Foothill Regional Park is a beloved community space lauded by the Sonoma County Gazette and local hiking blogs for its gentle trails, scenic ponds, and abundant spring wildflowers. The park’s quiet atmosphere and accessible paths make it ideal for families, casual walkers, and anyone looking for a peaceful escape close to town. With its history as a former ranch and continued management by Sonoma County Regional Parks, Foothill Park remains a staple of local outdoor life.

How lucky we are to have such a natural resource for our community. If I could come every day to enjoy the views, the walks and hikes I would. Safe, chill people, lots going on. Big fan, highly recommend

Google
A really good trail for adults and children alike! They have options for all able bodied people and I cannot wait to try this trail with a dirt bike! Apparently Horses are allowed too! So much fun, wildlife and connection to nature, and the views are spectacular! The best part: absolutely free!! My tip: pack a lunch, some beverages and hike up to the second highest point which has a picnic table (or down by the lake with the ducks) and enjoy the beautiful nature!

Google
One of my all time favorite places to have a casual hike. It's expansive, but not too many steep hills, and beautiful! Nice wide trails to walk alone, with a friend, or even as a group. Places to sit and take a break and picnic areas too. I've been going here for over 5 years.

Google
Beautiful slice of heaven. The trails take you around in different directions around a lake and up into the hills. My dog loves this place! I love to see the other dogs people bring and the occasional horse on the trails. Beautiful vistas, and high and low points to get a good hike in. I like coming here to clear my mind, and enjoy nature at its best. (I added some pics during Aug 2020 that shows some of the fire damage. Foothill still is beautiful and a spectacular place to walk/hike and enjoy nature at its best).

Google
Good park with some well maintained trails. You can hike/run them for a 4 miles loop. There are also a few little lakes (no swimming!) And the views of the surroundings are really nice!

Google
Beautiful hike not too difficult. We did the whole thing from the Alta vista trail through the Oakwood Trail and back to the car by the West Side Trail.

Google
Absolutamente beautiful. Popular around 9am to 10am its a beautiful community park. Great walk/run workout.

Google
Beautiful hiking & trails for all levels.

Yelp
I've been living in Windsor for about three years and. Finally made it to this beautiful place. The trails lead to such beautiful views. We decided to hike up the more intense trail and it was so worth it. There were quite a few others hiking as well and most people seem to respect it. Picking up their trash and making sure to leave it as it was before setting up their picnic spot. Net time I'm going to make sure to bring my on picnic. This time I only brought snacks and water to sustain me while hiking. I'm so blessed to live in an area that provides this wonderful piece of Mother Nature.

Yelp
I liked it . We did the easy hike and hit all three lakes. Park outside on the street . It's easier and plenty of parking. Otherwise you have to pay. It was a very nice Saturday afternoon. There were quite a bit of people there hiking with their dogs. It have a nice family feeling to the park.
google avatar

Yelp
Foothill Regional Park has nearly 7 miles of trails so there are plenty of different trails that you can take. It's great for those at different hiking levels. There is a common loop where it overlooks the town of Windsor and it has beautiful views. There are three different lakes that you can hike to. Dogs are allowed on leash. There is a fee for parking or free if you have the Sonoma Parks Pass. There is free parking on the street outside the parking lot as well. There are bathrooms near the parking lot, which is nice as well. This place can get a little crowded at times, so I would recommend hiking earlier in the day when there is fewer people out on the trails.
google avatar

Oralia R.

Yelp
Need a time to relax and breath fresh Air? Foot hills is the place. Beautiful views great place to go for hikes or just for a nice walk. Over looks the town of Windsor if you walk to top of the hill. Great place to bring family for a perfect out door walk.
google avatar

Linda S.

Yelp
Great place for an exercise hike or trail run. The large loop around outside is a good workout and trails around lakes are beautiful. Lots of birds. Many people there on trails but doesn't feel crowded. Inner hikes through center of park have less people.

Yelp
Celebrating Earth Month with a recent hike at Foothill Regional Park...in the foothills of the Mayacama Mountains! Think rolling hills, ridge top views, ponds, flowers. We found the trails to be clean and well maintained. This is a beautiful park that we're lucky to have nearby in Windsor, east of 101. Per the website, "Foothill Regional Park offers 6.8 miles of trails that vary from the challenging climb up Alta Vista Trail to the easy stroll along Three Lakes Trail." There are a few hiker-only trails and a few trails also open to cyclists and equestrians (note: always defer to an equestrian/horse). Dogs ARE allowed on leash - just be sure to clean up after your fur friends! Parking is available in a lot for $7. The lot was full but we found free parking on the nearby streets. We enjoyed our 4-ish mile, not too strenuous hike and hope to return soon!

