Classic Foods and Cocktails Invented in the San Francisco Bay Area | Eater SF

"Though a couple of Los Angeles bakers have tried to claim credit for creating the fortune cookie, food historians agree that the most reliable origin story comes from San Francisco. The reason is this: A very similar looking cookie existed in Japan dating back to the 19th century, though it was a savory variety flavored with miso, and there is also a tradition in Japan called omikuji in which random fortunes are written on slips of paper. Japanese immigrant Makoto Hagiwara, who opened San Francisco’s Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park in 1894, is said to have ordered the sweet, folded cookies from San Francisco confectioner Benkyodo (which is still open in Japantown) in 1918, so they could be served at the tea garden. The move into Chinese restaurants came during World War II, when most of SF’s Japanese-Americans were put in internment camps. The Smithsonian says that Chinese businessmen then took the opportunity to copy the recipe and market the cookies to Chinese restaurants, and the rest is history. You’ll find them almost anywhere in Chinatown, but look out for the small, delicious-smelling Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory." - Jay C. Barmann

This is a bare bones, basic Chinese food place. My husband loves it. He always says that the portions are more than generous. He also doesn't get indigestion after eating their food which is a good thing. They no longer allow you to eat inside so it is only for delivery or carry out. The people who work there are super friendly and the prices are reasonable.

I haven't even pulled off from in front of the location because I wanted to make sure that I left my review so I didn't forget and while it was fresh on my mind I didn't even make it home before trying some of my food because it smells so delicious. So it was a little bit disappointed because outside the place doesn't look that great so I was nervous about whether the food was going to be good or not because outside but this is why they say do not judge a book by its cover. They do not have steam tray anymore but they have rice plates which you can either get steamed rice (white rice,) fried rice, chow mein for an extra dollar you can add meat. They have a variety of different items you can choose from for Rice plate. I asked what she recommended she told me orange chicken and Mongolian beef so I opted into the orange chicken because I was already looking at it and let me tell you I was not disappointed total came up to 10 bucks I did not have to wait more than 10 minutes the food was hot fresh flavorful and quick. If you are in the area or even if you're not in the area and you want some cheap but good tasting nice quality food come here the orange chicken was not too overwhelming with the orange flavor but you can tell that it was a fresh orange sauce it was supposed to be spicy but it wasn't super spicy to me the batter is super crispy and crunchy is lightly coated with just the right amount of sauce and it's enough meat in there to where you're not getting overwhelmed with the batter the chow mein had Fresh Veggies like bean sprouts green onion white onions and cabbage and was not overcooked and was flavorful. Easily 8.5 out of 10 will definitely be back. I'm in the car right now debating if I want to go back and order the Mongolian beef or not. Definitely one of the better places in Oakland I will say the regular menu is kind of expensive though but if you can afford it get it and a plus is a ginger ale for a $1.50

Google
This is my go-to in West Oakland. They're fast, like really really really really fast. The food is excellent. I've tried a lot of the menu and have yet to find anything that I really didn't like. I can call this place walk downstairs get into my car and drive there and the food's ready when I walk through the door. At lunch time they have combos that are super affordable and filling. I really love the orange chicken.

Google
Ordered shrimp fried rice & only got 4 shrimp. Sesame seed chicken, I’m sure if I was chicken or just old. Arguing the nasty Chinese food. Go to panda

Google
Unfortunately the sweet-and-sour soup was very plain taste wise. And even though the broccoli beef looks very appetizing the meat is not top tier. I immediately regretted getting the broccoli beef. I really hope the chicken plates are better. Unfortunately this is one of those Chinese spots that is very cheap which is great but unfortunately the food is not even good quality. I drive all over the bay area and I find Great tasting Chinese food at great prices all over but I cannot add this place to the list unfortunately

Google
Best takeout in Oakland 🤗 Food is made to order so there is a reasonable wait time. Flavor and texture is great every time at a fair price point.

Google
As a trucker I can say the food is really good ESPECIALLY THEIR POT STICKERS. Those were the best I have ever had. Definitely better than what you get from the stores. Their house fried rice is really good and cooked fresh too. Good amount of food for the price. If you are delivering to the Port of Oakland near TraPac, Door Dash can deliver. Total time about 35 minutes from order to truck. If you’re low on hours and no roach coaches near by, DEFINITELY ORDER FROM HERE.

