Fortuna - Review - Gramercy - New York - The Infatuation

"Fortuna is a casual Middle Eastern restaurant in Gramercy where you can get things like schnitzel and braised beef in sandwich or platter form, as well as a few different hummus options. They’re open from 11am through dinner. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Will Hartman

Fortuna NYC is hands down one of the best Mediterranean spots in the city. The chicken schnitzel is perfectly crispy, juicy, and packed with flavor—it’s easily one of the best I’ve ever had. The shawarma is just as incredible—tender, well-seasoned, and bursting with bold, savory flavor. Their hummus deserves its own spotlight: super fresh, smooth, and rich—exactly how it should be. You can taste the quality in every bite. On top of the amazing food, the vibes are unbeatable—warm, inviting, and full of life. Whether you’re dining in or grabbing takeout, Fortuna nails it every time. Highly recommend!

Very testy and authentic food. The Manager was very polite , talked to us and explained about the history of the new place . The kabab with humus was perfect dish, very fresh chopped salad. The chicken Shnitzel was huge and crispy. highly recommended.

Our group of five came in and we left completely blown away. From the second we walked in, the peaceful atmosphere set the tone—soft music, calming scents, and a beautifully serene setting that instantly made us feel relaxed and present. The food was incredible—each dish felt nourishing and thoughtfully prepared. We all ordered different things, and every single plate was a hit. You could taste the freshness and intention in every bite. The desserts were light yet satisfying. Highly recommended to anyone and we definitely will come back !

Google
Pretty new spot—well-designed and in a great location. The space feels fresh and thoughtfully put together. The staff looked professional, friendly, and ready to help, which really adds to the vibe. The menu offers a nice variety of Israeli and Middle Eastern dishes as shakshuka, hummus, jachnun, and much more. Everything looked fresh and authentic. I’m heading back this Friday. You coming?

This restaurant is like an oasis in a desert. There aren’t a lot of places to go and have something very tasty and this place checks the box. I had some sort of eggplant sandwich with egg and a whole bunch of stuff. I don’t know what was in there but it was really good. My guest had a mushroom sandwich And it was also good. We both had lemonade which was much better for you then soda. The owner said he was from Israel. He was a charming guy.

We had a wonderful weekend lunch here. The Friday schnitzel was fantastic. The Mazze were fresh and flavorful, and the pitas ♥️ The service was friendly and professional. We will definitely come back again.

Everything was SO good, one of the best hummus I’ve ever had. It’s so smooth. The lamb kebab was also really juicy and flavorful. Definitely one of my favorite Israeli food places. The owner is also really friendly and we got free bamba 😋

Yelp
What a gem reasonable find! Friend and I got a hummus, sandwich, and falafel side to share and end up paying a little over $30pp. - mushroom hummus: extremely creamy, do NOT skimp put on it. - snitczel sandwich: huge, comes in amazing challah bread and goes great with all the sauces they provide you with - falafel: the best vegetarian chicken nugget cravings, just the right bite size and delicious with their red sauce Lastly, the best is their server/bartender. They really took pride in the noms they serve. They also made the experience really fun. The restaurant also has a cute patio in the back, great for small parties. The indoor is also super cute.

Yelp
This has become one of my new favorite restaurants! The staff, the food, the setting were all perfect. We got the Spicy Fish Plate, the Lamb Kebab Plate, and Falafel to share. Each plate comes with half off hot appetizers which is why got the falafel. The lamb kebab was my favorite. The hummus was so smooth and creamy and the lamb was juicy and cooked perfectly. The pita was warm and soft, one of the best pitas I've had! The spicy fish plate had a deliciously spiced sauce and the fish was tender. The challah it came with was nice and toasted on the outside but still soft on the inside. The falafel was also crunch on the outside but soft on the inside and flavored well, it wasn't dry at all. Overall, would reorder every dish we got! The staff was so sweet, always checking up on us without being too overbearing. They were very welcoming. There's bar seating, indoor table seating, and outdoor patio seating. It's an open kitchen concept, so it's also fun to see them making each dish fresh.

Yelp
An absolute gem of a spot to eat. The food was amazing. Had the prime steak hummus and it was fantastic! The lamb was cooked to perfection, and the desserts were all a must. The service was excellent. Our waiter Eric recommended excellent choices to eat and was warm and welcoming. I will absolutely return.

Yelp
This place is incredible! Every dish is bursting with flavor--savory, fresh, and consistently delicious. I love coming here with friends, and my kids absolutely adore it. There's always many options on the menu they enjoy, no complaining when we're here Easily a 10/10.

Yelp
This is a delicious new place on First Avenue with a nice outside dining area in the back. The eggplant hummus and falafel sandwich are both absolutely amazing. They taste so fresh and delicious, the best falafel in the neighborhood, by far. The spicy fish is spicy and delicious. The server that was there for his second day of work was very friendly and attentive.

Yelp
The hummus!! Need I say more? I will. The pita!! Any restaurant that claims to be Middle Eastern, but dials it in with the pita is a tragedy. Fortuna masters the hummus, the salads, and the pita bread. What a great addition to the neighborhood.

