Forestiere’s Underground Gardens in Fresno, California

"Hand-carved over roughly four decades by Sicilian immigrant Baldassare Forestiere, this 10-acre subterranean complex of rooms, corridors, grottoes, patios and garden courts was excavated beginning in 1906 using only simple tools such as a pick, shovel and wheelbarrow. Situated about 20 feet below ground, the inventive design allows citrus trees and grapevines to thrive in an otherwise inhospitable Central Valley climate, producing oranges, lemons, grapefruits, kumquats, loquats, date palms and cascading wine grapes—many of which can be harvested from ground level and are sometimes sold in the gift shop. Recognized as a California Historical Landmark in 1979 and listed on the National Register of Historic Sites, the fragile, historically significant site is open to the public only via guided, hour-long tours (March–December) that involve gentle walking, with an accessible alternative route for wheelchair users; advance booking is recommended, tickets start at around $25, and same-day spots occasionally become available. Visitors are frequently astonished by the scale and ingenuity of the project, which stands as a testament to one man’s perseverance and creative problem-solving." - Iona Brannon Iona Brannon Iona Brannon is a journalist with a love for food and travel. Fabulous Fruit Trees and Where To Find Them

"The Underground Gardens are the life-long devotion and hobby of Baldassare Forestiere, a Sicilian immigrant and self-taught artist and builder who came to America in 1901 to escape the iron rule of his wealthy father and pursue his own dreams. The Gardens are a subterranean 3-level complex of patios, grottoes, and garden courts interconnected with passageways that encircle a four-room living quarters. After arriving in Fresno, California, Forestiere purchased 80 acres of land that he later found to be unsuitable for farming due to the presence of many inches of hardpan just below the meager topsoil. He discovered that a layer of mostly impermeable clay was found about 10 feet below the hardpan, so he decided to begin digging to open up underground rooms with circular holes above to allow a variety of plants to take root in large planters. He also realized that by going underground he could escape the brutal heat of Fresno’s summers and avoid spending his few day-job earnings on conventional housing. Though his later building ideas may have been affected by his very first job in America—helping to dig some of Boston’s earliest subway tunnels—Forestiere patterned his underground world after the ancient catacombs, which he so admired as a boy. Arches and passageways dominate the underground landscape, while the stonework (crafted from chunks of the excavated hardpan) provides stability and beauty. But unlike the darkness of the Old World’s catacombs, Forestiere designed naturally lit courtyards, driveways, even a glass-bottomed aquarium (now not in use) below which he could sit and read. No plans were put on paper; each room and passageway originated in Forestiere’s mind as he went. With the simple tools of a farmer—a pick, a shovel, a wheelbarrow, a dragged scraper, and eventually two mules—the determined immigrant dug, chipped, and carved his personal monument to ingenuity for 40 years in his spare time. By the time he was 44 years old, he had excavated and planted over 10 acres. But Forestiere’s genius did not stop there. Incredibly, Forestiere planted multiple varieties of fruit-bearing plants at different underground levels. Oranges, lemons, grapefruits—many on a single tree—as well as more unusual varieties like kumquat, loquat, jujube, strawberry, quince, and dates, which could be easily plucked while standing on the surface and simply bending down. Wine and table grapes also grace this sanctuary and dangle lusciously in great clumps everywhere—truly an oasis in a modern-day desert of pavement." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
I had such a great time visiting the Forestiere Underground Gardens. The only tricky part was finding the entrance because of some construction, but parking was super easy — free street parking right out front. We bought our tickets when we arrived, and they do offer a military discount, which was nice. The tour itself was about 45 minutes to an hour. It’s a small group tour; for us, it was just my friend, myself, and one other person, which made it feel more personal and easier to enjoy. Since it is an underground garden, some of the spaces are a bit smaller, so the small group size definitely helps. There are bathrooms available, and it was a little chilly underground, so I’d recommend bringing something cozy to stay warm. Overall, it was a beautiful and really unique experience. I definitely recommend going — and I’ll be going back again!

My last visit was in 1981 and our tour on October 23, 2025 was very enjoyable. So fascinating to see and learn about. We purchased a few limes and pomegranates at the gift shop. Tour lasted an hour and was extremely informative. Parking was alongside near the hotel. Will definitely return again in the future.

