LA Times Critic Loves the Incredible Steakhouse Options at APL in HOllywood - Eater LA

"The speciality of the house is the above-mentioned machete, a long (like, over two feet) stuffed and cheesy tortilla situation that not only looks good for Instagram, it works well on the plate." - Farley Elliott

Original plates and fresh ingredients. A great spin on the typical quesadilla. They make a 29 inch Machete quesadilla, a quesadilla in the shape of a MACHETE !!! I also had a choriqueso taco. Look at the pictures, my mouth is already watering reliving the experience. The owner was also our server, and also a true liver of his food craft. Plenty of mets to choose from and traditional plates from Oaxaca. Highly recommend. Come with an appetite, big portions.

Google
Had a machete with horchata green sauce, its is massive, chicharrón yummi, very tasty, staff very friendly and very caring, food came in fair time, i would love to get there on a weekend to try barbacoa or menudo! Very clean facilities, Restaurant needs a bit of care thats why the 4 ⭐️, otherwise i would give 5, still one of my fav restaurant of Mexican food! Love the place!!

Google
Good food, as you can see food is really well served, place is not that big but it's nice and clean.

Google
I love this place. They have a small menu but very tasty. They are know as "La Casa del Machete" which is a quesadilla almost 2.5 feet long and one of their most popular menu items. Many of their other items are oversized as well so bring a large appetite or a hungry friend. On the weekends they offer barbacoa de borrego which is some of the best I've had in a while and you can order a bowl of consome to accompany your meal that includes hand made tortillas. You can chase it down with some agua fresca (horchata, hibiscus, pineapple, and tamarind) served in a Mason jar which you can take home. I highly recommend this joint if you have time to wait for a tasty meal.

Yelp
Incredibly nice and kind service and good food. The ambiance was very welcoming and there were not alot of people.

Yelp
The place is small but don't judge it. It has plenty of seating and room that you don't feel like you're stuffed inside. The person that served is was up front with us that they were having technical issues and only accepted cash or Zelle. It wasn't an issue for us and we sat because we saw videos of this place and wanted to try it out. The food took a while but everything was made by hand and made to order. It never is an issue and the food was so good! I ordered the three pork belly bites. They offered the right amount of crunch and flavors went well with each other. The suica horchata was delicious! Sweet from the horchata and strong from the coffee. My tia and tio got agua fresca de piña and that was made to order as well! I am not a fan of agua de piña but I will order it from here on my next visit! You can tell that they take pride in their cooking and service and it is a hidden gem that I hope they get more recognition for their work!

Yelp
We came here for the AYCE Tacos. They were ok, but I wouldn't do it again. At $14 total, I was able to eat 14 tacos, making each taco $1. But I didn't really think the tacos were that good. The asada was bland. The chorizo and al pastor were decent. The herb mushroom one was surprisingly better than I thought it was gonna be. And the chicken one was kinda tough. I did think the horchata was good though - it was very sweet and cinnamon-y. The service was kinda weird. The tacos take a while to come out, which I wouldn't have minded if the tacos were yummy, but they weren't yummy enough to warrant that wait. Especially for an AYCE service, that lull while you're waiting on your tacos makes you feel full. It's almost like they want you to get too full and not finish your tacos because they'll charge you $2 for each one you don't finish. One of our friends took a while to finish his tacos because he was obviously full and our server kept coming over and asking if he wanted to tap out. He came 4 times seeing if my friend was gonna give up, like chill and let him finish. Made the vibe feel a little sleazy and predatory.

Yelp
The AYCE tacos aren't that great. With so many taco places around town, this place was somewhat a disappointment. Although the waitress was nice, the food quality was average at best. And everything else is expensive... a glass of agua fresca will set you back $8, and you need to order water! The place is clean, but because it is not crowded? This is a one-and-done for me
google avatar

Yelp
Came for AYCE tacos for lunch on a Tuesday for $14. More selection with premium fillings. Nice space, easy parking.