Yelp
Nice trails to jog or for walks and nice views. Plenty of trails to choose from or if you like fishing there are 4 ponds but fishing is only allowed in three. Park is not lonely so is safe. No need to travel far for beautiful views in Sonoma county.
google avatar

Yelp
Lots of trails to run and ride bikes Today I was biking and there's three routes that you can do and it's not extremely long but there are some good inclines The views also are very nice as there's a couple lakes that exist inside the park This park's also very friendly and in next to neighborhoods. Will be coming back to do some trail running or more biking
google avatar

Yelp
Great park for some urban hiking. Don't know what's up with the locals though..... my wife and I said hello to two different people while we were walking around the lake- the both just stared at us. Really weird. If you are a local and reading this, let me know what the code word is please.
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful Regional Park with a bathroom at the entrance parking area. Dog friendly and lots of trails to choose from with a small tranquil loop around the first pond you come to. Very tranquil with aquatic birds and lots of other birds plus benches scattered around. Friendly hikers and very peaceful place to enjoy nature, read a book or a picnic.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place to go on a hike & the other places that are beautiful! Great views if you can reach them especially at sundown to get amazing pictures! Also a great place for Christmas photos!!!
google avatar

Yelp
One of my favorite regional parks to go Hiking regularly. I come every day before I go to work so I can get away from society and connect with nature. It is wonderful to know that this is a park, backyard 10/10

Yelp
I'm not a big fan of Foothill Regional Park. It's a nice small park, with some nice trails. The issue is, it's too crowded for me. If you fall and snap a bone, it's great because someone will walk by to check on you every minute or so. Being a small park, if you do the outer loop, it's just about three mile hike. There are other trails within the perimeter where you can get in some extra length. There are two steep inclines, Alta Vista and an unmarked trail about 50 yards past that get your heart beating. The park is in good shape, even after some recent rains, the trails were relatively dry w/ minimal mud. The park is dog friendly, so if you want to bring your best friend along, they'll appreciate the exercise. If I want a bit little more of a challenge in a more serene setting (not dog friendly though), try Shiloh Ranch Regional Park a few miles away. Like I said, there are too many people for me at Foothill. I don't want to hear someone's conversation from a distance. It kind of takes away from being out in nature, trying to enjoy the scenery (dang I sound old).
google avatar

Raoul V.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places to hike. Good for dogs too. Several trails to chose from and several lengths. It gets a bit dry here in late summer. Pay for parking or park free across the street.
google avatar

Kokett C.

Yelp
Such a beautiful place to go walk, enjoy nature and just relax. Love the wildlife. On evenings and weekends is is bustling with people. Most are friendly. Please remember to pick up you dog poo.
google avatar

Maria G.

Yelp
This is a good place to go to for variety. There are a few different trails, depending on how hard you feel like working out. There is parking available on the side of the road and a few parking spots available inside the gates. They have accesible trails for those with limited mobility. They have single stall bathrooms available at the entrance.
google avatar

Amanda B.

Yelp
There are so many different trails within this park. Some are easier and some more challenging. I appreciate the fact that there are so many options. It has so many beautiful views and considering that it survived a fire, it means a lot to the community. I would recommend it to anyone beginning their hiking journey. Great resource.

Yelp
***~~~DOGS WELCOME~~~*** This one of my most favorite Sonoma County Regional Parks. There are so many trails that snake their way through this beautiful park. You can choose your destiny if you'd like something a little easier. Or of you feel like a champ and want a challenge, climb the Alta Vista trail. There are 3 man made lakes. If you're feeling extra ambitious, you can easily stroll around all 3 flawlessly. The regional park charge is $7.00 but everyone seems to park on the street and walk in. Not supporting the regional park system. This has been a great spot to bring the dogs. *** Watch for ticks ***

Yelp
Quick update on this very popular hiking park. Foothill is situated in the middle of Windsor, across from a large residential community. There are a variety of trails to walk from an easy stroll around the two ponds which are fairly close to the park entrance to a more vigorous hike which might include Westside, Oakwood and Alta Vista trails. There is a trail for everyone here and note that dogs ON LEASH are allowed. Dog owners, please adhere to the on leash policy. We witnessed a near accident between a horse and an off leash dog which could have been really bad for the horse and rider. Although we are in the middle of summer, I especially like Foothill in the winter. The trails here have a rock foundation and even after a hard rain there is virtually no mud and any puddles, even large ones are easily walked around. Very different than Shiloh Regional Park which is only a few miles away but has a clay foundation which makes it impossible to hike after a hard rain. Sonoma County is home to so many beautiful parks, get out and enjoy them!!

