Fōnuts (faux donut) is Nancy Truman & Tom Furtado's love letter to doughnut lovers who happen to be gluten intolerant as Nancy is. They got their start at Farmer's Market and opened the first store in 2011. "The Enlightened Donut" is always baked fresh daily, never fried, made with almond flour, low to no-sugar and also offering vegan selections.
This Studio City location is their second in Los Angeles. The original is in Beverly Grove on 3rd Street. They are open from 8 am - 5 pm and, as I seem to be in this area at night, today was the first day I caught them open!
The lovely redhead behind the counter was very helpful and answered all my questions. I decided on the mini size and chose four: Churro, Lemon, Strawberry Shortcake and Blueberry-Earl Grey. The mini size is $1.75 each and provided me with two bites each. A half dozen goes for $10 and a dozen for $20.
These are very cake-like in texture and feature the use of real fruit, nuts, vanilla beans that you can actually see and taste. They are definitely less sugary and more dense than regular doughnuts. The flavors were all good without being overpowering.
Flavors available on rotation are: Fōtella, Buttermilk, Pumpkin, Blueberry-Earl Grey, Churro, Strawberry Shortcake, Vanilla, Double Chocolate, Lemon, Peanut Butter-Chocolate, Vanilla Latte, Dark Maple, Chocolate-Chip Cookie, Banana-Chocolate, Banana and Plain.
The regular sized fōnuts are pricey, at $4.50 each, $26 for a half dozen and $51 for a dozen. I imagine if I had celiac or was gluten-intolerant, being able to treat myself to doughnuts again would make it worth the price!
