DFW’s Fort Worth Magazine: The Airport Store Where No One Has to Check Out | Eater Dallas

"A 1,400-square-foot airport shop in Terminal C has been fitted with Zippin’s checkout-free system, letting travelers purchase more than 900 items and simply walk out without waiting in line. Customers scan an app or credit card to enter; AI-powered overhead cameras and shelf sensors then detect selected products and charge the chosen payment method automatically. Stocked with typical travel essentials — bottled water and other beverages, snacks, over-the-counter medicines, small tech accessories, souvenirs, and more — the concept is designed to remove friction for time-pressed flyers and busy venues. The operator argues the format is especially suited to airports and stadiums with dense, diverse crowds, and managers report that removing routine checkout duties can make employee interactions more pleasant, as visitors approach staff mainly to ask how the system works. This location is one of only three such airport deployments worldwide." - Courtney E. Smith

Very frustrated at this store you walk in there’s a $25 fee held on your card. This is not stated! I walked in twice got a total of $50 in fees! The store did not have what I wanted. I would avoid the store at all costs, not worth a headache. Walk the 20’ to the store right next to Fort Worth magazine! Frustrated me to the point I had to put my bottles of water back and make sure you put them back in the same exact spot or it will charge you. To the management team, bring back some human interaction and skip the BS you frustrate your customers beyond belief!

Two days ago, I ran into the clear door fences desperate for tampons until a kind, Asian woman explained that I had to charge my card to enter. After mindlessly charging my Apple Cash on my phone’s digital wallet, she proceeded to show me the feminine care area. I picked the least expensive pack (Playtex 360, 8 ct for $9.99) and asked her what to do next to which she said with a smile, “just leave and the system will charge” me. I waived and showed the box to every camera I could see, like an idiot proving to AI that I was only taking the $10 box. 30 minutes after the fact, I realized I had been charged $25. I assumed it was an initial charge that would fix itself. 4 hours ago I complained to Apple that I was charged the wrong amount. 1 hour ago it was corrected to $10.81 I am unsure if it just took this long to correct itself or if this occurred because I asked Apple to intercede. I’d like to think it’s the former, so 4 stars. Better explanations at the store’s entrance and of the charge process is needed. Had it not been for the lovely Asian woman (and I specify the ethnicity because I didn’t catch her name and the White employee next to her just stared at me with no desire to help me understand how to enter the store), I would have given this 1 star.

Theoretically, the concept of not having to walk through Register makes sense and it’s really cool and convenient. However, it was an uncomfortable experience wondering if the temporary deposit of $25 would be drop automatically and then billed the correct amount. Luckily for me, the deposit was dropped automatically and charged accurately for my drink. Recommendation: The store should be required to post sign on the door letting customer know upfront about the temporary $25 upfront charge to their credit card before walking-in. They should also should also post sign with the stores phone number where to call directly in the event a customer is charge amount. Personally I wouldn’t feel comfortable visiting the store again unless I knew where to call if anything is wrong.

We were intrigued by the set up. The one person working there came to the front where we were standing and told us how it worked. You swipe your card to enter, the camera tracks what you pick up and can even tell when you put items back down. We didn’t make a purchase because those were some CRAZY HIGH PRICES!!! I know it is an airport, but it was still crazy. Imagine my surprise when I saw a 25$ charge pending on my card. She didn’t tell us it makes any kind of preauthorization. So, if it doesn’t drop off in a few days, I will have to call and raise ten kinds of hell!

Walked up to "gate". Very confusing. Employee just stood by the side and watched me and another lady try to figure out how to get in the store. Gates said automatic ... they do not open automatically. Apparently, you need to put in your credit card first. I told the girl it'd be nice if there was a sign explaining it. She pointed to a sign on the outside of the store and a little bitty sign that was laying flat, facing the ceiling. I'm trying to explain to her if two people are standing here and we can't figure it out. Maybe the signage should be different… Or maybe an employee should walk over and help two people trying to figure it out. Worthless employee! I said, what i suggest that you send along the criticism that you need better signage. She looked at me like I was stupid. I told her you're not really wanting to hear any suggestions on how to make things easier do you… She shook her head No! lol.

I had a very frustrating experience at the Fort Worth Magazine store at the airport. When I tried to follow the directions to enter, the doors wouldn’t open. As I was trying to figure it out, a clerk came out and, rather than offering assistance, rudely said, ‘Don’t you read the directions.’ She then continued to walk around the store on a personal call. When I asked for her name, she refused, saying I didn’t need to know it and again told me to read the directions. As a frequent traveler who passes through this airport weekly, I’m appalled by this level of service. I’ll be avoiding this store in the future and will encourage others to do the same. This unprofessional behavior is simply unacceptable.

This store is a modern tech disaster. Not only is it confusing on how to enter, you are charged 25 dollar hold with no receipt. After 30 minutes of exiting you may or may not receive the correct charge on card. There’s a major trip hazard on floor as you leave. And no directions on how to leave. The waving hand function doesn’t work and had to be operated by an attendee. This store is terrible; absolute disaster of a place. And the “skip checkout” advert is in no way faster.

This is all I bought from this store. Seemed like a really cool idea. I understand that the $25 charge is pending but I still have not received a valid receipt. Any insight here?
