"If you’re looking for South Bank views, or to whisper the UK’s most thrilling sentence, “I think my shoulders are burning”, say hello to Forza Wine at the National Theatre. This romance-ready restaurant has a large rooftop terrace that thrives on orange wine, rich garlic butter slathered on fancy toast, and groups of friends sharing inventive seasonal soft serve. Should the frozen picantes embolden you, serenade your date with Waterloo Sunset. Or Cry Me A River, pending the evening’s success." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, rianne shlebak

"It’s very easy to romanticise your life while looking out at the South Bank at sunset—especially when you’re on your third glass of orange wine and insist on holding a cornichon like you’re the protagonist of a Jean-Luc Godard film. All of the above can be achieved out on Forza Wine at the National Theatre’s terrace. They specialise in simple, sunshine dishes, done right—think burrata drizzled in lemon, chilli-kick mussels, and some form of fancy seasonal soft serve. Whether you’re on the riverside terrace or a green banquette in the dining room, it’s prime date night territory. " - jake missing, rianne shlebak, heidi lauth beasley, sinead cranna

"Until the blessed day that Dolly Alderton finally launches a matchmaking service for Extremely Cultured Podcast Listeners, the next best thing is Forza Wine at The National Theatre. The name of the game here is culture (secure tickets to the show downstairs) and flirting (secure a bottle of orange wine out on their terrace). The twinkling-light views of the South Bank and simple, sophisticated European small plates will set the scene for romance. Come sundown, prove chivalry isn’t dead by requesting a blanket for two." - jake missing, rianne shlebak, sinead cranna, heidi lauth beasley

"Can orange wine operate as a matchmaker? Ten minutes out on Forza Wine’s South Bank terrace, featuring views of the Thames and a not insignificant amount of PDA, and we knew that the answer is a resounding yes. Above the National Theatre, it’s from the same people behind Peckham’s leading negroni, nibbles, and nice views spot. But here it channels that unique whiff of charm championed by Jeff Goldblum and Cubitts enthusiasts everywhere. And the seasonal Italian-ish small plates—mussels with 'nduja, garlicky butter beans—are the kind of thing you always think you can make at home before accidentally drowning some unsuspecting cavolo nero in Hellmann’s. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch While the sprawling alfresco terrace is where to charmingly hum Waterloo Sunset to someone you fancy, after dark the dining room is moody, broody, and importantly, buzzing. Friends on the ivy banquette sincerely cosplay as Michael Billington after a show and cultured couples nurse one last Campari spritz alongside the signature Custardo, an affogato-meets-Bird’s lovechild. Hot tip for spontaneous hot nights incoming: there's a walk-in terrace on the floor below. A reduced menu is served, but make no mistake, wherever you sit at Forza Wine, the flirting potential is endless. Food Rundown photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Toast, Parsley & Confit Garlic Butter There simply isn’t any way to describe this toast without using the word ‘slab’. This rich butter and great bread medley has the capacity to leave you full after approximately four bites. It’s a definite sharer and a warning for our more-is-more garlic heads: the butter is delightful but it might not pack that full-throttle garlic hit you’re looking for. Coppa & Cornichons Nothing fancy and yet, this is a ham meets gherkin one-two punch that you definitely want on your table. Bonus points if you trot out some GCSE-level French when discussing the cornichons. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Burrata Well well well, if it isn’t our dairy sweetheart in action. It's a classic that Forza Wine likes to remix with fresh, seasonal sidekicks. Our pick is the zesty lemon burrata that—in a plot twist we all probably could have predicted—is exponentially improved by more cheese, specifically nutty pecorino. Butter Beans, Mussels, Chilli, Garlic & White Wine Behold, a dish that reads like our shopping list when the weather hits a very promising 18 degrees. We’ve had better mussels in London but the creamy butter beans, combined with a tickle of heat from the chilli, is just the thing to trick your mind into thinking you don’t have a vitamin D deficiency. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Clotted Cream And Strawberry Soft Serve, Meringue Picture the ice cream man in a linen chore jacket, with a subscription to a wild rhubarb newsletter, and you’re on your way to understanding the changing soft serve at Forza Wine. We’ve tried several, including the buttery panettone soft serve and the warming spiced apple version. This unabashedly rich take on strawberries and cream really packs that centre court Wimbledon mentality and it’s one of our favourites. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Orange Wine Calling anyone who has uttered the words "I’m just not really into rosé anymore" while swirling a glass of orange, this one’s for you. Forza Wine leans in hard to orange wine with a light, entry-level funk option on tap, but our pick of the bunch is the xarel-lo, that’s a beachside peach and honey flavour party." - Heidi Lauth Beasley

An unexpected venue at the National Theatre! I went there for lunch, and the host was super nice and handsome. The menu was very eclectic and unique. I absolutely loved the specials that day, especially the Italian pumpkin lentils with hazelnuts. The cod was cooked to perfection, and the baked potatoes—oh my, absolutely delicious! Plus fantastic view over the River Thames.

Came here for the lunch deal - had a lovely meal with a glass of wine included for £15 which is such a fab price for the quality. Food was amazing and the staff were really knowledgeable on the wines. Excellent !

I loved this place for a nice glass of wine and small delicious plates. Perfect for a quick dinner before a play. Everything we had was great. They change the menu very often. Will definitely go back.

This restaurant is lovely. Would have been a great place to visit in the summer. For the price tag on the service charge, I personally didn't think it delivered. However, 3 of the 5 food items we ordered were very tasty and the cocktails, especially the old fashioned, were perfectly made. Disappointed by the Cava - it wasn't chilled enough. Food in order of what I liked most to least: chickpeas with salt cod, the aubergine dish, the cauliflower dish, the potatoes (I don't think I'd order that again) and the parsley butter bread (it tasted like grass). Loved the Custardo - I would definitely go back just for a few of those! Cost was about £55 pp including service and 2 drinks pp. Definitely worth a visit!

Through the off menu podcast I heard about here and the custardo! I had a custardo (espresso with custard) it tasted sensational, a bit like a warm coffee ice cream! Was one of the tastiest drinks I had. It's a shame I had the frozen cherry wine afterwards as that was also fantastic but the custardo just pipped it to the post with being one of the best drinks. The autumn negroni was also nice but could not compete. Very smokey. Need to go back for some food now!

Just had a beautiful lunch at the NT at Forza Wine. Reasonably priced small plates matched with good wine in the sunshine. What else do you need? Oh yes, great service, and we had that too. Must come back to try that lower terrace bar.

Absolutely wonderful, food was so delicious/fresh/delightful and plates very generous. Super value for excellent service, wonderful drinks and meal. We had a super long day in London and were so exhausted; we felt really relaxed and taken care of. Don’t think twice, come here and have a frozen marg. Make sure to book though, ideally in the dining hall. Wine is fantastic too, of course.

So happy to finally have a natural wine spot on the south bank! Great food, great wine, great playlist, great architecture, great interior design… and great terrace! What more can you ask for?! Can’t wait to go back!
