Here are the best restaurants, cafes, and bars to eat and drink in East Lansing near Michigan State University | Eater Detroit

"It is all about crepes at this small but sweet place on M.A.C Ave. Launching in 2014 at Lansing City Market, For Crepe Sake relocated downtown to serve locals and MSU students sweet and savory crepes. Sweet crepes include the Campfire — topped with marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate glaze — while the savory side features creative flavor combos like the Orchard — prepared with ham, cinnamon apple butter, aged white cheddar, and caramelized onions. In addition, customers can select from a variety of Belgian waffles topped high with fruit, sweet sauces like caramel or Nutella, or even à la mode with a scoop of vanilla ice cream." - Julianne Noye

Our first visit this morning and so glad we popped in! Excellent, friendly customer service; delicious breakfast crepes; fantastic coffee. What more do you want? Some of the light fixtures could use a cleaning and drop ceiling tiles replaced, but otherwise the space is soothing and takes me back to European cafes. We will be back for more, soon!

This is our second time coming to For Crepe Sake and it was just as wonderful as the first. My friends recommended the cinnamon roll crepe which was delicious, though a tad sweet for my taste. It is definitely more of a dessert crepe. We also got the fruit tart crepe which was exactly what we were looking for. The tangy lemon balances well with the sweet cream while the fresh fruit offers a relief and keeps it from becoming overwhelmingly sweet. This place is always clean, and it didn’t matter if we came here near open or during peak hours. The staff is friendly and our crepes came quickly. Overall recommend for both couples and friends.

I had a Veggie Crepe to go. One of the biggest things for me was that the crepe was still warm when I got back to eat it. The ingredients were incredibly flavorful and fresh tasting as well (the sundried tomato pesto is to die for). I highly recommend this spot if you're looking for a delicious and refreshing crepe. Can't wait to try my next sweet treat here! Side note, the hash browns were perfect! Crunchy on the outside, salty and fluffy on the inside. Thank you, FCS!

Google
Very cute contemporary place, and the breakfast crepes are Amazing. They even do latte art, and they have benches near the front windows, it feels like you're sitting in an NYC cafe. I was hungry so I forgot to take a pic before we got a couple bites.

I visited For Crepe Sake on a Sunday afternoon. The hours posted on their website, Google, and FB do not match. This was confusing. I had a Lavender iced latte, blueberry goat sweet crepe, and classic savory crepe. The latte was good. The blueberry goat sweet crepe was okay; it had an - overpowering sweet taste. The classic savory wasn't great. It was very salty, and the mustard flavor overtook the flavor of ham and cheese. The atmosphere was okay, however the ceilings are very dirty. The music they had on that day to me was quite loud. I was expecting more of a cafe experience. The lady who assisted me was kind and explained the menu well. The drink and food came out quickly. I am gluten-free, not by choice, and they upcharged for this (not an issue). The cost overall is pricey, and I don't think the food was that great for the cost.

We visited around an hour before closing and the restaurant was empty. We felt hurried since the staff said they wanted to close early, so we were there for a total of 20 minutes, including wait time. The crepes were great - especially the savory vegetarian crepe with sundried tomato pesto inside.

Google
We stayed at a hotel near by and walked over for breakfast. This was a highlight of our trip - my son said it was the best breakfast he’s ever had! Good food, good service! A/C was broken and the workers did their best to keep it cool (I can’t imagine how hot it had to be behind the grill, poor team handled it like it didn’t even phase them!) Hopefully the business owner fixed it up for all the wonderful workers they have there!!

Yelp
Visited on a Saturday morning. Only customers; place was dead when we showed up. Attempted to order three different dishes: they were out of bananas, chocolate ganache, and plum jam. Service was quick. Food was delicious. A bit pricy for three dishes and a coffee. Place was clean, upscale, and welcoming.

Aaron K.

Yelp
I had breakfast here while in town for a conference, and I enjoyed my crepe so much that I came back the next day and got a different crepe. However, I had to sit outside both times because there was no air conditioning.

Sarah F.

Yelp
For crepe sake indeed. The hashbrowns online are such a catfish to the one received. I otherwise love this place!