Google
Sadly, I'm only around here on average once every 30 days but, if I'm around there and they are open I try to always get food from there. I usually order the same thing which is pork fried rice with a side of sweet and sour sauce and chicken egg foo young sometimes with a side of extra gravy and an order of large white jasmine rice. I have ordered a couple other things but that's usually my go-to order. The people there are very friendly very attentive and it's just my personal opinion but the food is really really good. It's closed up for dine-in so it's only to go or Uber and stuff so I can't comment on atmosphere unless it is simply the engagement with the people at the counter but my personal experience is always really terrific. I wish they were open every time I came by and I wish I was there often because I would easily eat there two to three times a week easily guaranteed

Yelp
Meh it was a means to an end and convenient. I was at the post office across the street and needed to grab a quick lunch. Do not come here expecting anything extravagant. I got the House special soup and some pot stickers. The Pot stickers were ok. They were not pan seared like you would fined in traditional settings. They were deep fried making them more just crispy dough with meat instead. The soup was cool. You can tell that there is little effort put into the broth it just tasted like water and oyster sauce. It definitely could have used a little chicken bouillon . I ended up adding a few extra things to the brow to make it less water tasting. The nice part is that service was quick which was just what I needed at that time.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place, I really did. I ordered the combo fried rice and the beef in it was tough yet underdone. Grey meat. The rice itself had some good color and flavor but overall the dish was a fail because of the poor quality and cook of the beef, and the stingy portion of shrimp in it. I may get the shrimp fried rice next time IF I give this place a second chance. The crab Rangoon was also a big disappointment. They were underdone and yet also greasy too. I have to bake them in the oven and crisp them up before I can eat them. I'm not going to throw them away, I hate wasting food. I'll also eat the fried rice with the beef picked out, that unfortunately was inedible to my mouth, but again can't waste food so I will eat this week. But damn, y'all. Bad food is such a disappointment. Who's in that kitchen?? Is the wok not hot enough?? Because grey meat and raw wontons ain't cuttin' it.

Yelp
My friend and I got two orders of hand pulled noodles for lunch. It was a good serving size for us to share as a pick me up. We got take out so didn't really get a good look inside but it was a small noodle shop. We walked around for 20 minutes for our orders. Was ready by the time we got back for pick up. Quick and good food.

Yelp
We routinely get our food to-go from here. We live their House Chowmein or Fried Rice. Tasty with a nice amount of shrimp, chicken, beef and vegetables. Crab wontons are delish! Egg rolls are very good too. Haven't had a bad experience with anything. Our friend loves their Orange Chicken combo plate. I've enjoyed their Broccoli Beef and General Tsao. Not a place to hang. To-go is the only choice. Sketchy area.

Yelp
"Fortune Cookie" misses the mark as a good Chinese fast food place. This is American Chinese Food. You can probably find your favorites here. I was in the area, and saw the place on 7th Street. I ordered Mongolian Beef, Steamed Rice, and veggies. How was it? Value, Grade (2/5): Not too expensive, but the serving is like a TV dinner. A good Chinese fast food place has generous servings, this one does not. Food, Grade (2/5): Mongolian Beef is one of my favorite dishes. As another review stated, this is more like "mongolian onions." Hey, where's the beef? I had to wade thru the onions to find the beef. And then, some of the beef pieces were chewy. Now, the flavor was good and spicy. But not enough beef. The steamed rice was fresh, moist, and fluffy. Now I paid extra for veggies. Why? I was trying to build a healthy lunch. They gave me 4 pieces of bok choy. Service was fast. This place is located right across the street from the US Mail Processing Center on 7th Street. It's 2 blocks from the 7th St x I-880 ramps, and down the street from the BART station. Overall, a 2-star experience.

Yelp
Horrible now, cheap canned mushrooms and not good BBQ pork in the rice. Avoid this nasty place, they'll NEVER see me again. I got a refund and gave the food back, what a waste of time. They also raised the lunch specials by $2, atleast use fresh vegetables. Such a shame what happens to these places, the location isn't good anyway.

Yelp
i was wondering why it was cheap and was so much..it was horrible wouldn't even give to the homeless, i got beef chow mien and bbq pork fried rice everything had no flavor smh dont eat here

Yelp
Great prices and great service . It's a regular spot for my family when we have lazy nights . We love the house rice . The whole menu is pretty good and you definitely get what you're looking for with the menu selection .

