For The Culture Brewing Brings Diversity to Houston’s Growing Craft Beer Scene | Eater Houston

"Majority African-American-owned and perhaps Houston’s first brewery owned by brewers of color, For The Culture Brewing Company was founded by co‑founders Jonathan Brown and Carl Roaches Jr., who have spent the past six months serving beers at pop-ups around town—mostly alumni tailgates, private events, and weddings—and giving their brews away for free. I learned their homebrewing kicked into high gear around Hurricane Harvey—“we were goofing off in the kitchen, underestimating the storm,” Roaches recalls—and they moved from a 15‑gallon half‑barrel system to planning a permanent taproom and brewery inside the loop using a 15‑barrel brewing system, aiming to open sometime in 2019 with three co‑owners, all men of color. Their current lineup includes a blonde ale, hibiscus and elder flower ale, brown ale, strong golden ale, IPA, and milk porter, and the venture is explicitly about monetizing their hobby while increasing diversity in Houston’s craft beer scene; Roaches cites Brewers Association figures showing craft beer drinkers are about 85% caucasian and 70% male and stresses the need to reach people and women who may not have been exposed to beer as a beverage of choice, noting historically women were among the first industrial brewmasters. Fans can follow For The Culture Brewing on social media for pop‑up dates and updates on the forthcoming permanent location." - Alaena Hostetter

Cool taproom! Free WiFi good people, good prices. Two TVs and a large selection of beer. If you mixed an Irish pub with a warehouse taproom this is what you get! Super comfy vibes! Bring your friends

Google
Great variety of beers. Staff is incredible and very attentive to each guest. Great open space with 3 TVs (perfect for a college football Saturday). Even had a couple food trucks just outside to choose from. I’ll be back often!

Google
Great beer! I had a flight and a couple tastes of others and they were all really good. I've been telling all my friends about this place. I'll definitely return. There's no food but you're welcome to bring your own.

These guys have a fantastic collection of quality ales and lagers and not too many IPA's. This is a proper brewery. 👌

Yelp
This was a nice vibe. I came on a HBCU game night and enjoyed myself. The beers were pretty good as well and the staff were very friendly. It was a little difficult to locate when driving in but a nice little spot to check out Black Owned Business is a plus as well!

Yelp
We love this place and the beer! Definitely will be back. Don't let the outside (former Sherwin Williams paint store) fool you, Ovinnik is great! Give them a try!

Yelp
This is a pretty unassuming brewery, there are a few signs outside that signify that beer is served on the grounds but otherwise you might miss it while driving around! This place definitely gave old school brewery vibes - local murals on the inside, t-shirts with cool logos for sale, simple seating, and big fans instead of AC. Their beers pack a punch and are unique - two different breweries serve beer here - I tried the VooDoo Kitty - I enjoyed the complex flavor although it was a bit on the sweet side. They have some great light beers on tap that are good for the summer heat. The day we went they had live synthesizer music which was cool! Our bartender was attentive and knowledgeable about the beers. Will check this place out again!

Yelp
This is a combined review for Ovinnik and For The Culture on Saturday night 3/9. Stopped here before a concert downtown. The beer, service and prices were all great. You can't beat two breweries under one roof. Would definitely stop by again.

Yelp
Legit brewery, good mix of beers and top swag. Pup friendly - water bowls and treats. Looks closed if you drive by - head to the back.
