Forty 1 North (Newport, Rhode Island) 4 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Unless you can somehow transport yourself to Jay Gatsby’s world of grand estates and garden parties, Newport, Rhode Island is your best bet for evoking jazz-age elegance. The town is famous for its mansions, lovely to drive by and gawk at, but the urban waterfront is the heart of the Newport experience. Forty 1º North is an exceptional new boutique hotel infused with crisp nautical atmosphere and an artistic take on eco-hospitality." - Tablet Hotels

Though I-95 traffic tested our patience, once my partner and I landed at Forty 1° North our vision of a dreamy coastal reconnect came into full view. Newport may be known for its Gilded Age mansions but we felt like we walked into a cool yacht club, both elegant and unpretentious.||We opted for a friendlier price tag and took the city (vs. water) view which, in the end, just encouraged us to explore more of the hotel - and use the extra cash for extra drinks! Our room was sleek, modern, with plenty of special touches: a live plant inside the shower, a large fireplace and Frette linens. ||After a refresh, we went downstairs to the stunning Oval Bar & Lounge which acts as centerpiece and social hub, setting the tone with warm woods and breezy glamour for a glass of champagne. Then we hit The Grill, where dockside dining delivers five-star flavor (happily devoid of steakhouse swagger) and a healthy side of yacht envy. In fact, you’ll spend a decent portion of the meal trying not to openly gawk at boats the size of your childhood home, but the food quickly stole the spotlight.||We shared a delicious plate of housemade spinach cavatelli with burrata, black truffle, peas, and gremolata. And for mains, we went full surf-and-turf: a half lamb rack (him) and grilled jumbo head-on prawns (me) which we stole from one another’s plates more than shared. Secret Tip: There’s a hidden private table tucked-away in the trees where you can also dine privately, under the stars. ||The next day we went whale watching (boats depart just steps from the hotel), hoping to spot something even bigger than the yachts parked out front. Success! We sadly missed the hidden bocce court on the side of the property (nothing says vacation like competitive lawn games with a cocktail in hand), but that will be for next time. We will be back!

I had a large dinner party here in the backroom which they can turn the pool table into a long table. We had 16 people and it was PERFECT. We had the best time!! Since it is inside, if you reserve this area try and have a drink outside first if it is nice! The staff (Morgan & her team) were incredibly helpful, food was so great and drinks were fantastic. Thank you to Riley for helping us get everything all set up as well! Would recommend for a private dinner for a birthday, event, etc!

My husband and I stayed for a night and had the best experience! From the moment we got there we felt like valued guests. The parking and arrival was easy and the personal note in our room was a great touch. The bed was really comfortable and the room was quiet which is not always the case at hotels. Bonus points for the little balcony and view of the water from our room!||We had dinner at the restaurant and it was truly one of the best meals we've had - the calamari was perfection. We loved being able to sit outside by the water and enjoy the view. Our breakfast the next morning was equally delicious! We look forward to coming back again soon!

One of my absolute favorite hotels! You just can’t beat the location and the waterfront dining. Waking up to a stunning view of Newport Beach right outside my window was unforgettable. I slept so well, and—rare for him—my husband said he had one of the best nights of sleep! He especially loved the comforter and pillows.||Our room had a fireplace, which added such a touch of luxury. The vibe, music, and central bar on the first floor create such a fun and inviting atmosphere.||What I care about most in a hotel is the service —and they truly impressed me. The staff remembered my name and went out of their way to be kind and thoughtful.||I absolutely love staying here and highly recommend it!

My husband and I went for dinner to celebrate our anniversary! Christian the bartender makes the most amazing drinks! Srdan was the best waiter very attentive and knowledgeable. Norman the Restaurant Manager was very friendly and cordial and followed up with us a few times. We shared the Tomahawk and had 2 sides. It was by far the best tasting beef I have ever tasted. Cheers to the Chef and all those we mentioned that made our time at 41 North the most amazing experience.

I returned to lovely Newport for the second time this year. It is more beautiful it is compared to the bleakness of winter. I stayed again at Forty 1 North (now most favorite place) and was treated wonderfully! Many of the employees remembered me from my last stay. Their outside restaurant was exquisite and the staff were so friendly and helpful. If you are in Newport, you MUST stay there and you MUST have the seafood tower! Exquisite and fun luxury!

Our server Amanda was extremely accommodating. I am visually impaired and needed her help describing menu items. I ended up taking her recommendation for the tomahawk and the spicy margarita. 10/10 all in all amazing dining experience and impeccable. I will be coming back and recommending this place to all of my friends.

Google
We held a family dinner ahead of our wedding. The staff could not have been more accommodating - we were able to choose between sitting outside or using the more private wine room (we chose the wine room based on the weather). All of our servers were attentive and charming and the manager stopped by to check on us, too. The food was fantastic and it was a terrific night overall.