Yelp
Making "Made In the Bay Area" gift bags, including fortune cookies. Oakland Fortune Factory perfectly covered the fortune cookie need in the gift bag. I placed the order online, called about a pick up time, and my order was ready

Yelp
The only reason I order from this restaurant because it only take5min drive from my house. I ordered Mongolian beef. The taste was good but I can hardly ever find the beef. They should change the name to Mongolian onion.
google avatar

Arisa G.

Yelp
I love their house fried rice and chow mein - very packed. However, beware of their spicy versions. It can be a bit overpowering, but some people like it like that. Not located in the best area, but everything is to-go and they have very quick service.

Yelp
LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE: AVOID, AVOID, AVOID. This place does not give a single f*** about the food or their customers. This is some seriously nasty, nasty food. Shame on them. The only reason they are still in business because it's the only restaurant nearby in West Oakland. This was my mistake for not looking at the yelp reviews before wasting my money. Lesson learned. Had to go to the post office and I saw this place and decided to grab something to eat since it was lunch time. I ordered General Tso's Chicken. Took it back to my office to eat it only to discover that it was 100% inedible. The ONLY flavors were way, way too much salt and way, way too much vinegar. I'm not being picky, either. I knew it wasn't going to be haute cuisine, but this dish had honest-to-god actual inedible amounts of salt and vinegar. If that weren't enough, I asked for extra spicy and it was 100% not spicy. I couldn't even grimace and bear it, even though I was super hungry. I ate one bite and had to throw the rest of it in the trash. To give you an idea, it's been 20 minutes since that one horrible bite and I still can't wash the salt taste out of my mouth. I -honestly- would have had more more pleasure from this lunch if I'd just skipped ordering all together and instead went ahead and lit the $9 in paper bills with a match and watched them burn.

Yelp
this fortune cookie has really crumbled, decor wise inside. O maintenance. just 2 tables for dining within. steam table has 10 ish entrees. no labels. the usual eats. menu: the usual americanized chinese food + teriyaki eats: 2 entrees + 1/2 chow, 1/2 fried rice (6.25) no tax, no bag -shrimp with vegetables -pork with vegetables, warned it was spicy. it wasn't. -fried rice, chow mein, heavily seasoned with soy sauce *entrees had sodium flavoring, mix of cut corn pieces, waterchestnut slices, green peppers, onions, celery, shrimps, pork pieces, green peas.. -good value, very watery, fork couldn't hold dripping moisture. better to eat with chopsticks. not provided. just plastic (cheaper). take outs: -food isn't much different from panda express except you would still be hungry.

Yelp
Great service and even better food! Highly recommend trying them out, you won't regret it!

Yelp
Ate here twice and would not recommend anyone go here. The first time was a mediocre experience, the food was nothing to remember. The second time was very bad. I got orange chicken and crab rangoon, two dishes I greatly enjoy and ones that are hard to do wrong. The chicken was hard and crunchy and the rangoon were underdone. It was around 6 pm and I was running late for class and figured "how bad could it be?" I ate some of the chicken and couple rangoon. Well 20 minutes later I was gassy and couldn't concentrate, I went home early and had a stomach ache and trouble eatting for the next day. I'm not the kind of person who gets sick easily either. I wanted to like it. Tried twice. Try somewhere else

Food still hot when they delivery restaurant pack food with care. This place will be one of my list favorite Chinese restaurant. Also the price is cheap but taste is top!

Yelp
One of the few places left that do their own delivery! We love ordering from here and always get the garlic eggplant, mapo tofu, and pork fried rice. Very tasty and good servings for the price!

Yelp
This review is for delivery only, because I have not had the experience eating inside yet. I normally don't order takeout/delivery, because I like to actually go inside of a restaurant and enjoy that way, but lately, I've been trying delivery more often. My boyfriend wanted to order Chinese food, and nowadays, I'm really trying to avoid MSG. According to yelp, Fortune Cookie in Alameda and Oakland both don't use MSG. What's funny is that, I live in Alameda, and my intention was to get delivery service from the Alameda location, but accidentally ordered from this location on Eat 24 instead, and I am so happy I made that mistake. LOL The confirmation order said that it was going to take 45-60 minutes, it actually took 40 minutes to get to Alameda! So impressed! What's even more impressive, was that the food was very delicious, kept warm and being delivery and all. Plus, when I was on the last page of the confirmation order, it said that I had one free order of wonton soup! Hell yeah! Also, it was the right weather for it too!! I will definitely want to order delivery service from these guys again in the future.