Yelp
Fortuna is a casual Middle Eastern eatery that had just opened up in Gramercy - their menu is pretty extensive, cold and hot mezzes, offering salads, sandwiches, entrees/plates, and desserts. We ordered: +Babaganoush +Hummus with Mushrooms +the Falafel Ha-Tahana sandwich - this was a pita filled with tahini, cucumbers, tomatoes, and pickled cabbage +a Schnitzel plate - served with hummus, mixed greens, and a pita +and, Fortuna's Braised Beef - with tahini, schug, pickles, and challa; the beef had been braised for 8 hours Everything was fresh, clean, and well-presented! The staff and service were friendly. +casual Mediterranean eats +friendly service

Yelp
We got take out from here. The falafel was very good. The schnitzel sandwich was ok, probably not something I would order again. They forgot two pitas for our order so we didn't have anything to eat with the dips we got. They didn't answer the phone when we tried calling about the missing items.

Yelp
Brought a group of friends to Fortuna! Great time! Great Food ! Beautiful decor and service was perfect! Lev, one of the owners was so charming! A must try spot!

Yelp
A great new addition to the neighborhood. It's bigger than it looks from the street; beyond the lunch counter are some tables in the back, and even a little outdoor space. Everything tastes very fresh; the pita and challah they serve with entrees are delicious, as well as very large. We got some mezes with the aforementioned huge and delicious pita, then the beef soup they have every day, and spiced fish. Good flavors, friendly service, fair prices...what more could you want?

Yelp
Tried our local eatery "Fortuna" today for lunch! What a beautiful place with a nice and quaint patio area. Delicious mediterranean food. We had the chicken shawarma sandwich , and the braised beef platter, served with some pickled vegetables, and the fluffiest fresh home made pita. We also tried their vegan pannacotta for dessert. We will definetely return!

Yelp
Claim to be middle eastern but clearly aren't. Sad attempt at middle eastern food. Don't go here if you are looking for AUTHENTIC middle eastern cuisine.

Yelp
Fortuna is a great, new addition to the neighborhood. I walked in last night after a week of fine dining in Sonoma, so my standards were unreasonably high, but I left feeling welcomed and satisfied. The staff were lovely, the atmosphere was comfortable, and the food was delicious. I'm still thinking of the creamy hummus (we chose the one with eggplant which was perfectly roasted). I spied a beef soup at a table nearby, and I'm glad I ordered it - perfect for a chilly night. The meat was tender and the pita was fluffy, soft and warm. We also had the spicy fish which was not dangerously spicy, just lively. We were too full to add dessert. I'm looking forward to returning.

Yelp
Great food and excellent service! We had the schnitzel, hummus, and challah schnitzel everything was fresh, flavorful, and well prepared. The staff was friendly and attentive. Would definitely come back!

Yelp
This place was amazing! Eric had the beta recommendations and we already can't wait to go back to try more!

Yelp
Wow that place is good. Love the vibe. Amazing ambiance. And how good is that food! The humus, shnitzel and lamb kebabs were next level flavorful. And the desserts rocked my world. We will surely be back to this gem.

Yelp
Just opened so tried a few of my favorite dishes and I'll be back to try more. Very nice seating options, friendly service and very authentic foods. Had to try hummus and falafel of course. Everything was great.

Yelp
Such a great addition to the neighborhood. Food was seriously delish. Pita was fluffy and fresh. The mezze were small and perfect. We had the spicy fish which was great. Service was great. Everyone seemed genuinely happy. We had a local desert which was creamy and fragrant and really tasty. Looking forward to going back.

Yelp
Was excited when FORTUNA opened in my neighborhood. Finally a falafel sandwich. Unfortunately, worse and most expensive Falafel sandwich I ever purchased. Small in size, soggy doughy pita (I asked for whole wheat and got white) soggy tasteless falafel and fillings....all soaked in tahini. $15 incl. tip for takeout. Though the space was airy and inviting, service was not welcoming or particularly friendly. I will have to go further south into the El Village to the best MAMOUNS.

Tal L.

Yelp
Perfect. Authentic Mediterranean food. Feels like at grandma kitchen ...... don't skip the lamb kebab

Pauline L.

Yelp
Best falafel in the city! Their kabab and shawarma sandwiches are exceptionally good and are served on a fresh pita type bread. I am Middle Eastern and standards are high... this place is fantastic. Helpful advice to the chef... a little more lemon on the chopped salad and the pickled beets and turshay need more salt... otherwise blown away by the flavors. Will be dining there often!

Renee K.

Yelp
Wasn't very hungry but I needed to eat something; had babaganoush and French fries...babaganoush with the pita, which was warm and fluffy, was very tasty. Fries arrived and they were thin, hot and delicious!!! These two small menu options were tasty and filling. Service was very good and the waitress and waiter were very friendly and attentive. Eric was on point and funny, too! Fortuna was warm and inviting-I'll definitely be going back there soon! Eric (one of Fortuna' waiters) was on point and funny, too!

Yelp
Ordered the Friday schnitzel sandwich and fennel salad for delivery and both were 10/10. The sandwich is massive and comes served on a fluffy challah sandwich roll, and has a crunchy cabbage salad and Moroccan eggplant salad on it as well. It comes delivered with three sauces: a zhoug, a tahini and a medium spicy sauce. I will definitely be in soon for dinner!
