16 Best Hotels in Iceland, From Rural Lodges to Reykjavik Boutiques | Condé Nast Traveler

"Impossible to miss as the lone hotel for miles, this property is perfectly tucked against moss, waterfalls, and an anchoring mountain, with massive windows and moody interiors that highlight the landscape; the front desk goes above and beyond to book tours and upgrades, and on the culinary side I’d spring for the Dream Feast tasting menu or try the grilled arctic char." - Erika Owen, James Taylor

Our Readers' Favorite Iceland Resorts of 2023

"Set at the foot of Hvannadalshnúkur, this lodge lets guests wake up beside a glacial lagoon amid a landscape that feels otherworldly. The property pairs dramatic views with a memorable dining program, highlighted by a tasting menu nicknamed the “Dreamfeast,” which showcases artfully rendered Nordic specialties." - Brad Japhe Brad Japhe Brad Japhe is a journalist specializing in food, beverage, and travel. Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon (Hnappavellir, Iceland) 4 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Perfectly placed for a ramble around the south coast of Iceland, Fosshótel Glacier Lagoon is one of a new wave of hotels that combine contemporary architecture and design with views of the island’s extraordinary landscapes — and access to some even more extraordinary ones, including the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Skaftafell National Park. Rooms look out through vast windows, and showcase the warm side of Nordic modernism; the restaurant, meanwhile, is an upscale one with a sensible focus on local produce and Icelandic flavors. The nearby black-sand beach is a must-see, as are the Northern Lights, for which the front desk provides an overnight wake-up call." - Tablet Hotels

Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon | Best places to stay in Iceland

"You can’t miss this imposing hotel as you drive along the south coast: clad in black timber and glass, its blocky, architectural profile stands out against the hills like a contemporary sculpture. It’s part of the Islandshotel group, which is known for its contemporary decor and luxurious, modern style. The Glacier Lagoon is up there with the best of the group: chic rooms, picture windows and an ultra-refined restaurant make this one of the best places to stay on the south coast. Skaftafell National Park is only 30km northwest, and (despite the name) Jokulsarlon is roughly the same distance to the northeast. These are two of Iceland’s top outdoor nature attractions – making this a great base for wilderness fans. " - Oliver Berry

We had a great two night stay at Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon. We used this location as a jumping off point for glacier trekking anf glacier lagoon activities, which erre about 23 minutes drive from the hotel. Our room was comfortable, modern, and we had a great view of aheep grazing out front. The property is modern and clean. I will say, our room was unbearably warm in October and we had to keep the window open. There is a bar with plenty of seating and a bar food menu and a restaurant upstairs with table service. We had dinner one evening in the restaurant and ordered the salmon and lamb, bith were delicious. We also opted for the breakfast buffet one morning and while expensive, it was delicious. There isn't a lot around so your options are limited. We loved the hot tubs and sauna and it was so relaxing after all of our outdoor adventures. They also have a laundry service which allowed us to refresh a few of our clothing items.

We really enjoyed our night here and wish we had stayed longer. The hotel was incredible and the staff super kind. The dinner in the restaurant was delicious. We made sure to use the hot tub which was a nice way to end the day after hiking a glacier.

Lovely hotel, woodsy vibe. Nice hot tubs out back. Bit of a weird setup as you are walking past the restaurant in tone and slippers to get to the spa/hot tubs. Nice bar area. Aurora wake up calls were perfect as we got to see the lights a second time on our visit. Right in front of the hotel.. Had more room amenities than other same cost hotels we stayed in. Location is very remote so there is no place to get food aside from the hotel. So eat before if you don’t want to eat there. English breakfast available but was not particularly hot. Room on the small side but not too bad. Very close to the glacier lagoon and diamond beach which are awesome and a must see.