Yelp
In Newport and decided to check our 41 North for dinner. We loved the outdoor deck! Perfect spot in the corner! The sunset will beautiful there! Service was good! Attentive! Great were mixed well! Steak frites were surprisingly good! Fries, bearnaise - all delicious! The tuna steak with a lemon sauce was also GREAT! The bread service was warm focaccia with olives, butter and oil - yummy! It's pricey, but the view was amazing and the atmosphere relaxed - we will be back!

Yelp
A wonderful dining experience at the Grill at 41 North in downtown Newport. This occasion was particularly special as our friend was returning to Taiwan. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly greeted by the Food and Beverage Manager, Yahaira. She is a delightful young lady--sweet, kind, and friendly, yet very professional. She ensured we had a great table overlooking the water, and I must say, the sunset was incredible! Even if you're not dining, it's worth a visit for the view. There are plenty of spaces to relax, such as the Oval Bar or Library Bar. The fireplace adds a lovely touch of comfort and coziness. When we sat down, our attentive server, Cristian, welcomed us. He is a talented young man who manages both the dining room and the bar, showcasing impressive skills. The food was superb! The new Executive Chef, Alia Asher, even came out to greet us and introduce herself. The dishes were delicious and beautifully presented, with amazing flavors. To start, we chose the bread service and Caviar Osetra. Unlike many places that serve a 'cheap version' of caviar with chips, here it was served in a classic way with homemade Bellinis--truly impressive! For our next course, we had smoked salmon (which also came with homemade Bellinis), tuna tartare (freshly made, topped with a delightful aioli, and accompanied by homemade wonton chips), oysters (served with a special crushed ice mignonette), and a kale salad (the best salad in town so far!). For our entrées, Chef Alia recommended her favorite: the Tomahawk steak, perfectly sliced and served with bone marrow. We also enjoyed scallops and a whole steamed lobster. The pacing of the meal was perfect; we never felt rushed and could savor every bite. We started with cocktails and then moved to an exceptional selection of wines. Overall, this was an unforgettable experience! We are looking forward to see new summer menu created by this very talented Chef! Thank you!

Yelp
Just stopped in for drinks and apps. The apps were not good, we ordered calamari and tuna tartar. The calamari was flavorless and the tartar was full of onions but was not mentioned on the menu. The drinks were fine. The view was good. There are better places in Newport for sure.

Yelp
Love this place. Upscale smaller restaurant with fun bar. We stopped in for lunch during restaurant week and were blown away. Overall, it was the best meal of our trip! Started with French onion soup and Caesar salad. Soup was a bit salty, but both were solid. Cheeseburger and fries were delicious. The salmon over sunchoke accompanied by lentil salad with watermelon radish and saffron... AMAZING! Just looks spectacular and bursting with so many different complimentary flavors!!! Wow! Desserts were also mind blowing. I don't like creme brulee, but theirs was delicious! Chocolate bundino was dense with flavor and just loved the marshmallow swish toasted on top, as well as the caramel and crumb sides! Server was very friendly. Service was a bit slow, but a very enjoyable experience!

Yelp
Food has gone drastically downhill. Rigatoni was cooked until it was mushy and french fries are frozen. Overpriced Applebees quality. Cool place to grab a drink in the summer but skip the food.

Yelp
Stopped by during restaurant week for dinner and I have to say I was pretty impressed. $45 for a 3 course dinner and 1/2 price bottles??? It's an absolute steal. Now the restaurant is gorgeous. But I think they need a little bit more lighting. It's so dark inside that I didn't bother taking any photos of the food. And I'm not sure why but the restaurant is so loud. You can literally be screaming and no one would notice. 1st dish was a French onion soup and Caesar salad. Good size portions and nice flavors. 2nd dish was Steak Frites. The strip was cooked perfectly and fries were crisp. We also ordered the scallops which were delicious. Dessert was Creme Brule and chocolate cake. Everything was perfect. Always surprising to me that they have a 3 star rating but tonight they get a 5 for sure!

Yelp
Great place for drinks outside. If you go through the lobby and then down the stairs, you'll find a little oasis with a fully stocked bar and ample seating. You could also loop around the back on the ground level, but the aforementioned way is much more fun! The bartenders are so kind and attentive - the view is amazing and honestly I love every part of this place. I've been inside for dinner before as well and they have some of the best food and drinks. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Incredablle water view. Also an outdoor enclosed bar and restaurant on the dock. Just had breakfast here so far. It was nice. Peaked at the wine list and there are a lot of good wines for all budgdts. Dont know about dinner yet but will be back.

