14 Fantastic Specialty Markets in East Portland | Eater Portland

"This mom-and-pop grocery store has changed locations — and more recently, hands — since its founding in 2003, but remains one of the city’s go-to spots for vegan groceries. Tucked into a lot with Jet Black Coffee Company and Rad Magic Subs, the trio of like-minded businesses make for a vegan haven in the Gateway neighborhood. While stocking up on essentials like bulk soy curls, Jorinji miso, and Vtopian cheeses, pet owners can also pick up vegan pet food." - Janey Wong

Eat Your Way Through East Portland’s Vegan Destinations - Eater Portland

"After your morning coffee and snack, pop over to Jet Black’s neighbors at Food Fight, a vegan grocery store that’s been around for almost two decades. It’s usually well-stocked with cool vegan snacks made by local chefs, like Ice Queen paletas or Cultured Kindness cheese." - Latisha Jensen

Google
Great having a vegan grocery store but took off a star for asking for a tip on groceries. Owners should pay their employees a living wage and groceries are already so expensive. I did tip because I felt pressured to being asked but man is tipping getting out of hand. No other grocery store asks for tips, duly noted.

Unique selection of hard to find items, knowledgeable and friendly staff. Prices are fair for what the products are. Also the soft serve is delicious and the pizza is delicious and gluten free!

Food fight is so awesome! My family absolutely loves this vegan grocery store. Every time we visit Portland from Seattle, we always make a stop here. The grocery store is really nice and is laid out well. It is small, but has a lot of selections. They have unique vegan selections that we can’t find anywhere else! The employees are also very kind and nice. It’s a vintage grocery store vibe, yet modern vibe. They have a great pet food section as well. The prices are not the cheapest, but they are a small locally owned business, so this is to be expected. Their vegan soft serve ice cream and shakes are the best. Some of the best vegan ice cream I have ever had! I highly recommend Food Fight for your vegan grocery needs and unique vegan finds!

Excellent customer service. Unique products thoughtfully vegan. Always pleased with store stock and my favorite shopping experience!

Google
how fortunate to live in a city that has a 100% vegan grocery store. The staff is amazing and the wide array of grocery staples, food and drink options will impress you. Personally the great selection of candy bars is right up my alley. I too love their soft serve; a lot at that. BUT since the milkshake machine has been there I am completely addicted to those. Especially the chocolate peanutbutter one. Open 11 am to 7pm 7 days a week.

Google
WOW - Amazing vegan soft serve ice cream!! I am not usually a fan of vegan ice creams, truthfully, but this is an exception. In a cone! Better than dairy ice cream - for real. Also has lots of super cool snacks and goodies. This place wins the Food Fight!!!

Google
Great shop with loads of amazing vegan products. I've only been during COVID, so I've never been inside the store, but ordering was straightforward with their website. Place your order before 2 pm on the site if you want same day curbside pickup.

Google
Have stopped in twice now and had an amazing experience both times. Prices are what you'd expect for a vegan specialty store, staff were super welcoming and helpful, and the soft serve!!! Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
I have been shopping at Foodfight for 13 years, before the shop on Halsey even existed. It is not perfect, it has never been perfect, but I am still so grateful for an entirely vegan store that I can shop in easily. I love the new owners, it is so much more pleasant to shop without ear shattering music or grouchy employees or owners. Yes, some of the prices are a little high which can happen in a small boutique grocery, but it is definitely prohibitive when you are on a really tight budget. Also some of the variety has been lost lately, but some excellent food of their own making has been added so that is a definite plus.

Yelp
Absolutely awesome vegan grocery store. Great selections. Fresh made pizza and cookie options. Plus best milk shakes! Support local business and shop at Food Fight

Yelp
Food Fight! We had such a blast visiting one of the local all-vegan grocery in PDX! Loved this place; so many incredible options. Super clean, friendly services; we were overwhelmed with joy! We were for sure to take some stuff home! -Potpie -Breakfast sandwiches -Earth Balance Puffs -Chocolate Bar -& some swag! +++Bucha on tap!!! COVID Notes -Social distance & masks were requested. Staff wore masks. -Customer service was delightful, safe, and helpful -No issues at all. Thank you, Food Fight, for being a staple Vegan spot for the community!

Yelp
Vegan Trailblazers. These guys are the OG vegan pioneers of the PNW. I have followed them from their first store on SE 42nd and Caruthers. Back then, it was early on in my journey towards becoming 100% veganized, and I'd buy things like Stonewall's Jerquee and Kombucha. Nowadays, it's a way of life for me. I'm so happy they opened this store out east! They do the serious homework on cruelty-free products, so we don't have to. Some of things they offer: Pet food Household cleaners Chocolate A small produce section SANDWICHES Chips Uncle Eddie's cookies Jackfruit, and so much more. On top of that, they host pop-up events from other vegan folks, in turn introducing me to new things. The staff are friendly, and informative. Jet Black coffee shop is next door. Seriously the best coffee in town, with an array of dairy alternatives. Parking: Small parking lot with street parking alongside Halsey. Support your local small businesses, they're a dying breed.

Yelp
I've been going here for a number of years. Recently it changed ownership and there are some pluses about that( friendlier staff, soft serve!). The story used to have a very large selection of chips, popcorn's and such snacks. That has drastically dwindled! Disappointed but not a dealbreaker. The biggest thing is there prices are literally insanely higher than anywhere else I've ever been that Carry's vegan groceries. I understand food prices have inflated, and they're a small store, and I genuinely want them to thrive, but their prices are literally 2-3x more than if you found the same product elsewhere. It makes shopping there , even for snacks extremely expensive. Groceries should not be a stressful experience.. I appreciate they have a few items I've never seen before, just hope for an ease on prices .