Yelp
Nestled in the heart of downtown East Lansing is the most perfect place for a tasty quick bite that won't weigh you down. For Crepe Sake is a delightful and adorable little spot. You can find pay-by-plate street parking or two parking structures not far from their front door. Even if you have to park further away a stroll through downtown East Lansing is always worth it! There are clean bathrooms with warm water to wash your hands as well. Seating for about 50 people. They offer savory and sweet crepes with a gluten free option as well! We settled on splitting a savory and sweet crepe selection: The Classic and The Cinnamon Roll. The Classic was full of flavor from the mustard, chives and ham! And, the Cinnamon Roll had great flavor but could have used a bit more filling as it wasn't nearly as "stuffed" as the other crepe. They carry a Sumatra coffee with happens to be my fav and it paired nicely with the sweet crepe! I will return to try out different crepes or stick with the same!

Yelp
The crepes are delicious but it took extremely long for us to get the crepes at least 30 minutes. It's not a huge place either so I didn't think it was a lot happening for it to take that long. I'm not sure if it was a staffing issue or just not enough machines to make crepes. I had the berry Nutella crepe and added lemon curd. I would return but next time I'm hoping that it won't take that long for a crepe.

Yelp
Really delicious crepes, but not the coffee. Love to eat here when visiting my favorite MSU student.

Yelp
Very very good gluten-free crepes, and the drinks are alright too (although i got some crunchy mocha gunk at the bottom of my latte) but it's very overpriced. A breakfast for two and drinks should not cost literally $50. That said, it was a delicious, moist, and well-made crepe, so I will be returning. Despite the price, I would recommend trying it out at least once. A decent choice for a once-in-a-while breakfast treat. Service was slow the previous time I've visited, though. Seems I got lucky this morning based on other reviews.

Yelp
Staff was friendly but placed an order at 10:14am online. Said it would be ready at 10:40. I go in about 10:45 they tell me the ticket hasn't even come through, to which I say I ordered at 10:14. they check their system and find my order, says it will be about 5 minutes and that they will start it. 20 minutes go by and I see them make probably 8 different orders that go out in that time. I go ask how much longer for mine, they say 5 mins. I go sit down and THEN see them begin to make it. So all that time after my order is over 40 mins late they don't make the order a priority and continue to take new orders and make them in front of mine. it was crazy, and they are so insanely priced anyways it was not worth it in the slightest

Yelp
The cause were fresh and very good. The wait tube was close to 45 minutes. The staff was friendly and apologized for the wait to each table. Unfortunately created that time to cook, so this is expected. But still too long of a wait. Inside was clean with clean restrooms. Would go back, but not tops on the list of things to do.

Neha V.

Yelp
Really beautiful and clean tiny cafe! The place itself is decorated really nicely and professional. A lot of options on the menu and the crepe are HUGE which is great. The savory crepes are good as well as the sweet crepes. Super nice breakfast spot if you want nice good crepes!

Yelp
I've visited this place a handful of times now and have waited an hour for my food every time. It was not busy at all today and yet it took an HOUR. One worker was on their phone, another in the back, and one other making all the crepes. I don't think they staff enough people or they don't properly train them to manage high volume situations. However, my main issue was how the staff brought food out to customers who had ordered WELL after myself. When I asked the staff why it was taking so long and why they got their orders first, they LIED to me and told me they had arrived first. Nope, they didn't. I watched them walk in, order, and sit down well after me. Also, one of the employees who backed the other employee up literally had just arrived and started working... As for the atmosphere, it's not amazing but it's fine. You can tell it's very cheap. I think they could use better seating arrangements and lower the volume of the speakers as the noise was pouring into my ear. With the service being poor, the atmosphere being subpar, and the food being pretty decent, I just don't understand the crepes being $20 each. (Referring to a Google review) I'd also like to add that the owner had a disrespectful response to Sharon Joy's review. Very disappointed in their approach to receiving meaningful, constructive feedback. Being petty/sassy is not necessary. I think their response shows their lack of care as a business.

Jaelle L.

Yelp
Delicious gluten-friendly crepes! I highly recommend the sweet lemon crepe (the one with lemon curd) and the seasonal Chai Spice Crepe. They are both delicious. This place is rarely busy when I come. The decor is always very cute too :) definitely my favorite breakfast and brunch spot in east lansing

Yelp
I love crepe restaurants. This place is mediocre at best. Plus extremely expensive. It is based on the quick serve model. You walk up, place your order, get a number, but on your table, they bring it out to you. All of the servers are very friendly, you get very little interaction with them. Food. It's good. Not great, but good. Factor in the price, it should be great. Overall, it's ok, and very expensive.