Yelp
Hotel is a great location. Had the grand suite with great views, very nice furnishings and a great shower. The staff were friendly. Definitely pay for a five star - over $7k for six nights. A number of reasons for the three star rating - service was poor. From having to self park most of the time due to no staff available - outside or at the front desk - while being charged for valet service daily. They didn't even seem to care when we repeatedly mentioned this. The daily service was spotty in the room. One day no face cloths. Next only one set of towels. No vacuuming several days. Dirty dishes and cleaning supplies left on the counter. Just very much a lack of attention to detail across the board. Not what I expect with this level resort and price. It felt like they just weren't ready for guests. We had one meal there - breakfast our last day. Worst meal we had in Newport. Dry toast, overcooked eggs, no seasoning. Multiple requests to get butter, juice that was ordered, ketchup and salt and pepper. Again, friendly staff but just no idea what good service is supposed to be. They have all the bones of a great resort - they need to train their staff and management. We were able to shorten our stay by one night as they were able to book the room which was great. When they offered refund for the Friday night, instead of offering refund of that night's rate of $1450, they tried to refund the cheapest night of $800 until I argued the point. Won't stay here again.

Yelp
Srdan our waiter was very attentive and was very personable . We had the salmon and swordfish and both were excellent. The creamed spinach was too salty but ok. The dining area and overall atmosphere is excellent. Plenty of room and spotless. The pineapple upside down dessert was also very good.

Yelp
awful - service, food and experience --- never again. Apologies for no details but never again from here.
google avatar

Raychelle P.

Yelp
The Valet Manager Maureen, was so inconceivably disrespectful and rude. As a local trying to pay to park, I understand the hotel might have events and no daily parking. There is no signage that states when they are not doing daily parking services and when I was parking and ready to pay, she ran towards my car and aggressively stated "No parking, too many events, NO." A simple "sorry, no daily parking" would've been sufficient but I got a rather rude statement with a full plate of attitude. All the other valet workers are so kind and polite, maybe the manager needs to take a hint from them!

Yelp
I went to 41 North after proposing to my girlfriend in Newport to meet up with our friends and family. The manager Carol did an amazing job helping me plan everything and our server Johnna was incredible! We had a group of about 25 of us and the food, drinks, and location is unbeatable! I will definitely be back thank you for everything!!

Yelp
Love this hotel. Unfortunately was not able to book a room reservation at this hotel because they did not have any available. But did enjoy a wonderful glass of wine at theta. Decor is beautiful and I'm sure the restaurant menu selection must be amazing. Looking forward to staying at this establishment next time I'm in Newport

Yelp
I've reviewed all types of establishments serving all kinds of food to all kinda folks. This picturesque bayside Newport, RI bistro was underwhelming in several aspects. We had a great table on the water in the shade beside several multi-million dollar yachts. Limited entrees ranged from $28 - $128. Side were $12. Service was ok, but not memorable for the type of establishment. Portions were small. The bread looked good, but we didn't know we had to order it separate. If I'm in Newport again I will visit one of the numerous similar restaurants.

Yelp
Excellent food and service! Been for lunch and dinner, and it does not disappoint. The clam chowder is possibly my favorite ever! Shoutout to Serdan who took care of us last time. He is welcoming, attentive, and just a really lovely person.

Yelp
Beautiful views on the dock here at Forty 1 North. My friend and I split a bottle of wine and some charcuterie while watching the Memorial Boat Parade. We had a beautiful view and enjoyed our snack. Our group came back the next morning for brunch. Although I wasn't able to go myself, the review from everyone was that the pancakes were awesome, but the rest of the experience was just so-so. I'm looking forward to seeing it again for myself, because the view is worth the trip!

Yelp
I had dinner at Forty 1 North. I was in Newport for a conference and the timing coincided with restaurant week. I was with a party of eight other conference attendees. The restaurant was fairly within walking distance of the hotel where I was staying, which was the Newport Marriott. Our group had a reservation and the restaurant seated us in a private room. Having the space to ourselves was nice and allowed us to have conversation without distracting or being distracted by people at the bar area. The restaurant is very chic looking on the inside. I recommend trying out Forty 1 North if you have the opportunity to go during restaurant week and taking advantage of the prix fixe menu. With prix fixe, you get a multi-course meal at a fixed total price. The prix fixe menu here included an appetizer, entrée, and dessert. Though it was a limited selection from the regular menu, the prix fixe still had many options. I had a seafood risotto and chocolate ganache dessert; really good.