Kristin B.

Yelp
Beautiful setting and pretty easy trails for hiking/walking. Beware that the trail markers are a little confusing though
google avatar

Parker S.

Yelp
Very nice park, with a handful of trails, from easy to moderate. The park is filled with beautiful trees, a few ponds and some beautiful views! It's a great spot for a quick hike, the trail around whole park was just over three miles but definitely a good workout with an incline, easy to break a sweat. Dog friendly. Paid parking lot with bathrooms but street parking very close.
google avatar

Gabrielle L.

Yelp
A beautiful scenic escape in Sonoma County! There are many trails with varying levels of difficulty which makes this park great for people of all ages. The oakwood trail is one of my favorite trails because it is a steep climb and when you get to the top the view overlooks wine country.
google avatar

Yelp
Went on a hike with my dog. Didn't go as far as I would want since it got too hot out but the view was great. Loved it. Maybe I'll try again some other time when there's less heat. The only thing that annoyed me was seeing poop literally everywhere on the trail, whether it's horse poop or dog poop. I had to avoid them and tell my dog to "leave it" almost every time we walked past one.
google avatar

Jacqueline W.

Yelp
Beautiful area, with many hiking trails and lovely vistas. Perfect if you have a dog!

Yelp
For me, this place is as good as it gets. I feel like a ding-a-ling because I've worked only a few miles from this park for almost 7 years and had only learned of it's existence a month ago. I didn't really expect to be all that thrilled, but let me tell you, this park is beyond beautiful and exceeded my expectations. We are so fortunate to live in such a lovely county with options like Foothill Regional Park for walking, hiking, horseback riding and biking. I now go to Foothill Park often, and enjoy my time there always. I like to start on the Westside trail and connect to the Oakwood trail, then ending with the Three Lakes trail. It's about 2.5 miles total, and if you add in the Pond B and Pond A loops into the mix, you'll hit over 3 miles for sure. Total it takes about 45 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes to complete the full loop, and that's without really stopping to check out the scenery and views. If you want to take your time the 2.5 mile loop would take no more than an hour. If you feel like doing the Alta Vista trail which connects to the Three Lakes and also the Oakwood, you'll see some of the best views of Sonoma County from the top. It is pretty darn steep coming down though, so be aware. It was a little hard on my knees so if you have knee issues, you may want to avoid the Alta Vista trail or bring a walking stick to help you down the hill so you give your knees a break. Someone on the trail had warned me about the steepness coming down, and I just kinda brushed it off as an exaggeration, but she was not kidding, it's steep! So worth it though if you don't mind a little trek up and down hill. The view from the top is spectacular. Foothill Regional park is often crowded but I don't feel like I'm constantly crossing paths with people, so it's really nice to go anytime of day. It seems busiest after people start to get off of work during week days. There is a $7.00 parking fee as there is at all regional parks. I bought a parks pass that is good for a year, and I've already paid it off after only a few park visits. It's well worth the investment if you're a parks lover and plan to go often. Besides, without our support places like this will not be an option to enjoy if there's no money coming in to keep them up. Don't be one of those folks who always parks on the street for free. Please support our parks and pay the parking fee or get a yearly parks pass to save some money and enjoy our awesome Sonoma County parks.

Yelp
Of all the places in Sonoma County I've been to for hiking I can't believe I haven't been here yet until today. Not too crowded with a decent amount of street parking. Peaceful little lakes. Dog friendly which is a major plus. I Will be back here again on a warmer day for a longer hike
google avatar

Mariah H.

Yelp
Really enjoy hiking here with my dogs. The weather wasn't amazing the last time I went which meant that there were hardly any people, which was wonderful. It can be as easy or difficult as you choose to make it. We've hiked it with more of a jog which really tires out the pups, but this time we casually strolled and took in all of the smells and views. There were deer and squirrels roaming around, the sun was shining, and all was good.

Yelp
I've been hiking, and biking the trails here for the greater part of 15yrs. I am very reluctant to post this as this is one of my favorite spots. I have seen its popularity grow over the years, and I'm sure it wont be long before this spot is as packed as howarth park / spring lake. Bottom line this is a wonderful park! If you are from out of town, and you brought your hiking shoes, bike, or picnic basket, I highly recommend this spot. This is what Sonoma County is all about... It has some pretty tough hills, but they are worth it when you see the views that await you at the top. All I ask is that if you visit MY local parks, you respect them as if they are your own! Pack it in, pack it out... Only leave foot prints, and only take pictures, and memories!
google avatar

Kelly O.