We took our 8-year-old son and granddaughter to the Forestiere Underground Gardens, and it was such a fascinating experience! It truly feels like stepping back in time. The craftsmanship and creativity are unbelievable — it’s amazing what one person with a vision and determination can accomplish. Even though it was a hot day, it was much cooler underground, which made the tour even more enjoyable. Highly recommend for families — interesting, educational, and unlike anything else!

Google
Amazing! We were looking for something to do as we transition from Sequoia National Park to Yosemite and this was perfect. It’s an amazing place, with a great story of resilience. You’ll love it! Stopped at Max’s Bistro and Bar for lunch after to have an incredible Italian meal to celebrate Baldasare Forestiere heritage and creation! This was an unexpected highlight of our trip to CA.

Google
This was my first time touring the garden. After living many decades in Fresno and The Central Valley combined I don’t know why I have never taken the time to tour this beautiful and interesting place. It is certainly a gem. The staff was professional yet friendly. They welcomed us as soon as we walked in the door. The tour started promptly at the reservation time. Our tour guide was Morgan. She has a friendly voice yet projection was adequate; therefore, she was easy to understand. She allowed an appropriate time to look without being rushed, yet not too long where we were standing around staring at each other. The story is amazing and she never portrayed not knowing the facts. She easily answered the questions the group had. I would definitely go back again and refer others. I can’t wait to share this place with my family and friends and I hope I am lucky enough to have Morgan again as my tour guide.

Google
What an amazing historical sight to visit with family and friends! An amazing 1hr tour full of delight and intrigue, as you see the inside of one man's mind who knew no bounds! You may pass by it frequently on Shaw and yet it's hidden in plain sight!

Google
This is Fresno's most unique attraction that draws tourists from all around the country. The underground building is a work of art created over the span of a life of the Italian immigrant Baltazar Forrestier. Every time I come here, I get inspired by this artist, although he did not consider himself that. He was ahead of his time! He created something that inspires you to be a better human being simply by observing what one man can accomplish when applying tenacity to inspiration. I highly recommend you to visit this "museum" and see if it prods you to become a better version of yourself.

Google
I've driven by for about a year thinking I wanted to make time to visit. We'll, I finally did and wish I hadn't waited so long. This place is unbelievably unique. One man who spent 40 years building a dream. The guide Melinda (I think that was her name) was knowledgeable, friendly, and did a great job of keeping everyone engaged.

Yelp
Loved this tour of Forestiere, who spent the majority of his life creating and building an underground ecosystem out of pure imagination, willpower and grit. He didn't have a lot, but I'm so impressed how much he accomplished. He dug the tunnels all by himself and grafted trees in the ecosystem to bear fruit. The tunnels are over 100 years old and I'm glad it is now a historical site being preserved by the family. Was also able to buy some pomegranate and limes to support. The tour of the tunnels is for an hour and the staff was knowledgeable and friendly. Purchase your ticket online and make sure to come on time as they start the tour on the dot.

Yelp
Amazing engineering of an underground structure. I can't even imaging hand digging this giant hole/maze for 40 plus years. This man was ingenious and innovative in his construction. I wish I could have seen the enormity of his entire creation before he passed. This is quite the gem in Fresno. Don't blink or you will miss it. There is no onsite parking, you must find a spot on the street, either in front or around the corner. We walked up and lucked out with space on the 2 pm tour. I highly recommend jumping online and making reservations. Cost is $25 per adult, a price well worth the 1.5 hours. Our tour guide was amazing. Her love and exuberance for the place truly showed in her energy on the tour. I had a little bit of a coughing fit and she so sweetly brought me a water.

Yelp
Pros: The best guided tour I have had (our guide was Latieshka who was excellent and really elevated the experience). A unique landmark in an unexpected location. I recommend a stop if you are in or going through Fresno. Cons: Street parking only was slightly inconvenient (and somewhat confusing as the parking is right next to the large parking lot associated with the gardens which was empty and locked).

Yelp
Buy ticket online $25 each and $3.50 fee. We visited the place when the temperature outside is 80+, however the underground is cooler, we even have to put on a light jacket. The tour guide was great and very helpful, she shared fascinating stories about the garden's history. We were amazed by the work of one single man - B Forestiere. Overall, this was an interesting trip. 4 stars because the parking is limited, we have to do street parking on a busy street.

