On the Grid : Footscray Community Arts Centre

"Beyond the culturally diverse exhibitions and events held at FCAC, this community space is a truly vital institution cultivating social progress through contemporary arts. Of huge importance, FCAC strives to provide a platform to recognise and celebrate the creativity within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Each year the various spaces at FCAC host Wominjeka Festival, ‘a rich and diverse program of art, music, performance and activities that deeply reflects Indigenous culture in Melbourne’s west, and Australia.’ The grounds of the centre feature a mix of colonial buildings, state of the art galleries, a family-friendly café, rolling lawns, palm trees, a murky river, industrial surroundings and sometimes hosts massive festivals like Laneway Festival. It’s all very Footscray. Photography by Gianna Rizzo." - Susu Studio

The community arts center was small and underwhelming. Furthermore, it is also positioned at a not so convenient spot from the train station. However, the exterior gardens area adjacent to the footscray wharf was pretty decent.

Attended the NAIDOC event last week, and there was a native flower box making session. Loved it. This is my arrangement, which I have given to Australian Multicultural Community Services, for the NAIDOC event I'm facilitating again this year on the 9th July at Millennium House in Seddon. There is work happening at the arts centre, and the plans for an outdoor performance area look amazing.

Multiple buildings with large public open space facilitating a range of arts and culture events and is well loved by locals. All buildings are wheelchair accessible. public space has an abundance of seating, a public artwork and large grass spaces by the river. Multiple artist studios, exhibition spaces and performing arts. The organization supports local, emerging and underrepresented groups. A cafe shares the older bluestone building with an abundance of outdoor and indoor seating, local goods, baked treats and strong coffee.

A lovely spot just a few minutes away from Footscray station. You get an awesome panoramic view of the city from here, and can simply enjoy the well maintained gardens by the riverside or grab a bite and a coffee at the Cafe. A lovely spot for a picnic or a night out with friends

Amazing, diverse, eye opening space for local art and artists community. Staff area very receptive and helpful. I had many questions, about price listing's, artist development programmes, etc. Grace at the desk was generous with her time and information. She also mentioned the future reaching focus of FCAC to support the Aboriginal and indigenous communities as well as African diaspora community which is so a part of Footscray. I really value that FCAC is prioritising voices that need more air time (for several reasons).

Just an awesome space for local artists in the west. Free events, workshops. Live music, installations and exhibitions. Educational and fun.

Yelp
I support the arts, unabashedly and whole heartedly. Footscray community arts centre has the best gallery spaces in the west. The centre consists of two major spaces. The Warehouse, and Henderson House. Henderson House is a bluestone building that is listed on the National Trust Register of Historic Buildings. Spaces in Henderson House include the Basement Lounge, Basement Theatre, the Gabriel Gallery. It also houses the offices of a variety of arts tenants and two Artists-in-Residence studios. The Warehouse The recently redeveloped warehouse building, located immediately next to Henderson House, is home to the Roslyn Smorgon Gallery, the Performance Space, the Digital Media Hub, the Warehouse Meeting Room, two Visual Art Studios and the Centre's administrative offices. The Warehouse Basement has also been redeveloped, and now is home to Enza's Studio (a large rehearsal space) as well as Mario's Studio (a new art studio). Footscray Community Arts centre, offers many many services opportunities for all the arts, music, dance, performance, visual, all in the one place. Afterwards pop into the happy river cafe for brunch, lunch or a coffee!