Yelp
3-3.5 STARS On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Fuego Maiz does AYCE tacos for $13 or $18/person depending on which tier you get. The $13/person menu includes asada, pastor, chicken, chorizo, and herb mushroom tacos. And the $18/person menu includes the regular proteins plus ranchera, carnitas, garlic butter shrimp, chicken tinga, and huitlacoche. I tried the $18/person option and recommend the following proteins: chicken, chorizo, ranchera, garlic butter shrimp, and chicken tinga. The tacos run smaller so you can try most of them. You are allowed 3 rounds of orders for the AYCE menu. Service was a little slow because there was only one server taking orders and getting tacos out to all of the tables. Overall, I thought the quality was just average. It might have just been a byproduct of it being busy during AYCE Tuesdays and Thursdays. They have a lot of other options on the menu - might have to try those next time!

Yelp
Food is always good that's why we keep coming back again and again Pastor Belly Bites are excellent and highly recommended! Machetito is good for 2 people it's big and delicious

Yelp
Decided to come by after Disneyland for a late night snack. Ordered the Al pastor fries - OH MY these fries were the best fries I have ever had. The seasonings were strong and delicious. Wish it had more meat but it was so good!

Yelp
We stopped in for dinner on an all-you-can-eat Taco Tuesday and I was amazed at the quality of the food! There were ten different options and almost all of them were excellent--you can skip the Herb Mushroom option no question. I do wish they served beer (at least) and they were definitely under-staffed for an offer like this. Service was slow but that's not the staff's fault--management needs to add one more person when they schedule this offer again!

Yelp
Stopped by here because I heard about their AYCE tacos Thursday special. This local spot is located in a smaller plaza and although there isn't much parking out front, you can just avoid any busy times hopefully. The inside has about eight tables so fairly quaint but it was clean and looked up to date. I got the regular protein AYCE tacos which is $13. A mighty fine deal if you ask me. Now at this price point you may think they are skimping in quality for the quantity is endless but you would be incorrect. I got the Asada, Pollo, and Al pastor tacos for both rounds (up to 8 tacos per round). The asada was a solid 4/5, wasn't dry or tough, tasted fresh. The pollo (2/5) left a little to be desired as it was a little dry. Nothing a little salsa can't fix. Al pastor (4.5/5) was the best of the bunch: juicy, flavorful, and paired nicely with the salsa. Service was a little lackluster this night as we asked for more salsa and waited probably ten minutes. There was only one guy waiting tables and he was nice so I don't fault him for that. Heads up if you want water you have to purchase it by the bottle and they don't allow outside beverages. Overall, great price for some decent tacos. I can see myself making a repeat visit soon.

Yelp
Service and food was great. Came in during non peak hours for the AYCE tacos. There were 2 other tables with customers. Street taco style with a ton of flavor. Photo is of our round 1. Drinks come in a large mason jar (agua fresca and suiza horchata). Huitlacoche was a surprise as I've never tried it before. Will be back for more.

Yelp
If you have a craving for tacos look no more come and check out Fuego Maiz, and enjoy ACE tacos, the place has a very upbeat and casual atmosphere, and let their friendly staff wow you with this fusion Mexican cuisine, if ACE tacos are not your thing you must have the mar y Tierra (surf and turf) machete a 29" Delight filled with asada and garlic shrimp, let your taste buds go wild with the flavors of this fantastic Mexican restaurant.

Yelp
Just wanted to tell you about this amazing place we tried out recently. My brother and his family came to visit from Tucson, Arizona, and we stumbled upon Fuego Maiz. We had to give it a shot for Taco Tuesday - all you can eat tacos! the Mom pop place was very nice. Well kept, and the service was welcoming. Every single taco we had was absolutely amazing, and the drinks were great too. Can't wait to go back and indulge in more delicious food. if you're traveling to Anaheim for the holidays and with the family a must place to stop and get some good food.
google avatar

Malina W.

Yelp
AYCE taco was delicious, comes with red and green sauce. Comfortable seating with adequate parking. Bottled water is $1.50 and other paid drink options if you want beverages with your tacos.

Viana L.

Yelp
Came here with my husband since we were in the mood for tacos and heard of this buffet-style eatery. We're happy to have stopped by! The service was nice! They explained the rules of eating their all-you-can-eat tacos very well, and were accommodating to our questions. The ambience was swell, it's got music but music played low enough that my husband and I could easily talk to each other. The food was great! Very filling and at a super good price, I ate a bunch of tacos while my husband ate way more. My favorite were the chorizo, my husband's favorite were the shrimp! We will be coming back for sure!