Yelp
Came here Saturday as it used to be one of my favorite Newport spots! The hostesses were really sweet so it was off to a good start. Our waiter was amazing at first he took our drink and food order quickly & came back with the jumbo shrimp cocktail. The jumbo shrimp cocktail didn't taste right. It was fishy smelling and tasting? I don't like shrimp cocktail like that & it was almost $40 for the order of the 4 jumbo shrimp. I then ordered a filet for dinner and it was very bland. At this point our waiter disappeared after promising to get our drink order in for last call. Luckily the bartender noticed and came over and helped us out with another round. I was on vacation and after finishing my meal I wanted a few shots- still no waiter. It was until the restaurant was literally closed that he came back over and gave our bill. The food and service definitely went downhill IMMENSELY... I was really disappointed in the service , shrimp cocktail, the filet & the waiter. However 2 stars for the beautiful view, ambiance, atmosphere and the grounds. Don't know if I'd come back after this abysmal visit!

Yelp
Incredible ambiance, service and food. The deck is gorgeous for sunset! Great view of the incredible yachts docked.

Yelp
This place is just GORGEOUS!!!! Came here in the off season (November) so no outside seating for us... its got this beautiful sculpture of gold seashells that's just stunning and let's patrons know off the bat that you're in for an opulent experience. Came here for a birthday dinner with a childhood friend and IT WAS EVERYTHING!!!! The view of the water and the bridge in the background at night was breathtaking. Great place to have terrific meal with anyone; or to enjoy a bourbon in a comfortable wingback chair by the fire (which I plan to do next time). Also great for special occasions including popping the question. In my opinion it's the best place to do it on Thames Street no matter what the season is. Our server Drew was exceptional and the food... Foodie Heaven! The squid ink pasta was so good, I'd drive a couple hours for it! And compliments yo the chef on making the steak perfectly Pittsburg style! If you're in the neighborhood - treat yourself. You won't regret it!

Yelp
This establishment was our second stop of the day. Years ago this was a standout restaurant in the Thanes Street district called Christie's. Forty 1 North is truly a beautiful restaurant nestled in between yachts that are larger than most mansions. I was hoping I'd run into Captain Lee from Below Deck but to no avail. Food and drinks were being served in their outdoor bar and we grabbed two seats after about 5 minutes. Their signature cocktails averaged $16.00. My sister ordered a Bed Light and I asked for a Margarita which wasn't on the menu. Once I got my drink I was disappointed that it was served in a small rocks glass with tons of rocks! (ice). I literally had 3 sips and it was gone. The bar was tended by 3 young men probably in their 20's and pleasant demeanor. Nothing in the menu really popped out at me, but their prices did. Another patron Mentioned that when the establishment first opened, you needed to pay for a yearly membership just to be able to go there. After half an hour we asked for the check. I can honestly say that was the smallest Margarita I ever had, with the biggest price tag of 18. I didn't even ask for their best tequila! A Bud Light will run you 8.00. It's a nice place to visit once, or if you're one of those folks who owns one of those yachts parked at their slip. I took some pics of the interior which wasn't yet open for business. Scenery 4 stars Prices 2 stars Service 3 stars Overall 3.5 stars

Yelp
Went on 7/6/24 party of 6ppl in the restaurant. Was the most disappointing restaurant experience in a long time. Seated at 6:45pm, ordered apps and bread ....which took 60 minutes to arrive...1 calamari and 1 bread service! Entrees came about 40 minutes later (100 minutes after seated). 2 of the entrees were sent back as inedible. Lots of staff running around but no one seemed t be in charge. We complained to our waiter twice and he said that he had spoken to 2 different managers and they did nothing. The restaurant was not that busy...there were 4 empty tables within 20 ft of our table at peak time on the Saturday night of July 4th weekend! Overall, food was mediocre at very best, that being generous. There was no table visit by mgmt in spite of our complaints, indicating that the mgmt does not care about the customer's dining experience and that is inexcusable. The prices are top of the market and certainly not worth what you get. This place is a perfect example of taking advantage of their location on the water with jacked up prices and low quality food and mediocre service. We live closeby and are year-round patrons of many restaurants in Newport that deserve our patronage. This place does not. Shame on them. We understand that things do not always go as planned, but when stuff happens, mgrs need to put their big boy/girl pants on and go apologize and do something to make up for the mistakes. Buy a drink/desserts/ bring more bread. Hospitality is an aquired skillset that this restaurant and its mgmt do not practice in any way. Will never return and suggest that you do not ruin your night there like we did.

