Hot San Diego Restaurant Openings You May Have Missed, August 2025 | Eater San Diego

"On the main drag in Barrio Logan, a new 2,500-square-foot restaurant from City Tacos and Tour de Tapas founder Gerry Torres, Fonda Del Barrio showcases ancestral Mexican cuisine with dishes like Oaxacan mole, Mayan achiote rubs, huarache, pescado a la veracruzana, and Yucatan-style octopus. Most of the wallet-friendly menu is structured as “comida corrida,” a working-person’s three-course meal that includes a small soup or salad, entrée, and dessert. All beers and wines hail from Mexico, and the only coffee served is café de olla. Outfitted with Mexican antiques, the 90-seat space includes a dining area and patio on one side and a separate bar and lounge in the adjacent area." - Helen I. Hwang

While visiting from Arizona for Thanksgiving, my family and I stumbled upon Fonda Del Barrio on our way to another nearby restaurant—and we are so glad we did. The warm, vibrant décor and the incredible aromas drifting from the kitchen instantly drew us in. A quick search confirmed they offered both seafood and margaritas, and our plans changed on the spot. We were greeted promptly and seated at a spacious table perfect for our group. Our server took our drink orders right away. Two of our children ordered lemonade, which was freshly prepared for them, while the others enjoyed ice-cold Coca-Cola served in classic glass bottles. My husband and I opted for the Mezcalita; which is currently a mezcal and pomegranate margarita, but we had it with Grand Marnier on the side, and it paired beautifully with our meal. For dessert, we treated ourselves to their unique spin on an Espresso Martini—enhanced with cinnamon—and it was truly one of the best I’ve ever tasted. We ended the evening with an Old Fashioned crafted with a blend of bourbon and mezcal, a surprisingly harmonious combination that was exceptionally delicious. Fonda Del Barrio turned out to be an unexpected and memorable highlight of our trip, and we left already talking about our next visit. The service was exceptional, and we look forward to trying new dishes the next time we come back.

All I can say is GO!! The food, drinks, atmosphere, service, live Latin music (Thu-Sat, sometimes Wed and Sun) are all ON POINT. Rudy, Luis, and Favio gave us the absolute best service. My friends and I got several drinks, appetizers, entrees, and desserts tonight and were WOWed by them all. I personally loved the mezcalita, guacamole, huarache, flan de elote, and frutas borrachas most. Yum! One suggestion for Fonda: please add a tasty plant-based entree. There is so much delicious pre Colombian cuisine that has existed prior to the beef, pork, dairy, etc. that came after Spanish colonization. Indigenous villages in Mexico have some amazingly tasty ancestral recipes, including many that are meat and dairy free 😋

Exceptional Mexican place with interesting dishes and stellar service. Salmon appetizer was delicious, as were the fish nuggets. Black beans side was spicy and a generous helping. And the outdoor seating was cushioned, so I’ll definitely be back.

Loved our dinner there celebrating my mommas birthday. The staff were so sweet and welcomed us and explained the menu so well and the food DELICIOUS! Everything was so fresh. This is true authentic Mexican food. Fresh ingredients. You can probably tell by the pictures how carefully crafted the food is. We loved the ambiance. We had the guacamole, mango Habanero aguachile, enfrijoladas, guarache de Camarón, and flan.

Tried Fonda Del Barrio for the first time and the food was excellent. The Pollo en Mole de Guayaba was outstanding – rich, flavorful, and truly memorable. The Chile Relleno de Fideo Seco was also tasty and unique, definitely something I’d order again. The only hiccup was the timing of service — we didn’t get drinks or even water until after finishing our first appetizer, and our second appetizer arrived alongside the main course. That said, the staff was friendly, and with food this good, I’m confident they’ll smooth out those small service issues as they settle in. Excited to come back and try more dishes!

Place is ok at best. We ordered the Guacamole con Totopos, Frijoles refritos con Veneno, Filete de Res Porfirio, and Arrachera a la Tampiqueña. They forgot the Guacamole till the end of our meal which wasnt a problem but the chips were soggy because they are dipped in which I imagined sat on a counter for some time. The Guacamole was good and had a nice spice. This was the best part of our meal. The frijoles had no flavor and were very bland. Nothing really more to comment on. Would not order again. I usually order my steaks medium rare with pink and red but this was gooey rare with not much flavor. The rare texture made it hard to eat with the subtle flavor. The sauce was also underwhelming and did not bring out any flavor of the meat. The arrachera had more flavor and texture than the pricier filete. Which I would had prefed to order instead. Overall the price, presentation and atmosphere was good but the food missed the mark. We plan on returning and possibly updating our review.

The food is delicious. The service was better for us the second time we went. The first time, the waiter we got looked very impatient and just didn't deliver good customer service. Everything I've tasted so far I've loved. The drinks are really good too.

I stopped in for openning night and was glad I did. I had chips with 3 kinds of salsa (arbol, tatemada, and macha), a cheese stuffed filet, and 2 unquie drinks: a mezcal old fashion and a passion fruit mescalita. All of it was wonderful. The meat was perfect. The coctails balanced. The salsa each brought new flavors that disnt compete, but stood on their own. I want to return to try their take on many dishes i know, and some you can normally only get seasonally like chiles en nogada. Fonda del Barrio, the neighborhood inn, is a new creation by the owner of City Tacos. Following lead of the other restraunt they are not trying to be the same flavors as all the neighboring spots. This is something special. The cocktail menu are new creations by head bartender from Cafe Sevilla see photo. Many great options. Openning night they had a talented live acoustic guitar player. Ill be on the look out for more music there. 100% will return
