Yelp
I had high hopes coming in because of the rave reviews, but I am rating it a 4/5.
Hometown feel - if you're a local this place is the place to be on a Wednesday (or probably any) night. It seemed a lot of people knew others, I almost felt like I was in a time warp because I've never lived somewhere were all the people in a restaurant knew one another, it was really neat. Mostly it was older couples (60's) on dates, which was adorable! I don't think I see that enough. Sharing wine, deep in conversation, caring about nothing in the world other than what their date has to say - I think that was my favorite part.
I guess the menu changes often, I read a ton of reviews recommending the burger but there was no burger so here are reviews on what we ordered.
Wednesday - 1/2 off wine! Woo! Never a bad deal if you drink wine.
Rainbow Trout - It's the full fish with onions and lemons cooked inside. The root veggies underneath were some of the best I had. The sauce was an oil/lemon/caper flavor and paired superb with the dish. Truly a delicious dish. Only downside is the time it takes to get all the bones out, and the skin off. I will eat some of the skin, but I can't do it all - definitely a European thing and I can't hang.
Grilled Flat Iron Steak - we were worried it would be tough and overcooked, but it was cooked perfectly! It was actually very tender and juicy and had tons of flavor. The veggies were a tad undercooked and tough, but I think that's better than being mushy and overcooked. The egg on top was a nice touch. It's nice to order a steak and not get a ton of white carbs/potatoes so you leave feeling satisfied and not stuffed. Definitely recommend this dish too.
There is a bar area you can sit at with one TV, but otherwise the restaurant is quaint and cute. The tables are a little too close together for the space, I think. I just think given the space, they don't need to pack so many tables, it's not NYC. Literally the girls butts grazed over the top of our table when they got in/out - there was only enough room to scoot sideways to get to the seats, that's how close they are. Since the music was quiet all I could hear were the conversations from the 3 girls to my left who were out for a birthday, and the 2 ladies to my left (which if I never looked I would have thought it was just one) because she complained about her life the entire meal. Aside from that, the couples around were still adorable and the ambiance was very nice.
Staff, our waitress was an older woman and she was very attentive and very nice. She did due diligence when she didn't know an answer, and always made sure we were taken care of, never had to flag her down. Definitely appreciated that.
Since the menu is very small I don't think we'll be back this trip, but it was a nice meal and worth trying if you're passing through Birmingham.