Yelp
Makenna (spelling?) was a wonderful tour guide with extensive knowledge about the history of this facility. My husband and I enjoyed learning about this fascinating man, Baldasera Forester.

Yelp
On Sunday before my husband and I flew home from Fresno, we stopped at the Forestiere Underground Gardens, a California historic site. What was once an 80? 40? acre property now has between 5-10 acres that haven't been sold / taken via eminent domain that has been preserved as the underground gardens. In the early 1900's, second born son of a Sicilian citrus farmer Baldassare Forestiere made his way to Boston to work digging underground subway tunnels. He saved his money hoping to one day start his own citrus groves as his older brother was to be the sole inheritor of their father's groves in Sicily. He saved his money and bought a plot of land in Fresno, only to find extremely hot summer weather and rocky, dense "hardpan" soil - terrible for growing anything. Between 1906 until his death in 1946, Baldassare took a pickaxe and hand dug 10 acres of underground rooms, some with skylights, to both live in and to plant all manner of fruit trees. The trees were mostly shaded with only indirect sunlight underground, keeping the plants cool and thriving. As the trees grew larger, the very tops of the trees were accessible for harvesting at street level. Baldassare never married, never had children and spent his days digging new rooms every day after he got home from his other jobs working on railroads and other hard labor jobs. Baldassare's younger brother and his wife saved the property after his death and their family worked to get it registered as a California Historic Landmark. Only about acres are still managed, maintained and owned by the family, while other parts of the tunnels run under the street and even a nearby Starbucks. While it felt a little pricey at $25 per person, our tour guide Rhanda was very knowledgeable and it was great that the tours are limited to small groups. Visited: July 2025

Yelp
We were running late for our tour and called ahead and they were able to move us to a tour 15min after our initial reservation, it was perfect. The tour guide was so fun and knowledgeable. What a unique place!

Yelp
This place it's beautiful. It has a story of a man who started digging and building this underground garden. It is unique here in Fresno. You have to check on line for tickets and times. It is great for walking and taking your tourist family and friends. There is not a lot of parking out side this place. You have to find your self one close to it. There are some trees that were planted underground and the man had to make a hole On top of the tree so it gets the sunlight. He had to plan this accordingly. It is a rare Gem. Highly recommend. They also have food trucks outside. If you get hungry.

Yelp
The garden truly is a blessing to Fresno,. It is gorgeous with so much history. Thank you Maka, for making our tour special

Yelp
This tour enlightened us on the historical significance of the underground lifestyle rather than it being a botanical exploration. All tours required us to have tickets prior and they do sell out. There was street parking available and there was a gift shop to roam around prior to the tour. The tour started promptly but they did allow late comers to join in later. Our tour guide was incredible and she was knowledgeable about the history and architecture of the underground passageways. There was a lot of religious symbolism incorporated in the way the trees were grown and rooms where set up. Due to the underground nature, the temperature was noticeably cooler so I would bring a jacket depending on the day. Although children under 4 were free, this experience seemed more suitable for older children and adults. We were expected to stay as a group so don't expect to be allowed to roam about. Art and history buffs would love this tour and most of the enjoyment came from the explained history and context from our guide. The tour took over an hour, ending in a room connected to the gift shop. I wouldn't approach this tour expecting luscious greenery but with the expectation of appreciating the historical context of Fresno.

Yelp
This historic site had been on my bucket list for decades and was elated that we were finally going to get to visit this truly one of a kind California attraction. Our tour guide, Carolyn, was amazing and a 5-star ambassdor for Fresno County and the Gardens. Her knowledge of the history of Sicilian immigrant Baldassare Forestiere and his magical world exceeded all our expectations. Despite the difference in temperatures above vs. below ground, those warm Fresno days raise those underground temps. When possible, plan to an early tour to avoid the heat.

Yelp
Omg stay home and watch the YouTube video and amazing life story of the founder. Going to the location is not recommended. They have 2 surly staff people at a bench that randomly decide to close early due to heat when it's 90 degrees outside and cloudy!! There's no parking and lots of road construction going on. So you're stuck with the couple spots of street parking and a sign telling you to lockup your car and hide your belongings. Sorry for the long novel but we drove 2 hours to be here when Yelp and google said it was open only to be told there are no tours. I said that's ok can we pay $25 each to walk under the orange trees for 5 minutes. Response: "No come back when you book an appointment ". We don't want to stay here past our shift that ends in an hour. Roflmao - great representation of the spirit of the founder

They did an amazing job during the tour, it was really engaging and informative. It truly is a beautiful hidden gem.