Yelp
I had the vegan cinnamon sugar crepe and it was delicious! When I go back, I think I'll order some fruit to go with it. I went on a Sunday morning and the service was fast and the atmosphere was calm. The staff was also really nice. I had ordered a vegan version of a crepe that wasn't vegan-friendly originally, so they found me at my table to clarify.

Yelp
Would be 4 stars, except last time we visited the service was awful. The store wasn't particularly busy, though none of the empty tables were cleaned. The employee took our order, bussed half our table, and left half of someone else's dirty dishes there. After 15 minutes the dirty dishes were still there, and we had no silverware or water. We had to ask for these things and every time he came by/personally forgot anything he just said "we're short-staffed". Like I understood that the first time, but maybe have someone wait 2 minutes and instead of taking their order fully clean our table! We had dirty dishes on the end the entire time which was gross and ruined the dining experience. I don't mind waiting longer for a crepe (we waited over 30 min, which was fine) but I don't want to wait next to someone else's dirty dishes with no water.

Yelp
TLDR: Best crepes in East Lansing Look usually crepes are not my go to for when i'm hungry no have i ever craved a savory crepe. But after coming here i really have become a fan of all crepes. You want something sweet come here, something Savory come here it does not disappoint. The staff was very welcoming and let us know how long the food was going to take and loved the cute little cafe vibe that was going on. If you want to try good crepes you gotta come here!

Yelp
The pictures are of our half eaten Crepes. The staff were friendly. They warned us about the 30 minute wait time but delivered early. The interior was laid out well. The hunchback was well made and tasty. The dried tomato paste added a nice zing. The cinnamon sugar crepe had some crystallized sugar in it with a side of whipped cream. My child really enjoyed. Th France crepe was just fine according to my other child. The Lemmon crepe was a bit too tender. In the future I may order a crepe cooked to golden. I requested more powdered sugar which helped.
google avatar

Kaileigh H.

Yelp
Crepes were good, tea was great. Fun little spot for a sweet treat. Service was a little slow but not upset as they were training new employees. This place is great if you are vegan as they offer a large variety of vegan options. My friend was very impressed.

Alexandra V.

Yelp
Loved this place! They have great gluten free crepes and flavors, the only downside is they don't have a lot of seating. If you are looking for a dine in breakfast option, consider going to this place during the week when it is less busy. The ambiance is good. Their prices are higher so keep this in mind. I have also ordered from them online for Valentine's day, they were very considerate and when I made note to write a message on the box, they did so and added swirls and hearts on top of the crepes- super cute!

Kaeler B.

Yelp
If you want to eat before the sun burns out do not go here. The staff was not very friendly or accommodating in making things right after we waited an hour for our food just because they made a mistake.
google avatar

Linda N.

Yelp
The food is what I return for, over and over. The variety of crepe fillings is more than adequate to my adventurous tastes. My girlfriend and I go together so we can order 2 savory crepes and 2 dessert crepes, and share all between us. The Tuscan Crepe and Hunchback Crepe are our go-to savories. As far as delish sweet crepes, you can't go wrong here, but our top 2 are Brie & Jam Crepe and Bananas & Caramel Crepe. There is almost always a long line to eat here. The ambience is not romantic or Parisian, but good for an American breakfast diner! Cooks and servers are a bit rushed unless you hit a time when there isn't a crush, but they are friendly and doing their best. Smile back and bon appétit!

Brigida F.

Yelp
Food was fabulous but I was really impressed with the ladies who worked there. Kind of, friendly and filled the whole restaurant with a welcoming and cozy atmosphere! Well Done I will be back with friends!

Yelp
I love this place!!! It's our go to breakfast date spot! It's super cute inside, a very modern but chill environment. The crepes are so delicious and the lattes are beautiful. Though a bit pricey, you are definitely not left hungry.

Yelp
Omg, YUM. I want to try them all. I had one of the vegetarian ones with avocado, basil, tomatoes, spinach and cheese. It was the most delicious vegetarian thing I've ever eaten. Everything was so fresh and perfectly seasoned and cooked. The avocado tasted like they have a magical Michigan avocado tree growing in their basement and they picked it just for you. You walk in, grab a menu, order in the back, find a seat, they bring you deliciousness and graciously take your plate once you've licked it. Order coffee, they give you a mug, you get it, it's delicious. I was on my own and actually found a friendly but not too friendly studying silent partner to share a table with. You get peeks into the kitchen where goddesses are working hard for you, making perfect crepes. ‍‍ If you're ever in Lansing, go to here.

