cup of ice AND iced water. Then he forgot one of our main dishes, it wasnt until everyone was almost done eating and we asked another staff to check how much longer for that dish and they realized it was not put in. Owner did came to apologize and tried to fix the situation but waiter never once came to apologize nor to check on us to see if we were missing anything. Most dishes were really good, some could use more flavor.

Yelp
I selected Fonda Del Barrio for dinner. Upon entering the restaurant you feel like entering a Mexican guesthouse, nice ambiance. We were warmly greeted throughout our dining fro the hostess, server and owner. We started with an appetizer of guacamole and totopos (chips). There were different colored chips each carrying a unique flavor and the guacamole was not overly blended which had some chunks of avocado the way I like. The entrees were Chile Nogada (a fire grilled poblano pepper filled with ground beef, raisins, walnuts and a whole array of herbs and spices finished in a warm walnut cream sauce accentuated with pomegranate seeds, which is difficult to find, traditionally served during Mexican Independence Day because of the green chile, white sauce, and pomegranates resembles the colors of the Mexican flag) Arrachera Tampic (Traditional grilled skirt steak, poblano peppers and spring onions served with refried beans & enmoladas (mini mole enchiladas) and an order of homemade corn tortillas. The presentation of meal was well prepared, the seasoning was well balanced, and the meals were flavorful. We left our plates clean and I noticed other patrons doing like wise. We finished our meal with dessert Frutas Borrachas (Seasonal fruits flambeed with tequila finished with a French vanilla ice cream scoop and a sprinkle of Palanqueta a traditional Aztec candy made of seeds and nuts). There beverage s were water, Pacific, and Cafe de Olla. Our server Fabio checked on us through our meal and ensuring if our needs were being met and meal was satisfying. The owner Jerry also asked for our opinion of the meal. I understand this review may be lengthy just wanted to provide an in depth of what you may expect. I encourage you to try Fonda Del Barrio and experience authentic Mexican cuisine.

Yelp
Anxious to try this new restaurant. Visited last night with another couple. Great experience start to finish. Staff was very accommodating with table selection and continued to excel. Waiter, Rudy was great. Knowledgeable, attentive and friendly. Food was excellent. Starters were tasty and perfect size for sharing. Prices were surprisingly reasonable for San Diego.

Yelp
What a find! Delicious well prepared food at a reasonable price. The interior is beautiful and spotlessly clean. The service attentive but not overbearing. You can tell the whole staff cares deeply about the whole experience. Definitely will be a regular customer at Fonda Del Barrio.

Yelp
We went on Friday and we were really pleased of the service and the quality of the food. The menu is very limited with very little vegetarian options. When we tried to make some changes to any of the menu items they told us that it was not possible. Many of the menu items have pork or lard. The decor is beautiful. You really feel the ambiance of a Fonda!!