Yelp
We had an amazing tour with our tour guide, Kai. We learned a lot about Baldassare Forestiere and how he had dug acres of underground rooms and passageways and grafted so many trees. He did so much hard labor, and sadly, only a small piece was preserved. It's a really amazing place to visit.

Very interesting and enjoyable visit. Our guide,Carolyn very well-versed for the tour and provided some well written information Highly recommend a stop at the gardens when you have a free hour or two.

Yelp
What a neat place! We had purchased our tickets online ahead of time but were running a bit late so we called in and they were able to get us in with the next tour group. We parked along the street outside of the gardens and checked in with the staff. The guided tour is an hour long and very thorough. One of our group members was in a wheelchair and staff was very helpful taking her to an alternate route to meet us below for the tour. It was amazing to see the level of work put into this place and even some of the original trees! I was impressed with the grafting and how much fruit was on the trees. A must see if you're in the area! There is a little gift shop area at the end with souvenirs too.

Yelp
I visited the gardens for a family Easter day trip! Our tour guide was very personable and friendly! Remember to book a tour in advance! It's such a unique historic landmark and it was interesting to learn about early central Californian history. It's not necessarily just a garden its actually an underground home built by Baldasare Forestiere--and its still a family business. (the main attraction is underground and above ground there isn't much to walk or see). Spring was probably the the best time to visit! But my favorite part was the easter egg hunt with eggies scattered all over with cute toys and candies in them! The workers at the gift shop were also so sweet. It's def a cool spot if traveling up the 99..or if you're a history nerd like me

Yelp
My sister and her husband were visiting from out of state this past weekend. We decided to take them to the Gardens, so they could marvel in the wonder this site has to offer. As this was another in the many visits we've made over our lifetime in the Fresno area, we came away with a renewed appreciation of just how amazing this place is. It's as if we saw something new during our visit... maybe, we just saw the Gardens in a whole new perspective... Anyhow, our tour guide, Letishka, (hopefully I have spelled her name correctly) was absolutely fantastic and we deeply appreciate the hospitality and attention to detail she brought to the tour. She was Amazing! I highly recommend you consider making the time to pay a visit to this wonderfully unique place. You will not regret your decision.

Yelp
Wow! What a great experience. We had the one-hour guided tour. Once we left the triple-digit heat of the surface-of-the-sun Fresno in August and went underground, we were transformed into a different world created in the early part of the last century by a Sicilian man with a great vision. I could t imagine one man doing all this. It should be on everyone's CA tourist bucket list. Who woulda thunk it? Right on Shaw near 99. Parking is a challenge with the road construction going on, but it's worth the effort.

Yelp
Everything well organized, punctual, very clean, our guide lady was great, very charismatic, kind and friendly. The only thing we didn't like it was to wait outside for 20 minutes and they don't have any place to sit down. If you'll be the first group in the morning you have to be there at 8:55 am

Yelp
This is a great way to step back into Fresno history. Knowledgeable young people eager to share stories of this unusual guy and project

Yelp
Picture taking is welcomed. No! Video cameras allowed One should definitely make it a priority to visit Forestiere Underground Gardens in Fresno Ca. The most spectacular place in Fresno Ca to see. The only underground botanical garden in the US and the world I think? Definitely make a detour traveling to the Central Valley or passing through to the Bay Area ( Northern California) make reservation online ( no walk ins) Rhanda our tour guide was spectacular, her knowledge in the history of the museum was amazing and her narrative kept us engaged. she didn't rush us out quickly from room to room . She gave us ample time to ask questions and admire in the beautiful master piece . Gratuity is much appreciated for the tour guides.

Yelp
Such an amazing place and a labor of love. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and told some amazing stories. Easy parking on the street and clean restrooms too.

Yelp
This place is inspiring. It shows you what's possible when a person like Baldasare Forestiere is willing to solve problems in an unusual way, making the best of a tough situation. What he created there is brilliant and original. Our docent Morgan did a great job of teaching us the history of the place and sharing her delight in it. Well worth a visit.