Yelp
Order my food 1 hour ago. Customer service is good. Deliver took 50 mins and when eating I immediately tasted the salt and pepper shrimp and that it was nasty. The breading was thick like a old biscuit and you know that it was not prepared or cooked today. Definitely that was made a different day, not fresh at all. So that won't be eaten. Egg rolls were very mushy as if it was raw in the inside. The rice taste like it was made a different day as well and just put back on the stove to get re heated. This was my first time eating from this restaurant. I would give another try sometime maybe. The chow main was good to me. My husband didn't like it. But overall our lunch was distasteful and not fresh. Quarantine 2020

Yelp
Food is ok most of the time but don't order for delivery. This is some bs.. "large" salt and pepper "prawns" for ten bucks.. filled half way. Really? Looks like an overstuffed small cartons worth of small shrimp..
google avatar

Mari M.

Yelp
It's been a while since I've updated the review for this place. Since this is the only place that delivers when I want Chinese food, I'm going to go ahead and say it has improved tremendously. I complained of the over soy-sauced rice. It isn't soy-saucey anymore. Instead, it's a lot greasier than I'm used to. Also, their honey walnut prawns continue to be over battered and over sauced. Crab rangoons. It's really hard to mess this up, and they don't! It's yummy and delicious. =D On the plus side, their delivery is usually within 30 minutes and they have the best fortunes in their fortune cookies.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is exactly what greasy, salty, inexpensive, fast Chinese food should be. It also happens to be the only Chinese takeout place that offers free delivery to my area on Eat24 (which constantly has coupon promotions running), so whenever I'm feeling cheap on my student budget (and particularly fat-craving), this is my go-to. My very first experience was horrendous. The delivery came over 50 minutes LATE (taking more than 2 hours total), even though I was checking every 15 minutes after placing the order to make sure it would arrive on time. The restaurant kept telling me "it was on its way" but either they were lying or the driver had serious car issues. However, my experiences afterwards were nearly perfect. I guess I got unlucky the first time because after that, everything was always on time. I love how generous Fortune Cookie is with portion sizes. The food isn't the BEST Chinese I've ever had, but it's full of sodium and MSG and oil and just hits the spot every once in a while. They give you a LOT... one item off the menu lasts me several meals. Check out the lunch specials--you can get an entree with a side of rice (fried or regular... but who wouldn't choose fried rice in this situation?!?) for only $5.25. When I'm feeling particularly guilty for bingeing, I ask them to steam all the meat/veggies and serve the sauce separately, rather than frying everything together. They're always happy to oblige as long as you ask nicely, plus it's a healthier option! ...As if anyone goes to Chinese to be "healthy." I always get something from the lunch combo (shrimp and green beans, shrimp and broccoli, shrimp and snow peas.... see a trend?), but my boyfriend likes to be more adventurous so I've tried a lot on the menu. I've determined everything tastes differently from what you'd expect. Not necessarily in a bad way, but it's not what you would call authentic or even "Americanized," definitely not your standard Panda Express fare. For example, the orange chicken tastes good but it's suuuuper saturated in sauce and is flavored a little different. The ma po tofu (one of my favorite dishes) is tangy, almost like hot & sour soup, rather than meaty and savory. Again, not necessarily bad, but just different! The driver is super adorable and polite. It's the same guy each time, pretty sure he'd recognize me on the street by now lol. Delivery minimum is $15. No delivery fees!

Yelp
Horrible food chicken was rubbery it was under cooked it was a lot of flour in no meat it was horrible. Rice was so greasy. Then the driver asked me for a tip. I couldn't believe it. After tasting the chicken so glad I didn't tip. I know good Asian food and this ain't it. Try egg roll kitchen in east Oakland way better if you don't mind being in the hood Save your money your better off eating cup of noodles

Yelp
Fast service. Horrible food. All of my coworkers were pissed off at me for choosing this place. Food is cheap. But horrible n greasy food.
google avatar

Heidy M.

Yelp
I order prawns chow main spicy and regular chicken chow mein, the first one I ordered spicy and what they use it was salty, the chicken had a weird taste my girls didn't like it at al the chicken had no taste, I order broccoli chicken it had way too much garlic, I order a generals chicken it was saggy and super salty it was a big lump.. It was my first time there I will not go back again.