Yelp
Great place for a leisurely 3 mile hike to get your day started. Lots more people than I'm typically used to on a trail but all seemed friendly. Dogs for days! Some friendly, some. It so much. I definitely recommend this spot to all. The path terrain is manicured and easy to navigate. Hiking shoes recommended for rocky areas.
google avatar

Kimberly H.

Yelp
The walk can be a bit rough, bit it's not a strenuous hike. The scenery is absolutely break-taking. There are benches throughout the trail for those needing a break. Pet friendly. Ample street parking and private parking. Grab the dog poop bags at the beginning of the trail, however, as they are a bit more difficult to find once you begin the trek.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is my old stomping ground. I grew up in Elsbree just across the street from here. I have fond memories of riding my bike up here and swimming in the second lake. You are not supposed to swim, but we did anyway. A fellow old skool Windsorian and I came here the day after thanksgiving for some anti-black friday hiking and we were pleasantly surprised how awesome it is after all these years. I don't know why this place fell off my hiking radar, but I haven't been there in over 20 years and my parents still live in that neighborhood! It seems like they have added a lot more trails in the last 20 years. Most of it is a nice mix of up and down.....nothing too strenuous. Highlights include amazing vistas of the town Windsor, which was looking smashing at peak fall color. Also, the oak woodlands are a little different here. The trees all seem a little bit stunted...bonsaied almost. Very cool. I think the soil is rather scant and rocky which keeps the Valley Oaks from getting as big as they do down in the valley bottoms. There are also lots of very impressive Manzanitas up here. There is one by the second lake that is massive and spectacular and is worth a detour. We had a great time here, and it is highly recommended. Its an easy hike and you can soak most of it up in about 3 hours.
google avatar

Cindi W.

Yelp
Nice moderate hike with hills and lakes. A good workout anytime. Good trail conditions even after 4 inches of rain!! Smells good and life is great here!!
google avatar

J V.

Yelp
Really liked this park. So many fun different pathways and great workout for us and the dog. I love that there are many trash cans throughout the park. Had to take one star off because we found a small black tick on our dog. He is on tick medications but before coming here again we will use a natural spray of essential oils ...just in case.
google avatar

Daniel G.

Yelp
The hiking trails were awesome! Very family friendly and amazing views. Plenty of rest stops and picnic benches along the way. Not crowded at all and if you park across the street you don't have to pay. Will definitely be putting in some miles this summer!
google avatar

Jillian R.

Yelp
Beautiful and small park in which to enjoy the changing seasons and a quiet walk. With easy and well-maintained trails, it is a very nice place for solitude. The paths are wide and well-marked. We did about a 3 mile walk/hike, saw the 3 lakes, and covered the perimeter of the park. Easy parking either in the lot (with a pass or for a fee) or plentiful parking on the street. I will return to enjoy this pleasant and peaceful park.
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
Thanks Yelp! And thank you to Stephanie A. for letting me know in her review that dogs are welcome here. It sucks when you go to a trail and see a NO DOGS sign while you have your pup by your side! I came out here on a Monday morning and was able to park for free on the street instead of paying $7 just to hike for an hour. I saw people unloading horse trailers, riding bikes, hiking, running and enjoying the beautiful day. You can find the trail maps on the park's website which helps if you haven't been here before. I decided to do a mile loop and it wasn't that hard. Some areas are steeper than others and the Bobcat trail is definitely a bit uneven and narrow but not difficult. I only went around one small lake but I think there is another one at this park. There are large oak trees, grass, and views of the city once you go up the trail a ways. There are bathrooms when you first come in the park as well. The parks sits in a neighborhood which is probably why I never knew this place existed but I'm glad I did.
google avatar

Yelp
Really great place to go on a hike. None of the trails are super long but you can make your hike longer by connecting a few of the trails into one longer trip. Beautiful views during your hike including an exceptional view of Sonoma County when you reach the peak. Several nice ponds and lakes throughout the walk. Decently maintained trails. Encountered a lot of nice friendly locals during our hike. My only criticism is that some of the trails can be quite Rocky so they are a little tough to manage. Really impressed with this park, I plan to return soon! Tip: even though the park has paid parking, you can also easily park on the main public Street for free. This is a great feature given that some parks don't really offer that option. Side note, however, you may want to pay to park to support the parks.
google avatar

L B.