Yelp
One of the most surreal and fascinating things to do in Fresno! The juxtaposition from Shaw's endless line of stores and cars to a peaceful underground oasis is so unique. I've been twice, and the tour guides are always very friendly and informative! They have great merch offerings as well.

Yelp
This is an interesting place to visit once if you are passing by on I90 or in the area. The hand hewn tunnels are a sight, and the enthusiastic tour guide did a fantastic job sharing the tale of Baldassare Forestiere and his underground living area and gardens. The footing is a bit uneven (an older visitor in my tour had to take care). I was surprised that there is no water fountain as it gets very hot in Fresno, but they do sell bottled water. There was construction on Shaw Ave when I visited, so the block in front was inaccessible--then there was a train, so it took a bit of effort to turn around and figure out where to park. Leave yourself a bit of time to find parking and walk over! So: wear sturdy shoes, bring water, and arrive 10 minutes ahead of time :-)

Yelp
I visited the underground gardens today as a solo rider. The intricate tunnels and caves make this visit unforgettable. As a self proclaimed fresno enthusiast - this historical site is a direct reflection of the beauty of our city. Aside from the rich history and outstanding architecture, I would love to call special attention to the workers that assisted with my visit today. Both Alondra and Kai blew me away with their kindness and warm spirits. Kai's tour was phenomenal and enriching, as she knew exactly what she was talking about. She added cute jokes and was super personable with our small group. If you are able to - please book your tour with Kai. Alondra turned my day around with her genuine kindness and warmth even before the tour started. From our small interaction, she was able to provide me with positivity and warmth and helped reframe my mindset about my morning. Both of these girls are wonderful assets to your team. I will be returning and encouraging others to come along and experience the magic.

Yelp
Fascinating tour and friendly staff. They have a good collection of tools that Mr. Forestiere used to dig the tunnels and photos. Great stories.

Yelp
Our tour guide was articulate and well informed. The focus is more on the structures, history and how his methods advanced/changed over the 40 years as he built his "resort". It's sprinkled with some plant information (mostly citrus and grapes- which makes sense since they can grow up towards the light and form a canopy). Well worth the price of the tour. It really is amazing to think one person incorporated so many skills (engineering, physics, architecture) with minimal tools and formal education. A true visionary.

Yelp
This is a must to visit! The history behind it is so interesting. The architecture and trees are just magnificent. It is hard to believe that we have this beautiful hidden gem in our town. They are open from March to November. You need book online for guided tour. It's a great place to bring the family to learn a bit of history .

Yelp
Very unusual and cool (literally) even in summer. It's like visiting a domain in a Fantasy novel.

Yelp
A tad pricey but such a unique and fun experience, particularly if you're passing through, good for (patient) kids and adults alike, not very stroller or wheelchair friendly, would recommend booking tickets online beforehand since they sell out

Yelp
As a lover of nature and man-made creations this is definitely a to go location in Fresno. When I first found the attraction I was uncertain if it would be good or worth it. I am happy to say that I was not disappointed and I recommend it to anyone visiting the area. I didn't take any pictures of the site mainly because I think it is better seen in person than through photos. Additionally, in person viewing along with the great back story about the man who created it left me in awe. Definitely worth a try.

Yelp
Really cool and unique place! The gentleman dug these tunnels, and the fact created his house here after his day job of digging ditches. I came here with fairly low expectations, but I found myself increasingly fascinated as the tour went on. It's a shame that a lot of this digging was lost overtime, but at least the core 10 acres was saved. If you are driving anywhere near this place, stop and take a look. It is well worth the time.

Yelp
Great place to go see if you're visiting or local. Rhanda was our tour guide and she was so sweet! The tours are an hour long and you get to see some pretty cool rooms. I would recommend going to the gift shop first because when our tour was done, it was closed. (2:30) Prices are okay, but it was super cool and worth it to go just once. No strollers or wheelchairs because there are stairs.

Yelp
Rhannda was an amazing tour guide. She had a plethora of information all in her head. I was actually really impressed by that. The grounds itself were very beautiful and interesting to being in. They were also incredibly inspirational because of the vastness of the architecture. Will definitely recommend to all my family.