Yelp
Went here with a bunch of friends for their AYCE tacos and it was a fantastic experience. All the options were amazing, especially the pastor. Their horchata was also delicious. Service was also very fast and friendly Music was fun too

Yelp
Avoid this place at all costs. Only giving you one start to get a $10 discount but if I could I would even rate no stars.

Yelp
The wait was long but that's to be expected for up and coming places! Although the wait was long the service was great! It was about an hour and half wait for around 6:30 on a Tuesday, so be prepared! I enjoyed the decor as well! Felt like a mix of Mexican and some more modern American style! The food itself we got the AYCE tacos! They have a regular and premium proteins with the regular! Food was amazing and the workers were super nice! I'm excited to say I will be coming back again to try the "Machete"!
google avatar

Linda L.

Yelp
The food was good here. Thankfully came at around 11ish and it wasn't too busy. But they truly are understaffed here. For AYCE you would think they had more then just 2 employees. I highly recommend coming here if you have nothing else to do afterwards because, the wait is long. Even though we were seated, it took a while for rhe waiter to get 3 table orders in and then it took another hot minute before food came out again. I think because of the long wait, I personally got full faster. Otherwise the food was delicious forthe price. I recommend going earlier then lunch time to avoid long waits for seats. But expect long waits for service. If the service wasn't so slow I'd definitely give this place 5 out of 5.

Melissa R.

Yelp
Great food Great Cafe De Olla! But over all great service!!! Will definitely be making the drive out here again!

Erik N.

Yelp
Great food and great service. I came here for the all you can eat and was not disappointed. I upgraded to the premium AYCE menu because I could not resist the Garlic Butter Shrimp tacos. So delicious. Amazing bang for your buck.

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Maria E was an amazing server. The food came out fast and tasted great! I would definitely come again!

Ashley S.

Yelp
This was my 3rd time here, honestly it's good if you go in the morning when they open bc it's not as packed and you get your food very fast. All 3 times I went before 11am. There's a handful of tables and if you come with 10 people there's only one table big enough to accommodate. So keep that in mind. It's small. The tables and chairs are nice and comfortable. They can be arranged to accommodate wheelchairs and high chairs for the kids. It's small so when you walk in, you wait right there next to the tables. The food is good. The best? Some things yes and some no. Fresca con crema French toast 10/10 AYCE Tacos Tuesday 7/10 Chips and salsa 6/10 Sucio fries 7/10 Machete quesadilla 9/10 The AYCE tacos I didn't really care for them. Most of the meat was dry and they were small street tacos even though the server scared me into ordering less bc she kept saying "we charge you $2 a taco if you don't finish every bite including the tortillas ". Maybe say something different bc it comes off rude. $3 for a small water bottle. Last time I went and got a water it was huge. Now it's a tiny water bottle. I don't think I'll go back. Especially since you can't bring in your own drinks like you can't bring in your Stanley. They do not serve alcohol or beer. Wish they did since I'm paying for water, might as well had got a beer. Price It's kinda pricey. They do not give you free water, and they don't do refills. That's my biggest thing. $6 for chips and salsa. That's kinda a lot when most restaurants it's free. The brunch menu is good priced and the machete is 29. Also decently priced.

Yelp
Saw this on instagram so thought I would give it a try. Not often you see an all you can eat taco option. Went with the $18 all you can eat taco menu. This was definitely worth it. The record is 30 tacos by one person and I could only get down 22 before tapping out. They are smaller than average street tacos but the double tortilla makes it more filling. They aren't greedy with the meat either though so you're really getting your moneys worth here. Flavor and quality is there. Meet isn't greasy or covered in oils but it isn't dry either. The tacos were made FRESH to order including the meat and came out perfect. My favorite proteins were the Garlic Butter Shrimp, Ranchera, and Al Pastor. Salsas are good. Wish they had a orange/habanero sauce as that is usually my favorite choice of salsa. Horchata was also good. Service was really good. Seemed like it was ran by one person at the time and thankfully it wasn't busy when we got there so he was able to handle everything smoothly. Orders were taken fast, food arrived quick, and being attentive to our table was never an issue. Are they the best tacos I've ever had? No, but for $13-$18 ALL YOU CAN EAT, they damn sure are worth coming back for. Great service, good food. 5/5 easily.
google avatar

Mik P.