Yelp
In bed sick, and hungry and my favorite spot Yang Chow is closed.(bummer) Whenever I'm not feeling well, a nice bowl of Wor Won Ton Soup usually does the trick. So I decided to give this place a try. I got my soup, veggie fried rice, shrimp egg rolls and crab rangoons.I tell you EVERYTHING was crap!!! Soup full of onions and cabbage with a flavorless broth, and undercooked won tons, the rangoons, I guess were baked. It was like biting into a piece of pottery! Being in the food industry, I try to give a break when the food is inferior. But when I come across a place that seems to be getting over by taking good money for bad food, I have to speak up. So now I'm here, still sick, still hungry, out of $40 and super annoyed. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED, DON'T EAT HERE
google avatar

Michelle R.

Yelp
I wanted to try a new Chinese place that delivered in Emeryville. It was ok. I got the black pepper beef, kung pao chicken, and mu shu veggies. They were all pretty good. There weren't many peanuts in the chicken, but there were a lot of mixed veggies in the mu shu. My only problem was with the potstickers....just say no. I don't know if they have a buffet and they were sitting out for hours, but they were pretty bad. I made my own brown rice while I waited for their delivery...a little over 30 minutes. They charge 2 bucks for delivery, and the prices were a bit off from their seemingly newly printed menu. But it was ok. I might order again if I'm too lazy to go out.
google avatar

Yelp
Great price for good food. I've ordered here mutltiple times and its quality has always been consistently good. I recommend the pork fried rice. Delivery is a nice service they offer and they're always really friendly to me.
google avatar

Tannia O.

Yelp
I do not like to write reviews but the fact that an item in their menu is misleading well that is another thing. Item: Fried Wontons (12pieces) should be twelve pieces and well not fried chips. Just the fact you mention 12 and I got what can only be 30 chips, they either miscounted or just plain sent out the wrong item. Other items received were correct I just don't like being mislead.

Yelp
I live in South Berkeley and one day when I came home, there was a menu under the door mat. My boyfriend and I decided to try it for dinner later that week. While the main dishes we ordered were very underwhelming (Chicken Chow Fun & Szechuan Pork), the BBQ Honey Chicken Wings were amazing and that is all we have ordered from them since. The first couple of times we did a delivery order and each time it took over a hour to get the food. The most recent order we placed was for pick-up and we had the food on the table in 30 minutes. They also just re-did the website and you can order online for either pick-up or delivery which is very convenient.
google avatar

Vicki L.

Yelp
Ordered delivery from this place because it was one of the few places still open. We got the chicken corn soup, seafood fried rice, broccoli beef, cashew chicken, and the free cream cheese wontons. Pros: - Food arrived hot. Cons: - Delivery took over an hour. - The delivery guy tried to pretend he didn't have change to try to get a bigger tip. - Lastly... BLARGH! Quite possibly the worst Chinese food I've ever had. Inedible swill! Not because it is Americanized Chinese food, which it is. I can get Panda Express and enjoy it for what it is. This was just straight up gross. I can't write put my finger on what it was that made it so disgusting, but for example: The fried rice just tasted like grease. The chicken was somehow both rubbery and undercooked. We ate a few bites and dumped the rest. Will not be returning.

Jason T.

Yelp
Cheap, quick, and delicious Chinese food. I'm a diabetic, so I ordered "chicken and mixed vegetables" with the specific request of cooking it in water (so no sauce added). They filled the take-out box to the brim, and it was mouthwateringly good. Pair that with a $1 diet coke, and you got yourself a filling, low-carb meal. Highly recommend.

Alex T.

Yelp
Everything I have tried from Fortune Cookie (been there 3+ times) has been tasty. Great value for the price!
google avatar

Cassandra G.

Yelp
I used Eat 24 and the app has not failed me until I ordered from here. My order took over an hour to be delivered, it's ridiculous. The food was cold, the kung pow chicken was under cook, I don't even think what they gave me was even king pow chicken. The egg rolls were soggy, potstickers were cold and the package was open. The chow mean was over cooked. The can sodas were warm but there was water all over the bag, so I'm assuming they were cold but since it took for ever to be delivered they got warm. The list goes on it was absolutely terrible. I will not be ordering from here again.