Yelp
The man was way ahead of his time!! A " Jules Verne" of his time. Who would have thought solar heated water, collecting rainwater, a built-in security system! If you want to see America, you have to complete your trip by seeing the Underground Garden. Great tour, simply amazing, I left in awe.

Yelp
I had been wanting to check out Forestiere Underground Gardens since moving to Clovis in 2020 but with 2 toddlers it just wasn't in the cards. My parents came to visit a few weekends ago and we decided to give it a try(even with a 4 and 2 year old in tow)! We had a fun time! It was a guided tour and we learned a lot! It's a very cool piece of Fresno history and you would never guess based on the location. My kids did pretty good. It was a lot of talking from the guide so it might not work for all young kids. The guide was well informed and everyone was very helpful. At one point my son needed to use the bathroom. They called another employee over to guide us to the bathroom and then guided us back to our group. Parking is in the street. There is no AC and even though you're underground it can still get warm down there. If you haven't been, it is definitely worth the visit!

Yelp
What an amazing place. I think everyone should visit at least once. I'd go again. I can't imagine one man doing all that work. I want to live there.

Yelp
This was an amazing tour. You pull up and it looks like a run down orchard, but the surprise under ground is so worth it

Yelp
We really enjoyed our tour with Christopher! So interesting to learn about this over 100 year old landmark. And the cooler temperature underground was nice too! Would recommend.

Yelp
I travel to orchid shows and visit Palm trees nurseries, but underground garden, sound dark however, Ben our tour guide was very articulate and smart. The underground garden began with a simple thought how do I stay cooler during the summer among other key factors. A unique tunnel system for home. Stop and buy tickets. You will dig it! Shout to Ben.

Yelp
We enjoyed the guided tour of the Forestiere Underground Gardens on a Sunday afternoon. Even though we had a tour guide (Cindy), it felt a bit like a self-guided tour as well, since at different parts, Cindy would tell us a bit about the architecture and history of what we were seeing and experiencing, then give the group freedom to explore and check it out on our own. So it was a nice balance, being able to learn all the interesting things about Baldassare Forestiere and this underground home and sanctuary he created, with wonderful plants and fruits along the way, while not feeling like the tour was so restrictive. It's made up of fascinating tunnels, mini sized rooms, narrow passageways, skylights, steps to take you on different levels, fruits and gardens, courtyards, and a grand ballroom in the end. And while learning about Forestiere's quirks, like his incorporation of the number 7 as a representation of his faith (ie. 7 arches in the trinity courtyard), or the number 3 symbolizing the father, son, and holy spirit (ie. 3 orange trees), you'll learn a bit about science too, whether related to physics or the environment... Forestiere was a smart man, and his ideas and aspirations included applications of science. Some noteworthy features were the waterfall planter (when it rained, the water would cascade down through the skylight like a waterfall), the tree of 7 fruits including grapefruits, oranges, and lemons all in one, and the aquarium (with fake fish on display, lol). The tour was exactly one hour long during our visit, but expect to be here a little longer if you want to explore the gift shop. Free street parking can be found right in front of the entrance or around the corner.

Yelp
Such a fun way to learn about Fresno history and it's agricultural history. I love to take out of town family and friends when they come to visit.

Yelp
This place was a wonder!! My guy and I had a wonderful time on the tour and got some amazing pics. It's a marvel what the man who created these underground living quarters and gardens did over the course of 40 years over a hundred years ago. I hope many more people visit this place and keep it in as great conditlion as it is now. wonderful staff!!

Yelp
One of a kind Garden! This spectacular garden will amazed you! Very unique underground garden with an epic history beyond it. I don't want to spoil it for you so I wont tell you who and how is was made!!! I can say if you are on Fresno once this place is a must. Make sure avoid rainy days and get your reservation in advance!

Yelp
Excelente atención y experiencia. Es mi segunda visita, y no deja de sorprenderme. Sería interesante que implementaran unos dos tours en español, para visitantes que vienen de países latinos.

Yelp
Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and delightful. This is a hidden gem full of fascinating history. I highly recommend this tour!

Yelp
Hidden gem. It's a must see when traveling through fresno area. The guides are very well informed and sometimes entertaining Get your tickets ahead of time because it can get very full very fast
