On the Grid : Footscray Market

"In contrast to the nearby Little Saigon Market, which was also due to be featured amongst Footscray’s landmarks before it was tragically destroyed by fire – Footscray Market is by no means a hidden gem. Iconic would be a more apt description. Take their gloriously 90’s logo plastered on all sides of the building for example. Stepping inside is continuously claimed to be an experience akin to time travel. It’s a fair call. The grimy halls lead you to many nooks where you find the real gold. The fruit & veg stalls are hit & miss at times (and the food-miles are questionable.) Regardless, it’s still pretty thrilling to buy lychees, plantains and mangoes with your loose change. The food court boasts a throwback design of perfectly-aligned circular tables and stools that you won’t find in the air-conditioned nightmare of modern shopping centres. Here you can grab a plate of fluorescent noodles from the creatively-named ‘Asian Food’. On the way out pick-up some fresh fish, imported Mexican chillies and a lacey pair of panties. Where to Eat in Footscray, Melbourne’s Most Exciting Food Neighborhood | Eater

"The neighborhood’s unifying hub and demographic microcosm, this bustling warehouse-style market feels like the entire suburb under one roof: Asian specialty grocers, Greek butchers, Middle Eastern delis, Filipino stalls, noodle shops and coffee houses. It’s a cook’s market rather than a supermarket—reliable for salmon collars, chicken feet, fresh turmeric, bunches of culantro, herbs still on the root, globe artichokes, bags of chiles, makrut lime, banana leaves and seasonal shellfish such as blood cockles—plus takeaway treats and bread from nearby bakeries." - Jess Ho

Google
Footscray Market – I finally visited for the first time after planning to go for so long, and now it’s officially one of my favorite spots in Melbourne! This is not a fancy tourist market, but a truly local one, full of life, energy, and diversity. The atmosphere is buzzing with vendors calling out, the aroma of fresh food, and people from many different cultures blending together beautifully. You’ll find everything here – Asian, African, Indian, and Western foods all in one place. The produce is fresh, the seafood selection is huge, and the prices are very reasonable. A special highlight for me is the **beef section** – there’s such a wide variety of cuts like chuck steak and topside, all at amazing prices. Angus beef for just over $10 per kilo… unbelievable! For meat lovers, this place is heaven. The seafood stalls are also impressive, with so many categories and options. I even spotted frozen clams labeled from Thailand (which I had never seen back home). It takes me about 40 minutes to drive here, but it’s absolutely worth it to stock up. Footscray Market is vibrant, affordable, and a true cultural melting pot – highly recommended for anyone who loves food and local experiences.

Google
a great place to shop! Lots of fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, and seafood at good prices. There are also many Asian groceries and specialty stores. It’s busy and lively, but the atmosphere is friendly. Parking can be a little tricky sometimes, but overall it’s a great market for fresh and affordable shopping.

Google
Fanatic place for authentic cheap eats. Highlights where the Bahn Mi ( big call but best in Melbourne) and only $10. The Philippino Pork Blood stew and Pork Bun were also delicious. Will definitely come back. As for the markets it transported me back to HCM City or Hanoi just an absolute treat!

Google
My favorite market so far. Not as big or as overwhelming as QV market but has everything you need. I think it's mostly an Asian market. Seafood is cheap. Meats are well priced. Vendors are nice and friendly. There are food stalls selling delicious Vietnamese food.

Google
Very nice market with minimal shops compared to Victoria market. Good place to get the meat, fish and chicken at an economy rate compared to Victoria market. Parking available here for a cheap rate.

Fresh food here is reasonably priced. The Vietnamese restaurants around and inside the market are delicious. Parking isn’t hard to find. I recommend coming for a walk and checking it out.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Vibrant Market with Fresh Produce and Great Prices Footscray Market is a fantastic place for fresh produce, diverse cuisine, and affordable shopping. Located conveniently near Footscray Station, it’s a bustling market that offers an authentic cultural experience, reflecting the area’s strong Vietnamese, African, and multicultural influences. The variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and seafood here is impressive, with prices often much lower than supermarkets. The butchers and fishmongers provide excellent cuts and fresh catches daily. If you enjoy cooking Asian or African dishes, this market is perfect for finding specialty ingredients that are hard to get elsewhere. One of the highlights is the selection of food stalls serving delicious Vietnamese, Chinese, and other Asian street food. The bánh mì, pho, and roast meats are must-tries, offering authentic flavors at reasonable prices. There are also bakeries and dessert shops with tasty treats like pandan waffles and egg tarts. While the market can get crowded, especially on weekends, the lively atmosphere is part of its charm. The vendors are friendly and often happy to share cooking tips or recommendations. Parking can be tricky, so taking public transport is a good idea. Overall, Footscray Market is a gem for fresh food lovers and bargain hunters. Whether you’re shopping for groceries or just grabbing a quick bite, it’s a must-visit spot in Melbourne’s west!

Yelp
I frequent many markets and Footscray market is one of the cheapest in town, hands down. If you're an adventurous cook, lots of sometimes hard to find produce is available too. Live crabs, pork belly and Asian herbs and spices. Be prepared for crowds.

Yelp
I was told to go to these markets by a friend who said they are super cheap but I was grossly disappointed. Especially after comparing the prices to south Melbourne markets. Here a small bag of carrots cost 2.99 whereas you can get a large bag of carrots for $1 at south Melbourne markets. Most prices marched those at Woolworths and coles and watermelon cost 1.30 a kilo whereas Woolworths had been selling it for a dollar per kilo this week. Onions and tomatoes cost the same as Woolworths. Plus its uber crowded. People are constantly yelling out prices. Parking is a pain. save yourself the trouble and go to south Melbourne markets.

Yelp
Footscray market is awesome! There is no two ways about it. After making the horrible blunder of trying to cook a full roast dinner for Christmas lunch the year before, the next time around we decided to do the proper Aussie Christmas with a BBQ and tons of seafood. But where to go for such items? A friend recommended the Footscray Market and as we had a car at this time we decided to check it out. It's mainly Asian with an abundance of fresh fruits and veggies, an endless amount and huge diversity of fresh fish, tons of different meats, and more surprises along the way. For the 8 or 9 people at our Christmas dinner we ended up spending a miniscule $70 (not because we are tight but just because everything is so cheap). Highlights were a gigantic bunch of coriander for $1, 2kg of fresh green mussels for $10, a whole fairly large snapper for $6 amongst other bargains. In short...check it out!

Yelp
This was my first time at Footscray Market. I was initially a bit sceptical (wasn't the greatest building in the world for example) but once inside, I loved it. I visited because I wanted to compare the prices of fruit and vegies (and seafood/meat) for a budgeting blog. The fruit and vegies were so much cheaper than my local Woolies!
