Forno Mauri - Review - South Loop - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Forno Mauri is a South Loop pizza destination for anyone scouring for a noteworthy Neapolitan-style pie. Inside this small boxy spot with abstract paintings and an Italian pop soundtrack, you’ll see a handful of couples sipping wine and maybe a tourist family digging into some pizzas. And those excellently charred pies, along with the ease of snagging a table, make this a good dinner idea for something last-minute. The classic margherita is great, but if you want some meat involved, get the di Norcia with sweet onions and italian sausage or the calzone. Food Rundown Pizza It might be the last section of the menu, but the pizza is the first priority here. For the red sauce lovers, the tart tomato sauce with creamy fior di latte is excellent. If you have some vendetta against red nightshades, the di Norcia with onions and Italian sausage is a great white pizza choice. photo credit: John Ringor Calzone This is basically a suped-up ham and cheese sandwich—and we mean that in the best way possible. It’s pretty simple with just cheese, thinly shaved prosciutto, and a “touch of tomato” as the menu states. But it adds up to a very tasty pizza pocket. photo credit: John Ringor Frito Misto If you’re trying a bunch of appetizers (or are eating with a bunch of indecisive friends) get this spread of bruschetta, suppli, potato croquettes, and zucchini flowers. It’s not going to win the Deep Fried Pioneer Of The Year award, but when it comes to fried things dipped in marinara sauce, it’s still satisfying." - John Ringor

The Newest Restaurants In Chicago

"Printers Row in the South Loop just got a new dine-in pizzeria. Forno Mauri keeps it focused on whole pies in classic flavors like margherita, four cheese, pesto, or amatriciana, and a baked lasagna of the day." - john ringor, veda kilaru, nick allen

Wow! This place was phenomenal. Alex was a wonderful server on top of the wonderful food. My boyfriend and I tried the cocktails: Long Island Iced Tea, Espresso Martini, and an Italian Moscow! Of course though the pizza was to die for! So light and airy with deep flavors. Tiramisu was also worth a taste.

Google
Forno Mauri! Wow! What a great little treat right on Printers Row. This spot boasts all Italian sourcing for their products, from the flour to the tomatoes to the cheese and beyond. We tried the meat and cheese combo, the lasagna, a cheese pie with extra cheese and a specialty pie. The crust was crispy, the cheese goey, and the topings were savory. The Lasagna takes a minute but if you like pasta give it a try. We will be back!

We read the online reviews & were not disappointed! Our waiter Alex was attentive & made excellent recommendations! Our drinks were delicious, our salad was full of fresh ingredients & the pizza was amazing! Definitely have the tiramisu. Alex brought us ice cold lemoncelluo before we left. We will be back on our next trip to Chicago!!!

My husband and I very much enjoyed the pizza here! It was light, toasty, and so tasty! We had the Ortolana and Amatriciana and both were really good and we thought they made a great pairing together! Service was also super attentive and thoughtful. We enjoyed learning a bit more about the food and the chef even came out to check on us! The arancini, tiramisu, and espresso were delicious too. I would definitely not miss out on the espresso if you like great coffee ☕! Highly recommend!

Google
Delicious neopolitan pizza! The sauce is very nice and flavorful. The basil is fresh. The service is great too! The place unfortunately has been fairly empty whenever we have visited ( 3 or 4 times), so the vibe isn't there. We will keep coming back for the pizza and recommending to our friends. I hope they add some more veggies pizza options. When they first opened, there were actual Italian staff... That has since changed.

Google
We had a group of 7 and our server was so attentive, answering all of our questions and all the recommendations were on point. He was very helpful with a nut allergy. The pizza was delicious as well as the lasagna. The lemon sorbet was just the right amount of sweet and tart. We will definitely be back.

Google
We wanted to like this place, especially since our favorite hotel doorman (hats off to Showtime) recommended it. The pizza was okay, but the salad was not very good, poorly tossed together and more or less tasteless. And the inside was crazy hot to the point of feeling muggy, so we sat outside even though it was slightly too cool for how we were dressed. Better to feel a chill than to sweat while you're eating... Anyway, no offense but we will not be returning!

Google
I would not recommend this restaurant for takeout. Not only are you not able to order online or over the phone, this pizza simply did not travel well at all. The cheese and toppings didn’t stay on the dough and it was a bit of a mess to eat. Flavor wise it was good and I’m sure it’s better in the restaurant. The salad was uninspiring I’d say and pricey for what you get. Charging $12 for a 12oz beer even in south loop is a bit crazy though. This isn’t an expensive steakhouse and a Sierra Nevada is not THAT fancy of a beer. Friendly service and nice patio.