Yelp
A nice place to be someone who enjoys dim lighting, and really good food. I was looking for a place that could accommodate several people with different palates and have different items on the menu. The restaurant is not easily seen from the main road. There is a large deep parking lot that leads to the waterfront and as you approach the place, there is a large neon like "41" on the upper left side of the restaurant. Tou climb just a few stairs and enter on the left. As you walk in the place looks small however the place has a hug dining area outside on the deck near the water. I believe outside can hold double the amount of people than inside. Veronica was our server, but she felt like part of our group. She is from Newport and she has the innocence and demeanor to make a perfect dining experience. She also has the experience in customer service to allay concerns or discomfort anyone may have. She is a savvy as she is sweet. You can tell her sweetness comes naturally and she can probably convinced you to try everything on the menu. That's the mark of great service. We ordered one of the seafood towers with an assortment of lobster, clams, oysters and shrimps. All were very fresh. The crabcakes were amazing along with the scallops in a delicious broth. I shared the 30 day aged 32oz ribeye, and we also had several sides including mashed potatoes, sauteed spinach and grilled mushrooms. The mushrooms were incredibly delicious. The mash and spinach held their own as well. My party of 7 tried several cocktails that were all well prepared. Finally had the chocolate lava and creme brulee desserts were ordered reluctantly. Now imagine noone had room for dessert but in the end there was nothing left. By the time I wanted to try the chocolate lava, it was already gone. I can imagine in the middle of summer how this place is packed with dining customers. I would highly recommend this place especially during sunset. It will set the mood for the entire evening, especially if you are fortunate to have Victoria with you.

Yelp
If I could leave no stars, I would. Waited a half hour for our drinks, microwaved food and awful service. Do better. 0 out of fucking 10.

Courtney S.

Yelp
First time there, we asked the servers about what they recommended. NO one had any answers, because they said they had not tried anything! REALLY! Wines by the glasses were so unimpressive. Ok, tried it a second time and it was even worse! Food is so unimpressive for the cost. The only good thing I would recommend is their calamari, anything else. NO!

Yelp
A very high expectation dashed quickly. A strange 20$ parking fee even though they didn't have valet. A very poor showing of service for a restaurant that likes to think highly of their quality. The manager was a pompous ass, to be nice. Received a call, email and text to make sure I knew of the 25$/person fee if the reservation was canceled. The bottle of red I ordered was plopped in front of us, no pour, taste or care to ask if the $100+ bottle was good to go...Never had that happen before. Presentation of food was disappointing. On the other hand, the salmon, tuna, and swordfish were phenomenal!!! The chef(s) is a master of her/his craft. I will not return to this restaurant, it is not the caliber of service that I would expect. It's sad because the food was so tasty. The floor manager should be replaced. I wish I asked for his name before I left.

Sasha A.

Yelp
Been here many times in the summer at the outside bar. Last night was the last, horrendous service by the bartenders. It gets worse every time I come here. The wait for a drink is interminable. 3 bartenders and they couldn't keep up with the crowd. The bar and outside tables weren't even full. I started counting the number of people who sat or came up to the bar for drinks and never got served, 14. All left and walked away. The people who did wait were lucky to get a drink within 30 minutes. 1 Pinot Grigio and a domestic beer 30 bucks. They try to give off an air of high class but fall far short. No apologies from the bartenders for the wait. The bartender types who won't even glance your way for fear that you will ask for something. 4 people came up to bar and ordered martinis. Bartender said he had no martini glasses. He could use a different glass or they could wait 15 minutes for clean glasses. They opted to go back to their table and get their dirty martini glasses, brought them to the bar and he used them without even washing the glasses. Just incredible for what this venue tries to portray.

Yelp
We have been going here since 2014. Last night we went for an anniversary dinner with friends and had the absolute most perfect experience. Of course the food was excellent as always but the service was unmatched by our server Srdan. He was so kind and personable made great recommendations. I really don't think I've ever had a better waiter anywhere. Thank you again Srdan for making our night so special!!!

Yelp
Sadly came again, sat down at a tall table near the bar. Wanted a drink and something to eat. Same thing. Sat 10 minutes. No one came over. We left watching 4 bartenders and 5 servers standind around doing nothing. Done forever. Where is the manager watching this go on.

Yelp
I had dinner at Forty 1 North about 2 years ago and had a lovely meal. I recently had dinner there again and had a very bad experience! The staff was not what I would describe as friendly. I ordered a steak well done and it was served rare! The side portions, which were supposed to be for two people were very small and not hot. The prices had gone up considerably which I would not have minded except for the very poor food and attitude of the servers. My advice is dine elsewhere!!!

Yelp
A phenomenal stay at this design-centric waterfront boutique hotel. Ideal location for shopping, water activities, visiting nearby historic sites and the best sunset bar in town. I loved the shimmering Blott Kerr-Wilson seashell sculpture at the entryway. My niece and I were lucky enough to secure the enormous Grand Street, with unobstructed harbor views from the living area and large balcony. A cozy corner nook with a chaise lounge was my go-to reading spot. We also had a blast meeting other guests and indulging in a wine/food tasting at the Oval Bar fermentation class. For dinner in The Grill we zigzagged between Russian Ossetra Caviar and Whole Steamed Lobster one night, and Wagyu Steak and Duck Fat French Fries the next. I came home remembering something very specific about my stay, besides the obvious highlights: a live plant discreetly tucked inside the shower shelf. Sometimes it's the little things.