Yelp
In desperate need for cheap Chinese food and too lazy to leave the house? They deliver. But if it weren't for the delivery, I would NEVER take the time to drive here and eat. The food is so not worth it. Crab wontons: These are super fake Chinese food but I love them! Theirs are especially good. Crispy outside, lots of yummy cream cheesey crabby filling. Ok so it's more on the cream cheese side and less on the crab side but... still good nonetheless. Hot and sour soup: One of the things I always order. $4.25 gets you a BIG portion that comes in a nice little tupperware. I keep these. Yeah... I'm ghetto... Fried rice: Meh... nothing special. Nothing too horrible. Just plain fake fried rice. Not especially flavorful but definitely edible. Beef chow fun: NO flavor. Go to the Crispy Fry in the Emeryville Marketplace and get their chef special chow fun. WAY BETTER. Mongolian beef: Bland. Not spicy at all. Orange chicken: A fake Chinese food classic. Actually pretty good here but too sweet. Mu shu chicken: Pretty damn good. Sometimes they give you the right wrapper and sometimes they give you the raw egg roll wrappers to use. I know you can use them but they just don't taste good at all. Make sure to ask for the actual mu shu wrapper. Generals chicken: Bland. Eggplant with garlic: Way too sweet. Ma po tofu: Lacking in flavor and just overall not good. If you're desperate I guess it's ok. I've been spoiled with bomb ass homemade ma po tofu my whole life though so this just doesn't cut it for me. Sidenote: $4.75 for rice, soup and an entree?! AND they deliver?! Order them for lunch for a BIG and cheap meal. Oh, FYI... they charge for delivery though! I think it's only about $2 or so but they don't mention that any where on their menu!

Yelp
I work at the Port of Oakland. Food options are extremely limited around the area. It's either walk to one of the roach coaches or make a quick dive into one of the fast food joints. I've driven by Fortune Cookie probably more than a hundred times now, so finally my curiosity got the better of me and I just blindly walked in here during lunch one day. My first thought was "Wow this is cheap". $5 for a huge plate of food? You can't go wrong with those prices, no matter how the food tastes. And thankfully, the food isn't bad at all. I mean, it's not the best quality Chinese food ever. It's greasy and salty, but you get a huge portion of food and you won't be hungry after finishing your meal. Favorites so far have been the Mongolian Beef and General's Chicken. Salty, but pretty tasty. I will say though, that Fortune Cookie has the best Hot & Sour soup I've ever had. I don't even like Hot & Sour soup. I normally just push it away when it's offered as an appetizer at other Chinese restaurants. Here though, I found myself devouring the entire bowl. I don't know what they do differently here, but damn they know what they're doing with their soup. Location alone gives this place a whole star for me. Only about a 2 minute drive from my work, which means I actually have time to eat during my hourly lunch break. Even though it's in the middle of an extremely ghetto neighborhood with Planned Parenthood on one side and a liquor store on the other, the location works perfectly. Service has been pretty nice every time I've come here, which is surprising for the wide variety of customers that I'm sure they get here. I just assume they're glad to not see another problem customer walk in. I'm real glad I actually found a decent place to go for lunch that isn't fast food. Gonna continue to keep on coming here!

Yelp
I discovered this place during my never-ending quest to find decent food establishments that actually deliver in my neighborhood (West Oakland). Thank goodness for Fortune Cookie. The food is great for the price and delivery is FAST. I am obsessed with the hot and sour soup. In fact I'm eating it for breakfast right now. Seriously. Oh and if you like a lot of stuff in your soup (bamboo shoots, tofu, fungi, egg) be sure to ask for it. You always get more when you request it. All the beef items I've tried have been great, but I don't care so much for their chicken. They put a lot of pork in their pork rice noodles, and quite a lot of shrimp in the shrimp fried rice. Can't go wrong there. I actually saw their location for the first time the other day. It's a pretty uninspired location - relatively undecorated dining room, unfinished ceiling, etc. I probably won't ever eat there; it's all about the speedy delivery. Oh yeah, and it's a $15 minimum order, cash, Visa or Mastercard. I know this because I have a menu on my fridge and see it everyday :)

Yelp
Found a flyer from this place on our door last night so decided to give it a try. Called for delivery at 8:00 and was told 40-50 minutes.... 9:00 rolls around so I decided to call and was told "ON THE WAY!". They didn't even ask who I was. 9:30 rolls around and I call again, ring, ring, ring.... I keep trying, no answer! 9:50 the deliver driver calls as he is either lost or outside and we were now getting ready for bed, so we decided to decline the food. Waited nearly 2 hours for delivery, went to bed hungry (by choice after the wait and unresponsiveness)...ruined our night, thank you. Not reliable.