Yelp
I am not sure what style of pizza this technically qualifies as - but it's delicious, which is what matters. The cheese, toppings, sauce, and crust were very tasty! No particular aspect overpowered the other and it was immensely satisfying to eat. See photos for an idea of what you'll be getting. The appetizer was good and the dessert we probably could've skipped (needed a bit more sugar). A word to those who eat their pizzas a bit slower than most: stick your knife underneath it to prop it up a bit as the plates they use for the pizzas cause the the crust to get soggy. Despite eating this almost comically fast, the crispy crust fresh out of the oven did steam itself up on the plate. Maybe I should've folded it instead of eating it demurely by the slice? Service was great, the seating comfortable, and the pacing of the meal was good. Solid spot especially for being relatively new. Not surprising since they're the same people behind Sofi next door though - they have their formula down to a science. And despite that, it still felt very personable from the time we walked in until we were given our ciao walking out.

Yelp
I've had 5 dollar NY slices here in Chicago 1000x better than the $24 calzone I will never have again. Flavorless and bland beyond belief. To charge over 10 dollars for something so below par? As overpriced as it is vastly overrated. And simply not good.

Yelp
Such a gem! This is a cozy Italian restaurant that specializes in authentic Italian pizzas. We've tried three pizzas so far and they have all been amazing. They're light yet satisfying, and you can tell they're made with high quality ingredients. Service is incredibly warm and personal. The staff recognized us on our second visit, and one of the chefs was kind enough to give us a free appetizer that is a specialty from his hometown, Amalfi. They also do takeout (not over the phone, but we ordered in the restaurant and only waited ~15 minutes).

Yelp
We started to cover this from the outside and then went inside and of course I introduced myself. Then I asked the owner/operator if I can walk around his business then he said no unless you want to sit down and I said I would like to make a reservation and after that he told me to leave which was a terrible ending. P.S. We were short on time because we needed to get to the boat show, so that's why we said that we wanted a reservation for another time.

Yelp
Interesting note from the business as we were a party of 3 and service was automatically included and we were told it was not optional (and actually asked if we wanted to add to it). We didn't object, just FYI.

Yelp
First experience at the brand new Forno Mauri pizzeria. From the same family that runs Sofi (next door) this spot focuses on Neapolitan pizza pies. We got ours to go, but the takeout service was excellent. They ended up having to remake one of my pies and instead if letting the other one get cold in the box, remade both of them. I greatly appreciate the quality control and thoughtfulness. The pizzas were excellent examples of the Neapolitan style and were extremely tasty with a wonderful doughy crust on the periphery with thin crust in the center. We got a Margherita pie and a Piccante Pie (spicy salami). My caliente wife really enjoyed the Piccante pie because she's spicy like that. We will definitely be back. Much welcomed addition to the neighborhood!

Yelp
There are a lot of pizza places in this square mile. We wanted to try this. Don't expect Chicago style deep dish pizza. Instead it's a wonderful, tasty thin crust. And they have so many options to choose from. The hardest part was pronouncing the names of the pizzas!

Yelp
Great Neapolitan pizza, the margherita was unbeatable. Service was great. Giuseppe was really attentive and personable. The tiramisu was pretty good too, lots of cocoa and heavily soaked in espresso. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
The italian mule was the best mule i've had, the pizza special of the day had prosciutto and tomato and it was delicious, and the service was perfect! Haven't had my calzone yet but it looks beautiful

Yelp
Excellent homemade lasagna and tiramisu. The waiter was exceptional and the atmosphere was great. The owner also came out to make sure things were good.

Yelp
What a great addition to Printers Row. The pizza was perfect! I had the classic margarita and it was a perfect balance of cheese, sauce, and a great crust. Very kind and attentive service they had great recommendations. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Authentic, delicious, wood-fired pizza. Ingredients are 100% fresh. All types of pizza are excellent! You absolutely can't go wrong!

Yelp
Stopped in last night and so glad I did. This place is legit! First I think everyone that works there is from italy. My waiter was from sicily and the chef is from almafi. I went with an app the chef recommended as it was an almafi staple, it was potatos with ham and cheese and insanely good. For the main course, I had the milano pizza and it cooked to perfection. Priced well and I will definitely be back. Everyone was so friendly, can't wait to go back and try different pizzas.

Yelp
Excellent pizza. The best I've had since moving to Chicago from New York. Try the picante pizza. It's out of this world.

Yelp
The food and service are exceptional!!! Recommend to anyone looking for the best lasagna of their life or a great pizza! The food music and atmosphere are great!

Yelp
Pizza reminds me of studying abroad in Europe. Great cozy date night. Excited to have a new place in the neighborhood. Loved the take on a burrata salad.

Yelp
Not the best I've had and not the worst. But I wouldn't spend that much on a not-so-great pizza again. Maybe it was a bad day because our pizzas didn't look anything like the pictures I see posted here. The crust wasn't fully cooked and was kind of gummy, and there was hardly anything on top of it. I much prefer Nella Pizza in Hyde Park.

Christine J.

Yelp
The restaurant was small, but inviting. The server did not seem to have knowledge about many of the food items we asked her about. We ordered the arancino appetizer. It was cold in the center and they did bring another. It was ok, but the marinara it was served with was cold and I didn't care for the taste. The pizza was good, but I've had better. Even though we live close to this place, we probably won't go back.