Carolyn K.

Yelp
We love the location of this hotel-park and walk. It has a nice vibe and staff is very friendly. We arrived to a very nice welcome gifts-so thoughtful. The bottled water left for us at night is a nice touch. Room equipped with bathrobes, slippers, hairdryer, umbrella, safe. However we were disappointed in the condition of our room- stained carpet, peeling wallpaper, phones didn't work (had to use my cell to order breakfast)- little things but at this price, they are off putting. One small table and a single chair so when our room service arrived on a small tray we had to eat it in bed- surprised that it didn't arrive on a rolling table or at least a cart.

Yelp
Not too pleased with the evening we had here at 41 North. First off, there was confusion amongst two servers who thought the other one was going to be waiting on us. So we were seated more than 5 minutes before being greeted & watered. Then, there was a bug in my drink. Something else in the water glass. Not thrilled but still providing some beautiful pictures.

Yelp
Beautiful spot. Waitress couldn't get us the right menu At 7pm they ran out of two menu items. The bill had the wrong price for an item($8 more). Food was decent otherwise. Delicious Parker rolls that we had to ask for Probably won't go there again

Yelp
The cushions out from are like sitting on paper plates wrapped in cloth! I almost wanted to go buy them a cushion

Yelp
This was one of the worst dining experiences of my adult life. An 8:15 PM reservation, made by the concierge of the Newport Marriott Resort and Spa, at The Grill produced seating at 8:59 PM. I arrived at 7:45 PM so that I could have a leisurely drink at the Oval Bar before dinner. I shared my plan with the maitre d' and indicated that I would accept seating in advance, should it become available. He showed me to the bar promising to return (10-15 steps away) when my table was ready, he never did. I initiated three separate visits to the Matre d''s station between 8:15 and 8:59 to repeated excuses that included "I cannot find servers to serve you." He then attempted to take me to an outside service area where a wedding party was having a joyful and raucous time, that was not the dining experience I was seeking, so I refused. Eventually seated, disappointingly, our young server did not know the source or names of the oysters on the menu and had little to no knowledge of the other items on the menu. My order was placed hoping for the best. The food was excellent, being well prepared and presented. The oysters, of unknown source or name, were delicious, with a mild metallic flavor and deep-sea saltiness. The salmon, crispy on the outside and tender and flaky on the inside, was lightly seasoned and so did not detract from the essential salmon flavor. The squid ink pasta is a uniquely prepared culinary masterpiece of rich Italian flavors and contrasting textures. Too bad the chef is blind - to the shenanigans of the dining room. Good food is a necessary pre-condition but does not equate to a good dining experience.

Yelp
If I was going to direct a site specific modernized update of the Great Gatsby, Forty 1 North would be my top choice for the setting. Situated just steps away from bustling Thames Street, you'd never believe how calm, tranquil, and lovely this chic hotel / restaurant really is! Whether you're here for an early morning yoga class (complimentary smoothies and coffee provided!), a swanky dinner under the shadow of the mega yachts docked by the patio, or a simple drink and dessert at the elegant bar, you're in for a total treat! However, all this glitter and fabulousness does have a hefty price tag attached to it. This is a place for the Daisy Buchanans and Jay Gatsbys to flex their expense accounts and go ham on $18 cocktails and $378 seafood towers. It's decadent, for sure, and if you can afford such a memorable experience, you won't be disappointed. For those of us who are ballin' on a budget, I highly recommend visiting for dessert, like we did tonight! They have a few selections, including homemade Zeppoles (Italian fried dough bites), served hot and fresh, and a yummy sounding Chocolate Fondant Cake. We ended up choosing (at the recommendation of our awesome server, Chase) the Ice Cream Sandwich, which changes seasonally. The current offering features chewy peanut butter cookies sandwiched around a creamy house made banana ice cream, and rolled in roasted peanuts. The dish is garnished with fresh banana and caramel sauce, and is perfect to share (or not!) It's also super Instagram friendly - as I love to say, "The iPhone eats first, after all!" All in all, Forty 1 North is a great stop for a special occasion or a pick me up if you need to add some pizzazz to your evening. We had an excellent time here tonight, and can't wait to return for more sweets in the future!

Yelp
Went here for brunch over the summer and it was really nice! Good food and service, and the atmosphere was lovely. Our table was practically on the water but there was a roof outdoors to block out the sun. Great place to catch up with friends!

Yelp
Went to a wedding here, and was thoroughly unimpressed with the venue. The dinner was served ice cold, the cassoulet portion was far too small, and no one asked how anyone wanted their meat cooked. The prime rib barely could cross into the "rare" category; I'm not sure it saw heat for longer than a minute.