Yelp
I saw it on Instagram and saw that it was the same place that the mixcoac used to be. From the beginning it looks good and so how is the environment? You'll know what's expensive. They don't give chips on the table so you can wait for the food. And it's okay, I don't think it's an obligation. But if it's a "MEXICAN RESTAURANT" I think that at least the chips should not be missing.
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
Awesome stuff right here! They host all you can eat tacos on Tuesdays and Thursdays now for $13 or $18 (premium meats). We got the regular meats and let me tell you, this is such a great deal! I am stuffed and also satisfied with the experiences. There's some wait on the tacos as you request the next round but I was in no rush so I could pace myself. Overall, I had 12 tacos total which is more than I usually eat but I ate enough where I was full yet not struggling to finish my plates I really enjoyed the pastor, but got to try the asada, chicken, and mushroom herbs as well. Pastor is probably my favorite out of the selection since it had flavor, the extra char is the best part. Additionally, their ayce menu comes with a free small glass of their agua frescas - which I think is enough serving for one! But you can upgrade to a 32oz for $4 instead of the og $7 price! Would I come back here? Yes! Would I bring friends here? Also yes! Would I recommend this? Heck yes!

Yelp
Awesomeness food and prices are fare come and try them out you'll come back every time

Yelp
First time, so this review is based on the all you can eat Thursday tacos. They are just okay, we tried the $13, but if that's just okay I'd not try the $18, to be honest . The chicken tasted weird, maybe expired idk. To be honest I just liked the pastor one, but we created a asada mushroom but mixing the tacos and that we liked lol. They don't have water there ... so make sure to bring your own lol, after the complimentary drink which by the way the pineapple water was delicious. You gotta buy any other drink. The server was kind to us, but don't understand why they'd leave her working alone in a such busy day. So obviously, the service was low, but it was not her fault. So please manager, get more staff to help. Think about your employees. They might have other things that are good, but this review is for the experience that we had this past Thursday.

Yelp
I loved their ayce tacos! Great price starting at 13 dollars! I loved their service and was able to get good cuts of meat per taco! Would recommend to everybody else. The environment is okay, pretty small but chill enough to eat out at

Marcela S.

Yelp
Great service and yummy chilaquiles. Their sucia horchata is bomb too! Anddd they have good reggaeton music playing which is a vibe

Alex P.

Yelp
Went on a Tuesday for their ayce deal. Portions were smaller than usual but you're allowed 15 tacos total. 5 tacos per round and 3 rounds. Meat quality was decent but nothing crazy. The herb mushroom taco was actually one of the better ones to choose from. Didn't feel good about paying 8$ for a 32 oz aguas Fresca though. Although the horchata was pretty on point.
google avatar

Tha G.

Yelp
Medium size cozy place great service and food was delicious. As a Family of 4 we ended up getting the sucio fries for an appetizer then we ordered the 29" machete with asada and pastor also you have to try the horchata sucia very delicious refreshing drink wife loved it because it tastes like coffee. Everything was delicious should definitely come and try this places for a real Machete.
google avatar

Tania L.

Yelp
The breakfast was delicious! The service was quick and everyone was nice. Loved the pancakes super soft not too sweet and eye catching. The huaraches is not really seen in breakfast spots so enjoyed that. The ranchera was juicy with crisp edges! Cute spot and clean place.
google avatar

Erica S.

Yelp
Really good food and really good service. Even the chips that come with the burrito had flavor and went perfectly with the spicy dipping sauces - my preference. A standout item here is obviously the long quesadilla, which can feed multiple people or just yourself. I did see two other guests order one each - ladies at that lol. This weekend they'll be introducing their brunch menu, which I will return to try.

Yelp
This place needs more employees and better training.. wait time is way too long just for drinks alone.. plus the server didn't have a list for the people waiting outside for a table.. nobody cleans either due to being understaffed. This location is not prepared for lunch rush at all. Cannot come back to poor service.
google avatar

Anthony L.

Yelp
This place is the fucken bomb. The service and the waiter are superb nice. Food here is 11/10 and horchata is supe delicious recommend for everyone to come here but the place is a little small. Great music by the way.