Yelp
I ordered food from here today for dinner 10/6/2014. All my food was pretty good.... Except, my shrimp fried rice had only 4 pieces of shrimp, my general tao chicken was soggy instead of crunchy and tender, oh and the worm I found floating in my wonton soup. That just really killed my experience with this restaurant. I didn't even get sweet and sour sauce for my crab Rangoon. And the fact I gave the driver a $5 tip....ugh. I would like a refund.

Yelp
Not a fan! I would not recommend going to this restaurant. I came here for lunch about a month ago. I live right down the street and if you are a resident of West Oakland, you know that there are not very many restaurants to choose from. So I had to give it a try. I ordered the Mongolian beef because it was the most popular item mentioned on yelp. I also ordered their Chicken Chow Main and Hot&Sour Soup. The chicken chow main was the only item that I actually consumed as for the other items I took a couple bites and decided it belonged in the trash. Gross, the beef was chewy and sitting in a huge puddle of water and sauce filled with MSG. The soup was just weird not very tasty. I will not be returning to this restaurant, i would rather heat up a cup of noodles and eat that.

Yelp
A mediocre review for a mediocre restaurant. Shan Dong is closed on Monday so we chose this out of hat-- I guess it's time to get a new hat. Mongolian beef: Meh. Dry Braised Green Beans: Okay I guess... Honey fried chicken wings: What, you were expecting San Tung? Some tough, some okay, drowned in sauce... The stand out dish was the Bowl full of jello, I mean, Hot & Sour soup. Which was a gelatinous mess. P. only ate one bite. All in All, Not disgusting, but not even presentable enough for a Monday When Shan Dong is closed. Only as a last resort.

Yelp
For the quickie(in a good way) delivery! For the chix wonton soupie For the no msg and low oil request granted For the brown rice option. This place is def a delivery option only. If you actually visit the location you would be bummed out unless you live in the lower bottom(then u already kno the dealio). The ingredients have never disappointed and serving sizes are decent. Price is fair for what you get. A lil extra star for being the fastest noodle in West O.

Yelp
I ordered from the place 3 times. The good thing is they deliver immediately. (if not, they would have gotten a 1 instead of 2). That's it. The bad thing is everything is pretty much terrible. Cause the minimum is $15 per order, I've had their Hot and Sour Soup, Buffalo Wings, Crab Wanton, House Special Fried Rice, Shrimp Fried Rice, Mongolian Beef, and War Wonton Soup. Everything has this chemical smell. Either it's bad, old or something. I actually threw away the Buffalo Wings cause I didn't trust the smell, as if the food is bad and shouldn't be eaten. Trust your nose! Living in West Oakland there isn't a place to order any delivery. But after 3 attempts, I rather do the hike to Chinatown Oakland rather than risk getting sick from this place.

Yelp
Pretty damn good for delivery- s p i c y- but in a good way. (try the hot and sour soup!) free and fast delivery delivered hot, not warm, hot (and we're in berkeley), and super friendly phone service (they suggested that the mongolian beef might be too spicy so he made something custom for me, with veggies too) it doesn't take all that much to make me feel special, but they did! $27 and we'll be fed for days. I'll def order from them again.

Yelp
I lived close to this place, so I have had several items to judge this by. The food in general, is good. The pork fried rice here is really good (for you traditionalists (and I mean American traditionalists)). You'll notice your food is much saucier here than normal (like the mongolian chicken, or beef). Chow mein, not so much. A major turnoff would be the lack of meat placed in some of the dishes. For instance, the kung pao shrimp had probably only four shrimp in it, the curry chicken very little chicken. A major plus is the variety in the vegetables that come in these dishes! Their orange chicken is extra tangy, as is there sweet and sour pork. The sesame chicken comes with the sauce on the side (I don't know why). The service is very friendly, and quick! The fortune cookies are kind of not so good, however (oh well).

Yelp
I love this place. Barbecue pork fried rice and dry fire ribs is the best. I will tell anyone to go here they are a reasonable price.