Yelp
I have been here many times for drinks and never had an amazing experience, but have never had a bad enough experience to not return again- that is until this weekend. I can honestly say this was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had in my life. Most disorganized restaurant I've ever been to. We were sat by a manager and told we had to order from the bar which is fine. I went up to order and had to wait 15 minutes for a bartender to help me (there were 4 of them and the bar was not even full) until I finally went and asked the hostess for help. When they finally took my order and I returned to our seats, my friends were being kicked out by a blonde woman (who we assume was a different manager). Luckily at this point I had made friends with a group of older women at the bar who said we could have their seats. When we finally sat down which was about 35 minutes after placing our order, the same bartender who took our order asked what we would like to drink to which I reminded him we had already ordered. He seemed flustered but got our drinks. We then sat waiting for another 45 minutes for our food (which at this point had been ordered an hour and 15 minutes before) and no one checking on us. It was absolute chaos, the bartenders were dropping bottles behind the bar, ignoring customers and gossiping with their friends instead of doing their job. Again- the bar was not full at any point during this 2 hour experience. Finally, a very very sweet bar back who heard our conversation asked if he could help us find our food. At this point we were just going to pay for our drinks and leave because we were convinced they never rang it in. The very sweet bar back found our food downstairs sitting under heat lamps and let us know the bartender had rung it in for downstairs instead of upstairs. Our food was stale and crusty as you can imagine clam pasta and a filet mignon would be after sitting for an hour. I took a few bites of my food and was scared to finish it because it was so gross from sitting out for so long and I was scared to get food poisoning. No one came to check on us and no one apologized for the horrible experience (except the bar back - he was the only redeeming part of this experience). The bartender came over and gave us our bill, with our food covered in our napkins and gave us our $265 bill. We paid it even though we did not eat the majority of our food and left because there was no point in even trying to speak to management when they obviously have no idea what's going on either what with the seating fiasco of earlier. My family spends all summer (and a lot of weekends throughout the rest of the year) in Newport, my siblings have worked at restaurants in Newport throughout college, and my sister and brother live here year round so we luckily have many more weekends to enjoy food elsewhere but Newport is a vacation spot and if I had been here vacationing and had this experience I would have been extremely upset and it would have put a damper on my entire weekend. I will advise friends and family visiting to avoid forty one north at all costs going forward and they will never get a dollar from me again. My advice to management is to communicate with one another and understand what policies actually are because clearly no one is on the same page here.

Yelp
I was hesitant to come and give this place a try after reading the reviews. This review is only for the restaurant and food as I did not stay here but did dine here. Great setting and great food. Yes it's overpriced and the portions aren't as big as other places but the setting and mood itself is worth it. Yes the servers can be more attentive but these days it's asking a lot. Check them out but just except to wait a bit for service.

Yelp
Cozy hotel in the heart of Newport on Thames! It's within walking distance of pretty much everything. My husband and I have visited Newport quite a few times in the last couple of years. Usually we do a day trip but this time we decided to spend the night. We booked the room a couple of days before and went with the Harbor View Suite. CHECKING IN: Upon arriving, the valet guys promptly came around to help. They took our bags and brought it up to the room immediately (bags arrived before we got up to our room). Entering the front of the hotel up the stairs, you walk by this beautiful wall made of shells. The front desk is actually just a desk with a laptop; threw me for a second. The girl was welcoming and polite and our check-in process was seamless (they didn't ask us for ID though. We stay at many hotels and that was the first time. Anyway.) The hotel reminds me a bit of a cruise ship (but obviously smaller), with the staircase and the bar/restaurant area. We stayed on the second floor and had a beautiful view. The hotel was not crowded, I only saw a few other guests. Maybe it was because we stayed Sunday-Monday? PARKING: Valet, $30/day. It's a large lot and the cars are spaced out reasonably, which is hard to find in Newport! OUR ROOM: Very spacious, king size bed, sliding doors out to a balcony with a table and chairs. All of the balconies are connected, separated by some potted plants - so you could technically walk right into the balcony of the people next door. The bar area in the room is well stocked, and you get an iPad in the room with all the hotel/local information. Apparently you can buy the iPad LOL! There's a price list in there too. The bathroom was spacious and very comfortable. The soaking tub is huge! There's also a bookcase opposite the tub if you'd like to do some reading. I also appreciated the space at the foot of the tub where you could set down a drink, book, laptop, whatever. Bath products are Malin + Goetz. My only complaint with the bathroom is the sink - the water wouldn't drain and we had to just remove the stopper completely. Not sure if that's what we were supposed to do? hmm. After that it was fine. DINING: We had a late lunch at The Grill overlooking the water. Can't beat the views! I ordered the lobster roll, and my husband, the surf & turf burger. Both were delicious. The fries are amazing! Our waitress was very nice, efficient, and the food was served promptly. She remembered us when we went back for brunch the next day! Many come to the restaurant just for dinner and are not staying at the hotel - we didn't have the option to charge our meal to the room (not a problem or anything, just thought I'd mention it). The crowd in general seems to be 30s-50s, with a few kids on vacation with their families. It was not rowdy, but not overly formal either. Perfectly balanced I thought. BAR: We sat at the bar for bites and drinks to watch the sunset. While the service was good, it took some time to get started. The bartenders were busy trying to serve all the guests. Perhaps they could hire one or two more? Otherwise the experience was great. Drinks were great and the food was served promptly. I don't know why this place doesn't have better reviews. Yeah, it's not a cheap place, but you get what you pay for. Also, being from Manhattan, you develop a different idea of "expensive". Can't wait to come back, there's no place in Newport I'd rather stay.