Yelp
Love the ambience in their new location! Very modern and clean, great decor. Great presentation of crepes, nice plating. However, flavor is lacking. The have delicious crepes, but the sweet crepes are way too sweet. I'd suggest getting a savory crepe that has something sweet with it so it isn't too overpowering. The cinnamon sugar crepe is not it, it was just toppings over a plain crepe, too dry and bland. Their cinnamon roll crepe was delicious, has the same cinnamon sugar but with cream cheese, pecans, and caramel. Lots of flavor, but extremely sweet. They need to find a bit more balance in flavors. Limit the menu to make sure the ones that are offered are really good! Friendly staff, cool to see so many young students working here. Loved this place so much when it was in Lansing by the capitol but now that it is in East Lansing and for the students, I feel the quality has changed. Still a big fan of this place, but I was sad it wasn't as good as I remembered
google avatar

Susan M.

Yelp
So I had a club type of crepe with avocado and pesto (the Hunchback) which was recommended from the server. It was delicious, the pesto tasted fresh made, but it was huge and filling and didn't leave enough room for dessert (the real reason for the visit). The I'll admit I'm a traditionalist when it comes to crepes but we tried the cinnamon roll crepe and it was pretty good. The pecans added a lil crunch which I need. Over all, stop in, you won't regret it.

M M.

Yelp
The crêpes here are really good and but a heads up that when it's busy, it might be a longer wait since the place is on the smaller side. The crêpes are also really filling so make sure you don't have a full meal before coming.
google avatar

Alicia S.

Yelp
The waffles are to die for and in my group of 4, everyone loved their crepe so much that we want two days in a row!

William F.

Yelp
Crepes were tasty, service was quick! Sunday morning wait not long at all. I'll be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Let's just say opening weekend posed some challenges for this established business, which surprised me because they are not new, just in a new location. We ordered 5 to go crepes. There was one order of two crepes ahead of us and no one came after us. It fully took 25 mins to make them. Despite there being several employees and 2 crepe stations, one employee worked on them one at a time. They need to look at a binder full of recipes to figure out how to make them. The Brie and jam is TO DIE FOR and the France was delectable. The banana and caramel (what caramel???) was more like banana and syrup. Something made that crepe wet but there was zero caramel flavor which made this crepe extremely bland. Oh and the bananas were ROTTEN. The "sides" that come with the savory crepes were thrown into the to go container which results in a wilted pile of lettuce or strawberries and bananas covered in sun dried tomato pesto. Come on! Put your sides in a separate container or buy containers that have compartments. This is not their first rodeo and so the disappointment was surprising.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Best meal I've had in Lansing! I'm gluten and dairy free but they have vegan crepes and vegan cheese. I got the Hunchback and it was amazing.
google avatar

Zoe K.

Yelp
Stopped by this place two days in a row for breakfast, the food is absolutely delicious. The first day I got their French crepe and it was so sweet! A friend got their Brie and jam crepe and the sweet to savory ratio was perfect. The second day I got the berry and lemon waffle and it was so good! The berries were sweet and full of flavor and the lemon compote cut through it with a sharp tang. Easily my favorite thing on the menu. 10/10, would definitely recommend.
google avatar

Liam H.

Yelp
I wanted to try the food so bad, but was denied being able to order three times. The first time I tried, they said they were backed up and would taking orders in 10-15 minutes. I wait in the restaurant for about 15 minutes with my brother and his girlfriend who placed their order a minute before we attempted to order and when I go back to the counter they tell me that it's gonna be another ten minutes before I can place my order. I continued to walk around for twenty minutes exploring East Lansing to return to the restaurant still unable to order with them saying it will be 5 minutes. I feel bad about reviewing a place that I didn't eat at, but I tried to pay 30 dollars for two crepes three times and was denied. I'm sure the food is delicious, but there are some unfortunate business practices standing in the way.

Grace G.

Yelp
Waited 50 minutes for our food. Nothing came out of the kitchen for over a hour. Would not recommend and would not recommend

H O.

Yelp
Very great place! The service is a little mid but overall the ambiance is wonderful and food is fine. They did mess up a few times on my order after explicit expression of allergies against certain foods; however, quickly remade my food afterward!
google avatar

Bianca S.

