Austin Restaurant Reviews: Spicy Sichuan at Fat Dragon, Classic Mexican at Fonda San Miguel | Eater Austin

"Visiting the 45-year-old interior Mexican restaurant Fonda San Miguel, I found that it was still "graceful." Calling its setting "transformative," I praised the tender cochinita pibil with "succulent smokiness," though my favorite remains the profoundly murky mole poblano I first tried in the early aughts; the sauce’s nutty cocoa alchemy still had me reaching for extra handmade tortillas to sop up every last drop. I noted that chef Caesar Ortiz returns to Mexico often, hosts visiting chefs, and introduces regional recipes, like a Yucatecan relleno negro in an "inky" sauce, to keep the menu fresh. I also sampled the restaurant’s "lavish" brunch and found the dessert table alone makes it worth the trip. Overall, I found the restaurant to be ahead of its time—mature, graceful, and never one to disappoint." - Erin Russell

Delicious buffet and salad with many options. Wait staff was friendly and were seen using hand sanitizer at many points -we were very impressed. This was one of our top buffets in SMA and we would definitely return.

Didn't have a chance to eat here. I arrived at 12:40pm, asked if there's a buffet, the waiter said NO (which is not true, it just hasn't started). I said, I thought I heard there's buffet here. He said, yes, but it starts at 1pm (which should have been his first reply, instead of a stern negative). I said, almost time (time being 12:40, 20 min away from buffet start time, which was a bit tight but doable for us). He said NO, usually we get things ready by 1:30 the earliest (then this is problem of the kitchen or restaurant... if you can't start at 1pm, don't advertise 1pm). The waiter seriously needs to learn some basics of customer service. I was being courteous the whole time, and he was just giving all the answers as if we were not welcomed. Time of event: Thursday, July 4th, 12:40pm so owner can go back and either give this guy that just started his job the day before some basic training. Thanks.

Do not eat here. Do not eat here. Do not eat here. The 'buffet' is a horror. The food is hideous, and if you have an American tummy, likely will make you as ill as it did me. There are many many many other better options in San Miguel.

Last month me and my family went to visit San Miguel de Allende and we had a reservation at some buffet called Fonda buffet . Biggest mistake I made on our vacation. It was lunch and they had about 6 chafer dishes with hardly any food in them. We went up to front desk and asked if they were going to fill up food again and they said they didn’t have enough cooks. We ended up eating leftovers salad and gelatin. After being very disappointed and waiting for 45 minutes to see if they would fill up station, we decided to talk to the owner. After speaking with the owner she replied, “ I already said sorry what else do u want me to do”? We told her that it was very unprofessional not to have food when we had reserved for 14 people. We ended up paying 110$ dollars for bad service and no food. I do not recommend this place to anyone. If the owners attitude would of been understanding and truly appolagetic it would of made a difference. I give them zero starz

The place was nice, very quiet but the only fail was the dish I choose. I choose a cordon blue but the cordon blue was frozen, some one that are sold in Sam's club because I buy the same ones there. I was hoping that they were made there but no.... and my GF milanesa de pollo was a bit tasteless. But anyway, good place. P.s no free water....

Good restaurant with a buffet to try local food. The service was nice and the place have a good decoration. Overall was a good experience, with nothing to envy to the other restaurants near to the parish church and El Jardín squere, but cheaper.

Fonda has great food (nothing fancy, but lots of great choices), friendly service, and has Character. Let your eyes wander around. Bring your camera.