Check in was very easy . Although there is both a steep ramp and several stairs to go from the road to the reception area, there is also a nice ramp for wheelchairs, etc. The receptionist was knowledgeable and friendly. The room was very spacious, with views of the ocean. Beds were very very comfortable. There Is an open closet with a refrigerator and a safe. There is a portable fan in the room. Bathroom was immaculate with very nice fixtures. Towels were large and thick/luxurious. The electrical outlets were located by the desk. I did not see any USB outlets so you will need to bring the appropriate chargers and cables for your devices. Staff are wonderful, and appear to have varying backgrounds. It's a nice international flavor. The wifi is very good. I did measure their wifi reception as follows: Upload 46 MBPS and download 70 MBPS in my room. There no restaurants in the surrounding area so you are bound to the hotel's restaurant. The food at the restaurant was, bytheway excellent. We rented a vehicle in Reykjavik and drove out here. The hotel will notify you if the Aurora Borealis is present: you have to sign up for this, and the service is free. We were treated to several spectacular Northern lights shows. We watched them from the hotel's parking lot as well as from the grounds on the side nearest to the ocean. The northern lights display was the highlight of our 3 week trip to this area of the world. There's very little ambient light so it was easy to see the northern lights. I would say it definitely is a romantic setting, and I would use this hotel to explore the surrounding area again. I will have lifetime memories of my stay here

We stayed at this hotel on 9/9/25 and while it is nice lodging, our experience was less than optimal. 1. We were offered and acceptaed a wake up call for the Northern Lights, but apparently, nobody actually goes outside to make sure the aurora is visible because when we woke up, got dressed and went outside, it was cloudy and rainy with zero chance of seeing anything. Several other couples were out there and equally bewildered. Perhaps the hotel should make sure the aurora is visible before needlessly waking guests. 2. After we returned to our room and tried to get settled in to go back to sleep, I noticed the floor next to the bed was wet, but it wasn't until we got into bed that the drip, drip, drip was observed. It was after midnight when we called the front desk to report a leak from the ceiling and they sent someone within 30 minutes to scope out the issue. Apparently, the water was coming from the bathroom on the floor above ours, but there was nothing that could be done and we were forced to listen to the drip for hours until finally falling asleep. The next morning, we had breakfast in our room and were packing up when the front dest called and offered us a free breakfast for the inconvenience of the leak in our room. We did not want or need the breakfast and would have appreciated a discount on the room which is overpriced by at least $200 a night by California standards. 3. We had many phenomenal meals on our 14 day trip, including dining at Moss Restaurant at the Blue Lagoon, Budir Hotel and an Arctic Char I made for us on a hotplate in our room at Bru Guesthouse, but the only regretable meal we had was at this hotel. The beet salad was inedible drowning in a blue cheese sauce and I have never had such an odd flavored tartare. I hope others have a better experience than we did, but we left exhausted and extremely dissatisfied with our stay.

We chose to stay at the Fosshotel our first two nights in Iceland because we wanted to be in a dark sky area in hopes of seeing the aurora borealis. Unfortunately, it was too overcast both nights. That said, we liked the location not too far from the glacier and Diamond Beach. The hotel is located right off the Ring Road with sweeping views down to the sea. There is a lovely waterfall behind the hotel with a small path to walk up for a closer view. The decor is a lot of dark wood and striking glass pendants hanging from the ceilings. Inside our standard room was very tight. The bathroom can get quite wet from showering. That said, the bed was heavenly and we slept very well. There is a small window we left cracked open as the temperature can get warm inside. There is no thermostat. There is a small heater inside the bathroom. They have a very good breakfast. Delicious eggs and bread. Yummy granola. Dinner both night was very good. All the fish was delicious and the salad greens were fresh and crunchy. I would stay here again.

We stayed for 2 nights on our trip to Iceland and had the best experience here during our whole trip. Our road trip was disrupted due to a ring road closure and the staff at the hotel were exceptional in helping us change our plans to stay an extra night and cancel a reservation that we would not be able to make it to. We ate at the bar twice and the food and staff were exceptional. I also love that they did a northern lights wake up call. There is nothing like being woken up to a beautiful aurora you can see from your room window!

Outstanding experience. The staff were extremely hospitable, the amenities top notch with an amazing restaurant, sauna and hot tub. The one funny part was we met Andrei from Romania who was so great but had to be “reminded” of the euro pop stars Ina and Alexandra Stan. We thank him for outstanding service and conversation.