Yelp
Avoid the restaurant at all cost 1Calamari $19.00 1SpaghettiApp $18.00 2CaesarSalad $36.00 1GingerAle $5.00 Subtotal TaX $6.24 Total $84.24 ...b 4 tip Do not eat here. Noise level very high The Salads looked like last weeks. It also had a anchovies in. Why Spaghetti app was ok but cold. Wait staff had attitudes. I looked as though the place was out of control. Last but most importantly the price. If you want to piss away your money this is the place. Don't get me wrong I do go to high price restaurants. The ones I go to have quality food and are prices right for what you get. Go to The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar for a much better experience

Yelp
Our experience at Forty 1 North was very disappointing. Having been there in the past, we were very much looking forward to our afternoon dining outside at the Grill. The bright spot in our day was our awesome server, Mary. She was so gracious and did everything she could to compensate for the lack of everything else. It was the worst dining experience we've had in 20 years. It took three tries and 30 minutes to get our bottle of champagne correct. There were no olives for martinis. Our food was lackluster. The three hamburgers ordered were not cooked to specifications. And to top it all off, the valet lost the keys to one of the cars in our party. It will be a long while before we give Forty 1 North another try. Thankfully, Mary saved our day.

Yelp
We booked 41 North in February 2020 for a ceremony and reception in October of 2020. Like many couples, we were taken by surprise when COVID-19 broke out across the country. Given that my fiance is in the wedding industry - we knew that there would be some curveballs to our plans and that we would need to be flexible and patient. What has happened to us in the months throughout this process has been exceptional. Forty One North has shown quite a remarkable demonstration of unprofessionalism, inexperience, and pure ignorance over the last 5 months. I give my most sincere recommendation to not book this venue in the hopes that no one has to experience this in the future. Forty One North has refused to work with us in any capacity. Throughout this pandemic, we've tried to re-schedule, downsize/re-plan, and be flexible but have fallen on deaf ears since March. We've literally been ignored. We've spoken to 3 or 4 managers that have been unable to help but promised call backs that never happened. They never told us that the event coordinator has been laid off since April and the hotel staff/restaurant staff refuse/aren't able to assist with the event because "it's not their job" - as one manager put it. In other words - the owner laid off their event staff and put no one in place to even field questions about their clients booked events. I'm not sure if they treat everyone like this - but our experience has been terrible. We're just trying to make ends meet and have postponed our wedding until 2022. To upper management: Figure it out.

Yelp
Honestly, just skip this place. My new husband and I booked the hotel for a quick mini-moon after our wedding. We were expecting a beautiful hotel with great service. Booking this place is the only thing about our trip that we regret. The good: located really close to tons of restaurants and right on the water. Great view of the sunset. The bad: honestly everything else. The parking fee is ridiculous and shouldn't be required for guests based on the cost to stay. The rooms are pretty outdated and while clean they aren't anything to write home about. I've had similar rooms at a Marriott and since we booked what we thought was a higher end hotel we were disappointed. Lastly, the staff (other than the bartender) were rude and unhelpful. On our first night we noticed a really bad bleach smell in our room. In the morning we mentioned it to the front desk staff and they said they'd deal with it while we were out. We didn't get back until after dinner around 11pm. When we walked in the bleach smell was so over powering. It honestly felt like somebody had dropped a full bottle on the floor. They had opened the windows but since it was early April it was freezing so that wasn't a solution. I went downstairs to speak with someone and was told "there is nothing we can do." My husband wasn't satisfied with that answer and went down to speak with them. They eventually gave us a new room albeit with a lot of resistance and were disgruntled that we had bothered them. Lastly, there was nobody at the front desk overnight I had to go searching for a staff member. At what is considered a "luxury" hotel I would have expected the desk to be constantly attended - it made me feel unsafe.