Yelp
This place is so cute and the crepes were yummy. I got the cinnamon roll crepe, and ask for a side of Nutella. The icing was really sweet but still really good. Miss book got the France crepe and she finished the whole plate which is rare! And the iced coffee with caramel was yummylicious
google avatar

Ayesha F.

Yelp
Great crepes. Due to being short staffed, they only had carry out available. By the time we got home the whip cream had melted and crepes were soggy. Am sure they would have been great if we were dining in.
google avatar

Liza T.

Yelp
I would say that the food is pretty good but i wouldn't say that it's good enough to justify the cost. The employees were honestly kind of rude. But overall it's a cute place and worth a visit if you're not paying.
google avatar

Jill V.

Yelp
We visited for the first time this morning. The space is lovely and the food was delicious. The portions are fairly small for the price.
google avatar

Ree T.

Yelp
I hadn't had a crepe in years and in the past they have all been sweet. I decided to be adventurous and go for a savory vegan crepe. I was a little nervous about it because whenever you say vegan they have to remove ingredients. This however was delicious! This place is about 15 minutes from my job and I almost went back. The crepe was filled with fresh veggies and vegan cheese. It cut easily with the fork and was scrumptious. I will definitely be going back.
google avatar

Keri R.

Yelp
We actually came here twice, because we enjoyed it so much. We tried the Bananas & Caramel crepes and the Orchard crepes (ham, apples, cheese, and apple butter). I don't know which one was better. Both were delicious.

Megan G.

Yelp
I understand that a lot of workers are new but they need to get it together. Waited 40 minutes for a table when there was seemingly nobody in there. Waited at least 40 minutes for food. People who came in after us got theirs first and the server told them "I accidentally made the wrong ticket first so you guys got yours extra fast!" Crepes were good but do not for any reason get a smoothie. Literally tasted like water could not drink it. None of the tables were clean and had to ask for silverware. Good luck to this place.

Lauren B.

Yelp
Took 25 minutes to start making my crepe with a couple and 1 person in front of me. Then gave 2 people that were behind me in line their crepes (1 savory and 1 sweet) within 5 minutes of them being there. There was little to no communication to why it was taking that long. The ambiance of the restaurant is nice, but I won't be returning after the poor service and neglect.

William F.

Yelp
Food was great. Nice place , good service. Well worth coming back. Great presentation on the plates
google avatar

Leanne B.

Yelp
The food was okay and the staff very nice. But, the floor and tables needed some serious cleaning. Floor in the dining area was filthy with dirt and bugs. We were there on a weekday morning. Doubt if we will go back.
google avatar

Tyra N.

Yelp
It was more than I bargained for. The infused water is enough to keep you here for an afternoon reading or people watching. The open café layout flatteringly mimics a petit cafe in an imagined Parisian town. The tables were large though and the chairs inviting. The food prep assembly line behind the counter is open to entice onlookers for entertainment and seduction. The menu is full and selections are both specialty as well as à la carte. Take advantage of the special combinations and add where you like, they give a good base of flavor to begin. Your crepe will be made fresh nothing from a freezer or warmer. The presentation of my brie, prosciutto, bacon, spinach and kale crepe was picturesque but underwhelming compared to the taste. On the outside the folded triangle looked tepid, snack sized and teasing. In my mouth it was comforting warmth, filling and appetizing. The greens were nicely wilted and no bitterness lingering, the brie married them with the delicate prosciutto and bacon. I'd have ordered another out of our gluttony had I no plans or restraint. I'd would have enjoyed more greens. I will gladly return for brunch with a friend and maybe wine in my bag.

Megan P.

Yelp
Loved the food and great customer service! It does take a minute for the food to come out but I've always been satisfied with my order.

Jordyn B.

Yelp
I've heard about this place before so wanted to give it a try! Walked in and it smelled delicious so I was excited. They were not busy but the service was extremely slow. The only guy ahead of me waited 15+ minutes for a coffee and that's it. There was one other table being waited on but the rest of the staff (although they only had 3 total) seemed to be just standing around. I am still waiting for my latte and hope it meets the hype! I would love to try the food here but not sure about the wait. The environment was so cute though!

Jacob H.

Yelp
Honestly one of the friendliest places I've ever been. The food was delicious and I got a lavender cappuccino and that was wonderful too. If you're ever in the area definitely give this little cafe a chance.