Yelp
This was a great area for hiking. There's lots of short hikes, but also the option to keep circling around for longer ones. There are a few that are pretty steep, so you may want to check the maps for difficulty before heading to some of them if you're not wanting to work up too much of a sweat. We saw lots of dogs on the trail, so it's definitely dog friendly - but PLEASE keep your dogs on a leash. We love dogs & have three big ones of our own, but it's still disconcerting to have an unknown dog running loose just so the owner doesn't have to keep them reined in. Parking on-site was about $7 and the lot was nearly empty as most folks were parking along the street for free. We were just visiting and paid the price - well worth it for our 2 hours there.
google avatar

Stephanie V.

Yelp
A gem in my own backyard! Beautiful scenery, wildlife and trails. There is so much I've yet to discover here, but my favorite trails are the Bobcat to the Westside Trail. Hiking around the lakes is nice too. You can customize your experience by keeping it really level and mellow, or you can get your major hike on and conquer some serious inclines. I can't get enough of this place.
google avatar

Crazee J.

Yelp
This park is great. My only wish is that everyone who parks on the street pay to something to use these parks. Anything. Without out direct support we will see these spaces close. Just saying. .
google avatar

Leilani S.

Yelp
This park is #1 on my list whenever I visit family in Windsor. I can walk to it from the house we stay at and the trails are wonderful! Coming from Hawaii, hiking here is a little different but just as wonderful! I love the little trail system that allows you to explore this park. The trails are well maintained and easy to follow. I often switch trails to do different loops within the park. I babywear on this trail and have even let my son run around. If we go early enough we can see the deer (yes we don't see wild animals like this in Hawaii) and lots of birds! I hear there are sometimes snakes (yikes!) but we haven't encountered any of those. There are even some lakes you can go by. Whether you are going for a trail run, leisurely stroll or something in between, this park is a must visit when in Windsor.
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
This is a wonderful park with several lakes, wide trails, beautiful trees and views of Windsor and beyond. It is dog friendly and very safe as there are usually plenty of others hiking the trail. I like to do the perimeter trail which has plenty of hills and takes just under an hour (Westside Trail).
google avatar

Adam K.

Yelp
Nice trails, good mix of flat terrain and some hills. It was also pretty secluded on Wed. when I was there.
google avatar

Nicholas T.

Yelp
Great park for a half day hike. Recommend the Alta Vista trail, really good workout and ends with a great view of westside Windsor. Keep following the trail, you'll zig-zag back down, and hike up and down some beautiful rolling hills. You can cut through to the Three Lakes trail or stay on the perimeter of the park via Westside trail. Not a large park, the whole park takes about 2 hours to hike, but wonderful Sonoma County views, you'll forget you're in the middle of suburbia.
google avatar

Cori C.

Yelp
One of my favorite hikes when I'm looking to get out for a while but not looking for something overly strenuous or far. I love how they have multiple routes that allow for a "mix and match" approach...where you get to determine how far you go. The farthest I was able to concoct without overlapping too much was about 3.5 miles. The trails are generally wide and clear, with few rocky parts...perfect for trail running the majority. The Alta Vista trail allows for a fairly decent incline if you want to push yourself, though be prepared for a steep rocky section for one leg. Busy on weekends but not overly crowded, and also dog friendly! Would definitely recommend.
google avatar

Scott A.

Yelp
Convenient park with nice trails, singletrack and wide, beautiful views and lots of oaks. I like this park primarily for running or walking the dog. Mountainbiking not so much, since it's not big like Annadel, and because of the impedance by foot traffic. The outer path loop is something like 2.5mi with rolling terrain.
google avatar

Hasan T.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I like to hike occasionally and this place is always on our radar. Awesome scenery and great views of Sonoma County (looking south). Some steeper trails so be careful. Just a great hike, overall.

G P.

Yelp
I took Captain, 2 year old Siberian Husky, for a walk for the first time at Foothill Regional Park. It's been over 16 years since I've last hiked the park. Although many trees were burnt by the 2019 Wildfire it is still very scenic and worth hiking the many trails. Captain seemed to enjoy the hike with its shady trails and although we encountered many other dogs on the trail her CGC training/certification came in handy as she did not bother other dogs, people or the grazing sheep in the area. We will be returning sooner than 16 years, possibly next weekend. We strongly recommend this park as it has a lot to offer and having a SoCo Regional Park's pass made the parking convenient.
google avatar

Mimi G.

Yelp
Such a beautiful park and place to hike. The trails are well marked and maintained and everywhere you turn there is another beautiful vista to enjoy. You can pay to park in the small lot or if you have a county pass like we do it works here. There is also plenty of street parking available just outside of the park if you prefer to avoid the charge and walk a little further. Saw lots of dogs on the trails so it seems to be a very puppy friendly place. We saw so many pretty wildflowers right now too. There are some picnic tables and park benches here and there throughout the park. Really enjoyed our time - we will definitely go back.