Yelp
We saw this place on Yelp and wanted to give it a try. We tried the All You can It tacos-"Regular Protein". I was extremely disappointed. The meats were dry, and the tortillas were cold. This place has many rules: "No Sharing" and "Must Eat Everything on Your Plate." My sister only ate one of the two tortillas the tacos were wrapped in and was told if she didn't eat the tortillas, we will be charged $2.00 for every tortilla not eaten. The waiteres said they have cameras watching, and she didn't want to get in trouble for not charging us. While we were here, we found out that they had a health violation. We will not be coming back. Hello "Kalavaras"
google avatar

Yelp
Service was excellent. Food was terrific. We had the AYCE tacos. Come here and help the business grow. These places need to succeed

Yelp
Never seen an all you can eat taco spot and it showed up on my IG so thought itd be fair to go try it out. Its fairly new. The owner was present and was really nice and trying to serve the various tables. They had quite a couple ppl in that night so maybe a little bit busy. Our tacos would take a bit to get to us. The order comes with a free drink but we ended up ordering more. My favorite was probably the mushroom tacos because it has more flavor than any of the meat tacos. I ended up eating 8 tacos, my bf ate about 10-12 i lost count. They do come with double tortillas so thats where they fill you up quick. For people who can eat alot this is definitely the spot to get your fill. Its pretty affordable. I know they have a brunch menu, so may possibly go try that soon
google avatar

Justin V.

Yelp
Looks good, tastes great! Ingredients are fresh, selections are plenty, and presentation is unique. Try this place and you'll love it! Ohh and great service too!

Yelp
I saw an IG posted by @Ocfoodandview and invited my hubby and brother to try it. I was not impressed with the taco Tuesday meal. I tried the AYCE "regular meat" tacos, pastor, chicken, chorizo, asada and mushrooms. The tortillas were cold and the meat (chicken, pastor, asada) were dry and over cooked. I ate one of two tortillas from the tacos and was told by the waitress that I would need to eat them or I would be charged $2 per tortilla. That there are cameras and she would get in trouble if she didn't add it to our bill. I felt uncomfortably forced to eat. Later, reading their RULES. It states you eat what you order or charged $2 for each taco left behind and no take out. Tortillas are not a taco!!! I will not be returning and will not recommend it. In addition, Yelp has noted that Fuego Maíz has had a food inspection violation. Unfortunately, I discovered this after the fact. On a positive note, no wait to be seated, the aqua Fresca Jamaica was perfect and the music was uplifting.
google avatar

Jordynn B.

Yelp
I love this place!! Corner food dine in spot for a quick bite The Agua Frescas was too die for, so fresh, good portion of ice to the juice. The Chips and chicharron and guacamole was delicious. So fresh. The chicharron was harder than usual but I still liked the crunch and flavor. The Asada fries were amazing! The jalapeño was super hot and hit the spot. I usually don't like nacho cheese on my Asada fries but it was perfect and it was a huge amount. I love how well dressed the fries were. I'll have to come back to try the machete, someone was kind enough to let me take a video of it for content

Jesse P.

Yelp
Do not come here. Very poor service, long waits, and the owner Alejandro os very rude and offensive. They placed my order and waited 45 minutes for my tacos to arrive just so I could discover it was the wrong ones. Meanwhile, random customers were walking into the kitchen and having great conversations with the cook as they prepare your food. Spare yourself the insult of coming here.
google avatar

Nicholas G.

Yelp
An improvement over the past business/owner! I remember coming here almost a year ago, when this place used to be owned by different people and was called Fonda Mixcoac y Panaderia. At that time I had gone solo and got the Machete (29", Pastor). I ate it all by myself! This time, I came with two of my friends, James and Trisha. We got here after work and had no problem getting seated as there were no other customers there (at the time). We were greeted by a woman who happily answered any question we had about the menu. We ordered the following: Salsa Flight w/ Totopos, Asada "Sucio" Fries, and a Machete Quesadilla (Asada). How was the food? - Salsa Flight w/ Totopos: The chips were OK, and the salsa was OK as well. The spicy one (the darkest red one) had a decent kick to it. - Asada "Sucio" Fries: These were pretty good. The fries with thin and delicious. There was a good portion of meat on the fries as well as the other ingredients (cheese, etc.). It was topped off with a delicious, spicy pepper. - Machete Quesadilla (Asada): 29" of deliciousness. It was much better than the last time I had it. So much meat and cheese. I love it. The only thing of concern was that it was super greasy/juicy. The thing was dripping like no other. Reading through the reviews my group must've gotten lucky with the service. We were helped in a timely manner by a friendly woman and her daughter, who was sitting at the table next to us. Not a bad place!