Yelp
Food Fight!!!! This spot is perfect for picking up all of your vegan needs from cleaning supplies, paper goods, pet food, shelf stable goods, candy and chocolate, and frozen foods it's all here. The staff is super friendly and will answer any question that you may have. This location is right next to a great coffee bar and excellent vegan Mexican food truck.

Yelp
New location is not good. Unhealthy selection of endocrine disrupting junk food. I also found out that the owners believe in testing on and muzzling animals. I'd much rather spend my money at a farmer's market and eat real, fresh food.

Yelp
Thank you thank you thank you for coming so far East. It's a vegan-unfriendly wasteland out here. The closest Whole Foods or New Seasons is more than 6 miles away. It's awesome having all my animal-free favorites just a couple miles up the road. The store is small but packed with great selections of dry goods, frozen food, and products for cleaning, pet care, and personal grooming. I love discovering new things. Some of my new discoveries include Viana sausage sticks and Gopal's Power Wraps energy sticks.that are perfect for snacking at work. The staff are very friendly and always eager to locate an item or answer a question. Thank you for being a very welcome addition to Outer East Portland!

Yelp
Oh, gosh. I hate to give them only 3 stars, but I have to because it's a smaller selection than I'd like, and the prices are just too high for me to justify shopping here on a regular basis. One of the first things I noticed was a packaged Indian meal for nearly $4, when I get literally the exact same thing in a pack of 8 at Costco for $11. Their selection is alright, but consists mostly of packaged/canned and "junk" type vegan foods, all marked up quite a bit. I arrived famished, so I ended up getting a prepared packaged BBQ "pulled pork" sandwich from the refrigerator. It was pretty good, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way for it. So yeah. I'm super thankful this place exists, and I love all-vegan anything, but it's just not the go-to weekly stop I was hoping it'd be. With that said, I'll certainly be back. But not as often as I'd hoped.

Yelp
Amazing grocery store, great for vegans and non-vegans alike! My husband loves coming here to pick up dessert because of his dairy allergies. They have a great selection of dairy free ice creams and treats. The store is very clean and has a beautiful wood beamed ceiling with industrial lighting. Can't wait for the coffee shop next door to open and the neighborhood park that will be built nearby. This will be our new hang out spot!

Yelp
My family and I are beyond happy food fight came to NE !! FINALLY VEGAN marshmallows right around the corner. Seriously if your vegan there's no better place to get food, specially snacks and cheese.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing! So many options. Such great quality! It's so nice to be able to pick up literally anything in the store and know that it's vegan without having to read the ingredients. You guys rock!!

Yelp
Saw reviews that this was the place for vegan junk food heaven. It's quite small and didn't have a lot of what I was looking for. We were from out of town and was hoping to see frozen fried pickles, mozzarella sticks, cheese sauces, white chocolate, etc. It is probably very nice for a local neighborhood market for vegans, but I wouldn't choose to travel here again when there's vegan items in every grocery store.

Yelp
I think the Stark store is better product choice-wise,but it's good to have a vegan store in this area. I can't compare customer service as Food Fight is hit or miss with this and likely always will be (as it depends on who is working there. )It seems they are starting to hire nicer people these days. One of the dudes that used to work at the Stark store back in 2010 was a real jerk and a grump.

Yelp
What's better than having a Food Fight? Having 2! It's great to have a NE location. Always helpful updates on Instagram about specials, hot new items or what's about to run out. Always great staff (applies to both locations). Highly recommend

Yelp
So happy that Food Fight opened up a new location closer to home. This one has everything we used to drive across town for and even some of the same friendly faces. If you haven't been to Food Fight, it is an all vegan grocery store full of hard-to-find and delicious vegan snacks. I think of it more as a snack food place than a health food place but that largely reflects my own eating habits because they have lots of straight up health food too. They also have a good selection of gluten free items and vegan non-food items such as various hygiene and self-care products and cleaning products. They also have vegan dog food and treats!

Yelp
It's a well stocked grocery store that focuses on vegan products. The service is friendly and great. One of the best in PDX. On top of that, this business is always collecting and donating to nearby animal shelters and human purposes. Truly a responsible business that supports our community.

Yelp
Thank goodness they opened a store out east here! Finally an easy source for soy curls, Snackrelige sandwiches and whatnot. Staff is always super friendly. Easy parking. Bonus adjacent coffee shop and now Vegan Gorditos!

Yelp
Great little vegan store, with a large selection! Food Fight bings some shine to a dull area , and I am glad they moved into the neighborhood. The service was great, and the employees are helpful. I highly recommend this friendly vegan market! I hope their presence encourages more great business to move in.

Yelp
We love it because it's a go to spot in our neighborhood... We just wish it was much much bigger with more fresh fruits and vegetables.

Lucy K.

Yelp
Although it's not the only vegan grocery store in Portland, it's in my neighborhood and within walking distance. It's conveniently located next door to my favorite coffee shop, jet black.

Jenn A.

Yelp
A little expensive, but that's okay. Great mini vegan grocery store. They have everything from vegan shrimp to sour cream, cleaning supplies, and vitamins. They even have soft serve ice cream cones!Makes shopping easy since you don't have to read any labels.

Ek Balam G.

Yelp
Nice selection of meat/dairy alternatives, a large selection of quick/instant meals, canned goods. They also have pet food, daily personal items like deodorants, toothpaste as well candy bars.
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
I love having a store where everything is vegan! The staff is awesome, and the music is always fantastic. Plus, this location is only one mile from my house! I'm hoping they'll put in a soft-serve like the Stark location has.

Yelp
A perfect little mart in the NE with everything a vegan might want/need. Very kind and cool staff.
