The Best Hotels in Iceland, From Rural Lodges to Reykjavik Boutiques

"It’s impossible to miss the Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon—not just because it’s the only hotel for miles, but because it’s so perfectly tucked against the moss, trickling waterfalls, and anchoring mountain you’ll have to double-take to make sure you’re not stuck in some sort of Nordic mirage. Every single space throughout the property makes the most of the landscape with massive windows and moody interiors that complement the moss that surrounds the hotel in the summertime. Like most luxe stays in Iceland, the front desk is ready to make dinner reservations, book tours, and accommodate room upgrades and requests whenever possible. But they do go above and beyond in small, unexpected ways. If budget is no concern at the hotel’s restaurant, dig into the Dream Feast, which gives the chef full permission to get creative and craft a seasonal five-course experience. Alternatively, it’s the perfect spot to taste some grilled arctic char."

Our Readers' Favorite Iceland Resorts of 2023

"Set at the foot of Hvannadalshnúkur, this lodge lets guests wake up beside a glacial lagoon amid a landscape that feels otherworldly. The property pairs dramatic views with a memorable dining program, highlighted by a tasting menu nicknamed the “Dreamfeast,” which showcases artfully rendered Nordic specialties." - Brad Japhe Brad Japhe Brad Japhe is a journalist specializing in food, beverage, and travel. Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon (Hnappavellir, Iceland) 4 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Perfectly placed for a ramble around the south coast of Iceland, Fosshótel Glacier Lagoon is one of a new wave of hotels that combine contemporary architecture and design with views of the island’s extraordinary landscapes — and access to some even more extraordinary ones, including the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Skaftafell National Park. Rooms look out through vast windows, and showcase the warm side of Nordic modernism; the restaurant, meanwhile, is an upscale one with a sensible focus on local produce and Icelandic flavors. The nearby black-sand beach is a must-see, as are the Northern Lights, for which the front desk provides an overnight wake-up call." - Tablet Hotels

Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon | Best places to stay in Iceland

"You can’t miss this imposing hotel as you drive along the south coast: clad in black timber and glass, its blocky, architectural profile stands out against the hills like a contemporary sculpture. It’s part of the Islandshotel group, which is known for its contemporary decor and luxurious, modern style. The Glacier Lagoon is up there with the best of the group: chic rooms, picture windows and an ultra-refined restaurant make this one of the best places to stay on the south coast. Skaftafell National Park is only 30km northwest, and (despite the name) Jokulsarlon is roughly the same distance to the northeast. These are two of Iceland’s top outdoor nature attractions – making this a great base for wilderness fans. " - Oliver Berry

We came here with adult children in September. As others have mentioned, there isn't any other hotel like this in the area. Our travel agent booked it for us. It is a busy hotel because of the location and because it's in the middle of nowhere, you have to eat at the hotel. The staff in the restaurant seemed a little stressed out at times. It is nice that you can have a meal in the bar area which has cool decor and good atmosphere. The rooms are just ok and the bathrooms are very small. The carpet and bathrooms could use a refresh. We stayed at 3 different hotels in Iceland and this was our least favorite and had the weakest breakfast. There is a sauna and hot tub which we did use. Prices of the food are high, but that is typical for Iceland. I would recommend others stay here knowing there is no other options if you want to be near the glacier.

Beautiful hotel, but literally in the middle of nowhere. Gorgeous hot tubs/spa overlooking the landscape and the ring road. Nice sauna. Great restaurant (reservations a good idea as most clients will eat here - next place to eat is a long drive). Rooms are simple. Breakfast large and varied. If you are going to Jokulsarlon, this is the place to stay. Highly recommend.

Very posh hotel, remote and yet within easy driving distance of many sights. Easy parking, easy check in, great communication. Large windows allowed for a very enjoyable view of the fields and ocean, and the sheep that wandered by. Beautiful breakfast buffet with great offerings and great variety. I’m glad we had an ocean view room. I suspect some of the mountain view rooms face the parking lot - and while the mountains behind are gorgeous, I was happy to have a more rustic and unimpeded view. I have recommended to friends as a great place to stay. We were here for three nights.

We booked the suite for our honeymoon and wedding pictures photoshoot! The lava lights and the view outside the window is impeccable. Lobby lights and just the hallways are really pretty. Breakfast is good! Restaurant is also great

Great hotel with very helpful staff, but the menu was disappointing. No halal/kosher options and only one vegan dish. We were 15 guests and struggled to find any suitable food for two days . With Iceland attracting many Middle Eastern visitors, we hope they consider more inclusive dining options.

This was our favourite place that we stayed in Iceland. Room was lovely, spacious and clean with good views. Bed was comfy. We enjoyed making use of the spa as well, and the complimentary robe and slippers. Great location for exploring the nearby glaciers.

Our favorite hotel stay while in Iceland. Rooms were spacious with excellent views — got to catch the Northern Lights in mid-April! The spa/sauna was fantastic. Only downside was breakfast was not included like most of our other stays and we felt the price was a bit high. However, many people highly recommend their dining options. We did grab some muffins/snacks from the front desk that were great, though! We loved this stay and would recommend :)

Very modern rooms with the most comfortable bed among all the hotels we stayed at in Iceland (most are too soft). Blinds do a great job for blackout. Service is generally good especially the lady at the reception and shift manager at the restaurant. Location is unbeatable (basically the only hotel near the ice lagoon). Having a small gym and spa is a bonus. Hotel can consider upgrading the toiletries (the shampoo and conditioner barely do anything) and toilet paper. Had high hopes for the restaurant but weren’t blown away by the food both in terms of taste and presentation - salmon was overbooked, steak was very tough (granted it’s grass-fed). Breakfast has decent selection. Making reservation is highly recommended as pretty much all guests will eat there. Overall a nice stay. Price is on the higher side but not everything justifies the premium.
